Title: ZenMiner (unmoderated) service discussion thread
Post by: reactor on May 28, 2014, 12:18:26 PM
Hi everyone!

This is a new thread for discussing ZenMiner.com, the cloud hosting/management service currently used for both GAW and Zeus products.

Will put the beef in the second post to make updates easier.

And the info post!

The site is here:

http://zenminer.com/ (http://zenminer.com/)

Keep in mind, the homepage contents are changing daily as they update things, but we'll update here as things are updated online.  It is a new service so they're likely kicking the tires a bit on everything

Support contact: support@zenminer.com, or you can follow the link at the top of the site

Standalone software: https://gawminers.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202184744-cgminer-source-and-config

Thanks community!

Community Question - Has anyone gotten their zenBox up and online?

Another user in another thread inquired because we do get the HDMI cable with the RPi, so I'm curious if we get any local output from the device outside of what is on the Zen site, but unfortunately I haven't been able to get mine on yet (work in progress).

Please include screenshots of any UI if you have it up and running!

finially got it to register and the miners page shows:

Updating your device for New Fury....

forever... will let it run and see what happens.

At the same point as a lot of people currently with the 'Updating your device for new Fury' (on one screen when I could select between the miner models it actually said 'Furry' lol).

Only been sitting like this for about 10 minutes now, but will toss out stats for overnight results on clevermining if/when I get it hasing!

I left my Pi plugged in but jacked the Fury to a PC because I don't want to wait anymore. Plug it in then do the USB. It will fail to install drivers so head over here:

http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/pages/usbtouartbridgevcpdrivers.aspx

Install the right one for Windows and you should be good to go. Make yourself a .bat file for cgminer and you should do fine from there. Fury has 6 chips so you need to change that and also enter your COM port found in device manager. Here's the example from GAW:

cgminer.exe -o stratum+tcp://us.clevermining.com:3333 -u 1KQxLLQNxgn2upd4TtGbtiRdm3f5UWC9k8 -p x --nocheck-golden --chips-count 128 --ltc-clk 328 -S //./COM4

Performance right now:

avg MHs: 1.228 WU: 1333.1

I'm mining at Clever.

Thanks! Don't want to wait for a response for zenminer support on the 'updating your device' issue. Will attempt that tomorrow after a night of hashing through windows.

Hey everyone, I am Eric, tech support with zenMiner. I think I've had the pleasure of exchanging support emails with a few of you already.

So to address the issue at hand, essentially we're just dealing with some launch day snags. We had a such a high level of activations as soon as the service went live, even more than we had anticipated. We have GAW Miners to thank for that, putting our hardware in the hands of so many of their customers in such a short time!

With such rapid growth comes a little pain too... We're working as quickly and diligently as possible to iron out the issues with delays in activation. We'll be posting hourly updates until the system is working as intended.

Thank you all for your patience! Soon you'll all be happily hashing away.

I'm mining at Clever.

I am also going with direct cgminer until zenminer is up,  but getting way too many invalids and hardware errors. Are you getting hardware errors.

15 hardware errors on 195 accepted. I am using the Fury at 6 chips.

I'm running at 1.3 MH/s on cgminer with 2400 accepted to clevermining with 131 hardware errors, which is not too great. Using the config they posted with chip count at 6. Hopefully when I get to work tomorrow the zenMiner stuff will be sorted out, and I can test with that.

Sorry for the delay! Here is the proposed timeline for the zenMiner site to be fully operational.

The following times listed are in Eastern time for May 29th, 2014:

12:01 AM: Last minute fixes in registration to support the increase in traffic.
3:00 AM: Database management and improved design for scaling laterally.
7:00 AM: QA testing and UI updates.
11:00 AM: Begin accepting new user registration while continuing to improve customer experience and UI enhancements.

I will be providing further updates as we get near the final deadline. Thank you all for (still) being patient.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with a few gpus and gridseeds but can't figure out the Fury yet. Pretty much I can't figure out the name of the port it's hook up to. So far I have sudo ./cgminer -o stratum+tcp://stratum.nicehash.com:3333 -u 1A8TcrHSAsizFh9pTTYozg3EHupGjoMY3B -p x --nocheck-golden --chips-count 6 --ltc-clk 328 -S ....which is where I would appreciate some help.

I'd like to get this thing running and not have to wait for Zen. It starts up but reads  [2014-05-29 00:40:17] Started cgminer 3.1.1
[2014-05-29 00:40:17] All devices disabled, cannot mine! , because I need the -S part. Thanks!

Get the Virtual Port Driver for the Fury here... http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx

I got it running, but too many hardware errors. Anyone else running but with too many hardware errors?

It seems like has been a bit of a rough launch; which is a bit disappointing seeing how it's the only way to update the firmware on the Generation A GAWminers.

However, thank you though for keeping us updated and for posting the timeline. It makes it a lot more bearable knowing what is going on behind the scenes, and it sounds like you guys have a solid plan on getting the train back on the tracks.  :D

Thank you for understanding! Our team has been working around the clock to get "the train back on the tracks."  We've also been in constant communication with the team at GAW Miners to ensure we get their customers online and hashing as soon as possible. Any questions or issues can be sent to support@zenminer.com.

As always, I'll keep you guys posted on major updates.

Sent in a support question to zenminer and Eric shot me back a reply very fast which I appreciate.

Unfortunately, the answer wasn't what I was hoping for. I was wondering if a USB Wifi adapter could be used with the zenController, and was told wireless support was not included because 'a wired connection to your miner is always going to be more reliable than wireless'.

Very disappointed in that. I've been running gridseeds (and now the Fury) via PC over wireless with no issues at all.

You should be able too. I understand that any limitation would be at the raspberry pi side. Just  visit the raspberry pi at http://www.raspberrypi.org/ for some research and get back to us on how we can also do this :)

If we had access to the Pi itself with the zenMiner software loaded, sure.

Here is the exact quote from the email that I should have just tossed into my last post.

oh so even if we had a wireless usb.. we couldn't add it... thats a big drawback....

While wireless devices are not supported in the launch release, we may be including support in a future release. In the meantime, for those of you who require wireless, you can always use an inexpensive ($25 used) wireless bridge device like the one found here -> http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Linksys-WET11-Wireless-Ethernet-Bridge/dp/B000066JQU

This guy did a neat job.

I got my Black Widow up and running with zenminer today.  I had a brand new in box EVGA 1300w PSU I was going to use but it was DOA.  Luckily I had an 850w Corsair lying around so I used that instead.  Zenminer will take some getting used to, and I've seen hash rates from 10-25MH/s which is bizarre.  I have only had it connected for about 30 minutes or so.

Here's my link to my blog with the review on it.http://ryangrim.es/BlackWidowReview (http://ryangrim.es/BlackWidowReview)

There's a surprise at the end of my review in case you want to save a bit of $$$ on a GawMiner purchase.

Thanks!

2 6 pins worked perfectly.  I went back and re-did the connections with the 1300w PSU and forcing 8 pins into the connectors was what caused it to not power up.  As soon as I used 6 pins they worked great.

Thanks!  I rushed through it to get it up but I'm impressed with how easy it was.  Definitely a 1.0 product but I like it so far.  Here's what I would like to see:

1) Active Pool notification - I don't know what pool my miners are pointed at.
2) Hashrate graphs
3) Notification center if a miner goes down (even if I have 2-3 connected to 1 zenminer)
4) Multi pool support for multiple miners - The ability to point different asics at different pools within the same zenminer device.

Looks like the UI has been upgraded a bit! It now contains pool results (Accepted Shares/Rejected Shares/Discarded/Stale/Diff1 Work/Get Failures/Remote Failures) on the Miner screen.

It's a start in the right direction.

Looks like the UI has been upgraded a bit! It now contains pool results (Accepted Shares/Rejected Shares/Discarded/Stale/Diff1 Work/Get Failures/Remote Failures) on the Miner screen.

It's a start in the right direction.

Must be nice....my sd card in my zenminer came with the NOOBS image. I have spent the last 6 hours trying to get this "plug and play" system set up. After a couple of hours I was able to get the image from GAW, so far I am not impressed as no one even knows the user name and password for the image. I was able to figure it out but still cannot get my miner to register with the code. Is anyone else having any issues like this?

Yeah, according to Eric there is no root access to the device with the zenMiner software loaded onto the Pi so the username/password are pretty useless.

Dudes, just do what's listed here for now and wait for the Zen service to mature a bit more: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=628615.msg6999386#msg6999386

Sending the controller out without an image is unsat. I understand the service just launched, but seriously sending out a unit with the raspberry noobs image...wtf

As previously mentioned in our emails exchanged, we support the hardware and the service. But the configuration is specific to each retailer. In this case, GAW provided the wrong image by mistake. I apoligize for the inconvenience, but I am sure that GAW Miners will do whatever it takes to make it right. Once you receive your new properly configured unit, I assure you I will support its connectivity to our service til the day its last hash is calculated.

I certainly do understand... As a miner myself, I prevent downtime at all costs... But sometimes that means a creative solution while I work out my preferred method :) I know that doesn't make things right at this very moment, but I will forward this information to GAW as well to further assist you in getting a replacement unit.

And the info post!

The site is here:

http://zenminer.com/ (http://zenminer.com/)

Keep in mind, and this isn't being snarky, the homepage contents are changing daily as they update things, but we'll update here as things are updated online.  It is a new service so they're likely kicking the tires a bit on everything

Terms and conditions: n/a

Support contact: support@zenminer.com, or you can follow the link at the top of the site

Standalone software: https://gawminers.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202184744-cgminer-source-and-config

And... this is all I've got right now.  Please update this thread with your experiences using ZenMiner.com as well as your thoughts on the service.  Also, in the name of transparency this is an unmoderated thread (community forum and all), but please do stay objective.  Try to only comment on tangible things (like statistics, concrete service enhancements or problems, being told one thing then another happens), etc., since the goal is to openly and actively discuss the service so users can get the most out of it.

Thanks community!

Edit (5/28): Updated support email, looks like this one is accurate per the website.

Edit (5/28): Added placeholder for software download link when available.  Software link available, testing build shortly.  Builds!  Just need device to test.

You got that Pi software? Mine came without the ZenMiner image on it

Everything works great so far, easy setup! I guess it helped not getting my package until after the zenminer system updates.
I do have one question. I must be missing something obvious, how do I switch between the 2 pools on my lists  ???

Yeah, according to Eric there is no root access to the device with the zenMiner software loaded onto the Pi so the username/password are pretty useless.

Login is root/gawminers. :)

There's a couple of python scripts running as daemons that run that spawn the cgminer and communicate with zenminers.com, you need to disable start01 and startserver if you don't want to use their stuff.

initctl stop start01
initctl stop startserver

Now you can run screen -R to open the existing cgminer instance. CTRL-C to kill it, now start a new screen and run a new cgminer with whatever options you want. It's basically the same as running your own Pi now but with a pre-installed OS and cgminer supporting the GAWminers.

I don't think you can currently, looking at the config file that gets pushed down it just takes them in order so the first is your primary pool with the others as backups. If you want to change the order you need to remove them and add them again to get the new order in the UI, then the config change will get pushed to the miners.

I think the ZenController is a really cool idea, a lot of people will find it invaluable, it's just maybe not quite ready for prime time at the moment. That said, being an 'IT guy' myself I really don't want a managed offering though no matter how good, I like to tinker and that requires root access, hopefully I will still be able to get the firmware updates through another route.

I've tried several different pools and all but 1 report major reject %.  Like 10-20%.  LTCRabbit is the only one that I have around .3% reject rate.  Since I use the zenminer, how can I troubleshoot this since I can't actually control the device?

Make sure that the pool has vardiff. If the diff is not at the right level you will see a lot of rejects.

@crackfoo, stand by on the gridseeds... The developers are refining the configs for them and hope to push them out today or early tomorrow. As soon as you see the gridseed option in the dropdown, you'll be good to go. Sorry for the delay.

sounds good. thanks

A big feature now would be the ability to mine separate pools with separate hardware devices.

Thanks!

Many zenMiner users are reporting the same, however, all have confirmed that pool stats (i.e. real stats) are typically much closer to what you'd expect them to be. We're actively working on refining the detail of the statistics provided in the zenOS UI.

What does the discarded number actually mean?  I realize that the no-submit-stale is NOT being used, so if all shares are being sent to the pool, what is being discarded and where?  By the way after about a half a day of running Furys, my accepts are 1862 and my discards are 2902.

Which browser are you using?  The display got messed up (not showing anything anymore) under Chrome within the last hour, where it has worked fine for the last day, even logging out and back in multiple times.  I tried IE for the hell of it and i now see all the nice statistics.

What does the discarded number actually mean?  I realize that the no-submit-stale is NOT being used, so if all shares are being sent to the pool, what is being discarded and where?  By the way after about a half a day of running Furys, my accepts are 1862 and my discards are 2902.
Hi Eric, can you tell me what the "Discarded" number in the Zen UI actually means?

Sure, I am requesting a detailed write up from our dev team to explain those numbers. Stand by on that.

Also, know that we are always refining the statistics and data to address accuracy and detail. So don't assume what you see now is the actual baseline, things may change a bit in the coming days/weeks as we improve the reporting and interface.

Well the way zenOS works, once you have the right image loaded onto your SD (the link in prior post), there is no OS versioning to be concerned with... All future updates come via the cloud service entirely transparent to the user. So you'll always be running the latest version of zenOS.

Details about controller status are certainly value added and will be included in future updates.

or can you provide instructions how to flash it using a tablet

That method is only for people having issues with an out-of-the-box zenMiner controller. Most customers have no issues just plugging in the device and logging right in.

I just wanted to stop by and say that Eric has been great with answering my questions very quickly (usually just a couple of minutes).  I've had everything up and running smoothly for the last 24 hours or so, except for the discard rate.  I'm looking forward to seeing what new features will be added.

I am just a little curious on what security risks the ZenController poses on my network.  My plan is to eventually segment off the controller and miners on to their own subnet or their own network entirely.

Seems that the save button doesn’t work when I add a second pool. Once I leave the pools page the 2nd pool I added disappears.

Actually, I can’t change the pool even on the original pool I have. Save button doesn’t work.

EDIT: seems to work with 1 pool now, but only if I log out and back in…

Probably a dumb question but I will ask anyways.
I want to change pools but leave the one I already have as a backup.
Is there not a button or selection setting for which of the pools I want as my main pool?
The recent updates are great by the way.
Each one is making it easier to use and more useful.
Also is the Map option supposed to show where you are or your pool??

If I already have a Pi, do I have to purchase the zenController from GAW or can I just download an image and purchase an activation key somewhere?

Eric, another question.  How do you handle the ZenMiner being resold?  For example, if someone sells their ASIC and ZenMiner as a package, but the ZenMiner has already been registered... can the number on the side be used to register another account? Or can the original account be modified to change the username for a new owner?  Would the old/new owners need to go through you guys to get this sorted on a case by case basis?

I wish I had thought to ask that when I interviewed Thomas about the controller.

I also cannot get the one click pool switching to work either still.

It says Multi Pool Switching on the site and I took it to mean simple switching.
My mistake I think.

Not already supporting gridseed orbs/blades may have been something you'd want to have disclosed before selling them to people who buy them for their blades.  :-\

In fact, any limitation over some of the other RPi distro's out there, like the lack of API access is actually quite important to a lot of us.

You said you'd be adding in support for blades tonight, I'll be looking for it.

Title: Re: ZenMiner (unmoderated) service discussion thread

2 6 pins worked perfectly.  I went back and re-did the connections with the 1300w PSU and forcing 8 pins into the connectors was what caused it to not power up.  As soon as I used 6 pins they worked great.

SMH...

Did you bother to look at the PCIe pin out or did you just solder your +12v to the top 4 wires? You're lucky you didn't short out your PSU. ::)

It didn't power up because 8 Pin PCIe has the same number of +12v lines as 6 Pin PCIe, (3).  :D

It has 2 extra GND wires instead of +12v & GND. 8 Pin EPS on the other hand, that has (4) +12v & (4) GND.

I don't know what wattage you are working at, but also bear in mind that 6 pin PCIe is only rated for a conservative 75w. You could likely go to 125w before exceeding the pin rating, but be sure your wires that are feeding the pins are at least 18AWG. 22AWG, which is common on some of the cheaper connectors will melt.

+1 to this.  I ordered one from GAW as I keep having issues with the mining PC I have my blade currently hooked to.  GAW recommends it as a purchase on the Blade sales page and it didn't even work for it when I received last week.  I have been out of town for past few days, so if that has changed, will be welcome news.

I want to add my kudos to Eric at GAWminers support for his excellent communication and patience in getting my zenminer up and running.  Like alot of folks here, I thought the pi was the interface and I was going through all sorts of config shenanigans directly with the pi until Eric explained how the zenminer is controlled through a WAN interface on a PC, not by a keyboard and display hooked up to the pi. GAWminers is standing behind their product, and while it has it's quirks, they so far has awesome customer service.

I thought I would go ahead and post my own personal opinion on the Zenminer after three days of trying to get it running.

While the software seems to have a nice web interface and the ability to view miner status remotely would be cool, I have to say that I am not a big fan.

Here are the three not insignificant issues I have with the product.

   1. Lack of documentation.  There is no "official" setup guide that I have yet been able to easily find.  Lots of people have put up their own on the forums or other places and Eric at Zenminers seems to be a decent guy who tries really hard to help but waiting a day for an email response on how to setup, configure and troubleshoot an installation is ineffective and frustrating.  Also, the information posted in anecdotal guides is often misleading.  As an example, I have seen several threads where it was claimed that the Zenminer supported both Fury's and Gridseeds on the same miner.  This quote from Eric in an email disavows that; "Please unplug the Gridseed as it is not supported yet. Once it is supported, you'll still only be able to use one type of device per controller."

   2. No "real support system" in place.  Again, Eric seems nice and answers emails and posts in forums but one guy trying to plug holes in a dike in such an informal manner is not a support system.  My own experience is that there is about an 8-12 hour delay between emails and after two days of working with him directly on getting my miner running, I would still not be mining if I did not have another rPi that I am just running cgminer on.  They could fix this by getting a ticketing system in place and letting users post their issues via their website.  With ticketing they would be able to correlate common problems and resolve them or update their non-existent documentation to better educate their users.  This would be much more effective than running one poor guy into the ground.

   3. Lack of transparency.  Zenminer needs to put on their website their terms and conditions for using the software and clearly state what they are getting out of this as well as a customer privacy statement.   Also, they need to give their users root access to their devices.  Obfuscating this leaves room for doubt as to what is going on behind the scenes.  Is my device which is sitting behind my firewall, but which they clearly have remote access to secure? Can they siphon off my mining?  What other access do they get that I am not aware of because they have not posted their terms and conditions and/or provided clear documentation?  I also would like to see more about the company, who the principles are other than Eric,  how many customers they are supporting, and what other mining related activities they are involved in.   Leaving us to fill in the blanks only leads to wild speculation that ultimately isn't good for their image.

At this juncture I would say that the product is "alpha" at best and I will probably not be using it until it, and the company mature and I am certain I won't get "Goxed".

I need to enable API access to the mining client as well as set log timing at 5 seconds to maintain compatibility with leaserig proxy speed reporting.

These settings are usually done from the command line or a JSON conf file. Some guidance on how to make these changes to the software would be helpful.

Also, under the hardware, I don't see a way to specify Gridseed Orb/Blade. Only zeus clones are up there.

Thank you

to me

DarkKnight,

Logging is already set to a 5 sec interval, we currently don't offer API access but may at a later time.

Also, we're releasing Gridseed support hopefully by the end of today.

It's been a week, gridseed support is nowhere to be found, and zero communication coming from Zenminer about the issue. If "by the end of today" means more than a week, I wouldn't hold your breath for "API access at a later time".  ::)

Eric, this is bad business. If you don't have it done by your own deadline (or shortly thereafter), nut up and post why. Silence pisses off paying customers. When you say nothing at all, it seems like the work just isn't important enough for you to get done, in which case, nobody should bother with your service. You are doing *something* during the day, and it's been a fucking week. Explain why it's taking so long & fix the support advertised, or start issuing refunds. This isn't some kickstarter project you can just blow off when you don't feel like working. A product was sold with implicit functionality that doesn't exist. I don't know what it is about this damn community where endless delays, missed deadlines, and zero communication have become accepted behavior in business.

http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-mining-manufacturer-hashfast-enters-chapter-11-bankruptcy/ (http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-mining-manufacturer-hashfast-enters-chapter-11-bankruptcy/) <-- Is what happens to companies that behave like this.

Good business is (in order):

  • Delivering working products on time
  • Promptly handling returns of non-working products
  • Good customer service
  • Staying connected with your customers.

GAW has great customer service, and they are well connected with their customers, but it took them over 2 months to credit me for defective equipment, and when I used that credit to purchase a blade, it shipped a week late. Part of that purchase was a Zenminer that was sold to me as running the blade I ordered. Now I have the blade in hand and the Zenminer doesn't work.

Put yourself in my position.

I'm not aware of too many privately held companies that disclose all of their employees or the internal working of their company, such as what other avenues they might be pursuing. In that respect, I'm not sure it's reasonable to demand that information.

That said, I do believe they are sorely in need of more transparency and better support. It is an alpha product, which clearly wasn't ready for release, but people get dollar signs in their eyes, and throw caution and process to the wind.

They can't enable remote features and functionality through their website without access to your device. That means they will always have access to do nefarious things should they choose to. You should have recognized that from the beginning, as the remote access is the only real selling point of this product.

Also, Zenminer is a division or subsidiary of Gaw miners.

Got mine free yesterday, it just stays on the zenminer site with "searching for your miner" how long does this take?
the gear seems to be mining its using power under load.

Same here, had mine for 2 weeks now, website can't find it. Zenminer shows it is trying to connect to an IP in their range but doesn't get a response. Was told this was being elevated to higher support, then nothing for 2 days....

Ok, I can easily explain what's going on here. The ZenController was initially developed for GAW Miners to accompany their Generation A devices. GAW used these controllers in their labs and on their own devices for some time to test them and perform quality control before shipping them to customers.

It is not uncommon in this industry for a manufacturer to ship a controller with an "initial configuration" that reflects the pool the device was initially set up to use. GAW QC'd every one of these controllers using their own devices and pools prior to shipping them.

HERE is what went wrong, and the fault is ZenMiner, not GAW. The config that came shipped on the device was supposed to be wiped away upon initial activation using the 4 digit code. We had a major flaw in our activation that did not permit the devices to connect to the cloud and receive the customer's pool information. Therefore, the initial pool information did not get overwritten. This is the single issue that our developers have been working non-stop to remedy as it is the one that is diverting all of our resources, including me (help desk).

I can assure you, and the entire community that the ZenController has *zero* malicious intent to redivert your hashes. This was a launch bug that we are taking full responsibility for and doing everything we can to fix.

We will provide the community with 100% transparency from this point until total resolution.

I've also followed the above link and will use that thread for future updates.

Writing often lacks the intonation that accompanies speech. I said 'demand' in the context of 'asking for information from an entity' vs the more literal translation of 'requiring instantaneous response'. That said, I still stand by what I said.

I have seen that thread and am following very closely.   At this point I would classify it as "suspicious"....Eric's explanation seems genuine and based on other pretty glaring bugs I have seen in the product, a reasonable one.

That said, I think we should be wary at this point.

This is a critical point for the company.  By their actions now they will be found trustful or not.

I believe Eric's explanation and it does make sense. I haven't used my Zen to mine since I first got it because it's not getting recognized by the website as being active. I have PCs mining so it's not a big deal. I also don't know if there is any benefit to the unit as far as better hashing/lower rejects or HW errors.

Just wondering, have you ever used any other Linux OS-based miner images (BAMT, PIMP, SMOS, etc?) - because if not, I can tell you, that each and every one of these images and many others, come pre-configured with the developer's pool info that's up and mining for them as soon as you power on.  It is up to you to ensure that you change it after the OS is launched, and you may be mining for the dev in the first few minutes until you make the change.  Now, I understand you did make your appropriate pool changes, and it would appear Zen is overwriting that info periodically, so that's REALLY ODD - no excuse for that.. but Eric's response seems genuine so I would say why don't you give him the benefit of the doubt?  If you completely don't trust them anymore then just use a different mining distro that's not cloud-based.  There are other Pi options for blades, you may want to check out Starminer (https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=19129.0) to start, there is a 'gridseed-blade' profile.  If you are experienced with Linux just run cgminer on raspbian.

Post by: zenMiner_Eric on June 13, 2014, 08:39:42 PM
As promised, I am delivering on my promise of full transparency with this issue.

After a thorough investigation, we've determined how the improper pool credentials were being inserted into one customer's (DarkKnight) ZenController configuration. Each ZenController is tracked by its unique MAC address which is hard-coded into every device. The controller communicates with ZenMiner cloud servers and identifies itself via MAC and activation code. The device DarkKnight received was previously assigned to GAW Labs as one of their early test models. We've determined that the MAC was not properly removed/reallocated in the ZenMiner database, therefore the controller still thought that it belonged to GAW Labs. This is why the pool information inputted by the customer was constantly overwritten, the controller was doing what it was supposed to. Unfortunately, the device was not properly provisioned to the new owner.

Since this issue only affected an early test device that was assigned to GAW Miners at one in point in time, it makes sense why we didn't see this as a wide-spread issue and identify it sooner. All subsequent controllers sent out were "fresh" devices that had never previously been provisioned to anyone. That doesn't change the fact that one of our devices made it into the hands of a customer and caused unacceptable operation. We've since purged the database of any entries from legacy test devices and are working with GAW Miners to ensure any future devices that are shipped have no prior association in the database.

We sincerely apologize to DarkKnight and hope to regain his trust as well as the trust of the community we serve.

I will post this into DarkKnight's thread once he reopens it.

I wanted to answer a very good question DarkKnight brought to me offline regarding how we'll be mitigating something like this in the future. We're currently redesigning our entire activation mechanism and implementing measures that would prevent one device from accidentally (or intentionally) being activated to another account without support intervention and the deletion of all prior account provisions to that device.

Title: Re: ZenMiner (unmoderated) service discussion thread

implementing measures that would prevent one device from accidentally (or intentionally) being activated to another account without support intervention and the deletion of all prior account provisions to that device.

I think this is good idea but I will caution you about some issues I have experienced working for a cable operator who "locked" cable modems in a similar fashion and has ended up with multiple issues where someone legitimately purchased a modem on ebay or other public sites only to have it refused to be provisioned because it was still mapped to another account.

as I understand your previous thread, you are mapping the mac address to the account.   This is going to bite you for in three ways in the future.

first, if your customer moves his SD card to another rPi, then the MAC address will change

same is true if they in the future use a wireless interface rather than the built in ETH interface

last, if someone decides to sell their rPi and it inadvertently gets picked up to run your software...well, you get the idea.

I would suggest you would be better off placing a user serial number in a config file so that it is mapped to the software and the user rather than using the hardware as your auth mechanism

it will save you, and your customers much grief in the future.

Not at this time, but we are including that feature soon. We've already got the basic functionality, just tweaking and refining it.

Glad to hear the image flash fixed your controller!

I am aware of what a default config is. This was something different as my pool information was actively being disabled and replaced after mining had commenced, even if I reentered the details directly into the client. Their cloud backed was jacking my controller remotely and making it mine for it's original owner. Being sold a new used Zenminer, in addition to being connected to a service that isn't fully developed, missing promised support for devices I had -- all of this led to what happened.

implementing measures that would prevent one device from accidentally (or intentionally) being activated to another account without support intervention and the deletion of all prior account provisions to that device.

There needs to be some reasonable protection against customers or other potential bad-actors trying to hook additional unauthorized RPi's into the zen cloud, I don't think a serial number is enough. Perhaps a MD5 hash of the MAC, activation code, and serial number could be enough. However, if the SD card or OS on it get's hosed, you don't want customers to be without their controller when they can just reflash. A custom serial would make that process difficult. The customer will need to understand that use of the service is tied to that specific RPi. It's no more complicated to switch an RPi out with another RPi than it is switch an SD card from one unit to another. I personally don't see it as a burden to require that particular RPi be used to use the service, and at the same time it provides some level of protection to Zen. I will say that I don't imagine their community of users will ever be so large that the resale market becomes too much a burden for support to address.

Once Eric explained that the activation was tied to the MAC and that I was sold a new used ZenController from GAW  ::), it made sense. Except that it should not have been able to put my pool details in if it wasn't registered to me. It was clear at that point that some mechanism was missing and Zen had allowed the device to be registered to two accounts. I can only hypothesize that because GAW had the device first, and their registration was older that it would write my pool, then override it with theirs as the cloud backend cycled through customers devices. That is why I suggested to Eric that Zen add in a safeguard to prevent MACs being re-registered in their system.

While I'm still very frustrated with my experience purchasing equipment with GAW, I will say that GAW and Zen did work together to quickly identify and resolve the bug in their back end. Eric was reasonably forthcoming with information about how their service works and how this happened. After our chat, I confident this a beta software issue rather than anything malicious.

I'm awaiting a new build of the Zen firmware that is supposed to resolve my specific issues. When I receive it and am able to test it I will report back.

I got a BW today and tried to hook it up to a PC where I already have a Fury running but it just would not install the drivers correctly. I plugged it into the new Zen I got for it and wow, it actually worked. About 50% discards on Clever straight up Vardiff... but it works.

If your pool supports VarDiff you can adjust it to get fewer discards and better rate.
Your pool will have instructions on how to do it. On the BW I would start with 1024 and work your way around a few with a test of at least 6 hrs each one to see which works best for you.

I haven't gotten home to hook it up yet, so it may activate without the code.

But that would defeat the purpose of actually buying a zencontroller rather than just flashing your own raspberry pi with the os, wouldn't it?

ok guys - what am i missing here.  I created an account/registration on the zenminer site, logged in after validating it, added the pools that i normally use, plugged in my zen controller and the corresponding miners, told the website to find my on-premise zen controller - to which it found successfully.  I am able to see the zen controller, and the corresponding USB devices found.  But mining is just not happening - i feel like i am missing something here.  I do not see a way to tell a miner to use a pool, let alone a 'go' or 'start' button.  What am i missing here guys/gals?!

I appreciate any ideas!

ok guys - what am i missing here.

I would double check your pools. There is a bug where it adds the default one from the miner. Also reboot it now that everything is setup.

Thanks for the idea.  I've restarted it a few times without any luck.

In terms of the pool configurations - i assume that it supports stratum.  I've been using the standard 'stratum+tcp://fully qualified pool name:port' syntax.  Same configuration that i had with BFGMiner with the same miners prior to the Zen Controller.

Yeah that should work.

Does the USB section list all your devices?

Yup - they all show up.

You could SSH into the box and see what it is doing.

I use putty.

username root
pass gawminers

screen -r  to check the miner session.

crtl-a-d to disconnect from miner session.

No change in status - things are still not hashing.  I've restarted a number of times and i've wiped out almost every pool that i had previously populated.  I'm pretty sure that I am doing something wrong, or have missed something, as I have 2 of the Zen Controllers that are doing the *exact* same thing.  Is it possible that some other activation is required?  Any other ideas?

What happens when you SSH into them?

Title: Re: ZenMiner (unmoderated) service discussion thread

After I SSH into them - i get connected - no issues there.  I can see all of the RPI processes running, including one named 'CRYPTO', but otherwise - nothing else looks weird or out of place.

are you running them through a hub? If so, try with them connected directly to the pi

Did you try running screen -r?

Title: Re: ZenMiner (unmoderated) service discussion thread
Post by: enso on July 17, 2014, 03:54:31 PM
yes - it states that there is no screen to take over.

Title: Re: ZenMiner (unmoderated) service discussion thread
Post by: MobileWill on July 17, 2014, 04:07:31 PM
yes - it states that there is no screen to take over.

So something is wrong that either the miner isn't running or its exiting. Which I have seen it exit but it restarts and then goes.

Btw did you click change hardware and set your hardware. I recently added another controller and I had to do it a few times.

You can keep running screen -r and see if you can catch it.

Title: Re: ZenMiner (unmoderated) service discussion thread
Post by: DarkKnight on July 18, 2014, 02:50:56 PM
You can keep running screen -r and see if you can catch it.

Use ~#watch "screen -ls" to monitor any screen sessions starting up and closing. It has a 2 second refresh, so you still may miss it, but it's better than repeating the command. Use CTRL-C to exit the watch.

It' entirely possible that you have the wrong binary on your RPi, and it closes on startup because it doesn't detect the right device.

It's important that you change your "hardware configuration" server side at least twice. Once to something that isn't your hardware type (e.g. select gridseed, if you use zeus), wait 10 minutes, then once back to your hardware. Leave your miners disconnected during this process. Once you have selected your hardware, wait another 10 minutes to be safe, connect your hardware and powercycle the RPi.

The server definitely pushes a different binary when you switch hardware manufacturers. You need to give time for the RPi to pick the commands up from the server and time for the binaries to download. I have no concept of how long it will actually take you to download the binary, so 10 minutes is a safe period.

Are you using a compatible USB2 hub? Try connecting your miner directly to your RPi until it gets picked up and working ok. Further, you need to monitor the power consumption rather than your pool to see if it's mining if you aren't SSH'ed in and looking for screen sessions.

Does anyone know how to get this thing activated?

It was just a front end issue. They are fine now and are upgrade servers.

new to zenminer
But have a question with Pool list from the ZenOS
I can put more the one pool to save. But do not know how to switch pool priority.
For example
I have 3 pool saved on the list and i want to use the 3rd pool to be mining. cant figure out to drag or put that pool on top to mine.
I have been just reentering the url and info everytime i change pool.
Is there a fix or Im i missing something?
thanks

At this time you can't. You just have to copy and paste the order you want. Its annoying I know. They are supposed to add the feature eventually.

Bought a Gawminer warmachine, and i'm unable to configure this with zenminer. Is there no support yet? The option is there, but when i click on it doesn't show war machine. I have black widow, fury and falcon as options. What is going on, are these things used? Was there supposed to be an activation code or something?

I know my hardware is 99% sure it's correct. I also know the pool is set up correctly.

Has Zenminers fully set up support for gawminer yet, or is there some other reason i'm unable to use it. No tech support, but opening a ticket which as been 48 hours and nothing. No phone, nothing online. I'm completely stuck here and haven't been able to find a thing online how to fix this problem

Anyone else have a war machine and zenminer and knows what is going on or thinks they know the problem? Could it be zenminer has not set up configurations on there end yet?

I see that the WarMachine is now an option on the ZenController.
I do not have one to test with right now though.

How do you qualify for ZenPoints?

Thanks

I run my miner in a datacenter which has a strict firewall between it and the isp.

What ports are required for the zenminer to connect to zenminer.com/zenos? It never detects my controller.

I'm the firewall admin and i have all traffic currently allowed out from the miner with out any change.. super annoying.

i'm reflashing the sd to see if that make any difference.

Once you hold BTC in your Zencloud account you get the points. It's about 7-10% interest yearly from what I read.
So I'd rather not risk it and have them go MtGox on me. Besides, when transferring money to them (on your own account) it quickly hops over several accounts and gets split a few times. I don't feel a big deal of trust there ;)

As far as I can figure out you'll get 0.000001 per 0,01 you hold.

they take nearly 50% back in fee's. So while the initial earnings look much higher than typical pool's, I think they earn it back by their service fee... However the service fee's reduce over time...

maybe I'm wrong though.

I've been hit and miss with the zen miner pi. The first time I tried it just wouldn't work. Fine, hook up the miner to a PC and run it there instead. I got another Black Widow and then that driver would just not work, not at all on the same machine or a different one. Hook up the latest Zen miner pi and low and behold it works for the one... then I plug in the other and it worked for that one too. Flaky.

In the mean time try Minera. Its a image for the RPi that should work since it supports multiple miners. Just make sure and save a copy of the image that came with the zencontroller. Or just use a diff SD card.

Sadly my original ZenOS SD card was stolen before I took possession of the package...the SD card and power supply were removed from my package! So I had to go off what ZenOS I could download off the web. I've been running my BW off my gaming rig currently via USB and MultiMiner/BFG

I do need to find a good setup for an r-pi miner controller for my Black Widow asap. You're saying I can install Minera on Linux for R-Pi or something? Maybe NOOBS or??

Not that couple of cents are that important but to make sure you guys are aware of this .

I have bought prime hashlet yesterday and of course since it was like just the start of the day after minning and all I got about 0.0002 or so in profits , you guys took maintainence fee for a whole day where as I mine like half a day.

Its alright I am fine with it , but many people won't be , specially if its a huge purchase not 1 mh/s like mine :D , keep this in mind.

My zencloud name is 'themporium' you can check it if you want.

I was looking into it a bit today.  I wish they'd offer just the ZenMiner controller as an SD card for those of us who already have a Pi...

The image is available for download. Flash it to an SD card and pop it in any Pi.

[edit]
Here's a link for how to do it. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UilAJ3wMOgoHFqz9e1zhOvz79KQDascYaC6Aq3sbmqg/edit#

Ignore the part about activating with a 4 digit code. Zenminer no longer uses that method. They allow you to use your own Pi without an activation code.

I have talked with a gaw staff and wanted to write here , if anyone knows how to do it.

I own a prime hashlet , I would like to trade that with 2 zenhashlet miners , I would be willing to pay whatever the difference is , so like 4-5 dollars , that woudl be fine.

How can I go ahead and give my prime hashlet and get 2 zenhashlets instead?

Find someone to trade with & get their email/username on ZenCloud.

Open a ticket via ZenCloud support, and provide all details. Other party should also do the same. They will do transfer (don't know how long it will take).

the cloud seems to charge a lot for fee's, using boost or adding a "second" pool appears to do virtually nothing for your payouts.

Of the 0.0147 estimated daily payout, I end up with 0.0106 .... on a good day. usually less....

They should be graphing the total daily payouts and fees.

Second pool seem to work as intended by now. buggy on first few days, followed by 24 hours of 2nd pool activation for next couple days. This morning activated second pool and it finally started counting down on 12 hours. Payout increased by 50% too.

It will count down 12h twice, as double dip can only be used 1x every 24h.

I am beginning to wonder exactly how this service operates. Consistently I get payouts of a certain amount, then one day it drops to about 15% of what I usually get. Then it drops another 10% - then it increases to about 75% of the original. Are they trying to get us to buy more hashpower to increase payouts or is there a major bug in the system? Also, did anyone notice that once they started allowing members to sell their hashlets that there were a sh*tload of them for sale? Something is going on here and it doesn't smell right. Many other cloud mining services have payouts that deliver LITERALLY consistently without anyone even having a reason to question their system (i.e., PB Mining).

I am one of those people that believe that at the end of the day, GAW and Zen will be revealed as an extremely flawed system. For now - for myself - it has been a pain in the ass and a confusing system of cloud mining. I cannot rely on ANY percentage of payout no matter what I do. With the amount of money that should be invested to see a decent return, why can't they just deliver consistent payouts? How can you make $39 one day and the next day make $8 with NO change in owned hash rate? REALLY?

well those is a fact all days the income is different ,these for sure goes as the market worth i mean i suppose they mine altcoins as bitcoins soo they get revenue and share those as the total primes as total hashlets and give x% of the income, the crypto currencies worth all days changes soo  i suppose is why gaw is giving different incomes daily as bitcoin reach 300 dollars and can be lower

Hello everyone, newbie here!

Is anyone having issues with zenminer?

The other day i bought my first hashlet, from gaw miners, and am trying to get an account setup with zenminer.com.

So i set up an account, and i guess i was to receive a confirmation email, because every time i try to log on it says account is not confined.

I opened a support ticket 3 days ago, and have receive no response from them  I called them on the phone today, a recording told me to leave a message, which i did.  I sent an email today, again no response.

Not sure what to make of this all, am i assuming correctly that gawminer, and zenminer are one and the same?

If i can't get onto zenminer, how am i to use the hashlet i just purchased?

Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer.

Annoyed and a bit confused

Ernie

And this i find right on their website!....
"Unbeatable Customer Service & Support 24/7"  That may be so, but 3 days and no responses, really?!  That's what they call Unbeatable??? WOW, just WOW.  Should be more like unbelievable!

Ditch GAW and checkout either Genesis-Mining, Hashie.co, or LTCGear.  For LTCGear go  to litecointalk or ltcgeartalk to buy smaller shares.

If it was >7-8BTC, it will take them a while to verify.

Less than threshold, it usually shows up on the blockchain. However, this was for transfers around 2 weeks ago.

However, I expected more professionality from their part. I hope I won't have to write a ticket and wait several days after that.

Anyway, thanks for responding, @verloren. I hope everything will sort out quicker.

Yeah, anything over the limit has to go through their in house clearing.

Kinda like how there are limits to how much cash can be pulled out from an ATM at a time.

Finally received it, 32 hrs. total delay.
Anyone who has a 'bigger' amount of btc and wants to withdraw must take this into consideration.
Nonetheless, great guys, they replied very quickly to my ticket and explained the security measures they have for these withdrawals (multisig addresses etc).

Issue solved, nonetheless. :)

So i have my own miners 196 mh. I am in Ireland I pay 12 c for electric that is in euro. You pay 10 c in electric that is dollars. I have 200 ,h on zen and I paying 12 c in euro per kw make more money than than when you pay 10 c p/kw in dollars. I make on my miners 80% more than yours. So where does the 80% you take go to. So when I buy 200 mh of hashlets it costs me $2990.00 dollars . Out of that 200 MH you take 80% of my earnings. For 2990.00 dollars I bought l1 miners and I put a extra 300 dollars with an ordered 4. they pay me out 51 dollars a day my electric cost is 6 dollars a day. so lets do maths. 51.50 - 6 = $45 a day.

So all I can assume is you are a ponzi scheme. I have been banned 4 times from hashtalk from relaying this same idea. mmmm makes me think they dont want anyone to know.

I also writing because there anouncements say nothing about how they using that 80% percent for there purposes, But everything is about the new coin and what they are planning to do and how they going to change the world and on and on....but yet there is no discussion about the problem of payouts and why they have to take off 80% . looks like they trying to distract everyone from there issues. Joe speaks about 10 mil there and 10 mil here. Well €3900.00 of that 10 mil is my investment.yet this month so far I have made $300 dollars on that investment. which is €239.23 euro... HAHAHAHA. I wonder why People still listen to that crap.

Because most of the people left at GAW are people c that night in at the highest prices they are locked in and can't roi on the miners they bought so GAW convinced them to b give up mining BTC/LTC and mine a fake coin. So now GAW not only gets fees but the full hashing power of their mining. People there are desperate and well believe anything. It's all hope and wishful thinking.

If you are withdrawing large amounts then it naturally should take a long time as they will likely not send the TX from their hot wallet, but would rather either sent the TX from their cold wallet or will send more to their hot wallet the next time they "top off" their hot wallet.

I don't see why mining can't be an investing option. You're in essence trading electric energy for "a" currency. Which you could trade for another currency. It's a high risk investment, but I don't think a lot of people are mining because it's fun right now.

In miners ect.. Not sure that they'd be worth anything now.

Damn. I had about 20 dollars worth in zenminer. Does anyone have proof that they actually ran away with bitcoins? The market is still up and the website is still up so I'm hoping they will be back in business eventually.

Maybe. Bitcoin price will need to pump up above $300 again to be even close to viable for these companies (my opinion, based on some articles I read).

I feel sorry for those that sunk a lot of BTC into these cloud miners.

Zeushash is currently still making a very little bit of profit. They've offered 2 versions of cheaper contracts GHS II and GHS III. Unfortunately they haven't offered something for clients in GHS I to "upgrade". So ROI chances there look very weak.

I don't think so.. donated them my $150 this is my last straw for cloud mining. I have decided to take my chances in investing in btcjam or investing in dice sites.

Oh that sucks. What dice sites have you been investing in? I know there is just-dice, diggit.io, bitdice, and dadice but I haven't invested a lot of bitcoins in any of them. Which sites do you invest in that gives the most profit?

It's almost certain they won't return since they sold their miners and the person who was in charge of Zenminer left the company and is playing dumb, trying to distance himself from the project.

who left? josh?

You had no stuff there besides numbers on a website. Any coins you gave them were lost the second you sent them.
