I'm also wondering how much coins got lost in exchanges.

People losing interest in crypto, losing passwords, forgetting how much coins they have, dying etc etc.

I would assume that this kind of "income" might be one of the major incomes of an exchange.

These coins are in no way lost. As long as an exchange operates, user funds work for the exchange. Furthermore, fiat banks dispose of their client deposits in favor of the bank if these deposits are not requested in the set time.

Its rumored to be an inside job as a cold storgae with 2 million dollars just doesn't get hacked so easily.

As for the security , no one can comment about it. They just say its gone, and we are supposed to believe it

Its actually confirmed to be an inside job. They won't even comment on how they got a cold storage hacked so easily.

Again , we have discussed in this thread a lot of times " it is impossible to hack/rob bitcoins from a cold wallet" that it supposed to be offline and never be connected on internet. They still have not post any real comment to what is happened that day (maybe they still don't know or don't have the "knowledge").

I'm sure they know, they're just embarrassed to admit that their 'cold' storage was tepid at best. BTER aren't good at this stuff but the guys working with them to find out what happened are. After the last one, this raises questions about how they will prove their new exchange 'really is secure, honest, it is this time'.

so they can't recover those 7200, using their fee? maybe dismiss some employers

Maybe in a few years, yeah.  But by that time many of you will forget they lost some funds over there..

After few years, first yes no one will remember about the hack. Secondly, they would claim to have used the money on other things and probably would have another hack

Yuppi ! I will try to request a couple of withdrawals of altcoins and I hope they will process them as soon as possible (because they have the altcoins).

Balances seem to be zeroed, or is it just me? I had some doges, but now I apparently have none. Hope they will fix this glitch in the nearest future.

Update: balances are available under the Withdraw/deposit section. My withdrawal request is being processed at the moment.

The withdraws done before that seems like to be put on hold.

Yes, and now I have almost nothing in my dogecoin balance! Submitted a ticket to the bter support, don't know what will come out of it. It seems that they didn't expect people running to withdraw the altcoins as soon as it became possible (if at all).

They seem to be kidding. I won't get to trading if I'm not able to withdraw my funds at first. And I'm more than sure that I will move my coins elsewhere from bter at the first opportunity, then will wait and see how it all turns out.

Latest update from Twitter:

The previous BTC balance has been moved to BTC-B which will be used as the reference for 100% compensating our user's BTC loss.

I hope they allow BTC-B to be traded. That way those that do not want to wait to be repaid (or do not think they will ever be repaid) can sell their BTC-B to more patient/hopeful people.

Do you all think there are any good trading opportunities that can be taken advantage right after trading resumes? Obviously there will be a rush to withdraw all types of coins. Is there any reason people would really want to buy or sell a certain coin after trading resumes?

Bter was a good exchange in respect to liquidity, with fast withdrawals and deposits. If they will be able to keep withdrawal and deposit times low, they may have a chance. Though, evidently, they will see hard times lying ahead of them.
