181  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain AntMiner S1 Setup on: February 01, 2014, 11:04:26 AM
I just tried a 3 pin fan on the second board on the miner.when you attach it to 3 pins from the top going g down the fan works at normal speed. When you connect it starting with the second pin from the top the new fan doesn't work but the stock fan ramps up in speed a lot in the ui it's at 3020 at the temps are down to mid 3os. Is it Ok to keep it like that? It would be great for overclocked miners.

It has same effect and as much use as you just driving your car in first gear so you can see the RPM counter near the red.  It would be a great way to help burn out you fan faster.

Ant's are happy at 50c and below, the fan is set to work hardest at 60c and the unit shuts down at 70c.

ok i see i felt as much , otherwise everyone would have done it. shut off at 70 thats high compared to some other machine avalons were at 60 i think.also could 400mhz over clock burn the board out?

No 400Mhz will not burn out the board unless the components are out of spec but greater than that starts to push the VRM's and that could cause one to occur.

I run ant's at 400Mhz @ 50c in 23c ambient @2200-2500 rpm on a single fan. As spring turns to summer I will drop to 375Mhz or add cheap 130CFM fans, by the summer and assuming that the difficulty has not increased to make them unprofitable I will drop to 350MHz or below and add cheap 130CFM fans.
182  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcement: Bitmain launches AntMiner solution, 0.68 J/GH on chip on: February 01, 2014, 10:57:53 AM
Here are my results:

2x S1 @350Mhz = 685w
2x S1 @375Mhz = 735w
2x S1 @387Mhz = 755w
2x S1 @393Mhz = 765w
2x S1 @400Mhz = 775w

Powered by 1000W OCZ 80+ Gold PSU @ 110v

They are very similar figures to the ones I have using a Cooler Master 1050w @ 230v.

On newer PSU's the limit when overclocked seems to be 400W. So whilst a 450W 80PLUS would just do the job for an overclocked ant it will not last long, a 500W or better would be needed.

As and aside, I was pulling 450W at the wall on stock clocks on a very old PSU that frankly I should have put that in the bin ages ago.

Hi guys,

I am looking to invest some money into a mining rig, i am looking for something that would make me $150 ~ a day.

Since i am a complete newb and not sure how to go about this, please help me decide.

I am also very worried about electricity costs, i am in uk Wink

Wedel, the advice above is good but also remember that virtual currency mining is an arms race. To keep mining at £100 a day profit you need to also factor in buying new equipment as part of the costs to keep up with the difficulty increases, that greatly increases the amount of money you need to begin with.

Start simple and cheap to understand mining before you throw cash at it. Get a AMD 7950 graphics card or better and mine alternative currencies for a couple of weeks to understand just what it is about. If you don't like it you have something of value to sell, if you do like it then you can empty your savings account.

Hello all sorry to trouble you but i was wondering if anyone can help me and explain exactly how how to open up a command prompt to run cgminer -n , im having a slight problem getting my 2 5850's to run at more than 240khs but ive been a bit confused about the instructions i was given on another board

"Start -> run. "CMD" with out the quotes. CD To.you.miner.directory. cgminer -n. Copy, paste."

i like to think im not a total moron but this has thrown me, there is obviously a syntax protocol im not aware of and hence cant get it to work , any ideas would be terribly appreciated.   and if you could go throught it step by step as if you were spoon feeding a baby i would be grateful thanks in advance. btw my cgminer directory does reside in a folder on the desktop

Windows Start Button and enter CMD in the search programs and files box, press return or click on the CMD program icon after the search is complete. You will get a CMD box with a black background  and in white a C:\Users\your-user-name> prompt.

Open Windows Explorer and file the folder with the cgminer program in it so that you can see the program in the right hand side. Click the white space to the right of the folder name in the folder address box right at the top of Windows Explorer, the name of the folder will have changed slightly and will being with a C:\. Copy the whole of the string using cut and paste commands into the CMD box by copying the string from Windows Explorer by selecting it to turn it blue and then right clicking the selected string and left clicking copy in the drop down menu. Type the letters CD followed by space into the CMD box and then right click the CMD box background and left click paste in the drop down box. It should look like this before you press the next return key but with your username instead of mine

Left click inside the CMD box and press the return key, then you should get a new prompt that will be similar to C:\Users\ian\Desktop\cgminer> in white. Then enter cgminer -n and press the return key

Cgminer options

Anyone know how to add the following options to the cgminer config

I ssh'ed into the machine and added them like so

option api_network
option api_listen
option api_allow P:89.212.242.33,W:127.0.0.1
option api_groups P:switchpool:addpool:removepool:restart:save:*
option api_port 7777

Does not seem to work though

Has anyone had any success modifying the cgminer config with these options

You need to change the firewall rules to suit as well.

Any idea on what exactly needs to be changed in the firewall to allow the above ?

I had a look and it is not obvious to me. I have attempted to port forward 7777 but it does not seem to work.

Willing to give someone who is familiar with this a BTC tip if they can help me get this working

First the script /etc/init.d/cgminer does not allow the use of any --api-* cgminer options except for api-allow so you have to use port 4028 or re-write the /etc/init.d/cgminer script

I am assuming that you do not want to re-write the script and the IP 89.212.242.33 is not your network but some service on the Internet.

You will need to either setup your monitoring software to use port 4028 and forward incoming connections on that port to or set up your router to port forward 7777 to your ant miner on port 4028. The 'how to' do this is dependent on your router model and should be in its documentation. You will have to know if your router does port forwarding via NAT or just plain port forwarding for the next steps.

For NAT: Assuming the network your ant is on is either 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.2.0/24 and then change the antminer cgminer config to option api_allow 'P:192.168.*.*,W:127.0.0.1' and remove the api-groups and api-port lines.

For Plain Port Forwarding: Change the antminer cgminer config to option api_allow 'P:89.212.242.33,W:127.0.0.1' and remove the api-groups and api-port lines. In the antminer web gui go to the Network -> Firewall -> Traffic Rules and click the Edit button on the cgminer rule. Select the 'Any zone' radio button and click save and apply.

Now reboot your ant and test.
187  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Burned up a trace on 7950 with powered riser? on: February 01, 2014, 09:24:07 AM
Hi guys, I had an unfortunate event occur just now.  I just got some powered risers was installing them on my mining rig.  I have a Corsair HX1050 PSU powering a Sapphire 7950 with both 8 pin power plugs.  The 7950 is connected to a powered 16x riser cable that is powered from the same power supply.  This is the first time I had attempted starting the computer after adding the riser cable.  The second I hit the main power switch on the PSU I heard a pop and saw a small spark by the riser connector and GPU, along with that lovely burning electronics smell.   Cry  Upon closer inspection of the card I can see that pin 2 near the I/O end of the card is melted.  Could anyone tell me what happened?  I've built dozens of computers over the years, but never used risers before.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

You do not say if the riser is plugged into a PCIe x1 or x16 slot but it is most likely a bad powered riser that has solder creating a short from the first two pins which are +12v to either the third (which is unused on x1) or the fourth which is -12v. Clean the pins and plug the card into a good motherboard to see if the card has survived.

It is unlikely that the motherboard has been damaged as cables that could feed power back should have been cut but do a visual check of the PCIe connector and components to see if there is any damage.

How could I know which firmware version I have and what should I install in my Antminer S1s?
Thanks in advance.

Right hand side of the first line in the kernel log tab is the firmware release date

[    0.000000] Linux version 3.10.12 (xxl@ubuntu) (gcc version 4.6.4 (OpenWrt/Linaro GCC 4.6-2013.05 r38031) ) #10 Thu Dec 26 09:03:53 CST 2013

Do you mind posting what you have a few lines down under "Determined physical RAM map"?

I have one miner with "memory: 02000000" and another with "memory: 04000000" and the one with 02 has trouble overclocking without getting 6% hardware errors.

I'm just trying to figure out if there's a problem with one or if was an upgrade to the hardware from the 2013/12/1 boards to the 2014/01/4 boards.

Hmmmm...I have just checked all my ant's, I have at least 1 from each batch and they all report "memory: 04000000" regardless of the build date on the boards. I suspect you have a bad wrt module Sad

191  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer v1.6 fans not rotating on: January 31, 2014, 09:30:17 AM
Hello all,

I'm wondering if others have this problem also.
I received last week 3 antminers S1 v1.6 and they all seem to have the same problem.

When we connect them with our PSU via 2 PCI connectors the fans don't start rotating. It looks like they want to start, but they don't.

For the moment we connected the fans directly to the PSU and now they are rotating in full force, which makes a lot of noise off course.

We didn't have these problems with the v1.4 which we have also currently running.

Kr,
D

They are later versions of the fans, they do not start turning until the miner starts hashing and the chips warm up.

i have a problem, and i wonder if anyone got the same issue
after 2 days of mining i start to get errors on both miners 2 antiminers s1:
ooxxxooo oxoxoxxo oooxoooo oxxooooo

On BTC Guild, i have the same hash rate.

After a reboot, the errors goes away, and i can mine again for 2 days or so...

Ignore them it is just a display bug.

A lot of mine came like this. Should I try to clean some of the paste off? Normally they don't come this bad.

...

I had one similar a couple months ago. It was quite messy and oozing from the bottom of the heatsink and board as well. I cleaned it the best I could with a small piece of thin plastic as a scraper, then I wiped it down with alcohol and clean the rest with a q-tip. The fasteners on my messy one were also loose, check those for tightness. If you are able to tighten them more compound will come out so you probably want to do that before you do your final clean up.

You absolutely must clean that off.

I have had 3 S1's arrive. I have spent 30 minutes, 20 minutes, and 15 minutes respectively cleaning each unit.

You WILL get short-circuits if you don't clean it up.

Secondly, there is an oil in the paste that is harder to see. You should clean that up too. It helps to blow a fan on it to dry some of it up.

Spend a bit of time cleaning, it is worth it. It is really hard to clean out from the resistors and such, but take your time, be careful, don't break anything.

There are two types of thermal paste or grease, electrically non-conductive thermal grease that includes silicone and zinc or electrically conductive that includes silver, copper, and aluminium. Bitmain uses a non-conductive thermal grease, you do not need to even need to remove it, it just looks prettier if you do  Smiley

194  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcement: Bitmain launches AntMiner solution, 0.68 J/GH on chip on: January 30, 2014, 05:35:00 PM
DiffS is always =0 so what is your DiffS? I never see another number then 0. So why you want add 0? Grin

Oh if but that was only true, perhaps yours are not up long enough or my piece of string to the Internet is just too slow  Cheesy

Some of my ant's do not have any DiffS but some do when you leave them running

195  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcement: Bitmain launches AntMiner solution, 0.68 J/GH on chip on: January 30, 2014, 06:24:26 AM

My latest one has more HW errors than accepted work however my pool stats say its doing fine.

Right, to get a better sense of the HW error percentage, you have to divide the HW number by: (HW + DiffA + DiffR + DiffS)

At least that's what I've read.
Where is the devision?

The right formula is HW/(HW+DiffA+DiffR)%

You are missing the DiffS giletto, the little buggers sneak in slowly over days whilst your back is turned  Cheesy

HW / (HW + DiffA + DiffR + DiffS) = %
196  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Setup & Troubleshoot] Bitmain AntMiner S1 180GH/S miner on: January 27, 2014, 06:26:31 AM
The miner doesn't keep working if you turn off the power at the wall.

The point is you want to wait until the boards cool down before powering down.
Yeah, but you haven't explained why. The board won't continue to get hotter after you turn it off. It will cool down slower since the fan isn't running, but cooling down slowly isn't a bad thing.

Ever heard of a term called heat soak?

Heat soak on electronics normally works the other way, the device is run over temperature for an extended period to ensure heat induced breakdown of electrolytic material in a capacitor, the corrosive effect of any contaminants, the deterioration of plastics, the oxidation of contacts, joints and solders does not occur.

Just powering them off is good enough.

197  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Overclock the Antminer S1 to 200GH/s] The EASY way! on: January 27, 2014, 06:16:03 AM

Yep, I followed the old guide even with the new version - it worked fine, but I'm now using the correct values that you have (and were in the default asic-freq file as a guide).  My firmware is Dec 12, 2013 actually since I went back one version to avoid the excessive beep/rebooting I was seeing (I have my Ants temporarily far away and sometimes they have difficulty with solid connections.  After this week, I'll have them in a much better place and will be able to bump the firmware back to the most recent.

Good luck.

Just fyi...  I have to reboot my Ant's about every 24 hours as I see xx's on the ASIC's.  I'm sure it's just cosmetic (because the hash performance is fine) but I'm still babying these as they cost more than my old beat-up car, lol.  I can connect to my Ant's from anywhere so reboot is very easy using the web interface.

You do not need to reboot on seeing an 'x', it is a display bug, just watch the share rate on the pool of your choice.

hi, what's an acceptable HW error rate on the S1 ?  I have one device that has only 1 HW error, and another that has 1,739 on roughly the same amount of accepted shares 13,000, which is about 13% HW error rate...to me that seems a bit high.  can this be corrected with a firmware update, neither device is overclocked.   thanks in advance.

What are your full stats?

The calculation is HW / (HW + + DiffA + DiffR + DiffS) = % not just accepted
199  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Setup & Troubleshoot] Bitmain AntMiner S1 180GH/S miner on: January 26, 2014, 05:39:54 PM
Has anyone found a way to do a proper power cycle on these? In other words clear the capacitors - it solved so many hardware issues for me in the past.

Also does anyone know where I can download the original firmware because I want to clear the openwrt install completely to rule out software issues.

This is the error even though it's hashing at 160 at the moment. It was only @ 130 until I just did a reset - the green light isn't flashing on asic #0 but there is still processed work coming from it.
[  174.530000] bitmain 1-1.1:1.0: USB Bitmain asic #0 now disconnected

Add an image of your complete stats to the thread and tell us what PSU you are using and how it is connected e.g. molex, 2 x PCI-e from different cables, etc
200  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Setup & Troubleshoot] Bitmain AntMiner S1 180GH/S miner on: January 26, 2014, 01:26:57 PM
The boards are not flashing the green light on the side.  Problem with power delivery?  I can wiggle the pcie connectors to get one side to work but not both sides at the same time.

Im thinking faulty power adapter to board.

I have one that doesn't flash green but check the number of asic's on the status page & check the GH/s because if it is like mine it will still be hashing.
