1301  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Oops - 20BTC fee paid on .05 transaction? on: December 16, 2013, 03:57:06 AM
No wonder my last p2pool payout was almost double what I'd expected.

For what benefit? It is not like commodity motherboards are expensive and unobtainable.

The wave in the picture is clearly a photoshopped wind wave and not a tsunami. Tsunamis have a much longer wavelength than a wind wave.

I recently  bought around $12K worth of Amazon gift cards from gyft.com using Bitpay as the payment method. In most cases, I finished loading the code into my Amazon account long before the first confirmation happened.

Is anyone using Seasonic X1250W supplies for their November Jupiters? I found that after about a minute after bootup (when the Jupiter is about to start hashing), the PSU shuts down. I let the PSU reset itself (takes several minutes), try again, same results. Consistent and repeatable. I tried 2 separate X1250's and 2 separate November Jupiters with the same result.

Obviously 1250W should be plenty, and the Seasonic is a high-quality supply, so I'm not sure what is causing the shutdowns. I normally have the X1250's running 4 BFL SC Singles without any issue, and those take more power than a Jupiter.

I had some Corsair AX860's kicking around so I tried those for the Jupiters. They work well and I haven't had any trouble after 24 hours now.

I can confirm this will happen with the X Series.

I made a Previous post on this btw...

Try plugging one of the PCI-e connectors to the socket marked CPU/PCI-e on the Seasonic X1250W. The shutdown seems to go away if you do this.  Not sure why this happens as this is supposedly a single-rail PSU.

Why do you even use an admin account as your regular account? This is like running root for everything under Linux. I have trained some non-technical Windows users to always run their regular stuff as a non-admin user and they have never picked up a single virus in the past 10 years or so.
1307  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Protecting my offline wallets from physical theft on: December 10, 2013, 07:11:25 AM
Here is a simple solution that I use:

Place the encrypted wallet into an encrypted RAR/ZIP file protected by a strong passphrase. Put one copy of the file in a safe deposit box (USB drive) and the another copy on some online cloud storage or webmail account. Use a non-obvious name for the file.

Delete all other copies of the wallet. You can optionally do a DoD 3 wipe of the disk that held the wallet.

If it is a savings wallet, you can continue send BTC to the receiving address(es) in the wallet and check the balance on Blockchain.info.

If you ever restore the wallet to spend BTC, make sure to update all the cold backups so that you capture all the change addresses.

He is probably massively long Bitcoin and attempting reverse psychology on the masses to get them to buy into the whole idea.
1309  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why didn't you sell? on: December 10, 2013, 06:01:44 AM
I sold a bit at around 1100 to buy Christmas gifts but left the rest of my coins in a cold wallet intact.

Why? I've traded long enough to know that it takes a considerable amount of effort and skill to time the markets consistently. A little bit of luck along the way helps too. I see Bitcoin as a long term thing, and I have other things going on in life that prevent me from focusing on short term Bitcoin trading. I am still holding on to coins that have gained well over 10,000% since I first mined/bought them in 2011. I don't feel the need to attempt to capture the odd 60% extra gain every time there is a crash.

1310  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] US/North American Bitfury sales now open ***full prototype pics*** on: December 08, 2013, 04:15:38 PM
Seriously, how naive are you people?!  The cost to produce something has virtually nothing to do with the retail price.  There's this thing called "supply and demand" that determines the price of everything we buy.  If no one is willing to buy something at a particular price, then the price will drop.

But in this market of $60-80 USB Block Erupters (on eBay) there is very little chance that we will see significantly lower prices on miners unless the price of Bitcoin really hits the shitter.  If/when that happens companies like Bitfury won't be able to give their stuff away.
I am curious to see who will buy an H-card priced at $999. In the past, I have had the tendency to buy overpriced hardware for the fun factor, but this just doesn't appeal to me. I have an M-board with 8 empty slots and I feel some urge to fill them up. I could spend $8K to fill up these slots. Or I could use the $8K to pre-order 1.4 TH/s worth of Coincraft hardware for end of Feb delivery. I am more inclined to do the latter.

1311  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Thinking about getting out of mining... input? on: November 30, 2013, 11:58:31 AM
I started mining with a 5880 about 3 years ago.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a 5880? Is that something in between a Radeon 5870 and a Radeon 5970?

Got my 2 November Jupiters and powered them up with Seasonic 1250W X series PSUs. Setup was unbelievably easy - I was expecting a lot of problems based on what I've been reading on this thread, so it was a pleasant surprise.

They get 680 and 690 GH/s on firmware 0.99-E while drawing 870 Watts each at the wall. I am quite satisfied with the this and won't bother messing around trying to tune them for a few extra GH/s. I'm just going stuff these two boxes in the basement and forget about them until next year when my Neptunes arrive to take their place.

2 ASICMINER blades for $100, 000 back in May.

back from the noise about the new product preorders to the main important things: did anyone receive a jupiter device nov batch?

will the status of the device then also go from "PAID" to "IN PROGRESS" before it will shipped?

No, but I have a UPS tracking number that says that a November Jupiter is in transit from Stockholm to the North East US.

Edit: Yes the status changed to SHIPPED when I got the tracking number.
1315  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official BITMINE CoinCraft series 28nm ASIC miners thread on: November 26, 2013, 01:20:01 AM

Get an electrician to wire in a 220-240V 30A branch circuit for the rig.
Unfortunately, not everyone in North America has 2-phase 120V service, which you need to get 240V. I have access to 2 mining locations: one has single-phase service (120V only) and the other has 3-phase service (120 V and 208 V). I suppose a 208V 20A circuit is good enough to run a Rig in Turbo mode.
1316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you want to pay the fee? on: November 24, 2013, 03:54:06 PM
0.0001/kB BTC fee * $1000/BTC = $0.10. You can avoid fees that are multipliers of the minimum by not filling your wallet with only trivial dust payments that are more expensive to spend than to discard.

This.  This is why loitering around "free bitcoin dust" sites is a waste of time and a bad idea.  I remember when I finally had enough 'dust' to do something with, the transaction fee was brutal. But I paid it, because, lesson learned.
Running a p2pool node at a low hash rate (currently below 10 GH/s) also causes this problem. I have about $2000 worth of BTC dust crumbs sitting in a p2pool mining account and the client is asking for about $400 in fees to transfer them out. I think I know how to reduce this by transferring larger chunks into the address and letting them sit for a few months and become candidates for higher priority transactions.
1317  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: US person buys home abroad with bitcoin. What about taxes? on: November 24, 2013, 01:46:54 AM
He never sells bitcoins but just exchanges bitcoins for a house. How to find out the value of bitcoin if there are no official exchange rate yet?
You need to make a reasonable attempt to compute the mark-to-market fiat value of the coins on the date (or dates) they were acquired, as well as on the date they were exchanged for the property. A 24-hour average of the Mt. Gox and Bitstamp prices on those dates would probably be adequate. This is what my tax accountant and myself have decided upon, even though we are not 100% sure. At least that is what you'd do under GAAP if the bitcoins were some other type of commodity, e.g. bars of gold.
1318  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 23, 2013, 02:29:07 PM
Has anyone recently bought hashing modules from the Avalon store? I remember a couple of months ago you needed to specify the batch # with your order because of the different placement of screw holes for the different batches. Now the selection box is gone. Does this mean that the hashing modules currently for sale fit all 3 batches?
1319  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official BITMINE CoinCraft series 28nm ASIC miners thread on: November 22, 2013, 12:59:36 PM
Has any additional information been released about the power supplies that will be used on the Desk and Rig models? Can customers with 110V AC go for the full 2 TH/s Rig? Seems like you might need dual power supplies from 2 separate circuits.

I am low on amps and outlets in my basement, so I have to start thinking about these things, LOL. Because of this uncertainly I only ordered the 1 TH/s Desk model even though I would have preferred  2 TH/s.

2 different production fabs will be producing some test cards.
How about some kind of M-board, while you are at it?  Grin
