161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: February 01, 2014, 11:35:16 PM
Hi,

Need more guidance on how to actually use the bet/feed system.

What I think I'm trying to do:
Enter a bet from 1Fz5idgemYfsszRMmaQNd2Anvm2JytAoU (my XCP account) to feed 1QBPsB2ea61vWTNA9nGUhaHqPQB4SXF4fN (super bowl feed) to bet 1 XCP that Denver (2) will win at or before block 290000 (random estimate in future).

What I entered:

C:\counterpartyd>python counterpartyd.py bet --from 1Fz5idgemYfsszRMmaQNd2Anvm2J
ytAoU --feed-address 1QBPsB2ea61vWTNA9nGUhaHqPQB4SXF4fN --bet-type Equal --deadl
ine 290000 --wager 1 --counterwager 1 --target-value 2 --expiration 2
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "counterpartyd.py", line 564, in <module>
    deadline = round(datetime.timestamp(dateutil.parser.parse(args.deadline)))
AttributeError: type object 'datetime.datetime' has no attribute 'timestamp'

Don't know what to put in expiration because anything is giving me errors.
162  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: February 01, 2014, 10:24:22 PM
I am trying to do a broadcast but the command-line argument parser seems to be having difficulty with spaces in the --text argument.

My command:

counterpartyd broadcast --from 1LX3cVsKDBuAP19ngnqvAzMXDcWpwdjVgY --text "Super Bowl Bet Feed: 0=Incomplete 1=Seattle Win 2=Denver Win" --value 0 --fee-multiplier 0

Result:

counterpartyd: error: unrecognized arguments: Bowl Bet Feed: 0=Incomplete 1=Seattle Win 2=Denver Win

What's the format for the text argument?

EDIT: Solved. You need to put another set of quotes around the text to deal with the spaces:

for example instead of --text="Super Bowl" you use --text="'Super Bowl'"

Fun, I'll try to enter a bet now.
163  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Voting has started! Here are my Quark logo designs on: February 01, 2014, 10:01:13 PM
I've no opinion towards quark ... but that is some good branding. The color palette (terra, retro-tech) absolutely works.

My vote goes out to the 2nd or 3rd ones. First one could work, but scaling at low res might be tricky unless the thickness is enlarged a bit.

The physical coins are absolutely outstanding.

164  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to safely move wallets? the blockchains are filling up one hard drive... on: January 31, 2014, 11:31:52 PM
I simply move the files, then symlink the files from the new hard drive to the old.

Unix can do this with "ln -s", or for windows, http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html

I'd appreciate someone answering the following 3 questions:

1) In the XCP blockscan balances the highest address has 6000+ XCP. How is it possible if there can be no more than 1BTC per address burned and the maximum reward was 1500XCP per 1BTC?

2) As to the burn instructions using blockchain.info: just to make sure I understood: say I want to burn 1BTC- is it recommended to open a brand new address with 1BTC and send to the XCP address? and than minus the fee the actual burn will be 0.999BTC for whatever XCP?

3) Lastly, what happens after the last block is burned? will the XCP balances sent to the address from which the BTC came? (I understand that it is the same as BTC as far as the blockchain.info is concerned? in other words-- how will an īnvestor receive his XCP?

Thank you in advance.

[1] One can send XCP now, so the individuals with more than 1500+ just consolidated multiple burns into one address.
[2] That's true. If you want to burn the full 1BTC you should start with an address with 1.0001 BTC. Then send the 1 BTC (plus the 0.0001 miners fee) to the address - 1CounterpartyXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXUWLpVr. Just take your time and follow the instructions exactly.
[3] The XCP are almost immediately attributed to the BTC addresses from which they came. The individuals in point [1] have already received their XCP and are sending/spending them already.
As for answer 3 above: I burned a BTC successfully a couple of hours ago and it shows on the burned log with a confirmation for 1000+ XCP. How did those that unified their XCPs do it? (if someone can unite few addresses with XCP it means that the balance should show within his address. so i understand. is there an XCP wallet?

Send XCP from an address with XCP burned to another address. This has been explained mutliple times (should probably have a FAQ on this, devs; I'll write one if need be)

167  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol - Bounties? After the Burn? on: January 30, 2014, 07:52:52 PM
Counterparty peeps.

I heard about Counterparty on Coindesk.  I am looking to understand what are the big needs for this protocol as it is launched.

I am interested in helping to organize community and devteam bounties so that once the burn period ends, there will be ways to get more participation to building solutions for this awesome idea.  Are there community members currently already helping organize bounties for various new or high-demand features?

I'm new so please go easy on me, but I definitely want to be helpful. Yes, I have burn some moneys already

Awesome, we really appreciate the initiative. becherovka is starting to organize things at the bounty level starting shortly here. Perhaps you and he could work together on this. I'll let him either comment on this thread, or you guys can get in touch via PM.

We also just put up a wiki on the counterparty.co site (I have to finish setting up the permissions for it).  If there are any community members that want to help make content for the wiki, feel free to contact cityglut (solid writing skills would be a must here, obviously).

I might make a suggestion:

Counterparty (and similar projects) offer entirely new functionality to the Bitcoin system. As is evident from the cryptocurrency hearings in New York this week it is apparent that regulators and other financial types have had their minds blown by the basic functionality of Bitcoin, let alone the more advanced features.

They didn't even know how to react to the Colored Coins concept when Charles Lee of Litecoin brought it up. I can only imagine how they would have reacted if someone mentioned the concept of a decentralised exchange to them.

On that note, I feel that the world needs to see examples of what Counterparty can do. Think of it as a technological showcase of case studies. Each one consisting of taking ideas from conception to execution.

Case study 1: Mike wants to set up a new business but has no money. Instead of going to a bank for a loan he decides to utilise Bitcoin/Counterparty for everything from crowd-funding to share issuance and dividend allocation etc. No middlemen!

Case study 2: Jennifer wants to sell her home. Instead of going down the traditional avenues she decides to utilise Bitcoin/Counterparty for everything from payment to referencing her house deeds (Colored Coins/notary) etc. No middlemen!

Etc, etc.

This Dropbox video is a great example of what I am talking about - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFb0NaeRmdg

Ultimately, if people realise what you can actually do with Counterparty, they will use it.

This is a great suggestion. I will be adding use-cases to the wiki.

For the sake of organization, I recommend that use-cases regarding assets and dividends be discussed at the thread I created for that purpose:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=424439.0

People love videos. That sort of thing could easily be done in a "What is Bitcoin" video kind of format.
168  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Logo, art, posters and other coin stuff. Why so shitty? on: January 30, 2014, 07:28:08 PM
Hey, I'm trying to do my best with making acceptable logos/art. (nanotokens, ixcoin, XCP). There are also some undeniably well designed things out there (two that come up mind - worldcoin, NXT (say what you want, but they have the aesthetics down)).
169  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: January 30, 2014, 07:17:19 PM

For colors, I'm thinking dark/less saturated (appropriate for a financial instrument), and contrasting (buy/sell, long/short, bull/bear).

Size testing:

Up to 32x32 still readable. May need to up thickness a bit on small sizes.

Other stuff:

Friction,

Who changed the logos on the website?

Did we not vote on the best logos, why are they altered or not being displayed?  Who's the rebel?

The logo at the top looks way too big.  And all the logos look odd without the circle (you know, like the coins we voted for, circles like a coin since this is a digital coin) and the top colors and coins voted on are not all displayed.

It would be nice if we voted on something that it would show in the end product.

Cause the way you had it done, friction, it looked nicer except for the stretched logo at the top.

I hate to bitch at people pitching in but we do have to all be on the same page here and it's clear as to what logos are preferred by all the people here.

Thanks.

I did the initial changes. Still tweaking.

Right now until we get a finalized count of how many people like what logo, I can't really make design decisions. Also, it doesn't make sense to have more than one logo of the coin up there anyways, which is why I plan to ditch the lower section in the future and replace it with icons that actually represent the option (e.g. a package for the download page, a question mark for the FAQ, etc.

Going to make the top smaller now, though

Jimhsu is handling the graphics and theme of the site.  I trust that he will do a good job.

Feel free to do what you feel best.

More design notes:

When choosing a logo, it has to fit a defined motif. The biggest problem I have with #1 (orange on black) is despite that it looks great by itself, the entire site has to be designed around it. More troublingly, it's not complementary with any of the other designs from a design standpoint; by using 2 or more incompatible designs, you might as well be making 2 different coins.

The set of (Red logo/12/23) is, however, complementary and seems to have the most popular support overall (7+7+5 votes); hence why I'm trying to design around it. It fits within the gestalt of the existing site; it's compatible with a range of reproduction formats, from stenciled (Red/23) to dual color (12) to black and white prints (23); it's simple and modernistic, which a) fits within current design themes and b) allows good 32x32 and 16x16 reproduction, which is ABSOLUTELY critical (see newflesh's post). This is not favoritism, since notice that I did not pick any of my own logos.

I agree with the wordpress wiping out the circles; don't like that. That seems to be something caused by the template CSS. I'd rather some sort of subtle crossfade or something, but I'm not a CSS expert and so need to look at tutorials to see how to do that.

Votes could change however since there are 16 days left.

Trying my hands at some logo design to get the juices flowing.

My inspiration is the exchange aspect of counterparty, combined with some classic logography/typography (e.g. london underground). Font choice is Gotham Bold.

Second one but with the "party" perhaps on the second line. Having it too long makes it difficult to place the logo in all places

cheers

I like the second one too. I like the inspiration from the underground.

Perhaps to satisfy the requirement to put the logo in small places, how about the circle/arrow is the 'shortened' logo?

On a side note, it does look similar to my whipped up logo for blockscan (but with the direction of the arrow reversed)

 Grin

Seems people like the 2nd one. Will work on it some more.

Going to try:
- 2 lines
- Symbol taking up 2 lines
- Colors
- More prominent arrow (for low res reproduction)

Right now the winner by votes is: #1 (orange on black - 8 votes)
The "category" winner by votes is: Red Logo/23 (7+5 = 12 votes)
2nd place is #12 (7 votes)

There are 16 days of voting left.

I haven't sent you yet the payment.  Probably someone sent you a tip.  Apologies for the delay.
Ahh right, not a problem.

Thanks to whoever sent the tip Wink

Thanks also for the tip, Mr. Anonymous.

Updated page to be a little more tolerable aesthetically.

Next steps are to switch to a more modern/humanist font (e.g. Open Sans) and to overhaul the menu/title bar a bit. Also the RSS icons aren't showing up.
Also planning to up the opacity of the home page scroller a bit. Some of the background images cause text to be unreadable.
176  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ixcoin TODO on: January 29, 2014, 06:14:59 AM
Did the ixcoin.co site get updated? I see the new logo's up on there, but it's fairly ugly as of now. I'd much prefer the new versions that newflash posted up (with the clear backgrounds). And someone please do something about the ugly stretched logo up on the top left.

Slightly (albiet not very much) more realistically:  Suppose the reverse repo plan fails to draw down liquidity and hyperinflation hits.  How can you burn the fiat?   Talk up bitcoin.  Everyone buys bitcoin, other assets deflate to reasonable levels.  Stablize BTCUSD with market operations once you reach a preferred liquidity level.  In short: Make bitcoin a policy instrument.  It's a superb fiat burner, for you when absolutely, positively must burn fiat.  To do this well you must be able to sell bitcoin in quantity.  To do that, you need to stock up on bitcoin, in advance.  The US needs a strategic bitcoin reserve.

Any bets as to how likely the "FBI coins" will be "won" during the upcoming auction by an "internal bidder?"
178  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ixcoin TODO on: January 28, 2014, 09:40:13 PM
I'm willing to support 23 (the gray on white).
179  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Counterparty Protocol and Client (built on Bitcoin) - Official Thread on: January 26, 2014, 11:14:10 PM
How is the BTC burned?  Does that mean I lose the BTC forever?  How is this accomplished, technically?

The BTC are given to Bitcoin miners in fees. BTC are sent to addresses for which there is no private key. That makes them impossible to get back.

How can you have an address for which there is no private key? Wouldn't someone have to generate that address and wouldn't you need to trust that person to not have copied it and keep it in secret? Especially a vanity address such as the counterparty one?

I actually don't know for sure, but the way I've come to understand it is; there are basically enough addresses similiar to the amount of sand particles on earth times sand particles on earth and then some. Each of these addresses are already capable of being used. My guess is that someone somewhere in a hundred to a thousand years would be issued that counterparty address and win the lottery. As far as I know its not really possible to have an unspendable address.

It's kind of like if i sent $100 to asdfasdfasdjfskldjflsdjf@hotmail.com via paypal. It would go through, even if that email address didn't have a paypal account. But then if I created that email account and joined paypal, theoretically I would be authorized to claim that money.

I would say that the chances of someone recieving that counterparty address though, are so slim, it may never actually happen. But can someone correct me if I'm wrong ? I'm just guessing.

Numbers of grains of sand in the world: About 10^18
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_grains_of_sand_are_there_in_the_world

Numbers of stars in the universe: About 10^23 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/01/number-of-stars-in-universe_n_790563.html)

Number of possible unique bitcoin addresses: 58^27 (excluding checksum) ~ 10^47

If every star in the universe had an earthlike planet (hardly true), and every grain of sand on these planets represented a bitcoin address ... we would still fall way short of the number of possible addresses.

Humans are just not that good with very large numbers.

Ah, but that's the beauty of asymmetric key encryption. Say that you in fact sent money to asdfasdfasdjfskldjflsdjf@hotmail.com ... but no one else knows that. What bitcoin does is allow anyone to verify that you in fact sent that amount ... without disclosing the ability to actually make that account to anyone. I'm still amazed at the brilliance of bitcoin on a day to day basis, hence why I took the time to write this post, even though the things here are obvious

PS A birthday attack on a bitcoin address is FAR more likely (sqrt(10^47) = 3 * 10^23 which is close to 1 mole). There are several million bitcoin addresses that have been used so far. It is possible (though still hideously unlikely) that someone generates the private key to an already used addresses in the next several hundred thousand years, assuming human civilization survives that long (which will most likely contain a balance of zero). Generating the address to a particular account, though, is 0.000000000000000000000001 times as likely. (Bitcoin doesn't break when that happens, though. All you basically end up with is an equivalent of a copy of wallet.dat.)

Did the yellow/gold one just become more orange?  Kind of looks different.  I agree the spacing should match to be more pleasant.  Good catch.

I see Friction's point with the red.  We need to get the final 2 colors perfect and side by side and then do a vote.  Like friction says, we do need to think about the branding and long term.  At this point I'm not so sure which one is best.  I like the gold one best but I also see what Friction is saying.

Let's get them touched up and perfected and see them side by side and do a vote.

I did darken the background a bit. Looks yellow enough on my monitors (calibrated U2713HMs).
