Those must have been running even before the S5 was released! They have an S3 control board and not the latterday BBB ...... . I got my first S5 in the very first batch and it had a BBB!

WOW! And to think you paid more for this than anyone did for a brand new one must leave you feeling sick.

You probably were running those S3's in a cool environment .... I've had a few scrapes with singly powered S3 boards during the winter. The cables may be in spec when running at those speeds, but bitmain's testing is also based on average ambients, so low(er) ambients will result in better efficiency and higher power draws ....

Bitmain's testing is based off Eastern farm temps of 35-40C without evaporative. That's about the limit for an S4+ without risking them flicking off but the other previous miners can go higher without issue. That's not to say anything about the S5+'s performance or capability, I have not tested it.

More waffle than fact ... as far as I know, 25C is the stated rating ambient (for power draw cum et al?), with a recomended 35C operating ambient. To me that says tested at 25C.
You were trying to detail Bitmain's testing protocols, without actually knowing Bitmain's testing procotols...

You really are a chancer. What reason do I have to know "bitmain's testing protocols" (whatever that means) if they clearly state the basis for their specifications' ratings (ambient inclusive)? You really do not need to know more than that, just read the specifications ...  (no wonder bitmain customer service is down the drain if they count you amongst them, you fraud).

So where did you pick that nonsense of Eastern farm temps of 35-40C other than the need to waffle no end, when you could have read it off the specs? By the way, no need to answer, I tired of your tripe.

OK, we get the message now thanks. He is a fraud (not unlike many on this forum), and been caught pants down, no doubt.

OK felix73 - any insight into how these run? Also, where did you buy yours from?

There ... proof of existence in the wild, if any was needed. Still, a bit pricey.

Well it is smart to put individual heatsinks on all the chips, I am surprised they didn't do that originally with the S5.

Yes, they have done so. A few s5's with small heatsinks went on the market. It has not increased shipping costs. I think it was a test series before the development of the model s5 + and perhaps before s7 if one appears.

Aahh ... thats where I was wrong too. The S5 has small heatsinks on the rear and the large heatsink on the chip heads. From the picture of the S5+, it looks like they've done away with the large heatsink completely and they have slightly larger individual heatsinks on the chip heads and the smaller heatsinks (similar to what some S5's shipped with) on the rear.
129  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: World biggest bitcoin /SHA256 miner 7.7T@3400W on: August 09, 2015, 11:57:51 AM

Well, those individual heatsinks are on the backside of the chips, but, aside from the increased weight for shipping, I'd have prefered the S3 type top heatsink on the reverse side rather than those little things.

Do not think. Look at the image .

Actually, I am right and wrong in the same measure.... seems like they have individual heatsinks on each chip as well as on the backside of the PCB. That is some strange contraption there ..... well, from what we've become accustomed to from them.
In any case, unless they offer these beasts modularly, I shall not be in the market for them (both on price and power requirements).

bitmain should have been running 8 pin pci-e plugs since the s3..

this is from a seasonic 850 watt psu, running 2 s3s.. running at 225 speed.
this psu came with 4 PCI-E cables with 2 plugs each.. so all 4 of the pci-e plugs on the s3s were plugged in.

as you can see, it melted..

the s5 uses more power from the pci-e then the s3 does..
any plug in style the same as this will eventually melt..

.....
S5 at stock clock or below is within the spec of the connector (official 590 watts "at the wall" is more like 540ish or a little less DC, so 270ish per connector) but even running a stock clock S5 on one connector per board is pushing your luck a bit. Will probably work most of the time as long as the S5 is in a fairly cool room, don't bet on it in summer heat in most areas without A/C of some sort.
....

Agreed its pushing the connector even at stock for an S5 (if only 1 is connected per board).
On the other hand, the bolded is actually reverse to what you say. If the ambient is warmer / hotter you'll probably get more HW errors than run the risk of pushing the power draw on the connector(s), but have a cooler ambient and you'll get fewer HW errors and more power draw as the chips do not get reset.

Now look what all the talk about this monster has done to the price of BTC .....

I can see that an additional fan would be needed but why a new enclosure and why could the controller not be upgraded? Surely the interface to and driving any of the BM series of chips cannot not be that different?

They used different connectors for the S5 boards from those on the S3 (and different from the S1 to S3 which introduced the controller board).
S5 PCB board to controller cables are 2 rows of nine pins, whereas the S3 PCB to controller connectors are 2 rows of 10 pins (and as you may have guessed, different sizes). The connectors on the monster look similar those on the S5 though.

So is this miner real?

First off, it's an S5+ and not an S7 as insinuated to be the next from bitmain by some pretenders, and it is real.
But like the S3+ prior to the S5, it seems to be thus far, a reserve for the Chnese market.

can anything be read from the pricing of the used S5's?

Yeah. Time to find a new hobby.

What, you giving up on trolling? That'd be a great upside .... and aptly the + in the name.

19000 Yuan which is approx US $ 3060.00 then add shipping for 11KG (and taxes)
http://shop.bitmain.cn/goods.php?id=47

That made me think .... one module at US $ 1020 plus shipping ..... 2.5TH/s @ 1145W per module ..... can anything be read from the pricing of the used S5's?

Where do the specs cited come from? That's not what one would expect from Bitmain. Unless they are giving up their small form factor for more big mine oriented ASIC. That would further favor hash centralization however...

why would you see a 7 to 8Th/s rig as oriented to the big miners / farms given the growing network hash speed? I actually think it brings the home miner back into the game, and the form-factor is only 3x that of the S5 (at tiwce what you'd get from 3 S5's in hash-speed).

I've had a bit of an issue the last couple of days and I'm hoping to nip it in the bud...

By process of simple elimination, I'd say the issue is with your internet connection.
It may be that it is reset at 6am every morning (of late) for some reason, and could that also explain the issues you had with your local P2Pool node?

The only issue with the p2pool really was that it caused high pings for an online game. I don't see how an internet issue would cause the miner to become unresponsive on the local network either.

If you have other S5's connected and running without issue then you are right to suggest an internet issue can not cause your S5's to become unresponsive, however, having run a few S5's in my time, I know an internet outage CAN cause all sorts of issues with S5's, including (but by no means limited to) becoming un-responsive.

It's down to you whether you explore that or not, but the dual incidence of your S5's failure to connect @6AM on consecutive days is too much of a coincidence to rule out internet failure (maybe running your node ran got you over your broadband allowance / fair usage threshhold and your ISP is reseting the connection at 6AM ...?).

You asked the question, and you got a legitimate answer.
