Here's a sneak preview of the modular Rig Enclosure. It's initial availability will be in the form of the Mini Rig product which is the implementation illustrated below. However, it's been designed to house any of the common cards in it's modular platform including standard Single PCB's. For more information, please visit: http://www.butterflylabs.com/production-update/Kind regards, BFL

Ive seen the same models used for other custom equipment before when servicing mining sites (and also for sale on alibaba). Or are you now using different cases to those displayed on your website ? The cases you display on the website only have vents on the front and back, but I see you placing them on the side in this design.

Kind regards, BFL
So, the configuration rendered is a Mini Rig. But it is a different product and therefore doesn't belong in one of the three threads about the Mini Rig. Right... There is no need to spam the FPGA sub-forum with rendering announcements. We get it, BFL is figuring out how to actually build the Mini Rig.

But we can see this has Ethernets in it! COMPLETELY different. Can I browse Youtube on it while it hashes?!?

Regarding the water block, your website says: A much requested water block option is coming for both single and mini rig owners. Here’s a look at the pre production prototype.
Will this be sold as an optional accessory ? and what price range can we expect ?
It would be an Utopia to be able to run the Mini-Rig in the same room as I sleep. Although I assume some exhaust fans will still be needed to exhaust the heat from the power circuitry ?
Also the tubing has some cable on it, is this pressure sensor or water flow sensor ?

Those are temperature sensors for the water that can be read out on an lcd.

again I find the airflow design.. disappointing. Not sure if there is a similar array of fans at the other side, but either way, it looks like just a copy/paste job while there was opportunity to make something much more efficient by orienting the boards differently and creating windtunnels. That said, I still want one

That said, I still want one Although I am sure there are ways to improve it, I don't think the current design is insufficient, and should work reasonably well - the side-to-side instead of front-to-rear airflow is also a welcome development. Remember - there is still a "supercomputer" yet to come... I feel that they will pulling out all the stops on that one, making it the ultimate system. And for what it's worth, due to recent comments by BFL, I believe that as postulated by some, this is indeed a custom run of programmable devices of some kind. A custom device doesn't *have* to be single-purpose, it is just a lot harder to design a reprogrammable device. But it can be done.

The upper section of each tray has an isolated heat channel that collects hot air as it's drawn up from the radiator fins where it's blown out in exhaust. The enclosure performs well with Singles which are significantly hotter than Mini Rig processor cards. However, in that implementation we recommend activating both the left and right side fans. Here's an image showing the channel bottom with circular HSF cutouts. The underside of the next level's tray stacks on top of this in order to create the channel cavity. Left and right fans power the exhaust. It runs ultra cool ultra even when filled with regular Singles.

I have a rev three that still requires (and came with) both top and bottom fans. Their yields are nowhere near the point where they can claim tight enough tolerances if they're shipping these things. I can't imagine putting just 2-5 of these marginal singles in a shared container. it's easier to cool something(or lots of something) with more streamlined and efficient designs than small and tight since you have more room to work with.

Actually, the design does have a heat evacuation wind tunnel at each layer. The upper section of each tray has an isolated heat channel that collects hot air as it's drawn up from the radiator fins where it's blown out in exhaust. First of all, The individual board fans are much too close to the tray above it; depending on what kind of fan you use, you could be losing as much as 50% airflow from that alone, while generating more noise too. Just try it, take some case fan, hold a paper 10 cm above it, and see (and hear) what happens. Also most the exhaust (side) fans are actually fighting with the board fans; I assume they suck air out, but they do so below the board fans (ie, hot air, which is good) but also above those fans, ie, they also suck out relatively cool air and while doing so fight the individual board fans, further depriving them from airflow. Now Im not saying it wont work, they may run cool as cucumbers, but if they do, you could have achieved the same or better with less fans and noise using a better design IMO. And to be honest, going by the results of the singles which seem to overheat in anything but an airconditioned DC, I cant say Im confident. You guys seem to be quite competent engineers in your areas of expertise making awesome products, but for system/cooling design, Id really consider getting some outside help, or at least inspiration from other designs.

From the render it would appear they are attempting to use a heatsink that was meant for a single unit airflow and drop that in to what is basically a multi-processor airflow. Air should flow in and flow out in one path. 90 degree turns in airflow create the type of turbulence you don't want in a rig. They need a new heatsink for mini-rig applications. Cooling 80w on what appear to be a pair of gigantic IHS is not a difficult problem.

It looks to be a flow sensor. I doubt they would be including that with each single though as they tend to be expensive ($20 to $40). Most people buying water cooled singles would be buying more than 1 making multiple flow sensors kinda redundant. Good to see them doing some flow testing on the block though. So BFL how much resistance does the water block have? Crazy water coolers want to know.

If this product, not a mini rig, but a rig modular. The spec will not be 25.2Gh/s in 1250W. In the picture suppose accommodate 12bfl single rev3, then 830MH/s x 12 and 80W x12 = about 10GH/s and 1000W Correct or am I wrong?

This thread is now about bunnies with pancakes on their head.
I don't need to "sub" but I like both Butterfly labs and bunnies with pancakes on their head, so here I am. Anyway, while the enclosure looks nice, for Singles I think I'd prefer to keep them in their separate stock enclosures, for more flexibility and possibly better cooling. And without the extra expense.

Have you considered taking the singles out of the cases and stack them with risers?

I'm still waiting for mine to be shipped... any day now. That's an interesting thought, but the single's case looks ok to me, unless you'd need to do it for cooling purposes.
