781  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: October 19, 2014, 08:12:05 PM
forum.monero.cc won't allow me to login, due to inactivity.  it would be nice to have a contact link on the front page.
Due to inactivity? Is is about the Web of Trust part? If yes then you can just skip it entirely (and complete it later)
782  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Claiming my NEM on: October 19, 2014, 06:42:04 PM
I just read the sixth newsletter, telling me I have only 18 days to get my NEM and I still dont understand much how to do it. So, I start to panick

1. I do not have my stake on NXT. I just paid in February
2. According to this page I must first receive my token then register for stake at https://chain.nem.ninja/stakes
3. My question is: how to I get my token?

Thank you.
David, concerned

There is no need for payment id. The txid shall be sent to Earl David (nick here: "David Latapie") for confirmation.
Technical notes:
Because of a well-known limitation in Simple Machine Forum, the above address cannot be copy-pasted easily. Please paste the one below:
Code:
4B8suUor7am45MUc7pH3EZeH2UumpWFYHhnHkLvffgsLCY3PF1ShEF3dnGQ615Nq4RBk9M4JKyeRS1E5jCm23gytJ5R1Xe6

I would still prefer to have a payment_ID. Why? Because anyone could pretend to have donated whilst it is not true. The payment ID is the proof that you did it Smiley And to make it completely secure, I will be the one providing the payment ID (otherwise, you could just copy someone else's payment ID - if you pretend to have donated as much, I would not notice the difference.
So, buying is done that way:
1. You announce how much gold you want/how much XMR you want to spend
2. I privately send you a payment ID
3. You notify me once you sent
4. I check the transaction
5. I notify His Majesty the King, who will credit the gold on your account.

Candidates who already contacted me are exempted from this process.

785  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: United we stand, divided we fall - the coming rise of cryptofiat on: October 19, 2014, 04:44:22 AM
The vast majority do not understand what money is.
Quote
Money is the actualization of a protocol governing the communication of financial transactions between individuals. It is merely an invention of early man to enable him to store his value (labour) in an inanimate portable un-perishable divisible fungible unit of account that originates in the free market and is sought after by other individuals due to its scarcity, so that he may be able to exchange it at a later time for something of his needs or wants.

What would it take to get HYP listed on Bittrex? It would be a pleasure for me, as I do most of my transactions there.
They're right here in Las Vegas, I'll go over and ask personally if it would help. Can't hurt being on another big exchange  Smiley
I contacted Bittrex two days ago with a long mail. If they are in Las Vegas, this means we could do something about the HYPcon to share costs...

TY.  I downloaded it and even though It was a compressed folder I didn't extract it as I didn't know where would be appropriate but instead followed your instructions and "just" double clicked it.  The wallet opened up and it's currently syncing.  There is no desktop icon.  After it finishes syncing should I extract it somewhere?  Will that give me a desktop icon?

Thank you all for your patience.

currently 25% snyced
And remember to encrypt your wallet. Theft DID happen!
788  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / HyperDigest #4 - HyperStorm on: October 18, 2014, 10:47:37 PM
(the title is unrelated to the supervillain of the same name)
Things are moving up way too fast.

Not so long ago, HYP was #2 or better in volume on all markets at Poloniex

Today, it reached marketcap position #38

And position #23 on coingecko. Notice how we still have a lot of potential in comunity and even more in public interest

Diff reached 1.5.

Price ATH

But the coin hits the max payout wall of 960,000/day around Dec 1st in 6 weeks.

On a less "stormy" side:
I am adding this tool to next wallet release in order to help people decide what block size to use

Great quote by presstab:
HYP is advanced. Fun, but advanced. I like to think of it in term of how Andreas described bitcoin to the Canadian senate, comparing bitcoin today to the internet in 1992.  Solid technology and protocol, but not easily usable by the mainstream yet.
That's the difference between Dogecoin and HyperStake. Both are meant for fun at first (and garnered an important and devoted community), but HyperStake came with a technological differenciator that Doge did not have (and was not mean to have anyway, that was not the point - and the random bonus doesn't count).

We are doing our best to make HyperStake even easier to. use optimally. The more we are widening the adoption, the more it is important to provide a seemless experience, which we do not provide yet despite our best efforts.

By the way, Coin Control will be renamed to make it more explicit and more exclusive to HyperStake. I will let presstab announce the new name (that I already like).

Oh! And, in the context of HypBerry, Lieutenant Commander Waxo will offer a Raspberry to one lucky person. Details are not public yet.

Thank you David for giving what I assume are the required dependencies.  However that does not change the fact that I understand nothing and therefore have no idea what to do with the code.

I need something along the lines of "The Idiot's Guide to Installing HYP" because when it comes to computers I am ignorant.
1. Copy command-line
2. Open terminal
3. Paste command-line and press enter
4. Go preparing a coffee, watch an episode of your favorite TV series (I recommand Century City or Real Humans)
5. Return to your computer and double-click the "HYP" shortcut

By the way: I just released HyperDigest #4 - HyperStorm.

I recently purchased some HYP and was looking to download the software/client.  I went to the wiki>installation and it starts with the following:

Paste this code on a shell (Unix only, or Windows with MinGW). This assumes you already have the required dependencies installed (including git).

Please help as I am ignorant.  Other than copy and paste I understand nothing.

The Drooling Masses®
I updated the command line, thank you for mentionning these shortcomings.

I am not 100% sure it works (I myself have some non replicable issues that no one understands), but the now command line, duplicated below, should take care of everything and use Qt5.

Code:
sudo apt-get install git build-essential libssl-dev libqrencode-dev libdb5.1-dev libdb5.1++-dev libminiupnpc-dev libminiupnpc8 && mkdir -p ~/cryptos && cd ~/cryptos && rm -rf HyperStake && git clone git://github.com/presstab/HyperStake && cd HyperStake && qmake HyperStake-qt.pro && make && ln -s ~/cryptos/HyperStake/release/HyperStake-qt ~/Desktop/HYP

ELI5 this please?
Buy now. HYP will become rarer later (not on the absolute, but relative to the demand).
791  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: United we stand, divided we fall - the coming rise of cryptofiat on: October 18, 2014, 09:00:10 PM
First, let's dispense with the idea that they care a great deal about money. They don't. The currency they deal in is power. Money is merely an aspect or symbol of that power. Losing control of it it is catastrophic to the way they currently do business, but if you look at the history of rulership, they're incredibly adaptable. In America, they have turned a nation of renegades and individualists into a sociofascist empire that maintains and appearance of liberty. So, looking to that, how might blockchains be incorporated?

One that I find obvious is that they can hide their legerdemain in plain sight. Instead of fractional reserves, they have an adjustable rate of proof of stake, based on some metric they control. It appears that all money creation is above board and clean... but they control the metric.

I could go on for a while on the ways they might subvert the technology while APPEARING to "fix" the economic system. If they can come off as heroes, then they elevate themselves and again appear to be the benevolent overlords.
Love it, will add to the the addendum

I'm just concerned that by keep repeating it, it starts to be considered a given. Resting on laurels and all. But I'm French, and French are known to be judgemental (althoug waxo would disagree) Smiley
Crazyloaf, I mentionned this on my mail to Bter: contrary to Doge, we have some serious technology behind us.

It's actually one of the reasons I was initially liked TEK and HBN, the communities were less full of nutjobs and seemed to be at least marginally aware of economic theory.
High-PoS is different. Difference scares sheeps away, what is left is people willing to think by themselves.

Protestants after Gutenberg, free thinkers in the 18th century, gays up to the 90's (but not anymore, now that gays are almost mainstream), gothic music lovers in the 70's and 80's... Examples abound and high-PoS is no different.
If the success of HYP continues, expect the SNR on high-PoS to go down. But that's a price I am willing to pay Smiley
797  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Miners dump, stakers don't on: October 17, 2014, 03:54:14 PM
Very insightful remark, aigeezer! I do not know if the algorithm could be tweaked and if would even be desirable. We plan to have OneBigHardFork in some month to implement everything that requires a hardfork at once, to minimize the amount of work for exchange and all. If we integrate such a tweak, that would be at that moment.

Regarding merchant adoption as a solution, this is worth considering. So far, we did not place much emphasis in this, because "experiment" and "merchant adoption" do not mix well; merchant adoption require an amount of "seriousness" that might be more than what we want, but this can change - merchant adoption can be viewed as an experiment too.

On a sidenote: similar to the Godwin point, the moment when a discussion is over because someone mentionned Hitler, I'd like to propose the "Lambo point". When people start to mention Lambos, a currency is threatened, because people live in delusions. Of course, this was a joke from you, but so is it to everyone - but as Goėring (or Himmler) mentionned it, repeat something long enough and it will become reality - read: people will take it seriously. Thus, reaching the Lambo point should make us cautious.

Rationality is overrated among most economists. We're are not creatures of pure logic, which annoys a lot of rationalists who have a hard time understanding why their perfectly valid theories do not work in real life.

On this intersection of finance and psychology, I encourage you to read this very informative essay on neurofinance
Breaking the Cycle of Investment Regret (also available in French). Eye opening.
Quote from: Breaking the Cycle of Investment Regret
It seems that not only are people far less rational in their decision making than economic theory assumes, but left to their own devices, many people also consistently repeat mistakes over and over again, even when the error has been pointed out.
" Reason: the amygdala, which overrides the neocortex. Solution according to some: meditation (or moral enhancement, if you're a transhumanist).

On a similar note, there is this article brought to my attention by DustOff in the Poloniex Trollbox: "Does 'free will' stem from brain noise?" This article hints that most decisions we make are unconsious and we rationalize them after the actual choice is made, giving us illusion that we took concious decision (which is similar to, albeit different from, cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias, which by the way are rampant in Cryptoland and source of a lot of people bagholding after a dump).

On an unrelated and somewhat amusing note, but still instructive for others: since yesterday, l felt like if I did not stake any block. No small non-round number in my new block, so I assumed nothing staked. I was starting to panick, especially after seeing minting actually occuring in the transaction window. See, my blocks are 4000 3900 3800 3700... down to 2500. (I later realised I did not have any 2600, more on this later) Then I realised one thing: my initial blocks are 4000 and I hit the max reward (1000). When block stakes, it gets splitted in two equal parts, so 4000+1000 (max reward) is 5000 or... two times 2500.
So I did stake but did not notice it!

Below, the green frame denotes the consolidated blocks I created ma,ually and the blue frame denotes the "natural" blocks, where I believe nothing happend whilst it just happened naturally. I'll call this the "block illusion".
So this was an illusion, but a convincing one. It may happen to you too.

forbesmining: I expect volume to come with time. Volume is steadily growing and we are working on some marketing stuff to increase audience (see "HYP for everyone").

800  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Miners dump, stakers don't on: October 17, 2014, 02:57:12 AM
Oftentimes, whales are hated because they can kill the market by dumping. This is still true for HyperStake (although it never damaged the market yet), but I believe this is much less of an issue for PoS than PoW.
Reason? With PoW, when you sell your coins, you leave your mining power intact (or maybe even more powerful, since with price drops, competing miners go mining something else, leaving more coins for you).
With PoS this is a completely different thing. When you sell you coins, you also sell your mining power and thus give the others more coins.
For this reason, I believe the fear of dumpers is much less of an issue in PoS. Except if the majority of stakers does not realise what they lose (or most of them are skilful dumpers but I would be very surprised about this one).

Opinion?
