In matches like this, it is crucial not to be left a man down on the pitch. Had Lenglet kept his cool, he wouldn't have received a red card, and Benfica wouldn't have lost. After all, Benfica was the side that started the match strongly; had I watched the highlights without knowing the result, I would have assumed Benfica had won. Porto finished the first half leading 1-0. In the second half, Benfica managed to equalize despite being down to ten men, but the disadvantage of playing shorthanded eventually saw them fall behind again. Porto won the match 3-1, yet I was more impressed by Benfica's performance. Benfica is currently trailing by five points, but Porto is bound to drop points as the season progresses. There are three unbeaten teams in the league so far. Porto and Lisbon are expected, of course, but Santa Clara has been the surprise package. I checked the fixture list, and Santa Clara hasn't played against any of the big teams yet.
Porto would not have won this match had Benfica not been reduced to ten men. Lenglet showed great naivety in this game; while slapping an opponent is an action warranting a straight red card, the referee sent him off for a second yellow card. Up until that moment, Benfica had held significant dominance in the match. Even though Porto was ahead on the scoreboard thanks to Veiga, Benfica possessed greater playing strength. I believe Benfica has learned the necessary lessons from this match.

It was a day full of emotions, even before the break for the national team games. We saw Sporting letting themselves tie the game in a truly surprising way, getting further away from first place. Then, we had the big classic: Porto vs Benfica. As always, they are games with a lot of emotion. Despite the good start to the game by Benfica, half an hour into the game, they played with one less. From then on, everything became more complicated. Even without giving up, even managing to equalize, they were not able to avoid defeat. Here are the results of the matchday. MATCH DAY 7 - RESULTS: CD Nacional 0-4 Famalicão Gil Vicente 1-1 Marítimo Alverca 1-0 Rio Ave Sporting CP 2-2 Arouca Vitória SC 1-1 Moreirense Amadora 0-2 Acad. Viseu Santa Clara 0-0 Braga Estoril Praia 1-2 Casa Pia Porto 3-1 SL Benfica

It would be wrong to say that Porto would not have won the match if Benfica had not gone down to ten men, but I think the match would have been very exciting and competitive. It would have been difficult to say which team would have won or which team could have won. Benfica were dominant before Clément Lenglet got a red card, so it doesn't mean they would have won the match. You can watch Manchester United vs Manchester City where City won the match even after going down to ten men. So it is wrong to make the excuse that a team lost the match because of a red card.

We can take advantage of this break in national team play to look at and analyze the league table. At the top, we have Porto, who have only victories and are having an extraordinary start. The season is long, but statistics indicate that in other seasons where Porto had a similar start, they were champions. Will the same happen this season? We also saw that the surprise of this season is Santa Clara, at least in this initial phase. We'll see how long they can keep up this pace. Further down the table, we have the surprise of Guimarães, who have already suffered 4 defeats. It hasn't been a good start to the season for a team that is usually closer to the top positions. If I remember correctly, last year it was Vitória that got off to a good start, wasn’t it? And if my memory serves me right again, every season we see a team start off strong and surprise us In the Portuguese league in particular, I always hope to see a surprise team outside the top 3 to add more excitement to the league It’s only been 7 games so far, but Porto’s stats point to them likely winning the title: 1 - a good number of goals scored, 18, already the second best atack 2 - a great defense, having conceded only 3 goals, the best in the league 3 - they’ve already won a head-to-head match against their title rival, Benfica The start couldn’t be better

There are ways that God of soccer always favored some teams, so regardless Port vs Benfica, it is true that the opportunity of Port winning Benfica when they are not longer complete and out side the one man down from Benfica player, Port is club that is well known as a strong side, because i don't think it is that easy of winning Benfica that easily even with one man down, so i will say that is how the match program himself to be in favour of Port and with the seven games played so far, Port has played seven games and wins seven of them and Benfica was able to win 5 of their games, so Port is really performing very well at this beginning of the season and they should continue with this step, they might end up in with good position in Portugal league.

With Portuguese league matches paused for national team games, this thread isn't seeing much activity. Although league play hasn't resumed yet, I read this news about Porto today: FC Porto agree deal to sign Chris Smalling, here we go!
Deal done for the English centre back joining as free agent.
Medical underway right now for English defender joining Porto. source: https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/2105303787078652315Well, I got really curious to learn more about this player especially since Porto is leading the league and looks solid in attack, midfield, and defense, in my opinion. They don't need to change a thing since everything is going so well for them at least, that’s how I see it. When a team is on the right track, you shouldn't change anything. So, I looked into this player: his name is Chris Smalling, and he’s 36 years old. Yes, I didn't make a mistake he really is 36. That means he won't be able to do a lot of running over the course of 90 minutes, and since he plays as a defender, I find myself wondering: " Does Porto really need a 36-year-old defender right now? " He managed to play 34 matches in the Saudi league last season, which suggests he isn't particularly prone to long-term injuries; however, the Portuguese league strikes me as tougher than the Saudi one, so I still wonder if Porto really needs him right now. His salary at Porto hasn't been disclosed, but we'll see how he performs and whether signing him was worth it.

They don't need to, especially since they currently have the best defense in the competition. I believe this deal was a low-cost opportunity to add more depth to the squad. After this break, things will get much more complicated until the end of the year, with many games and several cups taking place in addition to the league. Having another player could help keep the team fresher on several fronts.

Although before the match started, I thought the match would probably be a draw. Benfica, even though they were playing with one player less, still had more control over the field than Porto. Benfica attacked a lot but their attacks were not successful. It is expected that Benfica will be in a good position again from the next match. I hope they win the next match with Vitória by a big margin.

The match between FC Porto, and Benfica was a very tough match as these two teams ranks the most influential team in the Portuguese league. To me, any of these teams is capable of securing victory. Before now, they having been meeting, and there are times when FC Porto secure victory even when Benfica is with their full squad. However, Benfica strength against Porto will still be decided in their next meeting. More also, on the Portuguese primera league table, FC Porto is still leading the table without loosing any match yet , and to me the two teams are doing very well without showing any sign of weakness presently.

LUZ STADIUM Sport Lisboa e Benfica The Estádio da Luz is the largest football stadium in Portugal. With a current capacity of over 68,000 people, it is one of the most emblematic stadiums, also known as "the Cathedral". This stadium was inaugurated in 2023, with the aim of modernizing the previous stadium and hosting several matches, including the final, of Euro 2004. It thus replaced the previous stadium, which at one point had a capacity of 120,000 spectators.
Old stadiumThe old stadium was inaugurated in 1954, having been built with great effort on the part of the club's fans. They not only helped financially with the cost of the construction, but many also volunteered in the building process. At the time, it was considered one of the largest stadiums in the world. Their record attendance was in the 1986/87 season, in a game against FC Porto. Their record attendance was in the 1986/87 season, in a game against FC Porto, with a record crowd of 115,000 people. It was dismantled in 2002, when it only had 72,000 seats, to make way for the construction of the new stadium. After the last game played in the old stadium, there are reports of fans secretly taking chairs from the old stadium as souvenirs. More about the old stadium here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Est%c3%a1dio_da_Luz_(1954)
The new stadium hosted the final of Euro 2024 and two Champions League finals (2014 and 2020). It has also hosted major concerts, most notably Ed Sheeran in 2019 (+120,000 spectators); Taylor Swift in 2024 (+120,000 spectators); and Bad Bunny in 2026 (+120,000 spectators). It should be noted that this higher attendance is due to the occupation of the stands and lawn area during these events. Within the stadium complex, you can find multi-sports pavilions, training fields, leisure areas, and the club's museum, as well as a statue in homage to Eusébio (the club's most emblematic player). Near the stadium, you'll also find one of Portugal's largest and best-known shopping centers, the Colombo Shopping Centre. Currently, there is a project to expand the sports complex and stadium, which involves creating more leisure and commercial areas, as well as increasing capacity to 80,000 seats. The capacity expansion is expected to be completed by 2030, in time to host World Cup matches. +Info: https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Est%C3%A1dio_da_Luz

There is a raw quality gap, so red card can't be used as an excuse to ignore the reality of the league standings. FC Porto is at the top of the table with a flawless 21 points from just seven matches and that proves that they are committed and playing with a different style this season. They won all games in a very authoritative manner. Porto has that collective chemistry and good tactical consistency. They are far ahead of Benfica.

This sounds a lot like last season when Porto signed Thiago Silva, who, by the way, was already over 40 hehehe (41, to be exact ) I think that’s exactly what you were referring to Porto is competing in the UCL, and it’s possible that for very important matches, they’ll need to rest some players in the Portuguese League, and that might be where these players get to play. Even if it’s just for half the game, it could help Since the player didn’t cost anything, I think that’s Porto’s goal

Yes, Sporting has a good chance of winning. Especially since they need to start showing a different kind of performance, otherwise the coach's position could be in jeopardy.
Some people are already starting to say that the coach shouldn't stay until the end of the year. Personally, I think he shouldn't leave, but of course, in the end, what matters is the team's performance and the results achieved.
Considering that Sporting was already two goals up against Arouca and the time they had a red card, they would still defend their two goals and won Arouca by either 2-0 or 2-1 but for Arouca to immediately scored two goals after Sporting had a one man down shows that Sporting isn't a formidable team under Rui Borges management, and I think the fast Sporting management sack him and hire another coach the better for Sporting to start performing like Sporting of 2023/2024 and 2024/2025. Some time when people or fans clamour for sacking of coach due to one or two mistake or error, l disagree with some of those call coach are human and are bound to make mistake, their is one question which seems inevitable I do ask, after putting player in the pitch what stopped player in ensuring they give their best? surprise style of game that brings glory to them and the coach but most time players channel all their error to coach, anything happens in football, that needs some questions, sporting hard good performance, their advantage of lossing the game, hard it bee they hard the red card before without goal advantage it would have been a loss because it seemed they ended in draw .

A coach is human no problem with that but managing the team is his job that's why he's in charge and when things aren't going right he has to take all the blame because he was brought into the position to use his experience and knowledge to correct and guide the team towards better performance. While there are moments we can pick out in the games to blame it on players for not doing their best, but generally, the coach gets to be blamed because he's the one who calls the shot for the team that's what makes the coaching job not a joking one.

Coaches takes the most blame when their teams fail to improve on the pitch and if there's no improvement after sometime they could get sacked. This is because, the board has given the coach the power to decide which players he wants to work with so that they will know exactly who to blame when they don't see the results that they expected, the coach duty is to make sure that his team deliver, replace those who are less performing with the ones who are in form that's why they are more blame than players. On a normal, everyone on the team get blamed not just the coach because it's a team work,so when the team fails to deliver, every person on the team get blame but the coach get the most blame because he is their head.

You are right, coaches takes all the blames when the team is not performing well on the field and players take more of the credit if they perform well especially when a player comes on to give late winners in some matches, we will forget it's the coach that introduced such a player. The team and coach needs to be blamed if things are not working well, the coach select the player, the players are the one on the field who decides not to perform or perform, the board in some instances interfere with the business of the coach. The players should have the same amount of blames as the coaches when things starts to fall apart they are all part of the team.

This is because the absolute control that the coach has over the team structure makes him vulnerable to being fired by the board of director. The lack of success in implementing tactics on the field proves that the coach was not able to maximize the capabilities of all team players. The firing of team manager is quite a common phenomenon in the result oriented sportsworld. Leadership involves swallowing the bitter pill of firing when the tactics come to standstill.
