12hr average at eligius is between 1.23-1.25TH, miner has a fairly cool intake and a top shroud made of packing tape.

1082  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: January 02, 2015, 02:57:18 AM
It seems to be up and running again after letting it cool off a bit. I am curious to know what the green blinking LED on the PSU means, though.

>> AC PRESENT, STBY ON, MAIN OUTPUT OFF

see page 4.

what almost certainly happened is the SP30 pushed the PSU just a tad too far and tripped the protection circuit. When that happens some power supplies need to be unplugged and left to cool for a few minutes before they can boot again

i have updated my review of the S5.
it can be read here:

http://rgsneddon.thescribe.eu/#post117

It now seems to me, evident why the S5 is an open unit.
It is my presumption that due to the string design, the S5 struggles to cool properly.

Quote
Update 01 January 2015
I have decided to downclock the S5 on account of my discomfort in the temperature of the unit. It is located away from my home in a garage and whereas in the daytime, I am able to leave the garage door open, I cannot do this at night.
The reason I am uncomfortable with the temperature is that when I checked in on the miner remotely this morning, temps had gotten to 80+ degrees - although the miner was still hashing at advertised rate, I was glad to be able to have the door opened. Tonight I have underclocked the unit to a frequency of 218.75 and it's doing ~750GH/s with temps at or around 50 degrees celcius. I do not have a meter to allow me to measure the wattage but will presume it's being quite efficient and also will stay at a sensible temperature overnight in a closed space.

updated synopsis...
Q. would i recommend this miner?
A. I would recommend this miner only if the price is relative to a hashrate of 750GH/s

ADD: I would not run this unit at stock settings in my home - there is something about those plastic sides which make me a little apprehensive and feel this the S5 is only a few degrees away from giving out flames.

ADD 2: all three of my SP20's (underclocked) were at 30degrees in and 57degrees out this morning. I have no fear about the safety of these.

ADD3: my SP31 was also perfectly fine temperature-wise and this is not an underclocked unit
not sure i would agree. The temperatures on my unit are just fine, and Im not really concerned at all with the heat of the unit. I run the fan on 5V and aim to have the board temperatures averaging around 60C. With a nearby window cracked slightly an intake of 5C allows me to overclock to 381.25MHz/1255GH without tripping my 612.5W PSU rail (fan is on a 5V rail so that frees up 12W+ for mining). With room-temperature (~20C) intake I have to operate at or slightly under the stock 350MHz.

The plastic sides would likely not deform until a minimum of 100C, and actual melting temp has to be well over 150C, or the temperature that the antminer shuts itself off or would otherwise be failing massively (which nobody has experienced yet).

keep in mind that the SP20 temperature is more air temperature than the board. Asic stats show that the chips are 85C underclocked or up to 125C in normal operation. Antminer chips go into the 75-95C range I believe, and the sensors on it are likely in contact with the hot side of the heatsink. 55-60C is an ideal temperature for the S5, above 65C may spell trouble

that said, 80C is very high, is your garage warm? I found that if you put a cover on the unit air crosses the heatsink instead of blowing out the top around the beaglebone.

@phil - yep sp20 end, #3 loop.  but all look slightly toasted. and it wasnt OCd at all, been running fine since arrival.

still confused, but jet-lagged so cant think straight

@ epoch - from what i was told, flashing green = searching for IP/connection. usually lasts a few seconds (check ether cable?)
Perhaps your cable wasnt fully snug, little bit of a gap increasing resistance or w/e. Its a lot of power for a single connector so youve gotta make sure the wiring is thick and secure.
depending how badlyt melted the socket is you can probably dig it out with a small-bladed flat-tip or melt it away with a soldering tip. (alternatively, spondoolies might RMA it for you - depends whether its just damage on the connector or if the PCB is also damaged in any way)

@phil - not sure why your loop would be allowing itself to draw 160W+ when you have a limit set for 140W. is your FW up to date? Otherwise, re-enter and re-save your settings in case the issue is there. At 140W limit the device is supposed to settle in at 135W once its stable.

@epoch. edgar is talking about either the front led or the SP20. If there is a blinking light on an SP3X PSU it means the supply tripped on overvoltage/current. Unplug the entire SP30 for about 10 minutes and then plug it back it. That should reset the PSU, and if the issue persists you might be looking at RMA through spondoolies

good option. searching tech sites and amazon for things like 3pin molex / 5v fan molex / 4pin 5v fan, etc is a good way. Look for one with multiple 5V and/or 7V connections - ignore 12V since that's worse than the PWM. The above link has 2x5v and 2x12V - no 7V options unless you rewire it a little
1086  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Bitmain Antminer S5 - A wonderfully modable and well performing miner on: January 01, 2015, 09:29:50 PM
for the fan noise - try running the stock fan at 5V using one of these (or wire it yourself)
>snip image<

5V is sufficient for running at 381.25MHz/1255GH/63C/58C when drawing in air thats about 5C. In the same conditions 7V is about 30% louder and brings the temps to 57C/53C.
for room temperaure intake, 5V probably isnt suitable for running above 350MHz

do you have this product link as there are 12 pages related to molex
awesome site!
thanks
no clue on a product link, but im sure ebay/google/amazon/newegg would have some viable options. Alternatively you can rewire any old molex adapter if you're half-decent with tinkering, just GND to GND and 12V to 5V

the newegg one could operate multiple fans. Im sure cheaper options are available, maybe even at a local outlet

And "industrial" electricity rates... Huh

Yes  Grin

bloody hell, two power plugs in the top machine? wow.

Haha I believe that is the SP35... 3.6Kw+ of power draw... two plugs are absolutely necessary

it's SP31, which is minimally more efficient than SP35

Yes, SP31 have more efficient than SP35. And Double PSU solution are in all YUKON SP3x devices.
Its brilliant because when one PSU goes down second will work and half of device will still hashing Smiley

only difference between the SP31 and SP35 is the PSUs. The SP35 has about 600W more available to it, which it uses to achieve about 600GH more. The SP31 is like running 4x SP20 units at 1.2TH, while the SP35 is like 4x1.35TH

it moves a ton of air (150 cfm or more)    but runs at 3600 to 3800 rpm.  it is fine in a garage not attached. or I guess use a speed controller on it.

push noctua is 2700 rpm pull silverstone is 1900 rpm -  not quite cool as I would like. considering I am letting outside air at -5c into the room via the window,  but 381 freq is giving 1250 gh at 621 watts plus powering the 2 fans. Sound is really good. cost is too high 24 + 16 = 40 and it went up  to 24+20 = 44

HW's are decent.  Would I run this setup 24/7/365  yeah if I was running 1 or 2 s-5's   but if I had 20 or 30 no.  I think I am just a bit too hot see below.

>snip image<

One point-stock fan does not move that much air comparing with SP20 at a low 30 setting. The choice of the fan clearly was not right, since the S5 fan even at 325 (hashing at 1070gh) is MUCH louder than the SP20 fan is at setting 30 (hashing at 1360Gh).
Very much looking forward to see how Noctua-Noctua (expensive at ~$48) or Noctua-Delta ($32) fan combos will work.

honestly, just try powering the stock fan at 5V. molex adapters are cheap and you likely have a few lying around if you bought fans in the past. at 5V the fan is about the same volume as the SP20 at 10-20%, and is sufficient to keep the machine cool at stock speeds (as long as its under ~65C, 55-60C is ideal)
1090  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: January 01, 2015, 06:32:53 PM
The smoke was electronic smoke, It was making the air very toxic and there was no way for me to photographic it. Perhaps if I bought the unit outside and did it. The smoke smelled so bad, I really couldn't describe it, not only was it electronic smell, it was sort of like a regular fire smell as well. Nothing wrong with the power supply G2 1300W EVGA with 10 year warranty. It is working fine now with other miners right now. I didn't take the entire thing apart either, the other side of the board is probably black, but I didn't want to spend more time on this. I shipped them back expecting new units, but I was told they would not accept a return and send me a new unit.

For those about compairing Bitmaintech to spondoolies. This is my DOA unit and not only does bitmain refuse to accept a return or refund me, but they continue to say it was something I did with my power. Mind you smoke was pouring out of this unit, and would have started a fire, but luckily I as in the room at the time it started.  I had 2 DOA units, and I tried to return both within DAYS. Here is one for your collection. The 2nd DOA miner just made a spark when plugged in, nothing else.

http://s1318.photobucket.com/user/parkstreet1234/media/20141229_215515_zps22803daf.jpg.html

If smoke was "pouring" out of the unit why is there no evidence of fire or smoke in this photo? Last week my PSU did just that. It had an electrical fire and I smelled smoke. When I turned it off and took off the plug there was clear evidence of fire and smoke. I see none in this photo.

seems strange that there would be smoke without fire. As was said, usually smoke or a bad smell can be tracked to a leaking component (maybe this cap) and usually stains or blackened spots/shorts visible where they occurred. keep on bitmain, they should RMA for you, though seems strange you got two DOA units together
1091  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: January 01, 2015, 01:37:48 AM
Anybody know where to download SP20 firmware?  It shows in the gui that you can update from file.  After going down to 2.5.12 and now my machine thinks its a Dawson, I would like to reload the correct firmware.  You don't get those options after installing the 2.5.12.

I found the tech blog and how to create a recovery sd.  Except after doing it, noticed it was a micro SD slot.  Had to head home, so was hoping I could just load a correct firmware version from file since I can do that remotely.  Haven't been able to locate their firmware files on their website or github yet.

Thanks.

one of the webGIU pages is 'firmware update' or similar. press the automatic button and it should be rebooted on the new FW within a few minutes
1092  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Bitmain Antminer S5 - A wonderfully modable and well performing miner on: January 01, 2015, 01:28:25 AM
The SP20 design is ideal since it can stack in any direction as all ports are on the front, and the unit is a long 120mm tube. By replicating the S1/S3 board design Bitmain has somewhat limited themselves, and ideally the next revision will include a 4" PCIe extension to allow plugging power in the front side.

as for noise, try the stock fan at 5V. it pushes a lot of air but becomes reasonable volume (still quite loud though)
1093  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dec 29 to Approx Jan 12th diff thread (4%) to (7%) on: January 01, 2015, 12:44:06 AM
my guess is 7-8%. lots of hardware turning on in the next 3-4 days, likely followed by a lull and the removal of most gear over 1.2w/GH
1094  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S5 review on: December 31, 2014, 11:54:07 PM
15A circuit, 1300W PSU, 2 miners living in perfect harmony:

Ebony (Overclocked S5): 1240 GH/s
Ivory (Underclocked SP20): 1140 GH/s

Each miner is drawing 700 W (+/- 2%) at the wall.

ha ha, I have almost exactly the same setup for a pair and a similar thought  Grin.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=902305.msg9993723#msg9993723
Once I get quiet S5 fans-will do a second pair, otherwise it would cause some stress during the NY holidays.

for the S5 fans, try driving them at 5V if its cold intake, or 7V if you want to overclock. One of these http://www.moddiy.com/product_images/j/547/T1JRxJXglbXXce7cAT_011207__14471_zoom.jpg will work, or makeshift your own (its just a few watts). The PWM revving to 80-100% is terribly loud.

as for the SP20 - you should be able to drive it a bit higher, to 1200Gh or so, by setting each PCIe to 155W and the voltage range to 0.638-0.655. Should settle in around 1200GH/0.646V and draw about equal to the S1 (this is with fans way down, which might free up 5-10W)
1095  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+Over Clock Potential), 590W, Jan 8th Shipping [Sales Open] on: December 31, 2014, 11:48:42 PM
It saves an alarming amount of weight by opening up the top and bottom, as well as replacing out the metallic sides. The S5 is a total lightweight compared to the S3. And that means less steel being shipped round the world.
Replacing out the metalic cover with a plastic /perspex one sure saves weight, but how much weight would a plastic / perspex top and bottom add to the overall weight of the S5? (rhetorical question so you don't have to answer 'cause I know it is insignificant)
+1. while a bottom isnt really necessary (but whats $1 of plastic that weighs 60g?) a top would definitely improve airflow. Ive seen an improvement in temperatures but putting a few clear strips of tape over the top to improve the wind tunneling, and a top cover is only $2 or less of sheet plastic like the sides. huge improvement over the tanky S3
1096  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: December 31, 2014, 09:06:57 PM
Weve ordered 24 of these, should be here next week.

Phillip, a tremendous thanks for all the insight and noise fixes. Much appreciated.

Im assuming yes, but I take it there would be no issues running (2) of these off a single EVGA 1300G2 PSU?

Were adding this to our S3+ Farm, and we have a bunch of extra 1300s we'd like to put to use.

Next week, 80 T/Hash up and running! Smiley

Strato

you can but the cables need to placed correctly  .

Hey Phillip,

Could you elaborate a bit?  Obviously we would run 4 x cables to each unit, and the split pairs running I assume to the same side of a single miner?

Just want to make sure we dont burn the server room down. Wink

Strato

The 1300 would get pretty maxed out by any overclocking, but I can do 375MHz on a CS650M, which is a 612W rail. If your PSU doesnt have 8 discinct wires, be careful with how much load goes down a single wire. a 2-headed cable might get hot if it powers a single board (280-300W draw). using a 16awg or better splitter is likely better than using only 1 socket on a blade as it distributes the input amperage better.
1097  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: An Antminer S5 review by klondike_bar; the loud, affordable miner on: December 31, 2014, 08:03:09 PM
Im measuring at the PSU, not at the wall. and by measure, I only know what the SP20 tells me (i set it to 150W/cable) and whether the PSU trips (612.5W 12V rail, seems to trip at 625W+). Right now the SP20 is at 10% fan, 18/52/47 temps, and 1.195TH. noise is about the same as my S5 at 5V fan power, 56/62 temps, and 1.23TH

update: pushed the Sp20 to 8% fan and 155W per connector. PSU seems steady so far and volume is about the same as the S5. 50/55C exhaust on it with 1.21TH. Both peices of hardware are excellent and capable of similar specs when running at 1.2TH

I'm going to tune both S5 and SP20 to 700 watts each, and see what performance they get.
at the wall? Im guessing that would be 1.22-1.32Th on the SP20 and 1.25-1.35TH on the S5, thouh the S5 seems to max out on 12V at about 412.5MHz (~1.32TH)
1098  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: December 31, 2014, 07:16:27 PM
Hi i'm new on this. I have a real interest to bring a couple of S5 home but i have a concern about the no ķes issue. I have read the thread and see that it's possible to reduce the noise lowering the fan volts or changing the fan but i don't now so much about cooling systems.

So can i get any recomendation? I plan to put it in my living room and i my home temp is about 20c whole year, Thank you!

The PWM configuration of the S5 is not good for home use, but if you have a molex-3/4pin adapter that can provide 5V or 7V, it becomes managable.
The SP20 is a similar volume when set to similar specs, but has room to run much faster if you are okay with noise, or slower if you want better efficiency.

Its a close call, and I think the deciding factor is price. AT $500 w/ shipping the SP20 groupbuy is a better deal, but the 3/$1900 pack (~$630 each) loses to the S5.
1099  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: An Antminer S5 review by klondike_bar; the loud, affordable miner on: December 31, 2014, 06:23:34 PM
The SP20 is about the same volume at ~10% fan speed and can drive about 1.25TH/600W in the same ambient settings.

I dont have a killawatt

I haven't seen anyone get the SP20 that good. It's more like 650-700 watts for 1.2 TH/s.

1100  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: An Antminer S5 review by klondike_bar; the loud, affordable miner on: December 31, 2014, 06:11:12 PM
The S5 can be very managable if the fan is driven at 5V, and can still push 1.2TH at about 600W. This causes temperatures around 56-62C, with 5C intake air and a makeshift top shroud of packing tape.

The SP20 is about the same volume at ~10% fan speed and can drive about 1.25TH/600W in the same ambient settings.

I dont have a killawatt, but I know neither is tripping my CS650M GOLD supplies (they trip at about 625W+ on 12V) (The S5 tripped it at 400MHz, or about 640W)

If I had to choose a winner, it would be the SP20. But with pricing considered they are about equal - I think bitmain could revisit the drawing board and come back with a quieter model that has a top shroud and is a cheaper than the SP20
