~snip~
There are certain business on which its understandable that they wont be letting their business to have no worker that being on duty or working specially on groceries or shops or even on hospitals or other jobs on which it will be that totally having sense for their owners wouldnt be wanting for it to have vacant or missing out in that days profits. Therefore, to those who are assigned on such job then it will be that unfortunate since at the start of your job or the moment that you have accepted then you have agreed into those terms on which simply means that you do need to work basing up on what you have agreed or accepted. The good thing on here is that if ever even if you do have a work and if its double pay then there are tons of people who would be accepting it out without any complaints or any issues. If you are someone who do have complaints about this then better to tell your co-works or having some agreement or having asking some favor in regarding on swap duties or places if you do want badly to go with your family specially on holiday season which there are indeed workers that want to have a job on that time to make even more earnings. If you are in solo, then there's nothing you can do but to do the job. You do have your own choice whether you do have that duty or you will be that skipping or having that not to work but later you do get fired? haha You're not wrong. A job is contract, and a contract has terms. Still, we treat those contract as though they were natural law. They are not. Economic structures, cultural inertia, and not to mention power dynamics all help to shape them. People choose occupations with no holiday not because they are self-sacrifice but because other option is frequently unemployment, underemployment, or low mobility. In a way, it's limited rationality within a skewed market Our society does not have an abundance-of-options economy. Our work market honors "availability" while hollowing out the idea of relaxation, decency, and balance. Another fiction we have accepted is unpaid family time: it is not productivity, thus it is overlooked. How much marginal utility do you get from a Christmas Eve shift versus burnout? Your " just swap shifts" answer also has a mistake. That assumes equal leverage, equal conditions, and equal mental health. None of that is guaranteed. Some folks are surviving rather than negotiating shifts. Some people have families, others do not. Some live for that double pay, others die a little inside every time they miss dinner with people who matter And that what makes it situational because not all people do share up with the same situations or conditions in life on which these working holiday thing could neither be an advantage or not for those who have been on a work or a job on which if it turned out that do go into a company that having some holiday duties then it turned out that you've been one of their employees and been said that you do need to work then there's no other thing you can do but to do the job or having some trying out to absent just because family time is more important rather than on money. On some point then it might be that advantage for someone but there are those who cant just missed out such opportunity. We are the ones who do made out such choices but since we do need up some work then there's nothing we can do but to deal up with it even if its against our will and emotions but since we do need work then we do just that deal up accordingly. There are that those times that you do become that been thinking up too much on what are your priorities. Living on a 8-5 job is stressful and does need up some breaks specially on holiday season but since we are under on having a boss, then it couldnt be known whether we do need up to work or not on a particular time or moment. If there are might some considerations then there's no work on that time but if there are some compulsory then you do need to patch it up.

In my opinion, it is not right to force someone to do any work on holidays. Many people hope to spend some time with their family on holidays after working all year round. An employee is not a robot that will always work, he needs some rest. But there are many company owners who are only interested in making their company profitable but they never think about the employees. If the employees are given a day off on holidays after doing good work all year round, then their mind is very good and they are interested in working in that company. And if the employees are forced to work even on holidays without giving them a day off, then they get bored and think about quitting the company. And if they quit their job like this, the company may eventually become unusable.
Yes, of course everyone needs free time to just take a vacation and chat with family. Rest time is important to maintain work-life balance, productivity, and employee morale. When someone feels appreciated and has time for themselves and their family, they will be more motivated and loyal to their work. However, on the other hand, for those who work as factory workers or casual laborers, long holidays can actually be a nightmare. Because their income depends on the number of working days, not working means not getting paid. Many of them have to look for other jobs during holidays, either odd jobs or accepting additional work calls, just to ensure that their family's needs are met. So, this holiday issue does have two sides. Ideally, everyone can enjoy their rest time without having to worry about income, but in reality, not all workers have that kind of comfort. An employee's income should allow them to do what they want on their vacations. Of course, first of all, they should take vacations and not have their wages cut during these vacations. Wages should not be cut during weekends or holidays determined by the workplace, and the person should work and live in better conditions. Providing an environment that allows a person to be committed to their job and enjoy their job is important for both the employee and the workplace.

You are right, because there are still many companies that cut their employees' salaries even though they are on vacation by taking leave which is actually their right. Even the cuts are unreasonable. I am talking about this because I experienced it myself, so that not long after that I finally decided to resign. Even from some experiences that I found from my friends, they are still required to work during the holidays. Companies usually package it with the word loyalty to their employees. But the problem is they can't do anything, because they still need a job.

When other people still choose to survive the companies that are for their employees to keep their work on the grounds of loyalty to the company where they work, of course they have their own reasons for them to find it difficult to find other jobs that can provide income for them so they have to keep doing work even though they are on holiday.

Or simply that we dont have any have much choice but to deal up with it or else you would be losing up your job and thats whats make it even more harder because we dont have choice because we do need money. Even if you do want to spend up some time with your family specially on a holiday season but since your boss telling you to work then there's nothing you can do but to deal up with it and work on it. I do agree into those points that some people are thankful on having these kind of duties because it do pays up even more. They dont prioritize family bodings and other similar stuffs as long they can be able to earn money then that what really counts. If you've been having the feeling that having that holiday season work or duty is too much for you then you are always free to find for another work on which it do suits out your time. Only a few would be doing so because finding a job is really that being that too hard and losing one isnt something that worth just because you dont like the work hours. If a company does the thing you have said above, of course, choosing to recing the right choice, but we must be prepared to look for other changes to continue to have income that can meet the needs we need. If you do find yourself having not enough salary because of your expenses or whatsoever then its always been ideal that you should be looking up for other opportunities that would be adding up on the income that you are getting. If you've been that staying at your job because you are contented on what you are earning then its your choice because you wont be staying up for long if you arent that satisfied into the income pay that you are getting every month. It is just that been too hard on having no job plus with that worsening economic conditions then it will be that a very tough living or having that survival.

During the holidays, only those people who are employed in areas where either production cannot be stopped (for example, an open-hearth furnace), or the work of these people is vital, for example, hospitals, ambulances. Similarly, you can point to the work of firefighters, which is critically important, as well as the police, who ensure public order. So, these people work regardless of holidays, because they have to. But if ordinary workers are forced to work on holidays simply because the management of a conditional corporation wanted more profit (the motive is greed), than it looks completely different. This is natural exploitation. It was this kind of exploitation that prompted Karl Marx to write Capital...

Well that's the problem, there is no other choice for them so they stay in that job, because if they resign it means they will no longer have income and it will also be difficult for them to find a new job. What I did at that time, I also didn't immediately resign before I knew what I was going to do next. I actually used the time I had to get a new job before I resigned. But I was also quite lucky at that time, because the company didn't make it difficult if there was a better job. Because there are also many cases where companies make it difficult for their employees to resign.

I think people that need to work during the holidays have an important role not just to the company but also to the society. And with my past jobs and interviews, if they ask me about this. I'd always say that I am willing to give myself and going to go for that if they'd call me on a holiday as long as I am noticed beforehand. But if there is notice and I decided to go on a holiday and they'd call me on urgency, I am not sure if I'd go with that but as long as I am in an accessible place and they want me to go office that's fine. But if I am far, of course they have to give me time to travel unless the job that's urgent is easier if it's remote work or task.
Holiday shifts are usually pre-scheduled, and employees are notified in advance, either through contractual stipulations or upon request, depending on the work situation. Personally, I refuse to work on holidays, even if the pay is doubled. However, I may be forced to accept it if the work situation warrants it. I remember working as an employee on a project and volunteering with some colleagues to supervise night guard shifts during holidays when the guard was absent for a period due to illness.

I worked for 10 years in a call center and worked almost every holiday, including Christmas and New Years'. I had no choice but to go, or I would lose my salary and some benefits related to my absence, and I could be suspended or even fired because of it.
Likewise, I had to get used to it; after all, I have a family to support.
Nowadays, thank God, I work for myself, from home and doing what I love.
There are essential and extremely important jobs that practically cannot be stopped, so a work schedule must be established, and the employee must be informed in advance. This is the fairest thing possible for those who believe it is unfair!
It's good that you were able to start up something for yourself, there are some employees that are very selfish they don't care about the wellbeing of their workers... sometimes we find ourselves I'm such places because we have no choice but a lesson to be learnt from your experience is to always have a plan, it doesn't matter the kind of job you are into at the moment what matters are the goals you have.. everyone should work towards being independent because that's where financial freedom comes from.

Working during holidays is not supposed to be for everyone because there are single parents and married women who have children and responsibilities at home to take care of.
Due to work, most parents don't have quality time for their children and spouse. Most don't even see their family members for almost 6 months or more, and this people have been longing and praying to see their family, and the only opportunity they will have is holidays.
So working during holidays isn't good except the person is on shift or holds a very vital position like CEO, MANAGER, SECURITY PERSONNEL, ETC. or maybe there are conditions binding his work like (owing the company or establishment) except this I don't see reason why people will work on holidays.
Even a spinster and a bachelor should have time for themselves and remember all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.

You're right but if the nature of the job that you signed up for states that you have to work during holidays then you just have to do it because you signed up for it most organizations requires their staffs to even work from home even after closing from work they will always call their staffs and tell them to prepare one document or the other all these too are forms of exploitation that is even against the labour laws. One main reason why things like this exists is as a result of lack of job opportunities so alot of person's are of the view that they have to stick with the current job that they have seen as there is no guarantee of getting a job the best way to fight against companies exploiting their staffs by making them to work when it's not official working hours is enacting labour laws that will protect and friendly workers

If holidays are not paid or there are no benefits, it is a loss for employees, the company is very immoral and oppresses its employees. Therefore, it is very important to continue to hone skills so that we can work independently. Because sometimes we as employees are in a dilemma, on the one hand we are oppressed and on the other hand we need work so we have no choice but to comply. Because as far as I know, wherever the company is, even on holidays, workers are required to come to work, be it big days like Christmas and Eid, there must be a salary that is more than usual, if not, then the company does not apply humane rules. Every country must have regulations regarding employment, meaning that the company does not implement these regulations properly because employee rights are not fulfilled.

The essence of working during holidays are mainly for nongovernmental companies where the target of production has to be met daily despite any circumstances, by doing that company can be able to pay their workers at every month while maintaining the gross profits from the company.
Also, customers demanding a company product doesn't care if it's available or not, so company has to set up a nonstop production service while delivering to the customer round the world.

There is nothing wrong with that and I think that working on holidays is beneficial for both workers and companies, workers will certainly get additional wages if they work on holidays and companies will get more benefits when production or work done on holidays will increase company productivity. However, not everyone wants that, especially for workers who have enough savings for their lives, they certainly also think about resting or going on vacation when they are off work.

Yes, that's not a problem at all, as long as the workers and the company have reached an agreement and the most important thing is that there is no coercion for employees who don't want to. Because working hours have been determined and when you have to add working hours while on vacation, it's already overtime. Once again, if there is no coercion, then this is not a problem. As you said, not all employees want that, because they also want to have time where they can be free from work and enjoy a short time during the holidays.

Holidays are also listed every month for all employees and also include big days such as certain holidays. So it is very clear that things related to overtime and holidays can be distinguished well by each employee and company, besides that in terms of work there has indeed been an agreement in advance which has indeed been discussed in detail between the company and the employee beforehand. So when there are no problems that need to be discussed, it means that everything is running normally.

Some offices give employees time off during holidays, but others don't. Some even make employees come to work on Christmas Day or during other festive seasons.
For me, I don't think it's fair to make an employee work during holidays. I think it should be voluntary - if you want to come to work, you can, but if you don't, you can stay home and celebrate with your family and friends.
Giving employees official holidays during their festive seasons should be part of their benefit package. I say "their festive seasons" because Christians may want to celebrate Christmas, Muslims may want to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, and Hindus may want to celebrate Diwali.
This is also a way to promote diversity in the workplace. If Christians take Christmas off, Muslims and Hindus can work, and then when Muslims take Eid off, Christians and Hindus can work. This way, you can regulate your workforce and give employees the freedom to celebrate their holidays.
By doing this, you prioritize employees' satisfaction and well-being. This is why people don't leave jobs, they leave toxic work environments. When you make people feel comfortable and loved, they will stay, and it will increase productivity and mutual respect.
Closing offices during holidays for like two weeks might affect business revenue, but how much?
You've been working from January to December, you should have sustainable investments and is it worth making employees miss out on time with their families and friends? I don't think so.
But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?
Work is not some voluntary fun time that you are donating charitably - it involves tasks that you are required to do in exchange for money. You meet the expectations of the business and agree a contract, at that point if you feel that the holiday is not flexible or meeting your expectations, you are free to negotiate and may get what you want - which is presumably set days off each year. You better have a lot to offer if you want some sort of special contract not received by everyone else. You'll get a certain amount of days off each year, which may or may not include public holidays. If you don't get public holidays off or the religious days off that you want, then you're free to book them in advance like anyone else. It's a really simple system that you've tried to over complicate.

If a company does the thing you have said above, of course, choosing to recing the right choice, but we must be prepared to look for other changes to continue to have income that can meet the needs we need. When other people still choose to survive the companies that are for their employees to keep their work on the grounds of loyalty to the company where they work, of course they have their own reasons for them to find it difficult to find other jobs that can provide income for them so they have to keep doing work even though they are on holiday.
Only a wicked person and a company will reduce workers money because they refused to work on their brake days when demanded. This is why I makes sure that I read company rules and regulations, if it's there on an agreements that I signed to work on free days like this, there is no excuse for me not to work but if there is no written agreement between me and the company and my employer, I will make sure that I see to it they pay me my money in full. This is why it's important for employers to ask questions no matter how juicy your work is, ask questions and set yourself free otherwise you will be walking into traps and no matter how good a pay job is, if you don't have that freedom to rest, your boss will call you while sleeping at home to come work for him and you wouldn't be able to say anything, and funny thing you wouldn't be able to complain about the toxic work unless you decide to quit.

So when there are no problems that need to be discussed, it means that everything is running normally. It all depends on what kind of job they are doing. Many types of jobs where employees work more than 8 hours a day - do not have weekly holidays, only giving permission for leave when employees need it. Being an office employee or in a company - of course they have a set work schedule, while in other types of jobs the holiday schedule is obtained randomly. In certain types of jobs - overtime will be paid more per hour, but only if your salary is calculated per hour. If you are paid monthly - then it feels like you won't get overtime pay either, unless it is called a bonus. The most complicated problem that employees are facing is - inflation really makes them lose their purchasing power because there is no salary adjustment, maybe even can no longer meet their monthly needs. In all countries - salary adjustment is really mandatory to help employees get out of financial problems, but usually the country and its government do not move quickly in resolving this matter.
