Interesting, I have 4 S5's in the basement and it was in the 80's last week, but the basement wasn't too bad.  I don't think the S5's heat up as much as the S3's...but I have 4 S5's compared to the 8 S3's I had in the past.  And as long as bitcoin is profitable, I'll continue to run those S5's....until the next gen comes out of course.
I have 2xS3 and 1xS5 that are still running.
The S5 runs 24/7 but the S3s are off during peak electricity cost (~50c/kWhr)
The S5 is usually blowing cool air out of it - they default the fans way higher than needed - so I had almost no problem with it during summer.
The S3s fans are slower and also warmer air coming out of course.

has anyone tried to change the fan speeds in software?

I've never even looked at the S5 code, but the fan doesn't use a lot of extra power - about 10W at full speed I think, so around ~2% of the total ~600W
My S5 is basically mining so that the miner payout (the 99.1% transaction) includes more than enough to pay the payout txn fee - so I don't have to add extra inputs to the payout. I simply reduce my miner payout BTC amount in the transaction by the amount I want to be the fee - so as long as that's more than the tx fee that's all OK - it's currently about 20x the fee with the pool around 2PHs and all my 3 miners running most of the time Smiley
(the lowest it's been was once around ~5x the fee - i.e. ~20% of my mining payout)

50c/kWhr!? What the hell! That's insane!

He said it's autumn there, so I assume that means he's quoting the price of electricity in AUD not USD.  The exchange rate is like .7 AUD = 1 USD so his 50 cents is roughly equal to 35 of ours (us being we USA-ites).

And that seems about right.  According to this chart:

Electricity prices around the world in $/kWh
  http://shrinkthatfootprint.com/average-electricity-prices-kwh#more-3858

The average Aussie pays .29 usd /kWh while the US average is .12 cents -- I pay .08 $/kWh because Pennsylvania is frackland and the natural gas glut is currently keeping our electricity unusually cheap.

In fact, I wanna buy an abandoned factory with utility grade power and start a mining farm.

Then I could stop commuting 90 miles to NYC every day for a living... anyone want to bank roll that?  I got just the place all picked out... :-)

Well, gotta do something while waiting for the blocks Smiley
Oh there's another one Smiley
(awaiting confirm)
Edit: confirmed

My S3+ arrived yesterday, got it set up last night and it has replaced my S1 in this pool (+250gh), glad to see the luck is still here.  Cool

Congrtas on your s3 if your in the market for more I have 18 I would like to sell. I have kept them in my basement all winter but it's starting to get a little warm here in Northern Illinois USA.  I have some s3s and some s3+ . $75 s3+ or $65 s3 each + shipping to USA only.

Northern Indiana here and just started listing my S5's for the same reason...basement is going to get to hot soon.

I'ts  funny. the gas company bill for heat is 90% less this winter but the electric bill is $600 or 90% more. I keep waiting for the police to knock on my door. Thinking I must be running a grow house.  LOL  ....

I appreciate the offer, but I live in southern California, it's already hot and not even summer, and at $0.30+ / kwh, just one S3 is good for me.  My wife already comments on how hot my office is. Smiley

Well, not quite Smiley That graph is 4 years ago (2011)
It's also got nothing to do with the exchange rate. Each year it usually goes up.
Though, it recently went down a little due to tax changes, not up, as the exchange rate got worse.
It never changes based on the exchange rate.

The AU$ vs the US$ over the last 5 years has been all over the place: both better and worse.
http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=AUD&to=USD&view=5Y
For most of 2011 (when that link you posted says) it was better than the US$

Since Aug last year the exchange peak has been 0.94 and today it's 0.76

---------------------------------

There are 2 basic ways of paying electricity in Aus
Peak/OffPeak and Banded
I use Banded (for many years now) coz mining 24/7 works out a better average price over the 24/7

I have price bands based on time of day.
Looking at a bill in Aug last year: the Tax inclusive price bands where:
11.99c (Hot water heater only)
13.62c (10pm to 7am)
53.35c (2pm to 8pm weekdays)
22.62c other times
Plus a 90.75c a day fee
That bill total average after taxes and discounts was 21.6c/kWhr

So after that I stopped running most of my mining equipment.
So now I only run the S5 24/7
and the S3s off during the 6 peak hours each weekday
(except I sometimes forget to turn them on at 10pm Tongue)

My last bill I can't find Tongue But I think the prices were 10% lower due to power regulation changes.

Edit: I also checked with one of my clients factory 24/7 electricity price ... it was higher than my average.

kano I was just wondering if you know what source they use to produce most of electric there?

I was just in Costa Rica for a week and that country since the first of the year is 100% renewable energy producing their electric  with a lot coming from geothermal.
