You probably need to install AMD OpenCL drivers.
1342  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What risks do I face by building my computer w/o a case? on: March 28, 2013, 10:43:29 PM
0) More fan noise
1) EM Radiation, wont kill you, but will probably mess up radio/TV/wifi reception.
2) No airflow over the motherboard caps can cause them to overheat and catch fire.
3) Electrocution from small fingers/paws touching it.
4) Short circuit from dropping crap in it and the bottom touching something metal.
5) For god sake don't put it on anything flammable you could burn down your house down.

davincij15's cardboard server cabinet gives me nightmares!  Shocked

1343  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What does FPGA "stuck on 256" mean? on: March 28, 2013, 10:31:16 PM

Bad points:

Quote
0 resale if bitcoin goes poof

Wrong FPGAs are used in electronics and science they have a resale value.

Quote
high investment price way above GPUs

About twice as expensive, but that's made up by the electricity cost savings you make.

Quote
large area needed for farms

Rubbish FPGAs are way smaller than PCs and graphics cards

Quote
complicated for farms

I dunno how sticking it in a USB port and installing drivers is any more complicated than a PC graphics card and installing drivers.

Quote
Stuck on 256.

He means SHA256, as far as I know only ASICs are stuck with what they're made to do, FPGAs are re-programmable.

Quote
Pretty hard to find used (decent price).

That's because they are good at what they do!
1344  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: buying bitcoins uk on: March 28, 2013, 09:01:49 PM
Yeah last I heard MtGox had their UK bank account closed. Did they ever fix that?  Huh
1345  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcon (aka Bitcoin) can't scale! on: March 28, 2013, 03:06:43 PM
Litecoin solved this by going smaller.

Gold doesn't scale either.

Germany is expecting a 7 year transaction time to get it's gold back from the Fed  Wink
1346  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Pool fees for an asic users are somewhat amusing on: March 28, 2013, 02:22:40 PM
Pools that are honest and upfront about charging 3% and pay daily PPS are generally much better than pools that claim to have 0% fee but then keep all the processing fees, namecoins and come up with some wierd delayed payment scam scheme.

You learn from experience.  Wink

Who would have guessed that at this point Tom would be more honorable and trustworthy than BFL. Good on you tom for not just fucking off with the cash.
+ 1

Also, when everything has been paid back i vouch for "de-scammer" tagging him.

The mess is still ugly, but I concur.

If the money cannot be given back promptly one has to suspect it has been spent.
If it's coming back in drips and drabs one could suspect it was spent on a mining farm and he's mining back the money.
If you use a pre-order to obtain a free loan for equipment or investment that is still a scam, it's called an arbitrage scam. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_and_wire_fraud

GPU cards;
5950
5970
6950

Will a 650W do?

No 650w 2x PCI-E 6+2 will blow! Wink

You need something in the 1000w range with 6x PCI-E 6+2 connectors.

1350  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buying coins with card/paypal etc? on: March 28, 2013, 01:02:32 PM
People get scammed by charge backs so it's very hard to find a seller that way but you could try eBay.
1351  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Guiminer Gigabyte ATI HD5770 help on: March 28, 2013, 12:54:18 PM
The 5770 is a horrible card get very hot and dies easily.

5830 for same price is better than 5770/6770.

Did you get it from a shop or ebay? Is it able to run games? Are you using Windows or Linux?
1352  Bitcoin / Mining / We're gonna need a BIGGER BitcoinX chart!!! on: March 28, 2013, 12:14:55 PM

1353  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Harnessing wasted heat? Post your pics and ideas! on: March 28, 2013, 11:36:28 AM
There are no dangerous gases coming off your PC.  Cheesy

E.U. even took the lead out of the solder to protect the people recycling components!

The smell from new electronics is flux and it burns off pretty fast and is harmless.

The biggest danger from running PC's 24x7 is dust build up which I've seen set on fire!

So keep the CPU, GPU and PSU heatsinks clean.

Pulling the dust out of the air is probably beneficial for health especially if you have asthma.
1354  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: mixing cards on: March 28, 2013, 11:23:31 AM
Just works, at least on 12.11beta, which is what I use with 7850,5830,6850.
1355  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon always stop work,0Mhz.Your avalon happen? on: March 28, 2013, 12:31:30 AM
Overheating?

If it's reliable time to failure you could write a script or cron job to do a system reboot every 9hrs.

or put a power timer on the mains electric cable.

This is an interesting quote...

Quote
"I would like to point out the fact that there still isn't any viable competitors in this market place. Avalon has shipped at most 300 units which has taken them 3 months to accomplish - we are geared up to ship that many (and more) per day." BFL-Josh (03-25-2013)

Oh goody, another BFL thread...boy, we really needed that.

Oh, come on, it was funny!

I don't know if Josh knows it but the customer he's replying to, Davincij15, has invested like BTC 3000 in pre-orders that would have been worth $267,000 at todays price. The guy deserve a factory tour to put his mind at rest at least after that much commitment.

"The process to bring a brand new ASIC to life is not as simple as turning it on. The fact that some people think it is, is an indicator that they have never actually done so. There is a lot of testing, poking, prodding and debugging that needs to happen to get a chip up and running and if someone tells you differently, they are incorrect, plain and simple. ...then Mattsdx points out the "someone / some people" who said this...

LOL, owned by his own comment. Cheesy
1359  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoins and taxes when used directly to buy goods in the US on: March 27, 2013, 10:04:37 PM
If you mined the bitcoins there is no capital gain in $ value but if you sold them you report the $ ammount as income.

If you bought bitcoins with $ and they gain in value then you have a capital gain on an investment to report.

USA also made all barter trades taxable, so even if you don't use $, you are still subject to tax if you barter for goods and services.
So even if you mine Bitcoins and spend them as Bitcoins you're not going to escape US tax!

1360  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: transfer unconfirmed.. long time on: March 27, 2013, 10:02:10 PM
Yes a higher fee will get your transaction processed faster as some pools to reject freebies transaction confirmations.
