1121  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: October 11, 2014, 11:26:21 PM
I have no conclusive scientific proof that it's helping but I have been able to operate my S3s with ambient temps up to 42C (107F) while clocked at 243.75M with no issues.  Alternatively, you can run the S3s on its side (controller in vertical position and adjacent to the heat sinks instead of on top of it) or perhaps even upside down (controller underneath the heat sinks).  I suggest to try these configurations out before you decide to RMA/replace the controller and see if it helps.  It couldn't hurt.
I have nothing beyond an anecdotal "gut feel", but over the last few hours since reading this post, rotating all my S3's so they are laying on their side (Bitmain logo facing up), they do seem to be running slightly more stably and cooler... Will continue monitoring.
I know what you mean.  I have always wanted to stick some temp sensors around the controller and get readings in different configurations/orientations in an effort to conclusively determine if they do make a difference but I can't afford the down time ("if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality on my part).  However, the one thing that we can go by to make sense out of it is that we do know that heat rises and in an enclosed environment, it would accumulate at the top.

Forgive me for budging in on this.
I totaly understand that most of the observations here are anecdotal, but I have never known any of my S3's to run without any of the fans turned on. Even when they are not hashing but connected to the pool, the fan still turns, albeit slowly. So my question is, how would the heat then have a chance of building up at the top?
Having said that, I'll give it a shot too.

I want to attach the following to the side of the inclosed cubical I build:  It is an air-conditioner for server cabinets.

$599.00 on Amazon.

SOMEBODY DOES NOT LIKE ME.

THEY WONT LET ME POST AN IMAGE NOW.

GO TO THIS LINK:

http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-SRCOOL12K-Portable-Conditioner/dp/B002XITVCK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1413068428&sr=1-1&keywords=server+air+conditioner

That is impressive! You sure are putting some outlay on your rigs! I wonder what hashing power for a set period you'd need to ROI with that installed? Saying that, is your best option mining in a pool rather than running your own P2Pool node? I've promised myself a couple of S4's (if I can get them in the next month) and I will then revert to my own node. I live near an exchange so latency "should" not be an issue.
1123  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [9000 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff on: October 11, 2014, 11:12:35 PM

My plans are to build a cubical out of 2x4 framing and plywood walls with hinged doors for access RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE WINDOW.

I want to have 3 exhaust fans.

1st for exhaust to suck heat out of the window during the summer with switch to turn off or on.
2nd to suck air into the cubical with switch to turn of or on.
3rd built up high in the cubical facing into the recreation room downstairs to turn on during the winter to heat the house.  The room is downstairs.  Heat rises and these things put out LOTS of heat.

It is a double hung window.  I'm taking the windows out and putting plywood in their place with holes cut into it for the exhaust fans.  I will put siding on the plywood from the outside to keep the plywood safe from water so it doesn't warp or mildew.

You know I mentioned how fast ASIC rigs depreciate? If I were you, I'd desist from making major structural changes to your house to cater for a particular ASIC rig. And like you said, your next rigs are S4's and they may require a different setup to the S3's and in any case both of which may turn out to be obsolete within the year!

But yeah, using the heat exhausted for this winter's heating is definitely one I have on the radar too.
1124  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [9000 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff on: October 11, 2014, 10:43:34 PM
Finished mowing the yard.

Back inside and straightened up [just a little bit] after hooking up the 13th S3.  I am so looking forward to those other 3 S3's getting here Monday.

I'm chilling the rest of the day.  I'll work on the sub panel this evening [maybe] but most certainly tomorrow.

I've been remodeling the downstairs.  That is new tile on the floor.  That's also why you do not see base molding yet [remodeling].

EDIT: >>> redacted image <<<

I think your next step will be to manage that exhaust efficiently, including that from the PSU's. With your setup, I'd be tempted to simply muzzle each exhaust fan and redirect either outside or to heating, but you have the PSU hest to contend with. I keep my rig in the garden (I built a fairly water-tight cubicle for them from scavenged kitchen cabinets) and simply exhaust it out, and the ambient is never that high (even in the just ended HOT summer here!).

Updated OP with upgrade to cgminer 4.6.1 (and 4.6.0 with firmware update).

Which firmware did you use with cgminer 4.6.1?
Was it this one - antMiner_S320140826.bin which it says supports S3+?  Is it ok for original S3s as well?

Yes, the latest firmware (for the S3+) will work with an original S3. My S3's are batch 6, which was before the S3+.
Note that after updating the firmware, you will have to re-install 4.6.1 as the firmware still ships with the bitmain cgminer (I think version 3 ..?)

Many thanks. I'll give it a go. Smiley

I hope you know the nuasances of updating antminer firmware! Here's a recap that gets a few people.
When you update the firmware, it will re-set the IP to the default one (can't recall, is it 192.168.1.99 ??) and set the network to static IP. So if you have any rigs on that IP, change them before you start.
Also since you'll be updating from a different IP, the UI will keep showing and reporting that it is still updating (in fact it may have already finished!). Thus after a minute or two after initiating the firmware update, open a new browser window and point it to 192.168.1.99
The first thing you should do after updating and loging in is to change the network back to DHCP client, then you'll be able to download cgminer, else you may (will) get a wget error.

No worries ... do what you have to do!
Impressive farm you have out there ..... but you can reduce your investment by steering clear of OFF-THE-SHELF psu's and opting for server psu's if you are not afraid to get your hands dirty. (just my 2 cents)

Agreed...

I'm a stickler for good equipment!

Thought I could sell them on eBay and get some of my investment back if worse came to worse.
Fair enough for being a stickler for good (looking?) equipment, and yes, you can recoup some of the outlay by flogging the PSU's on ebay.
My approach to bitcoin mining is that the golden egg is the ASIC rig and not the PSU (though technically a rig has to include the PSU!), but seeing how quickly the ASIC rigs depreciate, I target the fastest route to ROI on the complete rig, and for that, a server PSU does the trick.

For my S3+'s, I use a Dell server PSU that I can get running for no more than 20 GBP (approx 30 USD), that including the PSU itself, all the wiring and the required 6 pin PCIe sockets. But then again, the PSU's I use may not work for you if you are not on a 230V supply. But that means that I treat the PSU as disposable and do not look to recoping anything from them (should the worst happen!), but in terms of good equipment, they sure are designed better than normal PC PSU's.

What do I do after uploading to posting.com?  I inserted in an "insert image" then previewed and the image does not show in preview.  Do I first have to do a "hyper link" to postimg.com and then do an "insert image" inside of the "hyper link?"

Actually, you do NOT need to have it as https.
When you upload to postimg.com you'll get a dialog like this:

The all you do is select the copy to clipboard button next to the Direct Link and paste the link in a message here.
Finally, select the link inside the message and click on the Insert Image button, voilla!

Thank you.

I was able to figure it out.

Still 4 of us left at the final table in the 10M Poker Stars play money tourney.  I NEED TO GET ON THE YARD.  Neighbors house up for sale next door.  Do not want to leave a bad impression on potential new neighbors.

No worries ... do what you have to do!

bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty    <---------- you could just supply the link to the website you get the info from so people can go fav it etc might save some valuable internet space lmao Cheesy

https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty
there ya go also for photos use imagur it will allow you to post Cheesy

imagur?  What's that?  An App?  If so, is it compatible with Mac OS?
believe its a website / app Google it not sure just read that's what everyone on here uses
It's a PC App.  Can't use it on my Mac's

I'll figure it out.
To post a photo, simply upload it to any image host that can give you an https link to it, I use (like most people here) http://postimg.com

Is anyone else putting their S3's on LeaseRig?  I have a couple on there and everything works great using the bitmain original cgminer.  However, if I replace that with the new cgminer Ckolivas posted I get very erratic behavior when someone rents the miner.  Things like low or 0 hashrate, it reboots, or otherwise just stops mining.  If I swap out Ckolivas' new build of cgminer with the Bitmain original it all runs fine again.

Am I missing something?  Setting something wrong?

Same here.  All of mine run better with the Bitmain version (3.12.0).  The 4.6.1 (and 4.6.0) starts off faster, but after letting it run 24 hours, the miner side average was a little lower than the Bitmain version.  And the pool-side average with 4.6.x was much lower.   I'm mining with ghash.io.

lol... They would not start mining if cgminer was not executable.

What batch of S3's do you have and do they have the latest firmware installed?
I did some tests after the original 4.6 was published (see link in my signature) and I experienced reduced hashrate and rolled back to the stock cgminer. However, when I upgraded my S1's with the upgrade kit, the upgraded (with the latest firmware) ones were hashing faster than my S3's, and the only difference was the firmware which I decided to upgrade and voilla, order was returned with the proper S3's hashing slightly higher (and consistently) than my upgrades. When 4.6.1 was published, I installed it on both factory S3's and my upgrades and BOTH hash better and faster than before.

So, to get the best / most out of cgminer 4.6.1 I'd ensure you have the latest firmware AND reboot via SSH after updgrading cgminer rather than restart.
EDIT: - Note that if you flush the latest firmware, you'll have to re-install cgminer 4.6.1 as the firmware has the stock version.

chmod +x cgminer

Did you make it executable?

To add to the above, low hashrate in the UI sometimes happens when you restart cgminer rather than reboot. After updating to the new cgminer and making it executable, reboot the S3 via SSH not the UI.
1134  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] Antminer S3 UK Only on: October 10, 2014, 01:05:41 PM
I keep saying this, the only why ill purchase one is with a group buy for the UK ... or someone else in th UK who has bough a job lot and selling for good prices.

Then I suppose you need to initiate the group buy. But still, you do not say what a good price is, but seeing GBP 150 is still steep for you, then I'll have to conclude that you are looking for a giveaway.

Buying one unit from a country outside the UK is not really an option, we need an order of 10 or more to get realistic discounts.

All S3's are from China, so I do not get that argument if (as in the ones I highlighted) the cost is palatable, and you can ROI. Seeing S3+'s are going for GBP 200 + shipping on ebay today, I struggle to think you can get a better deal (assuming it is real) than the one I posted. But hey, if you start the group-buy and it materialises, who knows?

You might consider buying osmething else, then.

https://minereu.com/product/a1-btc-miner/

I never had trouble with minereu except the rusty gridseed pods from the last batches.
It seems not everybody was as lucky as I am, but for 300$, (second hand), it might worth the try.
And it isn't a sponsored or anything link.

For some reason, they are supposed to be "final ten", but I was able to add 40 to my cart  Huh
That site is DEFINITELY down.

You say getting a used S3+ for GBP 200 will never ROI, so what are you looking to pay for it?
Are you really serious you want to buy an S3 or are you doing a bit of market research?

If you are serious and want to buy, send this guy a PM https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=249561
He "apparently" has 15 S3 batch 8 for sale at CAD 266 (250 + 16 shipping), which is approx GBP 150. He says he is in the Netherlands (so I am not sure why he quoted me CAD!)

I use "Terminal" occasional on my Mac OS.  However, not sure if I'm needing to do what you suggest with my Batch 8's as you have suggested.  I might do it later, in a couple of months, or especially if they stop mining for whatever reason.

If you can log into your batch 8 S3 using terminal, then you should find the time to update it as the updated cgminer plugs some security flaws that (still!) ship with the S3+ today.

It is actually not as laborious as you may think and it takes a few minutes at the most, just make sure you do all the steps sequentially (not forgetting the chmod +x cgminer which most people forget).

EDIT: - if you are running the stock cgminer, you will DEFINITELY improve your peek hash-speed no doubt, so I would urge you to go ahead and do it.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=671189.msg9134744#msg9134744

Please tell me how to update my S3+ miners.

Is it under "System" then "Software" then "Actions" after logging into the miner?

If that is where you go, what do I do after that?

I am not sure what you mean by updating your S3+, however, if you are refering to the latest cgminer, then you should SSH into the S3 and login then enter these commands: (press enter after each line)

cd /usr/bin
mv cgminer cgminer.bak
wget http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/antminer/s3/4.6.1-141009/cgminer
chmod +x cgminer
reboot

I see we're down to 6.7Ph again - the extra 1.4Ph has hopped away.
Must be a very unhappy individual .... we never reached the staggering heights of a couple of weeks ago while he was around!
On a more positive note (and while he's away), let's hope our luck takes a turn for the better today (55% never looked good on any day!)
