Battleship game is well known as a pencil and paper game. Now, you can play it against the Provably Fair AI dealer! Simply place your bet, arrange ships of your fleet and destroy enemy.

Payout is determined as ratio of player's hits to dealer's hits. 1% house edge only.

Provably Fair AI
As any other game at CoinXerox, the Battleship game is provably fair. The dealer's ships positions, orientations and his shots are determined before game start.

At first, server make initial shuffle that determines ships positions, orientations and all shots. Hashed initial shuffle is published to player for later verification. Then client seed is used for reshuffle in order to make final shuffle that is used in game-play.
Because result of the random shuffle may not comply with all Battleship game rules, there are a few additional processing in order to be able to use any final shuffle.
If two ships overlap, for the second ship the first empty square is used. Finding an empty square is done diagonally in left top direction. When left or top corner is reached, finding continues at the opposite side of grid.

Dealer's shots are determined by probability and provably fair final shuffle.
At first, for each square the probability that the square contains a ship is computed. Then squares with the same highest probability are selected. Finally, the latest shot offset from provably fair final shuffle is used to choose a one square which dealer fires on.

You can arrange your ships by random reshuffling only. We believe that this is the fastest and the most comfortable way.

Because you resigned. Resign dialog window pointing out the game rules - "Are you sure to resign? You lose your bet!".

You cannot stop the game to take winnings. Game is finished only when dealer's or player's fleet is completely destroyed.

When it's allowed you should remember that probability of overcome dealer any time during the game is higher, so payout would be lower in that case. It's possible to apply similar rules as minesweeper sites use, but the game would remotely resemble Battleship...

I think the game is more exciting when you are in winning position and you still have to watch the dealer whether he will hit you or not. Or when you are losing and you still have a chance to catch up the dealer. That's a Battleship!

Anyway these game rules guarantee low volatility. When you lose, the lose is not a big one. It's statistically expected that your winnings should be between 31% and 2720% of your bet.

This gives aprox. 2% house edge.

As I already wrote, it's expected that you can win up to 2720% of your bet. And in the worst case you can lose up to 69% of your bet.

I still think, it will be better to allow the player to do so.

It takes a lot of time to complete one game and you either lose a small % or win a small % (most probably). Or can you make the game super fast?

One thing that maybe should be implemented is that when you destroy all the big ships and you have to find the 1 tile small ships its really boring, maybe make an option to make it automatic and the game searches for you and that would speed up the process of fidning them since there is no strategy for the last 1 tile ships it wont matter

Yes pretty much. It should shoot fast so that we dont waste time finding the last ships, sometimes i have 30-40 tiles left to search and it takes a good amount of time. Thanks for considering it

I think mathematically perfect strategy is not a problem for PvP Battleship. Certainly, there is a perfect strategy. But when you need to choose one square from N empty squares, mathematics is useless. And when you hit a ship, you don't need an advanced computation to search for rest of ship. Human reasoning is sufficient for that. I think, computer advantage is unlikely in the Battleship game.

EDIT: If anybody know about some mathematical analysis of Battleship game, post it here, please.

I think there is a strategy to make a good bot to play this.
You aren't choosing only from n empty squares to find enemy ships in the beginning, but have to look at the size and how they can be on the board. So it's more of a good search strategy.

As already mentioned here, house edge is not high. You cannot compare number of your hits to number of random hits generated by provably fair system! Read the thread main post for details.

I would like to publish two other statistics:

• On average, player wins in aprox. 92% of games (measured by hits you wrote about).
• Expected mean hits rate is: 19.85 for player and 14.17 for the dealer. So on the average player wins and the dealer has 14 hits only. To take a winnings you need to overcome the average outcome only - to destroy the dealer's fleet before he hits you 14 times.

Keep in your mind, there is no game Artificial Intelligence. Comparing the number of hits is confusing.

We are seriously thinking about a more intelligent dealer. A dealer bot that doesn't play randomly but that are looking for enemy ships as a human does. It could be more fun and even payout odds confusion would be removed.

So far it seems that the biggest challenge would be to merge an bot program with provably fair system. How to include an dynamic behavior into fixed provably fair final shuffle? We need to resolve this first.

Yes it is a nice change to see a different game to show it's face on the gambling section, i love battle ships have done since i was a kid

The house edge does not need to be high to help make it a success it needs to be as low as you can possibly go without making a profit 0.5 - 1 is plenty enough for most sites and they have hung around for long enough.

Listen to your potential investors gamblers is a good start to making it a success

Yes, definitely! AI changes probabilities from the base.

Good news is that we just finished functional prototype of provably fair Battleship AI. We need to test it now, recalculate statistics in order to estimate the new pay line / payout rules etc. If everything will go fine, I think within next 48 hours we can deploy the new version.

I'm pretty sure one of them was sending a "nuke", or something like that (took out 9 squares, if I remember correctly).

It might be a good game to take ideas from baumi, if you're looking for some.

Yep you are right, as long as the bot has the same powers and knows how to use them wisely there is no need to recalculate the odds but then again what i want is PvP and maybe make the 1-tile ships 2-tile because its really annoying

Yes, for moving to work, a lot would have to be changed in the game, I guess. One way I see it being functional in this type of game is if board squares aren't considered only to be "shot at"/"not shot at", but rather "shot at N turns ago", perhaps with a numeric indicator, or a progressive change in color of said indicator in the targeted square, to show exactly how many turns passed since. This should give the player a way to determine how accurate the information he has about the board and ship positions is, and to adjust his tactics accordingly. I think this would make for a much deeper strategy game, but again, it would be a fundamental change in the way the game works.

Anyway, a few more ideas of special abilities that could be included:
Radar - temporarily reveals a small area of the board.
More Guns - allow players to temporarily have more than one shot per turn.
Reinforcements - I think I actually saw this in another battleship style game, but - call for additional ships, so you can keep on playing until they are destroyed. Considering the currently applied game rules, maybe allow only positioning ships in areas previously not shot at?

The game is nice, but I do see a big problem in it. As I see, most of the gamblers prefers fast-paced games like dice, they may play a battleship game occasionally but very few of them will spend half an hour to play just 5 games.

Yes, I think it could be fun. Not changing much. It will be nice option for people who want faster paced game. But I am not sure about the bets in this kind of "short game mode" I think that in normal version max bet should be increased to at least 100 mBTC and in short version it should remain 50 mBTC.

The computer fires randomly so it's not a difficult game lol and I don't think you have to win by that much to profit. Maybe 20-12 or 20-13 is enough.

We are seriously thinking about a more intelligent dealer. A dealer bot that doesn't play randomly but that are looking for enemy ships as a human does. It could be more fun and even payout odds confusion would be removed.

So far it seems that the biggest challenge would be to merge an bot program with provably fair system. How to include an dynamic behavior into fixed provably fair final shuffle? We need to resolve this first.

I don't know but maybe release the bot program as open source? And if it always does the same action when it is in the same situation people should be able to see it was a fair game lol.
But it may be easier to find ways to beat the computer that way, or copy the program and play with the bot against the server too. Maybe create several bots and choose one to use each game at random? xD

I realized that immediately when started new game . Now it`s more funny, but not that all as I lost one game 20:19 .

Good job with the new AI. I played 3 times against it, and didn't win once - it could also be the case that I suck at this game, now that I think about it, but well done anyway.

As for new changes to the game rules, I would probably go with either the suggestion someone made earlier for making the game faster (or add a game mode that allows this), or the possibility to cash out during the game, maybe at the expense of some additional coins. I would also like to see a Player versus Player mode, but I suspect it would quickly turn into a programming battle, to determine who has the best bot... and that reminds me of AT Robots.

I agree. At beginning the main purpose of AI was to change payout line, because too many people thought the house edge is too high. But the game has a new dimension with AI - the impact pretty surprised me. I think there is practically no difference between human and bot playing now.

The initial purpose of the "Resign" button was to "cancel" game, e.g. when you are trying game by play for faucet and then you want to immediately start new game with higher bet. So the button is not intended for common using.

The winnings shown below grids is indicative only. It's accurate at the end of game, but I'm not sure whether it's accurate during the game. I suppose that payout would be quite lower when player can stop the game whenever he want but the dealer cannot.

The purpose of captcha codes (or Tic Tac Toe game in this case) is a protection against spam bots. Someone can make a program that aims to exploit free Bitcoins by requesting them many and many times. This extra step should reveal you are a human or not.

There is a faucet restriction that you can request free Bitcions maximally six times in the last hour. When you exceed this limit, you have to wait (or make a deposit, of course).

We already got many reactions for Tic Tac Toe. It's interesting that reactions are always extreme - you either love it or you hate it

The most common mistake is that people don't understand TTT bot playing style. Keep in your mind that aim of the bot is not to defeat you but blocking you. Play offensively and don't worry that TTT bot will make winning line before you. When you understand bot playing style, I grantee you that to win TTT faucet is far faster then retyping malformed captcha code.

Look & feel stays same, this update was focused on dealer bot. The bot computes probabilities of ship occurrence for each square. Then provably fair shuffle is used to select one of the top squares.

As mentioned above, there are several tricks how to manage the game. In my personal opinion, these tricks do the Battleship game much more interesting than e.g. minesweeper, because skill influence results, not a chance only.

Don't worry. It's still a game of chance. You can win or lose. But you can be more successful (similar to Blackjack card counting). Try it and you will see that dealer bot is not an "unbeatable machine". The old bot was just too weak.

Payout is calculated as ratio of player's hits to dealer's hits. There is only 1% house edge. This low house edge is recognizable on draw only. Even on one hit win, you are winning coins...

EDIT: In this thread, you can read a little bit about payout function "evolution". Because this game is not offered anywhere else (like e.g. Blackjack), we had to design game rules from scratch. Unfortunately for us, we undervalued weaknesses that led to temporary game suspend. Some players were able to beat the dealer in constant manner.
