1081  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's the purpose Behind all the Mining? on: May 24, 2011, 08:06:12 PM
I mean from where the value is crated for these BitCoins? Cheesy
If all what is done is to generate some random data without any use then How the fck there can be any value to this money? Seems like it's just backed up by a promise to pay something and prices just goes up as there are more people who wants the coins?
Sounds exactly what's USD  Roll Eyes
Six minutes to browse through the wiki? Blimey, that's fast! Take it a bit slower, though - you missed the page barbarousrelic linked to that answered your question.
1082  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: [AUCTION] 5870 and 5970 on: May 24, 2011, 08:03:01 PM
Did you manage to find any cheap-ish way to ship it? I had a look at FedEx and it was eye-wateringly expensive. I may have to bow out, which is a shame as I thought your price was very reasonable. Have good news for me, please! Either way, best of luck with the auction!
1083  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Mt. Gox Market Manipulation Question on: May 24, 2011, 07:54:58 PM
from this link : http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/mtgoxUSD_depth.html

u can see clearly that someone (or more trying to manipulate the market )

but as i see it the more people will use it the harder it will be for those people
I just don't see it, sorry! I can see the twelve orders around 6.50 and 6.51 that I identified above, but I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary.
1084  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Mt. Gox Market Manipulation Question on: May 24, 2011, 07:48:03 PM
I'm looking at Bitcoin Charts, and see a huge spike of buy orders at 6.50 BTC
See http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/mtgoxUSD.html for realtime, or http://www.flickr.com/photos/63348656@N08/5755403189/ for a screen shot.

Seems unusual that someone would put in a public buy order for 7000 units at a price of 6.50.  That's $45,500.

To me, that looks fishy.
I recently read an article about stock market manipulators who buy a small amount of shares, and then put in a HUGE public Buy order below the market price, so that other potential buyers will see it, and think that there's major support at a certain price (and therefore, the price is less likely to go down below that, so it's a safer bet).  And then the public (i.e. the suckers) bid up the price, while the scammer sells out at a higher price (and then cancels the low buy order).

The theory that I am posing is that perhaps someone wants the price to go up, so they have put in a huge public buy order at 6.50 (which they never intend to execute) and maybe a dark sell order at 7.50 or so.

Do you think I am being too paranoid?  I know there are manipulators out there.

At the same time, I am very impressed with the generosity of the Bitcoin community, as a newbie.  Guess it's life.  There are the takers, and there are the givers.
In another thread, I posted my bitcoin address, because the faucet was broke and I am bitcoin-broke, and someone was kind enough to shoot me some coins!

It's gone down to 3902 now, though there's also 2825 at 6.51. However, that's spread out over twelve separate orders - hover over the 6.50 and the 6.51 and you can see the separate orders. It's still possible that all the orders were placed by the same individual (though that seems unlikely), or one individual is spreading their large orders between other users' small orders, I guess.
1085  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's the purpose Behind all the Mining? on: May 24, 2011, 07:31:08 PM
I mean.. there's some kind of calculating work done- but for what is it really being done?
What exactly is happening behind the scenes of all this calculating work being done?

Tried to search for what purpose all this stuff is done but can't seem to find!
Mining is ...a way of processing and verifying transactions. (The wiki is a good source in general - I'd recommend having a good browse through it).
1086  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Political Orientation on: May 24, 2011, 07:35:29 AM
I don't get it why there's Libertarian and Anarchist as different options. Libertarians are anarchists.... or by anarchist you mean the communist type?
Isn't it the other way round - anarchists are libertarians, but libertarians are not necessarily anarchists? (Libertarianism, as I understand it, includes anarchists and minarchists - those who want to abolish the state, and those who want to see a vastly reduced state).
1087  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: UK exchange: Britcoin on: May 23, 2011, 09:01:29 PM
Don't forget that banks don't process payments at weekends Cheesy

I'm painfully aware of this.  I decided to give them 3 working days too but they've not managed complete the transaction yet, *sigh*.  Can you imagine if the banks operated 24-7 and it was Bitcoin which closed down for evenings, weekends, and bank holidays?

I'm with smile.co.uk, and it took two working days - I asked britcoin to transfer me the money late one night, the next day britcoin confirmed the transaction, and I had the money in my account the following day. They are closed at weekends, however...!
1088  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The network just hit 40 PetaFLOPS! on: May 23, 2011, 08:18:02 PM
Why are you measuring hashes/s in FLOPS?
I assume it's because bitcoinwatch shows TeraFLOP/s (as well as Gigahashs/s).
What does that even mean?  There is no floating point in hashing.

It means exactly what I said: that bitcoinwatch displays TeraFLOP/s as well as Gigahashs/s. I have no idea why; you'd need to ask them.

1090  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do Bitcoins Disapear on: May 22, 2011, 05:22:06 PM
Hi

When I send a bitcoin does all of that coin's value travel 1 for 1 or does some of it get used by the system..

Thank you..
It retains its value - if I send you 1 bitcoin you will receive 1 bitcoin.

There are some exceptions, however. Take a look at this wiki page, but basically very small transactions incur a transaction fee (this is to prevent people "spamming" the network with lots of small transactions) and also you can voluntarily pay a transaction fee as it may make your transaction be processed faster.
1091  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mailing list? on: May 22, 2011, 03:12:49 PM
i know what NNTP is. the question was more like, what the fuck does this have to do with my question? i'm asking about a bitcoin discussion mailing list. that's obvious, isn't it?
Don't hold back now, tell us how you really feel.

I'm a wee bit old fashioned - I don't look at a statement like "Nigga what?" and think "ooh, that must mean what does NNTP have to do with a question about mailing lists?" I guess I'm just not hip to the lingo you young 'uns are using, so the obvious-ity whooshed by me.

Back to the topic at hand, you'd need to ask Basiley, who kindly addressed your question. I'd imagine it's due to the remarkable similarities between mailing lists and usenet - both are readable in email clients - and the advantages many people would perceive usenet having over mailing lists.
1092  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mailing list? on: May 22, 2011, 03:00:56 PM
Nigga what?
NNTP? Wikipedia has the answers. It's what we used before the Web became "The Internet".
1093  Economy / Economics / Re: Anarcho-capitalism, Monopolies, Private dictatorships on: May 22, 2011, 01:53:30 PM
Please don't conflate "anarcho"-capitalism with anarchism.

If you'd like to learn about anarchism, even for the sake of improving your arguments, I'd recommend An Anarchist FAQ.

To smash private property, you need a state. Capitalism, on the other hand, exists independent of the state. Given what happened in Spain, where the first thing the so-called "anarchists" did was set up a police force with exclusive privileges to use violence, nobody buys the socialist "anarchist" line anymore.
Off topic, but I'd be interested to learn more about this police force because it's not something I've previously heard about. I know that the Generalidad de Cataluna (the Trotskyist and Communist government in Barcelona, which the anarchists broadly supported) maintained the Civil Guard, and that after the PSUC (Communists) gained increasing power just before the 1937 May Days they brought in Assault Guards (to suppress first the Trotskyist POUM, and then the anarchist CNT/FAI), but so far as I know the only police were government police. And all of the militias - from CNT/FAI and POUM militias though to the International Brigades and other Communist militias - they all were armed, they all had the right to use force, so I'm not sure I understand "exclusive privileges to use violence" - the Spanish Republic was in the midst of a civil war against Fascism - the Republic in general, and the Generalidad in particular, all condoned widespread arming of the population.
1094  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: WTS Saphire 6990 on: May 21, 2011, 02:36:24 PM
caveat emptor
no idea what that is supposed to mean..
If only there was some sort of electronic "network" of information portals we could utilise to answer questions like this! ;-)

You've only made a few posts here, all in this thread. That's fair enough - we were all newbies once - but it doesn't give anyone any reason to trust you, and we've seen a few scammers here. This isn't necessarily a problem for you trying to sell your card - all you need to do is allow the purchaser to use an escrow system like ClearCoin - they place their bitcoins in excrow, and wait until they receive the card from you before releasing the coins. That gives them confidence that you're not a scammer, and it gives you confidence - because you can see that they've put the bitcoins in escrow, and if they renege on the deal they'll lose the coins.
1095  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: Spring cleaning sale! on: May 21, 2011, 01:58:08 PM
Hi everyone!
Hi Garrett!

I'm cleaning out my room/parts closet, and will be adding things for sale here as they are discovered/tested.

First up- Video cards!

5870 with aftermarket cooler, brand new (cooler is, not the card). 37 btc shipped
I'd be interested in this. Price seems reasonable, but I'm in the UK - I'm assuming you're not, and that shipping will cost more. I'd be happy to pay more to cover the additional shipping cost, assuming you can find a reasonably priced shipping firm. If you're interested, we can discuss here or via PM.

Incidentally, and someone has - I think - asked this above, what's the reason for the spring-clean? Upgrading?
1096  Other / Meta / Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Changes to the forums on: May 17, 2011, 09:18:38 PM
you mean the default SMF theme that has been around for years?
Check out quotes, e.g. here (or, indeed, directly above!) Might be the default SMF theme, but it's different to how it was before the recent changes.
1097  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proposed Bitcoin Nomenclature on: May 15, 2011, 05:52:49 PM
SI units make the most sense to me. However...

This is a perennial topic (there's an open thread on this very issue right now, and it certainly isn't the first time it's been discussed). I draw two conclusions from this...

Firstly, people are - naturally - going to come up with their own systems. I've said before that there's a world of difference between someone buying an online postage stamp in Germany (micro-transaction) and a group in Somalia buying a boat from another group. Leaving aside the guns the Somalian pirates have to enforce the transaction (I have a vivid imagination!), there will be differences due to both culture and the size of the transactions (and possibly more that I've not even considered).

Secondly, and leading on from the first, I'm very wary of coming up with some "official" or semi-official system. I'd be hesitant, for example, to update the wiki to include any system developed on this forum. People are going to develop their own systems, and we shouldn't get in the way of that, or create any barriers to their understanding of bitcoin.

bobR parody? (If so, it needs less punctuation and more capital letters - and the spelling was far too good.)

1099  Economy / Economics / Re: please stop sating bubble unless you define/understand it on: May 15, 2011, 04:16:03 PM
I'm not sure that's a bad thing, but perhaps shift it a little bit to favor early adopters, but not by as much as the current system.  It surely seems intentional, as only a very few number of people were likely involved initially, and they could get a huge number of coins.  This was almost a reward for writing the system (not that it's a bad thing).
I'd love to have Satoshi's input on this (as with so many things...) I suspect the "front-loaded" approach was deliberate, and - as you say - to reward Satoshi and other early adopters (I think I've seen somewhere that Satoshi didn't benefit as much as others: Satoshi was mining with a fairly low-spec CPU). I also think that that's no bad thing: I think it was probably necessary to bootstrap bitcoin.

I did consider a bell-shaped distribution when replying earlier; I hadn't thought about Poisson however. Your idea intrigues me and I wish to subscribe to your journal :-) I suspect it may have resulted in a stable system becoming unstable, then ultimately stabilising again, so I'm still tending towards a Candide-esque "this is the best of all possible systems" belief. But I'll have a further think before discounting a Poisson distribution approach.
