161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why POW is dead. on: November 13, 2014, 05:54:31 PM
POW is only evolving - see Myriadcoin.

It always amazes me that PoW fanboys never give a flying f*ck about Myriadcoin. I mean if they truely believed in PoW, they would be supporting Myriadcoin, because it's the most secure of all PoW cryptos, but no, all they do is care about their mining profits, that's why PoW is dead, because miners dump most of what they mine, and that's not going to change.

Are there any PoS coins without dev controlled checkpoints yet?

NXT has automatic rolling checkpoints, 720 blocks deep, controlled by software ("automatic rolling"), called blockchain re-org mechanism.

Thanks for the reply, could you elaborate on how the checkpoints are 'controlled by software'? Is this some sort of consensus amongst nodes to agree the block 720 blocks ago can never be replaced even in a longer chain? Also out of interest how much time does it take to produce 720 blocks and many blocks are staking coins locked for?

Yeah, it's consensus among nodes. More details in the whitepapers:
https://nxtforum.org/general-discussion/nxt-papers-whitepapers-academic-and-economic/
720 blocks on average is about 20 hours.

This thread should be made sticky for all noobs in the alt section.
164  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PoS is far inferior to PoW - why are so many people advocating switching to PoS on: November 13, 2014, 04:08:20 PM
A bank such a JP Morgan with a FPGA super computer can conceivably do it (without figuring out how many operations are actually required).

I wouldn't be wrong to suppose no math will follow to back this statement, would I?
165  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bear market to continue another 12 months on: November 13, 2014, 03:13:30 PM
bull coming back! Cheesy

It's very unlikely, just a correction of the bear market, like the one back in May-June, $500 will not be conquered this year.
166  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin goes down = alts go down, Bitcoin goes up = alts go down on: November 13, 2014, 01:39:02 PM
If you check their USD price, many of the Top 10 alts are holding steady when Bitcoin goes up. They only go down relative to Bitcoin, because speculator wannabe sheep run to Bitcoin thinking it's a safe haven. But the long-term trend for BTC/USD is still down, the miners fiat leak didn't go anywhere, and Bitcoin design flaws are still there.

Well, I really don't get the concept of PoS. Doesn't that violate Godel's Incompleteness Theorem...? How can a system possibly secure itself? I think it's a road to centralization.

So many words, Spoetnik. But at the end of the day everything is a pyramid. In every market, regulated or not, assets grow as long as there are buyers. As soon as you run of buyers, the asset drops. Regulations don't add anything to this, need proof? See the dotcom boom of the 90s. Or real estate boom and bust of the 2000s. Many people got burned and lost their shirts. You talk too many words, but all you mean is "stay out of the free market, because you can get hurt". Are you from the gubermint to save us, do you advise to purchase gubermint bonds?
172  Economy / Speculation / Re: Analysis never ends on: November 12, 2014, 08:01:40 PM
Bull trap? Miners haven't had time to react yet to start dumping?
173  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bear market to continue another 12 months on: November 12, 2014, 06:35:04 PM
Spoetnik,

so what do you advise exactly, get out of alts into Bitcoin? Bitcoin to da moon? Let's see if this is a dead-cat bounce for Bitcoin and a bull trap.
174  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PoS is far inferior to PoW - why are so many people advocating switching to PoS on: November 12, 2014, 05:07:12 PM
You just have to buy 51% of the currency or track down majority of stakeholders and compromise their private keys. Much cost free

lots of people seem to believe this (I think it's even mentioned in Sunny King's PPC paper), but it's not accurate: you need 51% of the actively staking coin-age. That's much, much, less than 51% of the currency.
I had some ideas to help fix this, I'm working on it.

Peercoin PoS is not the same as NXT PoS, the latter doesn't use coin-age.

I have told you around this forum sooooo many times i think your delusional OP

you are a champion of steadfast optimism around here endlessly no matter how bad the signs are.
I think you are lying to yourself because your bag holding Altcoins simple as that.
and in turn spoon feeding the whole scene crap to get more guys involved.

There are two options:
a) get into Bitcoin = get out of alts
b) get into fiat = get out of alts and out of Bitcoin

I am cautiously optimistic and only recommend what I have at least some faith in, based on fundamentals. Oh, and I realistically think the bear market will go on for another 12 months, how is that not good for the scene?

Spoetnik, what is your recommendation for crypto investors in 1-2 sentences for the next few months?
176  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto leavers club on: November 12, 2014, 10:56:43 AM
The sooner all pussies run away, the sooner the market recovers. Run, pussies, run!
177  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: XMR baghodler reporting in- the uncensored version on: November 12, 2014, 08:09:59 AM
What else did you guys expect of Monero, most PoW cryptos are inflationary.

Whatever coin is able to curb inflation sooner than others, especially in a bear market we're in now which is to go on another 12 months, can ensure the demand stays equal to or above supply, providing support to the price.

The other PoW coins will keep sinking, and by next November many that had prospects in 2014 will be forgotten.

Out of all PoW coins the only one that curbs its inflation rate sooner than others is Dogecoin (in 2 months to be exact), but don't believe me, check the inflation figures.

I could understand if you guys started to invest in Monero 7-8 months ago when the bear market hadn't been confirmed yet, and optimism was high, but how can anyone still not see what's coming is truely beyond my understanding.

I know cryptos are hard to predict, but when the trend is confirmed, your common sense should prevail or you risk losing your shirt.
178  Economy / Speculation / Re: I was wrong on: November 12, 2014, 07:54:02 AM
Maybe you weren't wrong after all, it should still test the low of 1 month ago at $300 or below.

180  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Should I trust Bter? on: November 12, 2014, 07:15:41 AM
You shouldn't trust ANY centralized exchange to store your coins, none of them. If you do, you're asking for trouble. Having said that, Bter is ok for trading, so far haven't had any issues with them that weren't resolved in a timely manner, which has been a pleasant experience compared to some others *cough* Cryptsy *cough*.

Thing is, you *effectively* still need somewhat centralized exchanges as of now. And I guess we'll be stuck with them for the time being. And I gotta say: I prefer a rather trustworthy centralized exchange to some half-baked decentralized solution no one knows how to use!

You need them to make trades, but you don't need them to store coins. Try to limit the time the coins stay at any centralized platform to a few hours at the longest and there is at least a 90% chance you won't lose them due to frauds and scams.
