1401  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transaction fee on: March 06, 2011, 12:57:14 PM
I don't think any miner will ever put free tx in before fee tx. So say 1000 tx fit in a block and there are 2000tx waiting that have fees both miners will include the exact same set of tx. But if there are only 600 tx with fees then one will include only those 600 and the other will include those 600 plus 400 free tx. Both miners will receive the exact same amount of fees.

I suppose things change a little in 120 years when there is no per block reward. Some miners might wait to search for a block until there was a fee tx and some might start "for charity" as soon as there was any tx at all.
Got it (I think!) Rather than increasing the coins available to the "non-free pool" at the expense of "free pool", the effect of non-free pool's rejection of fee-free transactions will be to increase the waiting time for fee-free txs before they're confirmed. (Which should lead to more tx fees, which in turn will benefit all miners/pools). Thanks for your patience!
1402  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transaction fee on: March 05, 2011, 08:02:25 PM
One can create an alternative pool without fees, pools are uncontrollable.
Sure. But would you want to join such a pool, if it was competing with pools that did levy transaction fees? Given a choice between a share of 50 BTC or a share of 50 + 0.5 (say) BTC, I'd prefer to go with the pool that levied fees.

You can't 'levy' fees. A fee is either attached or it is not. Rejecting no-fee transactions does not make you more in fees. A pool that includes some free tx does not give up any fees that are attached to other tx.
Poor choice of words on my part. I'm not sure I get the second part, however. If one pool ("free pool") doesn't reject any transactions, it will get some transaction fees. However, if another pool ("non-free pool") does reject fee-less transactions, it'll (a) ensure that it gets a fee from every transaction it handles, and (b) it'll leave fee-free transactions for "free pool" to handle. Put another way, we know that every block generated by "non-free pool" is going to have transaction fees in addition to the 50 BTC. We don't that that's the case for "free pool": sometimes there will be transaction fees, sometimes not. Or am I missing something?

1404  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: "Windows cannot find..." anything I place after poclbm.exe in my batch file on: March 05, 2011, 06:03:31 PM
Hi there,

I'm trying to get into bitcoin mining, but I keep running into the same problem with several different mining apps.

when using the batch file with the following line:

start /DC:\Program_Files_(x86)\Bitcoin\python\poclbm.exe -d1 --host=deepbit.net --port=8332 --
user=mrgiles1@gmail.com --pass=*********

I get the following:

Windows cannot find '-d1' Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again.

Can anyone help with this?  I haven't been able to find anyone with the same issue.

Thanks,

Daniel

Win7 Home
i5 M 480 @ 2.67Ghz
Nvidia GEForce GT 420M 1Gig

Just a guess, but how does Windows/DOS know when the file path ends? Maybe that's the problem? Try putting double-quotes ("s) around the path:

start /D "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bitcoin\python\poclbm.exe" -d1 --host=deepbit.net --port=8332 --
user=mrgiles1@gmail.com --pass=*********

(Also, there was a space missing between "/D" and "C:\" - I presume that was a typo?)

(Edit: replaced underscores with spaces).

1406  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Ho do I GPU mine with Windows? on: March 05, 2011, 01:45:05 PM
There's also a GUI, which might simplify things.
1407  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Ho do I GPU mine with Windows? on: March 05, 2011, 01:40:24 PM
I did a google but results seem to imply you can only GPU mine on a linux machine. Don't get me wrong, I love linux but I don't have a linux machine available.

I have a Windows XP machine with an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro on it. Dunno if this card is any good either but it'll probably be better than trying to mine with the CPU.

So, any help would be appreciated.
Can't help with Windows, but there's a forum poster who's created a live CD for mining. It looks like the ATI side of things is still a work in progress, however. You could boot from the live CD for mining, then reboot sans-CD for regular Windows use.

Are you certain that the HD 2600 Pro has OpenCL? A cursory Google suggested it might not (but all the threads I saw were Mac-focussed, so YMMV...)

Sometimes it shows
It's just you.
sometimes
It's not just you!

So, I can confirm, that your problem exists.

I've still got "174.121.74.59 mtgox.com" in my hosts file from the DNS change the other day, and MtGox works for me. DNS problems recurring, maybe?

Edit: removed mtgox.com from my hosts file, still works. There's another thread where it's suggested that the problem is with Google's DNS servers. Could that be the problem here? (Doesn't fully explain why Downforeveroneorjustme would see the site as down, unless they hit Google's DNS...)
1409  Economy / Economics / Re: New bitcoincharts.com is live! on: March 03, 2011, 09:14:01 PM
mtgox is changing servers and the DNS hasn't updated yet. I hope this will fix itself within a few hours
Ah, I actually knew that but for some reason hadn't made the connection. Looks like it's fixed now, anyway. And thanks again for a fantastic resource!
1410  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Letter to the EFF on: March 03, 2011, 07:02:50 PM
LMGTFY, it's not likely they are transferring the coins to mybitcoin themselves. The address is a mybitcoin.com address - it happens automatically.

My belief is that the motivation behind establishing a donation box for the EFF wasn't just to help them raise money, but as a way of introducing bitcoin to the EFF, with the hope that EFF will take the time to learn how bitcoin works and become an ally in advocating it to other organizations. If they find a way report it as donation income, for example, then that would set a precedent that the rest of us could follow. Like you said ribuck, EFF has better things to do then install some software and help us debug it. But, thanks to your donations, now they have a stake in it, and an incentive to play along!

It's none of our business what they do with it, but if it's the case that they're just sitting in the account because we haven't followed up on it, then I it's appropriate for us to let them know about the alternatives. It should be a learning opportunity, I'm pretty sure that was the whole point.

All true, and all good, and I'm happy that the EFF have the opportunity to learn about bitcoins, but it still doesn't explain the need for our concern right now. If the EFF really doesn't know what to do with the bitcoins they've received, the coins will sit then and probably appreciate in value. We'll find out when the EFF release their next set of accounts, and can nudge them then. Until then, this still seems like a solution in search of a problem. Which is fine when it's our time; it's much less fine when it's the time of an over-worked campaigning organisation.
1411  Economy / Economics / Re: New bitcoincharts.com is live! on: March 03, 2011, 06:39:48 PM
Is it just me, or are the prices no longer updating? I'm seeing MtGox USD/LR prices from 03:48:25 UTC on the main page, and the markets and charts pages. (Bitcoin monitor is showing several trades since then).

Other than than, I'm liking the new look a lot. Market depth is fantastic, the chart on the markets page is brilliant, and the main page layout is superb.
1412  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Letter to the EFF on: March 03, 2011, 06:32:42 PM
LMGTFY, the EFF donation address is associated with a mybitcoin.com account. All we can tell is that the coins have been collected by the wallet of mybitcoin.com. Unless EFF has been actively managing their bitcoins, they're still in the mybitcoin account.

The only way we could find out (besides logging into their account, which would be unethical) is to ask them!
So... they're receiving bitcoins at one address, they know how to transfer them to Mybitcoin, but we're assuming that they don't know that they then need to spend them? I agree with the posters above - it would be unethical to pry into their affairs. This seems like a classic case of "nothing to see here", a solution in search of a problem: it's like someone saying "I know you got paid a salary this month, but I'm concerned that once your wages were in your bank account you didn't know what to do with them. Can I peek into your bank account to check that you're spending your wages?" Hell, maybe the EFF want to save their bitcoins and spend them on something big? Is this really any of our business? EFF members have a right to find out, and I darer say they will in good time, when the EFF next release a report. But it really doesn't seem like it's any of our business.

1413  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Letter to the EFF on: March 03, 2011, 06:18:08 PM
ribuck, I nearly agree with you and this is one reason I went to the forum first.

However, don't you think the potential to redeem a $3,000 donation is worth their time?

It looks like EFF only has 0.25 BTC in that address at the moment (the the Balance column at the very bottom of the page).  Although they have received over 3000 BTC in the course of that address's history.  They seem to be spending the coins as soon as they receive them.
1414  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox is down on: March 03, 2011, 03:37:33 PM
The new server appears to be fully functional. You just need to add the new IP 174.121.74.59 to your hosts file until your favorite DNS provider refreshes.

All I get is a page that says "No data here" when I go to that address.

Ditto.

You just need to add the new IP 174.121.74.59 to your hosts file until your favorite DNS provider refreshes.

I'd imagine there's something set up so that GETs to the IP address fail. Simply follow the instructions and add the IP address to your hosts file. I tried just now before and after updating /etc/hosts; failed before, worked after.
1415  Economy / Marketplace / Re: mtgox.con and Liberty reserve on: March 03, 2011, 11:44:09 AM
mtgox announced on #bitcoin-otc: "We are moving the mtgox server to a new host. Should be back up soon"
Do you know on which IRC server?
Freenode, presumably. (Haven't checked, I first started looking at bitcoin-otc last night...)
1416  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Official DiabloMiner Thread on: March 02, 2011, 09:14:55 PM
Ok. I'm going to install windows quickly to see if I can get real speeds out of it, then reinstall ubuntu. Tongue
Good luck! I'd be interested to see what the speed difference is between Windows and Ubuntu. Nudge me if you run into difficulties with Ubuntu: I don't promise I'll be able to help but I'll give it a shot.
1417  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Official DiabloMiner Thread on: March 02, 2011, 09:00:08 PM
Which drivers/sdk did you install? the edge ones or ones from ati? which version?

Drivers: 10.11. SDK 2.1. All from ATi. IIRC, the 2.2 SDK wouldn't work, and I'd seen advice here that 2.3 was slower than 2.1 and 2.2 for mining.
1418  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Official DiabloMiner Thread on: March 02, 2011, 08:50:42 PM
You know, 90% of people having bizzaro problems are on Ubuntu. I wonder if Ubuntu is just broken beyond repair.
I'm using Ubuntu (10.10) with your miner, without issue (1x ATI 5870). It's possible I'm just lucky, but I suspect what's happening is that users without Linux experience are selecting Ubuntu as it's got a reputation for being a fairly accessible and "easy" distro. Which it is, but if you're coming from a solely Windows mind-set it's going to be tough, whatever distro you choose (I assume: I find it difficult having to use Windows (no ssh, need to install Cygwin to get grep, everything seems to require the GUI etc), so I assume Windows users will have a similar problem going in the opposite direction...)

I followed this guide when I got my 5870; I don't know if it's still current, but it worked for me a month or so ago.

Why thank you! Good time to mention:

+1 for ribuck.
1420  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Some questionable aspects of Bitcoin on: March 01, 2011, 07:48:19 PM
So basically it boils down to -
When someone who has spent $10 on bitcoins looks at their statement, does it say "BITCOIN $10" or does it say "JOE BLOGS $10" (where Joe Blogs is the guy who now has less bitcoins)?
It depends. If you agree to transfer $10 to Joe Blogs' bank account (in exchange for bitcoins), it'll probably say "Joe Blogs". If you send funds to Joe Blogs' exchange (to fund a purchase of bitcoins), it might say something like "Joe Blogs' Bitcoin Emporium, Ltd". Or, you might need to fund Joe's exchange via PayPal, in which case you'll see "PayPal" on your statement.  Of course, you could just hand Joe a $10 bill, in which nothing will appear on your bank statement ;-)
