Bitstamp's Position:

"We would like to take this opportunity to let you know our plans for the upcoming weeks as we navigate any potential disruptions on the Bitcoin (BTC) network. As always, our focus will continue to be on the safety of your funds. In the event of a User Activated Hard Fork (UAHF) on 1 August or thereafter, it is important to clarify that Bitstamp would not be in a position to support Bitcoin Cash (BCC), the coin associated with the Bitcoin Cash proposal. In Bitstamp's view, BCC is an alt-coin and the decision to list BCC tokens remains at our sole discretion at all times.

If Bitstamp chooses to list BCC, we would decide at our own discretion on what course of action to take with balances deriving from the hard fork. BCC would also be subject to the same due diligence processes as for any other alt-coin, which requires time and careful planning. For these reason, Bitstamp is not in a position to support BCC, nor will Bitstamp be liable for any BCC sent to Bitstamp.

As always, the safety of your funds remains our number one priority. To this end, as a security precaution, we will be disabling bitcoin deposits and withdrawals on 31 July 2017 at 23:00 hrs UTC to ensure that all BTC funds stored at Bitstamp remain secure. Trading will remain unaffected throughout. Deposits and withdrawals will be resumed only when we deem it safe and prudent to do so.

We will leave it to you to decide whether to withdraw your BTC funds from Bitstamp prior to this cut-off date if you would like to access BCC or any other hard fork, and Bitstamp shall not be held liable for any consequences of that decision, from neither a financial, operational nor regulatory standpoint.

To be clear, Bitstamp has no favoured outcome to the resolution of the bitcoin scaling issue. Our sole focus is on you and your best interests. As such, we are continuing to monitor developments closely. Please check our Twitter feed, Facebook page and website for the latest news, updates and developments.

Best,

The Bitstamp team"

If you bought close to the weekly 20 MA good for you! If the ATH is taken out here are some targets to take some profits at. The 1.618 Fibonacci extension is often more accurate than the 2.618.

Can someone repost that graph of 1.68 fibo at 3600 and 2.68 at plus 4k?. I canīt find it, I think I saw it here

If I had any friends I would tell them about bitcoin for sure.

Don't worry, soon - if Bitcoin moons, you will be able to buy some! Wink

 @ microgoosens:

so AGAIN a proposal

the person closest by new ATH guess to recieve 0.25 BTC  paid direct Wink Wink Wink

come start shooting

12th December.  Hope it's a lot sooner, but August seems too good to be true.

Been away and I note you ask for 'reasons' justifying the choice in your recent posts, microgoosens! So:

I just felt after years of waiting, all this sorting out in a few days was not possible.  I figured at least three months before the fork issue was finally sorted and that the Segwit lockin was already going to be priced in before August 1st, but not by quite breaking ATH. That, coupled with looking back at 2013 made me think the likely new ATH would be late and only be realised in the Christmas run-up.

1565  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: July 16, 2017, 11:12:19 PM

Within a few months I would expect to clearly see which are the nonsense projects. Unfortunately, by then virtually all value will have evaporated from them. It is hard to see how there could be more than a handful of winners.

I am not sure it will happen in months.  We are still not able to see which cryptyos will actually end up being used.  Yes we have speculation about developments in one coin or another being potentially useful - even belief it will be - but not serious adoption or proven mass utility, yet.  So outsiders cannot tell which coins are the real winners, yet.  That poster had Dash on it. Keep the pic chaps - in the future it will be a giggle.  Right now the even those of the masses that understand what that poster is even advertising can't see the difference between the ones that are decent and ones that aren't and in truth we don't know for sure either.  When they see utility, beyond what is currently mostly still speculation, then things will change.

Once actual real world usage (and I don't count facilitating ICO launches for 'other' new coins) then some coins will take the lead.  Then many stragglers will die more quickly as it is apparent they cannot keep up, but there still we be a myriad of coins. There will be copies, adaptations, gimmicks and new ideas for a while yet, many with money behind them, but it is still early.

A shake out is not here yet.  But the battle is fierce and there will be victors. Very few, yes.  But a mass extinction is not happening yet IMHO.
1566  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 15, 2017, 11:21:29 AM

If you do have fiat, set sub 2000 bids up.  I did a week ago.

Can't see it holding all the way to the 1st at this rate whatever happens.  And if Segwit signalling doesn't look close at the end of the month it will get messier still; you may be looking at today's price with a wistful nostalgic sigh.
You think that the current movements are entirely related to Segwit and BIP 148 / Segwit2x?

Not entirely, no. There are technicals at play as well as an unsustainable bubble in alts (adding fuel) that had to at least consolidate if not end in tears.  So, a downturn after a nearly 3K high was probably inevitable for all sorts of reasons.

However, the Bitcoin scaling scrap nearing civil war and potential fork etc. does add uncertainty. You must admit a potential fork is hardly going to inspire any confidence, especially in a market that has apparently peaked right now.

I hope it is an anticlimax - but talk of taking BTC off exchange and fear of the uncertain are hardly 'nothing'.  You can argue it's an excuse, but given what *might* happen, will you be surprised if Bitcoin flails around trying to discover a price over the next few weeks?

You have often (recently) argued BTC is not volatile.  I disagree with this.  I sold a fair few at a decent time to do so (it turns out) and I am still not buying back in yet.  The market is jittery and the scaling stuff is not helping at all and will be the focus of what happens, if not the whole reason.

Note:  been away, and about to head off again to where it's light until midnight. However, I'm very happy with the WO survival...  and congrats to infofront for being brave enough to take on the thread. Right man for the job IMHO.
1568  Other / Meta / Re: Wall Observer new ownership on: July 08, 2017, 05:14:20 AM

  I voted for Lauda.

That was obvious.

It has everything to do with free speech and also everything to do with order.  Right now I can't exercise any form of speech in the WO thread because it is locked.  The newly elected moderator is the first step to getting the thread unlocked.  Also, I like a modicum of order; it makes the topic easier to follow.

It was locked because it did not have a moderator at all.

I like that when I get a notification of activity in a thread I follow that it will contain something topical and worthy of my time rather than a Nazi woman wearing Bitcoin symbol arm band and sporting flashing green lights for breasts.  It's not funny, not entertaining, not offensive to me personally but mainly it's not topical.  Then other people want to weigh in on that off-topic post with their own critiques, criticisms, shaming and various other expressions of "free speech" and the thread goes to shit.

Feel free to exercise your free speech by creating a new thread in the society section about whatever the hell you want and then let people decide whether they care to waste their time in there.  Perhaps you don't realize the reason the thread was locked in the first place.  It's those "free speech" off topic posts that created the censorship - we're still free to make our posts just not in the WO thread because it was "out of control".  It became a headache for the administrator of this board; the easiest thing for him to do would be to leave it locked.  This should lead any sane individual to realize that the WO thread WAS full of garbage AND idiots.

If you want free speech, put on placard and dance around in the streets - or - if you want free speech in here, open a new thread with your off-topic rants.  When I say "you" I'm talking to all those idiots who caused the complaints that led to the WO thread being locked in the first place.  This is not the end of the problem; it's a second chance and from what I see in this thread, we may be destined to repeat the same mistake.  Free speech doesn't mean you get to say whatever you want and there are no consequences - it only means the government can't penalize you for saying it.

So you want free speech, but you want it controlled? You believe in 'order'.  OK, I see.

Maybe it was 'full of garbage and idiots', maybe that is an exaggeration.  Maybe it was tiresome at times, maybe that disorder was part of its allure.

However, candidates displaying a level of utter contempt for the WO by saying it was 'full of garbage AND idiots' are unlikely to find it is the best way to get people to vote for them to be its moderator.

If btc keeps wandering between 2500 and 2600 until 1 August, I expect market making ROI to go up ... a lot.

What are your thoughts on what will happen post August 1st, Aminorex?
1570  Other / Meta / Re: Wall Observer new ownership on: July 06, 2017, 11:24:04 AM
wait, why are we going nuts in a month? did i miss something huge, again?

Seriously? The HAPPENING!!!

...the what now?

edit: oh god, you mean the segwit2x deadline of august 1... right.

Yep... and UASF, and... years waiting for a single moment like that. (I hope everything will go smooth though).

I am kind of questioning whether we are going to be able to identify any particular moment with any kind of preciseness...

for example, a moment in which we are assured that segwit is locked in because there are likely going to be some insiders who know way ahead of time about the inevitability of the dynamics to cause the price to move upwardly long before the mere mortals come to the realization that it REALLY IS LOCKED in....

Maybe I am being too pessimistic? or buying too much into the disparity of information conspiracies?

I was closely following the Litecoin segwit signaling and activation process. Yes, there is a moment in which it will be clear that even if all of them stop signaling there are already enough signaled blocks to lock it at the end of the period. Of course, you can assume way sooner that locking won't be stopped with a 95-95% chance of being right.

I do expect that miners play a little with their hashrate/signaling as they did with Litecoin though. And as they are actually doing right now with Bitcoin (see coindance).

It will be a very fun and interesting process to watch (and trade) in real time.... and talk about it in our reopened WO Smiley

P.S.: Hopefully with an owner/moderator that allows references to altcoins for comparison (such as Litecoin in this specific case).

Of course it's relevant.  Mention of alts never really needed policing, the thread members tend to flame it in any case.

The WO always veered off-topic, it was part of its appeal.  But the crowd all piled in to check which way the wind was blowing when there was action.  It was always a great barometer of sentiment, if not THE barometer of sentiment in crypto.

Such was (and hopefully will continue to be) its value.
1571  Other / Meta / Re: Wall Observer new ownership on: July 06, 2017, 11:19:08 AM

I do not.  When he was a Mod, I asked Lauda why posts I had written were deletd and r0ach's anti-semitic hate posts were untouched on the same page.

He did not answer.

For me intolerance to the point of advocating genocide and the killing of millions of people is NOT really ok.  It's kind a red line issue.

So in the interests of an open debate, what is your position Lauda? Do you just crave the power? Can you tell us if you're a light touch, laissez-faire type, or a totalitarian?
I had reported roach to be banned at least once. Infinitely deleting his reports from that position was futile as long as the senior moderation/administration wasn't going to do anything about it. In the end, he was never banned. Rule wise, I think no altcoin talk and no anti-semitic hate stuff (et. al.) is fair and not too restrictive. I like the speculation thread, at times, and I occasionally drop by to post (which was getting increasingly harder and frustrating with the shitcoin spam in there). I am open to suggestions though.
I explicitly remember debating whether I should remove the old poll from that thread, but as a moderator I couldn't create new ones (thus I never followed up on this idea).

I don't want anyone banned, just totally OTT racist hatred frowned upon and removed if it's extreme.

I will take you at your word you did your best, you may well have - thanks for addressing this.

I am afraid my vote has gone elsewhere, but I am glad you have entered the debate on style and lightness of touch - people do want to know.

1572  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer: BTC/USD Price Tracking and Discussion 2.0 (Unmoderated) on: July 05, 2017, 10:19:26 PM
Hey JJG, we all know who deletes my posts don't we now!! I'll give you a clue, it's not OP of this WO Thread!

So get on the original voting thread and vote for him - or Lauda wins it.

It's a fix - go spoil it by voting - there is ONE vote in it!

Occasional promotion of fascism is kind of OK?

Ok, laissez-faire will win out, which is a plus point - but when I totally kick off, will I also not be deleted when I tell this psychopath who lives in his mother's basement dreaming of the death of the jews to go fuck himself?

Wink

That actually sounds fair...

Maybe you two will bond with the passing of time! Heal, mend wounds together!!!  Cheesy  Cheesy

*edit:   And then peace was restored to the kingdom! They became friends and then they had a plenty bunch of children and the world was a better place! The End!!!  Cheesy  Cheesy

Not that likely, I am afraid. The world will only be a better place when the promotion of racism, hate, murder and genocide is not 'OK'

I do this for a living... and I need to make you think! ... So... in opinion of some... the concept of "peace & prosperity" are ideal and will probably happen. BUT!!!! ... The thing is that imagine a world after 300-400 years of no violence or any kind of rebellion... Do you consider that a healthy society?? Because if a breakaway civilization from the past or an encounter with another alien race (just a small rogue colony might be enough)... How do you think the reaction of those 'vegetable minded' people will be?? Smiley

So the actual problem that many don't understand is that you need to integrate "the promotion of racism, hate, murder and genocide is not 'OK' " ... into any future system that we have!   Wink

*edit:  The concept of "Peace" alone, by itself.. cannot stand the trial & error of time! Because its flawed! And you need constant balance! Smiley

You don't need to worry, I can think without help.  And I am not thinking about 300 years ahead, or thinking there will be 'peace' either.  There won't. Not in our lifetimes.

I am thinking a little more short term: who will keep the WO going as I want to hope it can?

Meanwhile, I might take on a few neo-nazis that crawl out from under the stinking sludge as I pass along - but that is just because I have a teeny-weeny problem with the advocation of mass murder of men, women and children upon racial grounds.

Maybe that makes me weird.  But I am unable to respond differently.  I happen to stupidly believe all human life is valuable and everyone has a right to live unchained.  It is part of why I am into Bitcoin and the personal freedom it offers - whatever religion, or skin colour.

Can we post train pictures and stuff when our candidates go in the lead?

In a few days we will have WO again, maybe it is good to start recovering old habits in the meantime.

Maybe - but, my freind - my preferred candidates aren't winning Wink

And I ain't standing - so I want to see some mettle from those who are.   With the right mod, goodness and joy will reign.  With the wrong one, I lose my favourite thead.

Sorry. It matters.

Yep, it matters. We all have some preferred candidates, that's ok. The best owner of WO would be someone that most of the time we wouldn't even notice he is doing his "job" while he is doing it perfectly.

Anyway,  I have finallly voted for: lightfoot (my initial choice), arklan, Erkalis, infofront (he is doing a great job on his forked WO) and empowering (this guy sounds like a great Adam's sucessor)... So I have some serious chances that my "preferred" candidate wins Smiley

I voted similarly, but I am warming to Empowering, too - he is sounding like an advocate of tolerance. He even might be fun, too.

Lauda is the dark horse - but he has not spoken of his ethos, only indicated he wants the role.

In my experience those who really seek power are often the ones who should never be granted it.

You are not Adam - OK, who could be?  Fair enough.  But what are you, Lauda?

The fact that he presents the other side of the coin is exactly the reason why we should keep people like R0ach! ... Because you can show them, point them with a finger and given as an anti-example!!! ... The world needs fucking bad guys to be in a perpetuum state of equilibrium! Balance is needed! Smiley

*edit(1):  So... don't ignore the other side of the coin!!! If danger and bad sh!t exists... you don't need to ignore it and suppress it!!! Deal with it!!! Smiley

*edit(2): People need to be aware so they can draw up their own conclusions!!! Smiley

The only trouble is, when genocide happens, it's sort of a bit late to form an opinion.  It tends to need a war to sort it out if you let it go.

See:  History.

Will you publish who voted for who again? I am not really familiar with some of these names to vote for them. I had hoped Jimbo would be a part of it.

I will declare a poll winner by considering who voted what, not just by counting votes.
How would you handle a situation with a large number of new accounts voting? The decision to consider 'who' voted is a step in the right direction, but I'm wondering how you would execute it if someone were to be leading by a large margin with e.g. such votes.

Lauda...

Beat it you tyrant... you kept deleting R0aches natzi posts... and that guy is pure gold entertainment!!! Smiley ... Do you think people come to these posts for speculation?? You are dead wrong!!! They come for entertainment!!! Smiley ... No one care who said what, when or maybe. Because 90% of the people with money from these posts don't listen to each other anyway! So its just simple chit chat between millionaires and billionaires that like to mock each other!!! Smiley

No matter who the moderator ends up being, I hope posts like R0ach's are allowed to stand. The thread will not be the same without the occasional Hitler/anti-jew meme pictures scattered about.

1580  Other / Meta / Re: What to do with the wall observer thread? on: July 04, 2017, 07:09:02 AM

It's not technically possible to have more than one moderator of a thread, or to apply additional posting restrictions to the thread, or to prevent posts from counting in that thread, unless I create a new section for it.

I'm sure any voting would end up picking a decent candidate that would be in touch with thread culture, and if that person believes s/he needs help in the thread, s/he can elicit such help - even though it seems that there may be some inability to give actual powers to anyone beyond the owner of the thread, unless the owner of the thread shared his/her log-in credentials or a administrative "fake" account was created for such persons and the password only known by the elected moderator(s).

I am not sure if there should be concerns about getting stuck with a tyrant, because we would be voting for the person, but if there is a feeling to allow for a continued quasi-democratic process, we may want to agree to 1 year terms or something reasonable like that.

... a succession plan is a worthwhile thought. Perhaps it could be TheDreadPirateRoberts model where the current mod chooses his successor and simply hands over the WO admin account keys to the next DreadPirateRoberts when they are over it?

In fact it would be kind of cool if the WO admin had an account name like DreadPirateRoberts or variant ...  Grin ... but what should we call the monkey then?

I don't really disagree with the idea - but a problem in a quasi-anonymous forum is that an actual appointment process might not be as fair as just having either a periodic vote (such as every year) or just having theymos reassign the thread under his own discretion.  I imagine that Theymos is only flexible so long as we seem to be working matters out - but as soon as our decentralized bullshit turns into a bunch of in-fighting that resembles the scaling debate, then he probably experiences less healthy inclinations to capital punish the whole situation within the discretion of ownership.

By the way, Marcus, I thought that at one point your name was in the running?.. or maybe at some point you bowed out? It seemed at one point, someone made the argument that anyone who had started a competing WO thread had implicitly expressed interest in moderating the original WO thread?

He declared he was not available:

.....

NB: I'm not available to mod WO ... but I think you need to get it sorted out quickly, it's not that big of deal if you enforce those two simple rules above you could even put a drunk and his monkey in charge.  Cheesy

And all the 'alt threads' were invited to put candidates forward - even rpietila's.

Those who wanted to throw their hats in have had ample chance.

Now it's time to narrow it down to one.

We must wait to see if Theymos will put up a new poll, unless he expects us to have a show of hands, of course.
