Because it's a questionable shit hole. It's hard to know who owns it, where it's located, what's true and what isn't. It craps out at vital moments and the hack was a pathetic oversight on their part if what they say is true.

In this day and age it's slightly depressing that somewhere of that nature is still one of the leading crypto exchanges.

You must be trolling or something. Bitfinex works well so far, yeah they have some troubles with Chinese regulations but it's not Bitfinex to blame and recent big theft they handled it pretty well. How nice it would be if we had Bitfinex instead of MtGox in 2014.

They've always had a chronic transparency problem and it hasn't let up. They are indeed still functional to an extent but if they changed their attitude they could be a whole lot more.

NEM is leaning toward the economy concept where value keeps moving between individuals. For that moving value is considered a key in weighting network importance. Those who will build services on top of NEM will benefit the most from that. For instance, a service might not own any XEM on its own but circulates and facilitates value moving between different individuals "assets, game credit, ..." such service account can be the most important in the network without holding any balance by the end of the day.
