Hi

A few questions to S3 users:
1) is it possible to place four of these in a small room (15-20 m2) without AC and work comfortably there during summer Wink ? (in other words, how much heat and noise these devices produce?)
2) I've got one Toughpower Grand 1200W - will it be enough for three S3's ?
3) how it goes with overclocking and how does it affect ergonomy (noise+heat and increase in power consumption - see 1) and 2) ) ?

thx in advance

Its possible to place four of them in your small room without any ac.
But make sure some ventilation is provided for outside air to enter and hot air to escape.
You may arrange some DIY stuffs to make it more efficient in cooling.
Noice will be very low since its equipped with two fans running slow.
Its a dual +12V rails PSU supporting 40A in one and 85 in another. It may not be a problem for connecting 3 S3-es, But its not possible for a 4th one.
T
he company says, "80 PLUS Gold certified – with 87-93% extreme high efficiency @ 20-100% load to cut down electric cost." If its true then its a good and efficient Power supply for overclocking since 20%-100% is its efficiency peak loads.

FAQ

1. Will S3 support p2pool?

The simple answer is we will. Bitmain has a very sincere interesting with p2pool, and we have invest human resource into this area. Sadly our firmware may not be able to give you a firm yes that we support p2pool right now, but we promise we will contribute much more to the p2pool mining idea than most of those who support p2pool mining well already.

For the short term, our core developer has already been looking into the p2pool problem. We think we might be able to solve it in another week or two.

Hello Bitmain,

It's been 2 weeks since you made this comment - is there any news on a p2pool compatibility fix yet? Many of us are waiting in the hope that we can use your hardware with p2pool, if we can - then I'm sure p2pool users will buy more hardware from you.

Thanks & regards  Smiley

1) possible, yes. Practical, no. Four ants will dissipate 1500 watts. That's more than a typical hair dryer running at maximum. A room of the size you mentioned would get uncomfortably warm in a few hours without A/C unless you get get significant airflow through it. I've had 1400W worth of mining gear in a 12m^2 room with no A/C; there is no way I would have worked in there due to the heat.

Don't make the mistake of thinking the S3's will be "silent". Dissipating 200W per blade (400W per device) is like a GPU at full load. The larger fans on the ants will of course not nearly be as loud as a GPU, but you will definitely hear them. Whether or not the noise will bother you depends on your tolerance.

Hopefully within a week or so we'll start getting reports from customers who have actual units to report first-hand on these questions and more.

I want to buy one of these. I have a corsair power supply that i run 2x r9270's on.

Could i use this for the antminer? If so would i still be able to use both the video cards or would that be over power. I don't know anything about electricity except not to dick with it.

Edit: corsair 1000

yeah trying to run 2x gpu's the rest of the pc and the antminer will be pushing your limits.   if you are running 1 s-3 you can use quite a few different psus to get her done.

completely aside from your question:

I have come up with a design idea for summer use.    think of a  window air conditioner.

I believe  2 or 3 s-3's  with just some plywood and a piece of sheet metal could mount in a window blowing all hot air directly out to the street.

A bottom piece of plywood.
a top  Piece of plywood .
a sheet of metal as a rain shield.

the psu in between the 2   s-3's mounted fan down with the psu exhaust  out the window.  the top sheet of plywood needs to have 8 holes each one lines up to the pcie jacks on the s-3's

most noise and heat will go out the window.

I will make a lot of photos of this once I build it.  I think 20 bucks tops to make it.

just be careful of storms. if you have tall buildings near you you may get horizontal rain flying about which won't be very good for them & would get past the rain guard. Some piping with diameter approx that of the S3s would enable you to set them into the room say 20-30cms and prevent that though.

In case anyone is interested, I downloaded Corsair's PSU Cable Guide and verified that the CX750M comes with 4 600mm (23.6") PCIe cables.

I knew that the PSU had 4 PCIe ports, but not whether they provided cables for each port (it's modular). Fortunately they do, so there's no new cables to buy to power the S3.

Now we just need Bitmain to ship Wink

No. CX750M  comes only with two 600mm PCI-E cables.

http://www.insidehardware.it/hardware/alimentatori/2414-corsair-cx750m-750-watt-ad-un-prezzo-mai-visto?start=4#.U8KvX7EmxSU

I have self-built  6 modules KNC Miners. Total 5 pcs. Every KNC  has one CX750M  and one Corsair RM1000.
Even more expensive  Corsair RM750 has only 2 600mm PCIe cables.
Corsair RM850  has three PCI-e cables and Corsair RM1000  has four PCI-e cables.  Each 600mm cable has two PCI-e connections.

Anyone one else a little concerned that Bitmaintech hasn't giving us an update on shipping or updated their support page with S3 info and firmware?

And to anyone who would expose their miners to outside air, keep humidity in mind. I had an old Avalon unit I stuck outside in a screened in porch area. It was away from any rain however, after a couple of months the circuit boards started to build up corrosion and the miner stopped working, until I cleaned the corrosion off. I keep it indoors, in the A/C after that.

No, they'll start shipping very soon, I am sure.  They are not like BFL et al.  Hold your nerve units will soon be on there way.  It's now the 14th July in Beijing, so keep an eye on your orders all you who placed an order in batch#1, and let the rest of us know when units start shipping.

Most of the tracking number emails I've received from Bitmain arrive between 5AM and 8AM ET, so if they do ship on the 14th, we should know within the next 16 hours.
