For the playoff round match I think has difference atmosphere than phase league round and Madrid will play all out for winning the first leg match and make easily the second leg when playing at home. I think Madrid can play more attractive if Benfica playing full defense and need to anticipation from faster counter attack from Benfica.

What will happen? Even if he has a world-class team, if he cannot achieve anything as a team, then individual performance and achievements are worthless. Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi played for the team, they had team success. But Kylian Mbappe has no major achievements in club football except for the Ligue 1 title. I will blame him for this, the team he is in suffers from team performance.

On the contrary, this game will be an interesting game because real madrid will want to prove a point against this benfica team, and since they are the clear favourite in this game on paper, they knows that they must win, if they want to avoid being mocked by their rival fans.

But since Jose Mourinho is the manager of benfica, that alone carries another point of interest because since he has already gotten the better of real madrid once, I and most football lovers will be curious to know how he is going to approach this game in both legs, and it's because of him, I can't confidently bet on real madrid to qualify to the next round of the competition.

Name a team sport where it is any different than this. it is usually the same suspects depending on how transfer regulations are. I don't know about NBA, but salary caps and stuff have an influence. Since these essentially do not exist in the domestic leagues (FFP doesn't really change anything), you will usually see the same teams for years and years to come out on top. It is a money and reputation question. You could see when Newcastle was a rising star a few years ago, they still had trouble to sign big names. It was not a money problem, but a reputation problem. Great players prefer to go to Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, City.

The last time there was a real surprise was in 2004 when Porto won the Champions League. I doubt we will see something like that anytime soon again. It's crazy how long it took PSG to finally win the title despite their outrageous investments. Smaller clubs can't ever get there.

Records are meant to be broken and when a player is good like mbappe there is no doubt that whatever records that is kept will eventually have the time for it to be broken. With the way he has been playing shows that he is no doubt the excellent player that he is and with time coming there would be no chance for most of the records that the two legends hold.

And for the penalty aspect, I don't think teams are just awarded penalties if they didn't force out the tackle from the opponent.

Well teams like Real Madrid are getting awarded very shady penalties that if you take away Mbappe's penalty goals this season his numbers will drop.
I am old school I want to see players have a high number of goals minus penalties and a team like Real Madrid have now taking the art of depending on penalty that they are getting better at diving.

Inasmuch as Mbappe has a poor run on team trophies, his accomplishments still should be acknowledged, they have been Many players with ego as big or even bigger than his and they excelled, it's just that Madrid is not pulling there weight. And plus now that Real Madrid are always going through the round of 36 play offs it will still give Mbappe an avenue to score more goals. If it's me, they should cancel goals scored in that round.

I agree, seeing surprise results can be really fun. Benfica's chances of beating Real Madrid are really low; I don't think they can do it. But what if they do? Then that would be truly enjoyable. In the Champions League, the best teams get the best results.

Basically I somewhat disagree with saying it's boring to see the same few teams entering the final and winning the title, it's because they seem to deserve it based on performance and team depth. Teams with squad depth and inconsistent performance will eventually have to accept defeat from better teams, after all, every team playing also considers the prize money per match instead of just the title.

Small teams with great motivation to qualify for the next round sometimes have to give up easily when they get a stronger opponent. Squad depth and team performance are the reasons why they failed, but in fact they also tried hard to qualify.
