Lets say I want to buy bitcoins today and store them for 20 years to use a my retirement fund. Live comfortably, but don't need to buy a yacht or anything. How many do you think I would need to buy?

lol i agree with this. in 20 years 2 bitcoin may be worth 2,000,000$ and to me a 2m retirement fund would last if you plan on retiring at 60 and living untill 75 or whatever. specially if you have another income coming in still from ssi or whatever it may be safe side get 5

Personally, I am buying as much as I can, but not more than I can afford to loose. If the landscape changes and we end up using an altcoin or some crazy unforseen circumstances (power grid goes down, govt interference, etc) cause Bitcoin to be worthless, you don't want to wind up pennyless. That being said, BUY BUY BUY! Buy as much as you can and put it away and forget about it for 10-20 years. Your children and grandchildren may thank you someday. I am hoping to accumulate at least 1 BTC for myself, my wife, and each of my kids for long term holding... and to gradually increase the amount from there Bitcoin Phoenix

1 bitcoin should be enough. 2 at the most! But you could always retire early!

Well depends on what you find as a "live confortably" and how long you want to live You want to spend 1000 usd/month when you will be retired ? 5000usd/month ? If you want to have money you cant think ... how many would i need .. you have to think how many times I can multiply wealth I have now

If you want to live comfortably in retirement, bitcoins are the wrong place to look. Check the history. They've been going down in value all year!
Invest in FacebookCoin or whatever it's going to be called, or maybe just invest in a low cost index fund (since you're talking 20 years down the road).

Buying 1 coin for cold storage is the biggest no brainer I can think of. If in 20 years btc is $50,000 each how stupid are you gonna feel knowing you could of bought just 1 coin for $450 today. If it goes to 0 woopdido your out a few hundred bucks. I don't care what the price is doing this year. As stated I'm looking down the road. And bitcoin is the future.

You could have put 1 dollar into cold storage 20 years ago and it be worth a trillion now if you were in Zimbabwe, of course those zim dollars buy you nothing useful at all. Better to buy something useful that reduces yours costs now and in 20 years, usually land/housing. What dollar or btc do are secondary to real costs most likely?

Umm, check the history? perhaps you can go back more than a few months? I think the overall return on Bitcoin has been pretty good. from a few cents to over $400 in a few year years? Has any investment in our lifetime been that good? Facebookcoin? Really? You would trust hard earned money in an account with the kind of "security" Facebook is known for?

20 years from now? 0.05 bitcoin IMO. But hell, why not just store away 1 bitcoin in cold storage I'd suggest electrum and also memorize the seed.

10 bitcoins looks nice.
Sounds about right if you hold them that long you could get buy with 1 but would be tempted to sell it With 10 you should be set even after having selling urges satisfied

If it is retirement money we are talking about, I would not invest too much in bticoins. May be 1% to 3% of your wealth. Doesn't seem that save at the moment.
