Hello everyone,

When we were doing the first mass production, we found that not all of the S3’s DC/DC module could be stable enough to support the 478GH/s speed. After long time testing, all of the S3 run stably at 441GH/s, which however is 7.7% less than the 478GH/s we have announced.

So we decide the final specification of ANTMINER S3 here:

Hash Rate: 441 GH/s or more
Power Consumption: about 340 Watt at the wall when running at 441GH/s
Power Efficiency: 0.77 J/GH on wall
Power Supply: 12V DC
Size:  331 mm x 137 mm x 160 mm
Fans: Two 14038 fans mounted on both front and back ends.
Operating Temperature: 0 °C to 35 °C
Complied with: FCC / CE
Network Connection: Ethernet

Many of the customers may be lucky to find that their S3 can be overclocked to 478GH/s.

We apologize for this incident. We offer two options for customers:

1)   10.0% worth of coupon for the B1~B3 customers. This is the default option. (10% based on what you have paid for the B1~B3)
2)   7.7% worth of refund. We will release a function on our official website for application of this option. If you have bought from our resellers, please contact them and provide your Bitcoin address.

Shipping schedule updated:

Batch 1: The shipping will be finished in 14th and 17th.
Batch 2: It will be shipping out between 18th and 19th.
Batch 3: It will be shipping out between 19th and 22nd.

I am actually okay with this. However, I wish this news was accompanied with all of B1 being shipped on the 14th.

Would you mind clarifying what you mean by "Batch 1: The shipping will be finished in 14th and 17th"? Does it mean that you'll ship B1 in two different batches or that shipping will start today and end on the 17th?

Well, its ok, what do you think its better?

10% coupon or 7,7% refund?

Its 10% of what, what we paid?? (1.48 for 2 S3 in my case). Or its 10% coupon of what cost 1 S3??

Coupon is better if you plan on buying another one Wink

It is probably applied to the original purchase price to reward the people that want to buy another one.

Is the 10% option a 10% coupon off a future order or is it 10% of your order total?

It is probably applied to the original purchase price

So if i purchased 2 units, i will receive a 10% coupon of 1,48 BTC? Thats 0.148 BTC --> 89,74 $

Not bad because i would like to buy another unit.

Just 1 coupon then? Hope they lower also price for next batch.

I thought i could OC both to have 1 TH/s or so, now i wont be able to get to 1 TH/s argggg Tongue

So if we are not lucky to OC S3 to 478GH/s how much can we OC it?

Is this likely to be resolved in future batches with upgraded DC/DC modules to attain the full 478GH/s ?

What do you recommend the best way to go about safely and stably trying to attain a speed closer to 478GH/s with these initial batches ?

Looking forward to seeing them ship !

In the morning DHL delivered me three Antminer S3-s, I was in the batch 1 ordered the very first moment.
I ordered for two but in the packet there where three S3s.Maybe a bonus from BitMainTech or an accident?
Anyhow, there were no customs duty for me. I don't know why. DHL simply dropped in my place.
As they advertised, there should have a cover for the miner for air flow control, But in my three S3-s the cover was missing.
Also, one of them was little dirty and the fans came with dirt. The other two were brand new. The dirty one may be the S3 they used first for testing.
After all, the dimension of S3 is smaller than S1 and the body is build with plastic instead of metal. It weighs less than 500gms.
Its working hard on my desk, silently, there is no vibration due to the additional 4 rubber standoffs attached in the base
otherwise, due to low weight the noise of S3 vibrating on my desk may not be bearable.
Its hashing fine at 478/366. Overall a very good deal.

Todays was a pleasant morning, I was happy when I woke up, I got a good deal from BitMain, all credits to them.
Suddenly, I realised that, my pre-orders are still waiting for BitMainTech to ship. The hard thing I realised, all the above was just a dream.
So, much fun!

The worst thing happened. Here are my concerns:
So, no more overclocking like earlier said 504Ghs/390Watts not even 478 possible for all. No more overclocking fun.
The questions to bitmain,
1) By saying DC-DC controller unstable means, if one overclock to 478Ghs and if its unstable,
will this dc-dc controller burn out? What will be the after  effect if an unstable miner is overclocked?
2) 10% of the  current order as coupon or 10% of the future order?

I would like also to know, from BITMAIN, OC parameters because i dont want to burn out my 2 S3. Can you please tell us secure parameters for overclocking S3 without any risk?

I would be interested how the DCDC is "unstable".

What I am getting from this is that they bought DCDCs hoping to use them 20% over their actual rating.

When it turns out that they are unstable above 110% of the rated amps, they just tell us DCDCs are unstable when in fact this could have been avoided by proper planning.

All Power supply recommendations are not much valid now.
The maximum overclock speed is now caped at 478Ghs for some and for other 441Ghs.
The new power consumption for S3 is 340W at wall and at 366W if lucky and that's still uncertain.
So, even three overclocked S3s can be easily run in a 1200W power supply.

Need to do some hack in stabilising DC-DC, adding a heatsink or replacing with a new DC-DC.

Herein lies the problem with pre-orders. I suggest to Bitmain that they revert back to selling in-stock equipment only so as to avoid this kind of thing happening again.

With regards to the refunding options: If the S3's are p2pool compatible then I don't mind having the 10% coupons as I will definitely be buying some more - but if they are not p2pool compatible I would prefer a refund, as I will not be buying any more. Can you please advise us on the p2pool situation asap so that we can make a decision?

Antminer S3 is P2Pool Compatible as per their update in the second post of another thread.
They should have tested it some more pieces than a single unit at-least before mass producing it if they have that much variance.
I still don't understand what they meant and why its, 'unstable DC-DC in "some" devices and not in others.'
