How is it decentralized if you have to use storj.io to access your files?

You don't. Anyone will be able to run the Metadisk software on a web server.

Okay cool. Will it be possible to build it straight into a desktop client to make it easier for users to use?

Yeah that is in the roadmap. Web node -> RPC client -> Desktop client. We are doing this step by step. Unlike the Bitcoin network we require a resource, storage. So by bootstrapping the web nodes, we can have an effective storage network before the user computers are ready to take over the majority of the network.

Is there an IRC channel for the project where we can talk about the service and discuss bugs?

Awesome! I'd like to sign up for the beta as well, if possible. Thanks.

Metadisk just offers decentralized file sharing for now. What you are probably looking for is the Storj RPC client which has software you can run on your VPS or local machine to sell space back to the network.

We are building Metadisk first so we have a good usable front end app first. The Metadisk nodes will run the same software later.

Little bit of everything. Smiley I think this is going to be a lot like bitcoin in the early days, where people experiment and start using it in all sorts of unexpected ways. So while there may be several layers in your application stack, no one says there's only one way to use them. Smiley

I'm hoping end of this week, but no guarantee. We have about 4 issues to fix before we can do the first batch, so it really just depends on how fast the team works.
