I changed my sig. I also posted a short tidbit I wrote onto reddit (although it was downvoted):

Seriously guys.
You shouldn't receive any coins for that.
You changed your sig, so what.
I agree.  What a waste of money.  We are giving $20 to everyone who changes their signature?  WTF?  Mind bogglingly dumb.  It doesn't advance the project one bit when these guys do that.

DUMB giveaway.  At least they are calling it a 'giveaway'

Actually I'm giving out Mastercoins which will probably be worth potentially tens of thousands of dollars if the people I give them to do all they can to promote Mastercoin and take care to simply leave it in their wallet for 6 months to a year.

Of course that is all speculation, but what do you lose by keeping the 0.2 in your wallet and find out if I'm right a year from now?

I would do something to incentivize better efforts...

1522  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: November 15, 2013, 11:29:05 AM
I've slowly learned that almost every single thing I learned in school and university was wrong, or else in some way majorly corrupted. No fields are spared as far as I've seen, besides maybe the practical ones like engineering (there's a market test for wrongness in engineering). Economics of course, but math (pure math, like analysis) and physics and linguistics and logic have severe fundamental issues that have a strong and far-reaching corrupting effect. It's just government funding and the power structure of intellectuals that allows them to equivocate and win by flashiness and the illusion of rigor rather than actual rigor.

There is absolutely no substitute for learning to think for yourself.

Huh, it's not like mathematics, logic and physics are invented after the modern governments grabbing power, or after there is a public school system, at least not those you are expected to understand.

Most of the real madness started about 100 years ago, but yeah actually it's not all due to government influence, some is due to human nature and status games. Government just makes it way worse.

How was school before? How was school when it was ideal?
1523  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANNOUNCE] World’s first bitcoin endowment fund nears $100,000 on: November 15, 2013, 11:17:05 AM
Would this Endowment one day also extend to causes outside the crypto realm?

As you can see from our mission statement, the Lifeboat Foundation's goals extend beyond crypto, so the answer is yes.

Once we have finished matching Brian Cartmell's pledge, we will start looking for causes to fund. At this point we are unsure of how long it will take to match his pledge, so we aren't putting a lot of effort into looking for such causes at this time.

I would like to see the logical steps of progression/accomplishments you envision for Lifeboat going into the future as the bastion of humanity. So you get funding now, 500-1000 BTC... and then what? What if that 500-1000BTC ever turns out to command a significant amount of influence in the economy?

Does Lifeboat ever see itself leading grand schemes?

I know what you mean. The difference sometimes lies in the teacher you have. I've had some great teachers who "get it" and can pass on how to their students, and some who poison students with seemingly valid falsehoods. Some people really get lost in the dogma. I just found out one of the banking law professors at my school (Sarah Jane Hughes) is serving on the Senate panel on Tuesday... I couldn't leave it to chance whether or not she "got it" and emailed her urgently about the scope her decision might make on the US and that I very much need to share my thoughts with her, as a fellow Hoosier. Let's see...

But I love neuroscience so much...I wouldn't know where else I could get my foot in the door in regards to that subject. And at least my professors make a point to tell us that the assumptions that neuroscience bases itself upon are still so preliminary it changes month to month upon new revelations. I love that. Now, as for my econ minor, I don't even know if I want to finish it simply because it's so inane and I see what it creates (see: Andrew Huszar: Confessions of a Quantitative Easer). That game theory course in a year makes me think it will be worth it though. Honestly, I just take academics with a grain of salt, and take what I can from it if it fits in to my paradigm.

But all I want to do upon graduation is to go out into isolation and read for awhile, reset a little bit, Walden style. I probably should after I finish this project I'm working on.

With CoinSetter mixing their order pool in with BitStamp, does that mean BFX will have access to CoinSetter's order books and vice versa as well?

Hi , I made a website to introduce Mastercoin  : http://www.xiaoxiaohuahua.com/
You can check it.

Perhaps you can translate the article instead of directly copy and pasting Vitalik Buterin's article onto your website?

Hello, I was wondering, if you had all the wealth you needed, what would you start doing?

From our Bitcoin Endowment Fund page:

"Once we have matched Brian Cartmell's 500 BTC pledge, the Lifeboat Foundation will be interested in funding cryptography-related projects as a 1984-like world would not only be unpleasant but could give the government the power to do terrible things that could even become existential threats."

Any specific candidates?

Would this Endowment one day also extend to causes outside the crypto realm? This is what I'm referring to when I asked you the hypothetical.

1529  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MasterCoin: New Protocol Layer Starting From “The Exodus Address” on: November 15, 2013, 09:37:07 AM
I don't think Mastercoin is big enough to find blocks. If we don't find blocks the whole process is meaningless.

I possibly could get us a few THs/s, depends. I don't know how long that would find blocks though.

Luckily we got calculators  Grin

It probably wouldn't break even, that I'm sure of.

I don't know how to calculate probability of x TH/s finding a block, and at what point P would no longer be statistically viable to find blocks while mining privately.

It's a surreal thing to see journalists doubting the validity of reality, instead or questioning their own premises.

Only serves to confirm that they're actually doing a job that promotes various agendas to create reality, not to inform us about what the current reality is. Naughty, naughty journalists.

A chilling realization.
1532  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MASTERCOIN VS BITCOIN - First Speculation thread ever on: November 15, 2013, 02:15:13 AM
move this thread to alt coin area, please.

+1

It's a protocol layer that operates leveraging the power of the Bitcoin blockchain, thus is directly tied into the Bitcoin network. I first heard about mastercoins from adamstgBit in the mtgox wall thread early in August.

To develop some basic literacy on exchange rate issues and managed currencies, I suggest that everyone go through this series of web lectures on "Foreign Exchange Markets and the Balance of Payments." When he says Euro, you say MastercoinEuro and when he says swiss franc, you should say mastercoin.

I know it sounds a little pedantic to recommend this, but seriously you 100% need to know this stuff.

I, for one, appreciate it Smiley Ever learning

Do you remember the verse in the Bible, they will toss their gold and silver into the streets?

For me at this time, it is much more important to have my freedom than to have wealth that makes me a marked man by society.

With my freedom, I can do amazing new technology. I need almost no wealth, just a computer, the internet, and my brain.

And with the freedom my wealth will afford me,  I can help build a better world where wealth is irrelevant.

Concrete details please?

Because I've heard that nonsense many times and it never works out once we discuss the details. It is always some uneconomic delusion you are feeding yourself.

Tell me how? Enlighten me.

By not seeing life with your negative attitude.

But to be honest, I don't know yet, I'm only 21, and I'm not at that stage in my life. Right now I'm learning. Economically speaking, it should be a simple matter of investing in things that will return more energy than that put in to create such an energy harvester. Who knows, maybe a solar harvester in orbit that can focus energy here, or I can fund research into asteroid mining. Perhaps I can work in neuroscience and help advance AI to the point that we can solve the problems we face today with greater ease.

What are you doing to make this place a better place?

As I expected the usual perpetual motion delusions. Thanks for being honest.

You will soon see what I am doing. And I really need to stop talking.

So try to be fair if I am not around here to defend myself tit-for-tat.

My third sentence and multiple usage of the word "harvester" indicated that I am not referring to "perpetual energy", but energy from the sun. The source of >99% our energy.

Sending dev MSC to you guys is a bit controversial at the previously quoted number. The board is currently discussing this, since at current prices the 1500 MSC we discussed sending earlier would be worth ~$100k, which is stupidly out of proportion with the amount of work involved with recognizing dev MSC.

I really need to get out of the habit of quoting prices in MSC. I'm guessing the actual send will be closer to the value it had when I first mentioned this. Something like $10k worth of MSC, if I recall correctly. This is currently under discussion.

I hope you guys weren't spending money in anticipation of a windfall!

This change is my fault (for quoting prices in MSC), and I apologize.

hahah no problem. No reason to supply us with 100k for something that should take a day at most Wink

I know you are busy but could you make a decision on https://github.com/mastercoin-MSC/spec/pull/1 ? It doesn't matter either way but a decision needs to be made so we can move on. I'm kinda waiting on the outcome at the moment Smiley

Actually, we're taking this very seriously, because we don't want to be seen as going back on what we said. We may actually still do it at that higher price, which would be a HUGE payday for you guys, and would make us all very happy. Sorry for the uncertainty. This is still being hashed out and not everybody on the board has weighed in yet.

Regarding the pull request, sorry - I need to figure out how to turn on email notifications for github discussions. I'm sure it's trivial.

I've read through the discussion, and I'm going to merge this pull request once I figure out how to deal with the conflicts.

Consider very carefully how you choose to quote payouts in the future. This reflects badly in many ways.

I agree, this was a tiny deliberation that JR wanted to let the board and the community know of so that we could form a supported opinion before making a move (transparency!), but we realize that even that deliberation would reflect poorly. It was decided that we follow through with our word, of course, within a few messages' exchange.

I suggested to the board we do hybrid payouts so that we could hedge against future volatility like what we're experiencing and so that situations like this don't occur again.
Something like "accomplish this and get 10BTC + $10000 (in BTC or MSC at time of completion)"
