Has anyone had this issue:

I changed voltages like always (running my miners from 1000-1300Ghs). The miner hung up. When I tried to reboot, it didnt start anymore. One of the 4 PCIe sockets seems damages. As soon as I pull out the cable of this one, the miner will boot and mine with 3 of 4 asics, 75% power. As soon as I provide the 4th socket with a cable again, the miner wont boot.

I cant figure out, where the problem is and what I can do.. It cant be that a part of the miner "burns" when switching voltages lower?? As stated, I never pushed them higher than 1300 or lower than 1000.

I had exactly the same issue.
Have been running my SP20s at 1300Ghs for months.
A few weeks ago decided to implement voltage switching, to save some electricity during the peak hours by running them at 1000Ghs.
Coincidence or not - 2 weeks later 2 of my SP20s died.
I have burned elements, looks like the chokes have cracked.

There's a response from Spondoolies about this on their "official thread" in this same forum. That thread is pretty quiet now, so you won't have to go too far back to find it.

I don't recall the details, but my general impression is that there was no compelling reason to change to 2.7.1. It doesn't sound like it had much testing, and that it was "honest to God, last one".

Please write back here if you come to a different conclusion.

After 4 months i just booted my sp20, working pretty well with new fan (reversed fan) I'm using 2.6.7 firmware should I upgrade to new firmware? or what's the stable firmware at the moment?

I had another SP20 die after a power outage today.  Unlike previous times a SD boot card didn't fix this one completely.  I did get it going again, sort of.  I'm sharing my notes on this in case it helps anyone else:

Symptoms: After a power outage the SP20 would not boot (no green/yellow LEDs, fan didn't spin down and back up, no web interface, etc.).  SD boot would boot the miner, but only in an air conditioned environment.  As soon as I put the miner back into the non air conditioned environment it wouldn't SD boot any longer (same symptoms as after the outage).

Initially I thought the problem was thermal related since it worked in the air conditioned environment, so I tested this theory by running a hair dryer through the miner for 60 seconds before starting it in the air conditioned environment with the hair dryer still running.  To my surprise, despite being hot to the touch, it started up just fine.  The problem was not specifically temperature related.  Also to my surprise when I returned it to where it is usually kept in the garage it also started right up, but only one time.  When I unplugged/replugged it it would no longer boot.  After trying dozens of times I brought it back into the house and repeated the 60 seconds with a hair dryer and returned it to the garage.  Once again it started up fine.  I repeated this a third time with the same result.  I do not know why this works-- my current hypothesis is that something humidity related stops the miner from booting, but once booted it runs fine.

So, I have a SP20 that works only after performing a strange procedure with a hair dryer.  I do not know how long this procedure will continue to work.  Maybe this will help someone else bring theirs back to life.

If you have to heat it up, my 2 cents if that you have a component that is having a bad contact.

It will start heated up or cooled down in an air conditioned environment.  Heating up is only required prior to starting it in the non HVAC environment.  SD boot is required for both.

can this be fixed by SD-card or is this most likely the controller?

If SD-card, then is there a procedure for a Mac (preferably) or Windows (7 or XP)?

The more I look into this, the more I hypothesize that humidity/moisture is causing my problems (since temperature is irrelevant in a low humidity environment).  I checked the humidity today-- it is 91% (much higher than usual - yikes)! 

Depending on the MSL, the plastics of ICs can absorb moisture (it is standard practice to bake ICs that have been exposed to moisture prior to reflow soldering to prevent damage).  I suspect that I have a marginal IC on the controller that starts fine in a low humidity environment (HVAC) or when I "bake" it with the hair dryer prior to startup in a high humidity environment. 

I wonder if something as simple as silica gel packs placed inside the miner near the controller would extend the life of the controller boards?

I have 50-60 percent humidity during a lot of the summer.   I have had no problems, but it's not next to window or anything.

So not as extreme as 90+ but it can handle mining in at least some humidity with no issues.

Thanks. It miraculously recovered to a state where i just needed to restart the cgminer.
Of some use: i think that one ASIC started to malfunction and overheat (others are OK) which resulted in some software malfunction, so i simply switched it (bad ASIC) off; mining resumed on 7/8 ASICs at ~1090 Gh and ~600w at the wall. This SP20E was mining since December, so I guess it simply started to age a little.

try formatting the sd and rewriting onto it.. that works most of the time for me

recovery did not work. Im using boot.

i typically have that problem as well. only once has recovery actually worked for me, but the boot image is designed only to be run off the card and not to fix the problem on the miner itself. theres no way to run it without the card unless you get the recovery image to work
