Benfica needed a change of coach, but I also agree that Mourinho turned out to be far from the best choice for Benfica. For them it was in some way a risk as well, because in all his previous clubs Mourinho showed that he is no longer as good as he used to be. Therefore the decision of Benfica to appoint Mourinho as their head coach was a risky step, but they wanted to try, maybe he would be able to work well with a Portuguese club. Benfica has already suffered two consecutive defeats, and I hope they can improve their performance because they're not doing very well this way. They lost to Porto yesterday, but they're doing well in the league. They need to be careful; losing or drawing at this stage will be costly later on.

I don't think that Benfica is doing badly in the league they are third on the league but ten points behind Porto the league leaders. The coach is trying his best to make sure that the team gets back to form building a team and getting results is not something that is done in a day but is actually a gradually process which takes time. Mourinho should just concentrate on the league because it's obvious that the league is were they have much hope on so maintaining a consistent performance in the league so that they can put more pressure on Porto that is on top the league.

After a tough week for Benfica, where they lost against Porto in the Portuguese Cup, we return to the league and the start of the second half of the season.

Porto has a good advantage to win the championship, Sporting still believes they can catch Porto, and Benfica can perhaps only think about trying to secure second place.

I don't think that Benfica is doing badly in the league they are third on the league but ten points behind Porto the league leaders. The coach is trying his best to make sure that the team gets back to form building a team and getting results is not something that is done in a day but is actually a gradually process which takes time. Mourinho should just concentrate on the league because it's obvious that the league is were they have much hope on so maintaining a consistent performance in the league so that they can put more pressure on Porto that is on top the league.

I gree with your points, because a team that is sitting in third place in the Portuguese league table is not doing badly at all. Beside there are still more matches to be played which am sure 17 matches are remaining to be play. So benfica still have the chance of getting to the top, if only they can be consistent in wining their matches this time around. And there's no doubt that Benfica has lost form, because their platforms has dropped currently making the team to inconsistent. And  I believe their coach is working on that to bring the Benfica team back to it normal state. So Fan's has to be patient with him, because it's not easy to bring a team back on form it takes time.

The team is on fire, 21 points away from the 4th place which will not be easy for Gil Vincente to displace even the 3rd placed Benfica.

This league is one of the few leagues with such gap between the top teams. Porto is now dominating the league ahead of Sporting CP who lifted the title last season with only 2 losses and 7 draws. Sporting CP is now 7 points away from the leaders, can they overtake Porto? Let's watch and see.

I don't know if you misquoted your reply, but we certainly didn't discuss that earlier, even though we were discussing staying in the Portuguese league. We were discussing Benfica's potential going forward, and that's the context. But it doesn't matter, let's move on.

The top teams, especially Porto and Sporting CP, will certainly continue to dominate, given their impressive improvisation in the standings and their continued improvement in their chances of maintaining their position in the standings. Porto, especially, remains unaffected by their consistent performance throughout the league.

I have no doubt that Benfica will struggle to win this game against Rio Ave. I understand Benfica's stature, but this is a situation that needs to be seen live. Pre-game betting is very difficult without knowing if Benfica will actually want to play or if there's officially some kind of crisis within the team.

Every game has it's peculiarity just as every league and at such the odds that are accrued to every game is varies based on the rating between the two teams involved in the fixture. For example, if there is a fixture between Real Madrid and Valladolid, the chances of Real Madrid having the smallest odds is high, because they would be considered the favourites in such a fixture.

Considering that the recent results haven't been positive, being 10 points behind the leader, and having several key players injured... Benfica is clearly in a minor crisis.

Mourinho was kicked from the cup as expected by Porto. No shame since Porto is better than them and they were defeated by only a goal. Their performance wasn't that bad after all.
Braga is the other defeated team. They lost with a goal difference against Fafe  a team sitting in the other half of the table. As I mentioned above Braga is fluctuating badly and unpredictable..
