When tested on the network, each antminer S5 shows three services.
What is this? The only other thing that shows services is the router.
Other miners (SP20, for example) do not show any services, so it is not the ethernet connection.
Can anybody confirm that they also see network services from S5 and what could they be?
perhaps some API functions relating to minerlink?

You should also change your MAX PSU to 288 or less, then try again. What power supply are you using?
+1. try lowered settings just so you can see if the unit is better if not pushed 100%

what else to expect from a plastic miner... Undecided

not sure why the sides being made of a good quality, lightweight plastic is a bad thing. Its better than the S1, and far lighter than the S3, but really needs a top cover.

the burnt component on that machine looks like a regulator for the control board - not sure for what, possibly the 5V power source of the Beaglebone.

It sure is a lot lighter than the S3 but I have a bad rattle coming from those sides.

a rattle? on mine the plastic was firmly scrwed down and only flexed 1cm or so in either direction - no movement under normal operation though.

Thank you for the suggestions!  will pass these on to the engineers.  (these changes unfortunately don't happen overnight tho...   Cry )
S5 firmware is being tested tonight, estimated to be online tomorrow or the following day.
will this address the PWM functions of the fan? Would be nice to see a way to manually set the fan, or at least to set a temperature target (at stock, temperatures seem to be targeting 50C or less - setting that to 55C or 60C would drastically reduce the fan speed/noise)

thanks Smiley The biggest competitive edge that the SP20 has is the ability to dial the fan speed back manually to as low as 20%, or 5% using SSH. makes a huge difference in noise and is usually the deciding factor for how far the owners are underclocking.

anyone have a S5 coupon of reasonable value? Seems Bitmain is being aggressive on price vs SP20

If bitmain had S6s or C2s, they'd be selling them
NO!

That will hurt the dumping of s4 and c1.
See s5! It was already in farms in november (or maybe earlier?) and left on 27dec!

Why sell s6 and keep s5? s6 will(i think they already have it...) be more power efficient and easier to handle than s5 Wink

It was already in farms in november? I don't recall seeing anything about that.

If they sell their S6 then they could get way more money for it. They would have the best equipment w/gh on the market, and they could charge quite the markup. Let's speculate for a second and say the S6 is 3TH/1000W. They could easily sell it for $1400 (1/2 of a SP35), or they could risk mining with it and worry about BTC price and difficulty...

Why mine with it when they could sell them risk-free for more money?

S3 units will still dump for anyone who focuses on the $/GH and not the w/GH

I suggest you read up on Bitfury. They've invest tens of millions of dollars on their next gen chip and datacenter improvements. They aren't going to grow slowly even if BTC is under $200.

+1. If home miners are being squeezed out at something like $350USD, Bitfury won't even feel the pinch at $200 or $150. SO much other hardware would drop off at that price point that only the guys with free power or power <$0.05/kwh will be able to operate, and those guys will be able to keep growing. If anything, a high USD/BTC creates decentralization as home mining becomes profitable when prices are high, and the race begins.

January 5th, 2015

Its hard not to point out that that is well over 1BTC/TH - a price that was considered competitive at only slightly lower efficiency over a month ago, and when bitcoin prices were almost 50% higher.

Definitely holding off on the hardware orders until price pops back over $400
1072  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What's the quietest, most power miner if you don't care about power efficiency on: January 05, 2015, 01:44:27 AM
IMO, if efficiency and size (not necessarily weight) are not a factor, I would ABSOLUTELY 100% reccomend the BTCGarden AM-V1 1.2TH miner.

it is quite large, about 5x the size of an antminer, but it uses 8 fans that run at very low speeds to provide airflow with almost no noise. Its about the same volume as the EVGA 1300 G2 powering it. (It needs about 1400W for 1200GH)
1073  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Spondoolies SP20E Jackson review by Starsoccer9 on: January 03, 2015, 06:03:56 PM
looks pretty much ideal. you could potentially squeeze another 20-30Gh from it if you went overboard on tweaking, but it would probably increase power draw by 30-40W doing so.

whats with your last loop being so much higher power usage than the 140W setpoint? Its not supposed to do that
1075  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Bitmain Antminer S5 - A wonderfully modable and well performing miner on: January 02, 2015, 05:58:00 PM
for the fan noise - try running the stock fan at 5V using one of these (or wire it yourself)
[img]http://www.moddiy.com/product_images/j/547/T1JRxJXglbXXce7cAT_011207__14471_zoom.jpg

5V is sufficient for running at 381.25MHz/1255GH/63C/58C when drawing in air thats about 5C. In the same conditions 7V is about 30% louder and brings the temps to 57C/53C.
for room temperaure intake, 5V probably isnt suitable for running above 350MHz
How much noise is reduced with 5V ? can this controller works?
http://www.dx.com/p/12w-speed-controller-for-heatsink-cooling-fan-dc-5-12v-171354#.VKbWK9KG95M
problem with your link is its a 1A controller, whereas the fan is likely 1.3A rated. So if you used that controller at 5V it would run slower than allowing the fan a full 1.3A at 5V

5V is about 1/3 as loud as 12V. The noise is similar to a microwave or a window-mount A/C - not silent but at least reasonable for a spare room or a corner of the living room.
1076  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Bitmain Antminer S5 - A wonderfully modable and well performing miner on: January 02, 2015, 05:54:56 PM
I did not see a voltage regulator (buck convertor). Are there any or has the design of the chip changed fundamentally?

its all in series now. 12V dived over 14 chips (plus some other components) results in about a 0.8V operating voltage (which is good for 0.5w/GH). 9v would provide about 0.6V/chip or 0.3w/GH
1077  Economy / Securities / Re: [ActiveMining] Official Shareholder Discussion Thread [Moderated] on: January 02, 2015, 05:52:16 PM
Does anyone know if the mining farm is still up and running, like is there a link to a real-time hash rate?
My guess is yes, and then no. Remember that Ken was running 737GH of avalon equipment since 2013, and virtually zero evidence or profits from this were passed on. The several TH of hashfast boards he was running were either liquidated or have been running this whole time, and I will not be surprised when the proof of what was done with them is either flimsy or reeks of fixing the books.
1078  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+OverClock Potential), 590W, Jan 12th Shipping [Sales Open] on: January 02, 2015, 05:34:33 PM
How does the current limiting on the PCIe plugs work, BTW? I'm not at home to check, but I would assume that the two plugs are not simply paralleled on the hashing board and that each 12V plug powers two of the ASICs in a loop.
IE, if you disabled a full loop on a hashing board you'd pull full power from one plug, and ~0W from the other.

Is that correct?

the sp20 seems to be 1 plug per loop.  so if you knock a plug loose on 1 board(each board has 2 loops)  the board only allows 1 loop to work.  this is good and it is safe.
I have knocked loose a pcie cable at the psu end and the sp20 just  ran 1 loop on that board.

problem is that the S5 will put about 270-320W per blade, so if you use two seperate cables thats a managable 150W/cable. If one fails, that 300W will push a cable to its limit. 16awg can handle that but an 18awg will certainly fail.

in comparison, the SP20 can draw up to 288W PER CABLE at full speed. (~150W/cable underclocked). Not much difference in safety as far as I see, if anything the SP20 is more likely to cause PSU failures (in lower quality supplies).

dont use a Bronze or lower PSU for either device, thats my suggestion. GOLD or PLAT power supplies will have better safety features and use thick wiring in its cables. Alternatively, I sell 16AWG PCIe cables that have either a connector on each end, or a connector at one end and stripped wires for server mods on the other. Ive used them to carry up to 312W each at which point they get warm but not hot
1079  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: January 02, 2015, 05:27:56 PM
What is the potential for damage by running these in an hot environment? Where I work, our server room is pretty damn hot. Right now I run my miners outside my home. Its summer in Australia and its pretty brutal. My miners see 35 - 40c days and hot nights.

Should I be concerned running something like an S5 in this environment?

I haven't seen any problems overclocking mine to 400M in a 40C room.

as long as temperatures dont read much higher than 60C youll be fine i think. fan might get pretty loud though
1080  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: January 02, 2015, 03:08:30 AM
good option. searching tech sites and amazon for things like 3pin molex / 5v fan molex / 4pin 5v fan, etc is a good way. Look for one with multiple 5V and/or 7V connections - ignore 12V since that's worse than the PWM. The above link has 2x5v and 2x12V - no 7V options unless you rewire it a little

In your opinion, will 5V support enough speed of the stock fan if intake is ~26C (78F) at least at 325, maybe 350 mhz setting?

All 7V adapters are expensive on amazon and since 7V is 30% louder than 5V, I am not sure that it will change the sound enough (I will experiment with 2 fans setup anyway, since they are coming already).
I know that you posted/tried 5V at 5C intake, which was OK. There is a cold spell right now, so I can theoretically open windows and close the door in the "mining" room, but I am looking at something more stable.

With the stock fan, 5V seems sufficient to get it spinning at a good speed, and creates significant airflow. I would suggest making a cover for the unit if too much air seems to escape upwards, as I feel like it improves air movement through the back half of the heatsink. (I used about 4 strips of clear packing tape)

at 26C intake and 5V i doubt youll achieve 350MHz. 325MHz is likely the limit. At 5C I can achieve 381.25MHz+, but at 15C running closer to 360MHz creates the same temperature readings.
