XEM back over 10c and showing proper signs of life for the first time in a long, long, long time. Between now and December it might actually be worth paying attention.

Which leads to the next question: Why would anyone choose to NOT opt in, as he would only miss out by not doing so. It´s all a mystery to me

It's for tax purposes. If investors want to receive their XYM at launch they'd opt-in before the snapshot. If they want to receive them at a later date which is more tax advantageous, in a new tax year for example, they would opt-in at a later date.

This is if u store coins on a CEX. Like coinbase. And if whats yours is kept off exchange, taxation should not be a concern. I think I will go bust a nut and get back shortly to send a couple more word bullets in to the discussion. Its funny that no one posts here since no one generally shows any care toward the coin itself but when free token rains in or is distributed through fork, every penurious ass on earth with a wallet and a dust in it comes here to ask for free crop.

Opt in date is starting on Sept 15.  Snapshot is in December.  (However, you can opt in up to 6 years later to claim your XYM).

Opt in from the services menu on the NEM wallet if you want to receive XYM tokens on the release date in December.

Your XEM balance on XEM chain at time of snapshot is what you will receive as XYM on new chain. You will also keep your XEM on old NIS1 chain.

XYM will automatically be deposited into your XYM wallet on release date and can be accessed with your private key.

Roadmap:
- 15th Sep: Optin Opens, Code freeze, and Testnet launch 🔑

Opt In:
What is opt in? Opt-in is the method by which existing XEM holders are able to claim their XYM tokens at the point of Snapshot, prior to the new chain launch of Symbol scheduled for December.
When does Opt in begin? Sept 15th
Am I required to opt-in? No.
If I don't opt in, what happens? You will have 6 years to claim XYM with your NEM private key.
Do I need to update my wallet to opt in? Yes. A new desktop wallet with opt in module will be released soon.
Can I opt in with Trezor? Yes.
How do I opt in on mobile? Use Symbol Mobile Wallet
Can I opt in with exchange? No, not unless your exchange has specifically announced this.

Snapshot:
What is snapshot? A picture of your XEM balance, used to determine your XYM balance on Symbol.
When is snapshot? Sometime between the 3rd and 16th of December. Exact date to be announced.
Will exchanges support snapshot? You must ask the exchange. Zaif is the only exchange that has announced support at this time.

Other:
Is Symbol a fork? No.
How do I swap my XEM? There is no swap.
How do I get XYM? Hold XEM at time of snapshot.
When is airdrop? There is no airdrop.
Will I see my XYM in NEM wallet? No.
Will my XEM show on Symbol wallet? No.

Possibly it can be compared to the stock markets' shares:
a share is splitted or
a company is reorganized with another company (partially bought) and the share owners will get also the new company's shares.

Possibly it can be compared to the stock markets' shares:

But actually the value of the "original" share will not be adapted or diluted. On the market regulators (if any   ) the original XEM will not start the day with a smaller value (because it "transferred" part of its value to symbol token).

Am I wrong ? Maybe I am missing something
