Working during holidays especially on Christmas day is totally not acceptable to me unless the company that I work for has other off days that they grant their employees. Working on Christmas day would be fine by me if my employer is willing to Grant me off days when ever I want it so I can spend time with my family, the purpose of working is to provide for my family but what's the essence of working for someone if I can't even spend time with family. Working for someone is really the hardest thing to do hence the reason why I'm considering opening up my own organization no matter how little it is so that I can work for myself instead.

There are some type of jobs that require workers to work even on Christmas day...this is an oppression or you can call it an abuse because it's the worst regulation that anyone can ever follow.. the holidays are for people to have a good time and regain mental and physical energy, depriving them this would make them incapable of doing their duties properly...workers need time to relax and have fun with their family, without rest the brain cannot the way it is supposed to

Not all workers can get leave on red dates or long holidays. Like those who work in supermarkets, restaurants, transportation services and others, because at that time the peak of customers can be overflowing, so it is impossible to miss and people do need the service. and in my opinion as long as people are able to love their jobs well, it is not a big problem, because usually working on holidays, employees will get a bigger salary than usual and besides they can still take leave on the following days.

And when on holidays like Christmas, Eid al-Fitr and other big celebrations, employees usually still get moments with their families, it's just that maybe not all day because they have to go back to work.

I have no doubt as I have a cousin that works in a company that even works on Christmas days. Although he normally get time off every month, but if his time of didn't appare during Christmas day he will probably work that day. Actually every company should have respected that day because it's a special day, but I think those companies management that works on Christmas days are greedy and won't want to lose just a 24hrs (a day).

In my opinion, it is not right to force someone to do any work on holidays. Many people hope to spend some time with their family on holidays after working all year round. An employee is not a robot that will always work, he needs some rest. But there are many company owners who are only interested in making their company profitable but they never think about the employees. If the employees are given a day off on holidays after doing good work all year round, then their mind is very good and they are interested in working in that company. And if the employees are forced to work even on holidays without giving them a day off, then they get bored and think about quitting the company. And if they quit their job like this, the company may eventually become unusable.

Some offices give employees time off during holidays, but others don't. Some even make employees come to work on Christmas Day or during other festive seasons.

For me, I don't think it's fair to make an employee work during holidays. I think it should be voluntary - if you want to come to work, you can, but if you don't, you can stay home and celebrate with your family and friends.

Giving employees official holidays during their festive seasons should be part of their benefit package. I say "their festive seasons" because Christians may want to celebrate Christmas, Muslims may want to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, and Hindus may want to celebrate Diwali.

This is also a way to promote diversity in the workplace. If Christians take Christmas off, Muslims and Hindus can work, and then when Muslims take Eid off, Christians and Hindus can work. This way, you can regulate your workforce and give employees the freedom to celebrate their holidays.

By doing this, you prioritize employees' satisfaction and well-being. This is why people don't leave jobs, they leave toxic work environments. When you make people feel comfortable and loved, they will stay, and it will increase productivity and mutual respect.

Closing offices during holidays for like two weeks might affect business revenue, but how much?

You've been working from January to December, you should have sustainable investments and is it worth making employees miss out on time with their families and friends? I don't think so.

But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?

Working during free period "off duty" or during festive period I don't think there is something wrong with that is just depend on the time schedule and work period of such company, I believe they most have tell them the rule and regulations guiding there work in the organisation before they sign the acknowledgement and acceptance letter to work for the said organisation. People outside might think they are not being fair to them or they are doing injustice to them to work during the off period, but you yourself can tell if really they are being fair to you or not, and I believe so many organisations give out overtime and weekend duties to staffs who work extra apart from there normal duty hours. So why don't they refuse or reject the payments given to them, I have seen so many people that even care and love to work during weekend or during festive period and off duty period because of that little tokens they will be given, some say, it go a long way for them and there family. So what will be the case of this individuals that can even fight and quarrel with his or her colleagues because they did not include them in a weekend duty?

This is the risk when working under other people rules so that we cannot freely set the time when to work and when to get valuable holidays like on Christmas and that's what I don't like, most companies make rules that are quite detrimental to workers although not all companies do that because there is a possibility that companies that continue to work on special days consider that on that day the profits can be multiplied. But it cannot be denied that the risk has been realized and agreed upon from the start by the workers. It is true that getting money requires sacrifice.

The jobs where you might not have holidays even during special occasions are usually civil forces, such as the police, fireworkers, medical fields such as doctors, etc. This is because of the nature of their job since their services could be needed at any time, so they need to be readily available to attend their duties even during general public holidays, and to be honest, it isn't abuse or anything but it's for the public and their health and safety and if such people aren't given complete leaves, it's for us.

Imagine having a medical emergency on Christmas, you are rushed to the hospital, but there are no doctors available at all because they are all busy celebrating Christmas, you and your family members will be pissed because of that, but, if there is someone available to attend you or maybe only requires a phone call and comes immediately, that will be a relief, right? That's the reason why such jobs don't allow holidays even on such special occasions.

I think people that need to work during the holidays have an important role not just to the company but also to the society. And with my past jobs and interviews, if they ask me about this. I'd always say that I am willing to give myself and going to go for that if they'd call me on a holiday as long as I am noticed beforehand. But if there is notice and I decided to go on a holiday and they'd call me on urgency, I am not sure if I'd go with that but as long as I am in an accessible place and they want me to go office that's fine. But if I am far, of course they have to give me time to travel unless the job that's urgent is easier if it's remote work or task.

That's also how I no it works, so I will call it luck for people who might be going on off at the month of celebration to come back towards the ending of the month, after everything must have been celebrated, however work actually defers from companies to another because not every company one can go for a whole month on off, some are even hard to give a day off to any worker except is from preference gotten from there performance appraisal, though I don't even no if I would say the company is greedy because I no how it could be if internet should shot down for a month because there are millions of dependent to it.

There are certain business on which its understandable that they wont be letting their business to have no worker that being on duty or working specially on groceries or shops or even on hospitals or other jobs on which it will be that totally having sense for their owners wouldnt be wanting for it to have vacant or missing out in that days profits. Therefore, to those who are assigned on such job then it will be that unfortunate since at the start of your job or the moment that you have accepted then you have agreed into those terms on which simply means that you do need to work basing up on what you have agreed or accepted. The good thing on here is that if ever even if you do have a work and if its double pay then there are tons of people who would be accepting it out without any complaints or any issues.

If you are someone who do have complaints about this then better to tell your co-works or having some agreement or having asking some favor in regarding on swap duties or places if you do want badly to go with your family specially on holiday season which there are indeed workers that want to have a job on that time to make even more earnings. If you are in solo, then there's nothing you can do but to do the job. You do have your own choice whether you do have that duty or you will be that skipping or having that not to work but later you do get fired? haha

In response to this, it is necessary to first investigate the employee's initial contract with the company. You may think this is unfair, but loyalty should be prioritized when you need additional manpower from your employees, especially since everything discussed above is stated in the contract.

In my experience, when a company asks employees to work on Christmas or other holidays, the company will provide allowances to employees who work and this is outside the basic salary. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong if both parties benefit equally.

Speaking of Christmas. It is now the holy week in the Philippines. It is the week leading up to easter and each day there is different celebrations or traditions. Holy Week commemorates the seven days leading up to Easter. It begins with the commemoration of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, marks the betrayal of Jesus on Spy Wednesday, climaxing with the commemoration of the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday and the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday

Some jobs still require people to come even on holy week. But some are required to give some time off at least on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Unfortunately, some people will continue to work since they need the money anyway. But in general, it is expected that the country will have less busy roads and will have more solemn environment for this week.

In a good company, this is exactly how it works, you get extra pay for overtime work, and often it is higher than the pay on a working day. But there are companies that do not pay extra for overtime work, and consider it good manners to stay late at work. But it depends on you how you will perceive this, if the workers allow the boss such an attitude, then for them it is also acceptable, but if they expressed their dissatisfaction as a team, then this could change the situation, in any case, you can always leave such a job and find another.

Absolutely right, the main thing is that the company's management does not put the employee in front of a choice: "either you go to work on holidays, or you will have problems." And by problems I mean a reduction in the bonus or a deduction from the annual additional salary if there is one.

Everything should be by mutual agreement, and then this will be both an excellent opportunity for the employee to earn extra money, and for the employer a chance to get the work done before the originally established deadline.

There should be a harmony in between the worker and employers on which we do know that there are things that can be talked about or made out some adjustments if ever the other wont be agreeing into those terms but just like on what said by most people on here that on the moment that you have decided to accept the job then pretty sure that you've been told about the possibilities of working on a holiday season on which if you do find out to be on this kind of set up, then you can always have the right decision to decline such job and look for another one. On the time that you have that accepted it out then it do means that you are willing to do the job out of those time frame or days on which some people doesnt really like to work specially on holidays. For me then i would be that wanting to have that kind of chance too specially if the pay is good or doubled then that will be an advantage and since i dont have my family nearby then i can utilize up the time to make even more earnings.Just make it sure that you've been that paid well in accordance into the rate or amount that you should get with those duties but if it turned out that your employer is only good at promises then this is the time that you do complain into a specific government department that handle out such cases. Actually working overtime or holiday season is done according into your liking but just like on what been said that there are already agreements been made and not that needed up to be reviewed yet its clear that a worker should be working on a holiday season.

You do have your own choice whether you do have that duty or you will be that skipping or having that not to work but later you do get fired? haha
You're not wrong. A job is contract, and a contract has terms. Still, we treat those contract as though they were natural law. They are not. Economic structures, cultural inertia, and not to mention power dynamics all help to shape them. People choose occupations with no holiday not because they are  self-sacrifice but because other option is frequently unemployment, underemployment, or low mobility. In a way, it's limited rationality within a skewed market

Our society does not have an abundance-of-options economy. Our work market honors "availability" while hollowing out the idea of relaxation, decency, and balance. Another fiction we have accepted is unpaid family time: it is not productivity, thus it is overlooked. How much marginal utility do you get from a Christmas Eve shift versus burnout?

Your "just swap shifts" answer also has a mistake. That assumes equal leverage, equal conditions, and equal mental health. None of that is guaranteed. Some folks are surviving rather than negotiating shifts. Some people have families, others do not. Some live for that double pay, others die a little inside every time they miss dinner with people who matter

Absolutely right, the main thing is that the company's management does not put the employee in front of a choice: "either you go to work on holidays, or you will have problems." And by problems I mean a reduction in the bonus or a deduction from the annual additional salary if there is one.
There were some superiors that are putting it hardly to these employees that if they don't get on the holiday to their jobs, they're going to get fired or have some tarnish to their good records. Sounds like a threat and extortion but there could be more than that and for some personal experience, I am sure that many have gone through that phase too.

Everything should be by mutual agreement, and then this will be both an excellent opportunity for the employee to earn extra money, and for the employer a chance to get the work done before the originally established deadline.
That is right, there should be talks in between and not just because we're just employees, they're not going to look at our rights. But if it's not written in the contract, then simple notification that we should know in advance is a must for it. And so we can cancel our other activities for the sake of that job and extra money.

Yes, that's right. That's already a job risk, no matter what we have to follow the rules. Some are given leave during Christmas or holidays, some still work but their days off are replaced after the holidays or big days. There are many examples of employees who still work on holidays such as couriers, drivers, motorcycle taxis, chefs, cleaners, waiters, security guards, baristas, maids, train drivers, pilots, and all public service workers who carry out their duties in the middle of the Eid holiday.

But one thing is for sure, no matter how much we love our jobs, always remember that when working with people we have to follow the rules. Try your best, but don't overdo it because in the end, we could be replaced when our boss doesn't need us anymore. That's why it's important for every employee or worker not to depend on a job, but to think about investments or other things that can earn additional income.

Just make it sure that you've been that paid well in accordance into the rate or amount that you should get with those duties but if it turned out that your employer is only good at promises then this is the time that you do complain into a specific government department that handle out such cases. Actually working overtime or holiday season is done according into your liking but just like on what been said that there are already agreements been made and not that needed up to be reviewed yet its clear that a worker should be working on a holiday season.

I think that such working relationships are regulated by the contract and any failure to comply with them in any way by the employer will entail legal punishment for him. And these are very strict fines, which means that if the employer offers work on a day off, it means that he will comply with all the conditions with which he familiarizes the employee in advance.
After all, this is not a relationship between two people, when someone can easily violate the previously agreed conditions. In the case of work, all this is limited by the framework and the employee is protected by the state.

Yes, but this type of contract is only fair for state-owned companies, which are always accountable to the employee and to the general government apparatus.
There are plenty of small private companies that are self-governing and can easily change the working conditions for workers, keeping them for several hours or delaying their payment.
For example, I personally encountered a situation where my bonus was cut because I did not want to work overtime.

Yes, of course everyone needs free time to just take a vacation and chat with family. Rest time is important to maintain work-life balance, productivity, and employee morale. When someone feels appreciated and has time for themselves and their family, they will be more motivated and loyal to their work.

However, on the other hand, for those who work as factory workers or casual laborers, long holidays can actually be a nightmare. Because their income depends on the number of working days, not working means not getting paid. Many of them have to look for other jobs during holidays, either odd jobs or accepting additional work calls, just to ensure that their family's needs are met.

So, this holiday issue does have two sides. Ideally, everyone can enjoy their rest time without having to worry about income, but in reality, not all workers have that kind of comfort.
