1081  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [TEK] TEKcoin 40%+ SuperStake in 30+ days on: August 23, 2014, 02:35:21 PM
Richlist
While richlist is cool to see where you rank vs others, why do any of us NEED it?
I just don't seen the big deal if it even exists.
It is not about being useful (we all know richlists are manipulated). It is about being request and increasing confidence - who said humans are rational?. A case of "useless but necessary".

Min stake size
Just wondering what do you guys recommend as minimum stack size of coins ?
Since TEK has no max_subsidy unlike CAP or HYP, there is no economical reason to have a particular stack size. I suggest you to keep them al together, you'll stake faster.
If one day TEK implements max_subsidy, then a maximum stack size would make sense (but a minimum size would still not).

presstab, tranz, correct me if I'm wrong.

Updating wallet
How do I get the wallet updated?

Step by step instruction please.
For Linux, installation is just one line of code:
Quote
mkdir -p ~/cryptos && cd ~/cryptos && rm -rf TEK && git clone git://github.com/maxxine/TEK && cd TEK && qmake-qt5 tekcoin-qt.pro && make && ln -s ~/cryptos/TEK/tekcoin-qt ~/Desktop/TEK
&& ln -s ~/cryptos/TEK/tekcoin-qt ~/Desktop/TEK is only if you want to create a shortcut on your Desktop

Still for Linux, updating should be just one line of code too:
Quote
cd ~/cryptos/TEK && git pull && qmake-qt5 tekcoin-qt.pro && make
1082  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero (XMR) Speculation thread on: August 21, 2014, 10:43:05 PM
Hi folks!

I got sick of all the altcoin pump and dumps around and dismissed all altcoins for 6 months and focused on BTC. But now i feel/see an increasing demand in alts with anonymity as a key feature.

I am sure you have done a lot more reading / researching on this matter.

What makes monero stand out in comparison to other alts like DRK for example?
Q: Prove me that Monero is not yet-another-shitcoin is a start.

Suppose Monero (or a different alt) were to gain enough traction for it to appear inevitable that it would eventually topple bitcoin. How feasible would it be to fork bitcoin to adopt some or all features of Monero? iow, a merger of the first mover advantage of bitcoin with the technical advantages of Monero. I suppose this question has two parts: 1) What would be the technical feasibility of doing this? and 2) Would the community go along?
Damn hard. Ring signature is a beast. Plus, this is not only the technology that must be considered - the human part (involvement/activity/culture of innovation/resistance to inertia) also matters.

Being in the frontline (I am a Monero core team member), I can confidently say that Monero is increasingly becoming more than a special feature (the ring sigs or other).

Hasn't AnonyMint proved that Monero is not truly anonymous, certainly not to a "killer attribute" level? I've seen him tear it apart in a thread on here, and stayed away for that reason.
There is a reason why we use the tagline "secure, private, untraceable". Anonymity is an absolute and we don't live in an absolute universe. Plus, viewkey allows some people of your choosing to know your balance (e.g. public companies, donations...)

Tell us more about Monero, please. I already got 3-4 times more XMR than BTC (in units, not in actual value), and would like to understand it better. Seems awesome on the surface, but will it ever grow beyond the current state? I am willing to risk a bit more on it, as it sounds quite appealing.
Synchronous communication: #monero (or #monero-dev if you are technically minded.
Asynchronous communication: r/Monero (because commands may be upvoted. And later our own website. As well as the Monero Community FAQ.

I am also writing a Monero Handbook which will cater for three audiences (general public, crypto-enthusiasts, dev). I won't be published in the next weeks, but any question you'd ask could help me make ist better fulfill its goal.

Thank you ArcticMine for your post. Anyone curious about Monero, read his post.

^ Agreed that Bitcoin is the way out. But again, this is another in a long train of technologies that have made everyone's lives better. It's just that now we're getting into the really huge ones. Bitcoin, prediction markets, decentralized everything...then in a short while the pace of new tech becomes impossible to comprehend, let alone predict.

aka Technological Singularity?

If you come to Malla, you will have the opportuntity to speak with a board member of the French Transhumanist Association and the International Longevity Alliance. I anticipate great discussions!
1086  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Monero's elevator's speech - Planting the seed on: August 21, 2014, 12:38:52 AM
An elevator’s speech is a short statement that is meant to to grab someone’s attention is a short amount of time — for instance, when you’re in an elevator with someone who may be leaving at next floor.

The focus is not on exhaustivity or even complete correctness — shortcuts can be taken. The point is that the person must remember Monero when you leave. If the person asks a question, bingo! but this is not even required. Planting the seed is.

So go on, don’t be shy, edit. Remember an elevator’s speech must grab attention fast. It is longer than a tagline, but also more informational. Share your thought, nothing is wrong for the moment, just post your ideas, we’ll sort them out later!

rich list down yet again, bit embarassing really don't ya think!
???why is that embarassing.the guys are working hard on the wallet and will get richlist back up when they can.

The rich list is awesome. I am not directly involved with the richlist, though we all should support it with donations, and offers to help them if they need it.

Embarrassing? No, not at all. Things happen.
I disagree on this one. I am the one who most of the time contacted Unick to have the richlist back online. It happened way too often, my indicators tell me it WILL happen again. So, as nice Unick may be (and he is, I experienced first hand), we have to call the richlist a fail and find an alternative (yes, I know we paid for this richlist).
1089  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: August 19, 2014, 04:17:36 AM
I prefer address and addressbook over account number and favourites.

Reasonning:
  • Account reminds of banking but this may be either bad (for bank haters) or good (because bank conjures something familiar). So all in all, this is a neutral argument that I only include for the sake of completeness.
  • Account reminds of centralisation, as already mentioned.
  • Addressbook is a holonym of address (or the other way around, address is a meronym of addressbook). By contrast, the semantic relation between "account number" and "favourite" is much more vague and so less self-sufficient. Favourites is ambiguous. Favourite pages, favourites features (shortcuts), favourite accounts (obviously the last one but at first sight, not so much).

Why monero.cc website is offline.
Works for me.
The website was offline 18 minutes.
1092  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: August 17, 2014, 11:45:46 AM
Regarding the renaming of wallets to accounts, going against the grain here is probably going to do more harm than good. All of Bitcoins advertising (terms) is basically industry standard, not to mention Paypal using the term wallet as well. I strongly suggest against rebranding the term to account.
What fluffy said, plus remember the MRO => XMR rebranding? Went even easier than we expected.
1093  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: August 17, 2014, 09:49:45 AM
Adding to that, I created #monero-ger for all persons capable of speaking german.
#monero-de would make more sense. Principle of least astonishment, ISO 639.

I also choosed the name after the ISO standard, to be exact: 639-2/B. When you look on the international floor , then you see they use exactly this standard: ENG, FRE, SPA, CHI and so one and so forth. Also most german chatrooms or subforums, etc, use -ger, when the plattform, they use, is used internationally
So I will change #monero-fr to monero-fra.
1094  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blowing the lid off the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scam (with the exception of Monero) on: August 16, 2014, 03:23:19 PM
Oh, sorry, my hypothesis is this:

The Cryptonote people designed the crypto
And why if they did NOT designed the algo, but "obtained" it from someone else? Think about the behaviour of the Bytecoin and CryptoNote team. Granded, you can be a genius and a bastard all at the same time, but being genius-only or bastard-only is more common. I let you extrapolate on this.

There is a future for this coin and the bigger the community gets, the more dedicated it becomes, the brighter the future of GRW will be Smiley

I know I have a lot of ideas, my biggest issue is time right now! but I will keep contributing to the development of this coin in multiple ways. right now my focus is sill on a few feature I want to add to the coin (leveldb, multiple wallet) and fixing issues as they arise.
I highly suggest you cross-fertilization with HyperStake, so that both coins can implement the ideas of one another and focus on the differences between the two, ideally differences that would not result in a "you or me" fight.

By the way, a fun things, double minting at the same time. First time it happened to me, twice (the first one is just faucet arriving at the exact same time as GRW minting). For the pleasure of the eyes.

1097  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][HYP] HyperStake | Proof of Stake | 750% Annual | Coin-Swap & AllCoin on: August 15, 2014, 01:53:44 AM
We have a proposal for a very nice richlist.
I forgot to mention than the said very nice richlist is the Advanced ABE used for NOBL.

https://chainz.cryptoid.info/nobl/

Think of staking, as mining. Your coins age is your hashing power. You miners do not work until your coins are 9 days old. After 9 days your miners will turn on. But, since it is mining, there is still luck involved and you might have to wait a few days with your wallet on to get your stake.
I like this analogy, one of the best I found to explain the stacking part of PoS.

By the way, a fun things, double minting at the same time. First time it happened to me, twice (the first one is just faucet arriving at the exact same time as GRW minting). For the pleasure of the eyes.

As David said we need to find a dev to fix the issue otherwise say buh-bye to TEK

David do you know anyone might be interested in looking at TEK and fix it we can also use some wallet updates like adding coin weight arrow at the bottom of the wallet to show an estimate on when to expect a stake and unlock wallet within the GUI
Sorry ryanb or not having replied earlier.

- Increasing difficulty will eventually limit POS rewards.
No, because the code is broken, NVCS should have already kicked in but it had not.
Hopefully, the bug that stopped the stalking to happen will be an opportunity to fix this too.

- If all else fails, the code can be adjusted to compensate.
This would need a constant dev for TEK. The coin can't just have an interim dev. I'd be OK to send a percentage of my monthly stake to the said dev.
This dev should not have much to do, on top of it: as I mentioned before, presstab is doing a fantastic job on HyperStake and the TEK dev should just have to import the code (since the code are different, it would still need some work). Also add stakeforcharity with auto-start (hyperstake doesn't autostart yet), so that the donation to the said dev could be automated.

Also, we should vote for another exchange. I'm pissed of allcoin.com just stopped the vote, whilst we were at the top. Coin-swap accepted HYP so it means they are OK with high-pos. If we pay 0.2 BTC, TEK will be added in 48 hrs (1 btc for immediate addition, I do not recommend it). https://coin-swap.net/newcoin and https://coin-swap.net/newcoin/form

I'm willing to setup a wallet for this bounty (a bit more than 1000 TEK are necessary if they are sold slowly enough), but I'd prefer someone else to handle it if possible, I'm running short of time. Anyway, if no one wants, here is the address:

Welcome to the new monero mining pool, the first pool with IP filtration http://moneropool-ip.com
Pool announcements are forbidden by new bitcointalk.org rules.

You can post on #monero-pools but not here anymore.

Also, for something completely different:
I created #monero-fr. This is intented for French-speaking users who have a hard time writing or even reading the English IRC chans. This is not meant to divide the community so if you read and write English well enough to participate on the usual IRC channels, please continue to do so (you can also come to -fr, but this is complementary, not as a replacement).

I encourage other non-native English speakers to create a channel for their language too, with the same caveat as for FR.
