The SEC investigated NBA Top Shot developer Dapper Labs, but decided to close case in September
https://fortune.com/crypto/2024/04/11/sec-dapper-labs-investigation-case-closed-september-2023-roham-gharegozlou/
"Following the collapse of crypto exchange FTX, the SEC has steadily sued and investigated a suite of crypto companies, including TRON Foundation, Terraform Labs, Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and now Uniswap. And settlements with Impact Theory and Stoner Cats in the second half of 2023 imply that the regulator has begun to seriously scrutinize the NFT industry.

The agency’s decision to close its investigation into Dapper Labs, one of the most funded companies in the market, may indicate a course correction. “It will surely provide some kind of comfort to participants in the NFT market,” Philip Moustakis, a securities lawyer at Seward & Kissel, told Fortune.

He added, though, that “you can’t presume that all NFTs are safe. The SEC has already made the point that some transactions in NFTs could constitute securities transactions.”

Arthur Jakoby, a former SEC prosecutor who now specializes in securities litigation at Herrick Feinstein LLP, cautioned against reading too much into the agency’s closure of its investigation. “It doesn’t mean they’re not going to investigate them next year,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that they think Dapper Labs hasn’t done something wrong. It doesn’t mean that they cleared Dapper Labs.” "

When people say IRA to me, I first think of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which fought for Irish independence.
A person does not need custodial intermediaries to invest in cryptocurrencies. If your cryptocurrencies are stored on other people's wallets, you no longer own them. The founder of the Bitcoin project wanted to free you from custodial intermediaries, but you don't want to free yourself from the shackles and keep saying that you need a custodial intermediary.

The benefit of having your crypto in an IRA here in the united states is, you don't have to file reports on your activities. and you don't have to pay any taxes. buy and sell all you want. no reporting. no paying taxes or anything. why wouldn't someone want that type of setup?

in order to have that type of setup though you have to setup an IRA. so if that can be done without involving a 3rd party, that might be a good thing. i just don't know if people do that. and if not why not. maybe because they are lazy and just go with sites like bitcoinIRA i dont know... Huh

Ok, I'll try to read up on bitcoinIRA because I don't understand how a third party custodial service allows US citizens to avoid paying taxes.
If an experienced user wants to stay in the shadows, then he will not use custodial services. There are a lot of projects on the Internet for exchanging cryptocurrencies without KYC.
If you can briefly explain to me how bitcoinIRA works, I will be grateful to you.
184  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: U.S. claims Russia is using Tether to evade sanctions – Uh… on: April 17, 2024, 02:46:28 PM
Sanctions against Russia revived the Russian economy and caused enormous harm to the economies of neighboring countries that received cheap resources from Russia. And then Russia kept the money received in European and American banks.
Now news about sanctions is no longer so popular, because many European countries have realized that their economies are suffering much more, while Turkey and China are earning good money.
185  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Largest DEX receives wells notice from the SEC on: April 17, 2024, 02:31:43 PM
Uniswap will be managed centrally, so sooner or later the authorities will require them to adhere to minimum identity verification and anti-money laundering procedures, which means requesting more data from all users.
I don't know if Uniswap will comply or not but I think some users will have no problem with that.
Uniswap is not a mixer, but simply an exchanger of some tokens for others within the same wallet.
What worries me most is how long Uniswap can continue with the legal procedures. Uniswap Labs' annual revenue is around $20 million. Their revenue is less than PancakeSwap, and I do not think it is enough to go into the details of a long trial if there is serious evidence against them.

https://blockworks.co/news/top-defi-protocols-by-revenue

PancakeSwap and Maker seem to be in a better position.
Before the SEC sends Wells notice to the companies, then the commissioners vote. If the majority wins, the Wells notice is sent to the company. The uniswap company now has 30 days to try to present its case and not bring the matter to trial.
If there is a trial, the case will get a lot of press coverage and other similar companies will help Uniswap as much as possible because it is in their best interest to do so
186  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Pending justice for SBF on: April 17, 2024, 02:24:48 PM
Sam Bankman-Fried, facing the prospect of spending much of his adult life behind bars, on Thursday appealed his conviction and 25-year prison sentence for stealing $8 billion from customers of the now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange he founded.
Defense lawyer Marc Mukasey had announced plans for the appeal to the Manhattan-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals during Bankman-Fried's March 28 sentencing hearing. The 32-year-old former billionaire crypto wunderkind was convicted in November on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy in what federal prosecutors have called one of the biggest financial frauds in U.S. history.

https://www.reuters.com/legal/bankman-fried-appeals-ftx-fraud-conviction-25-year-sentence-2024-04-11/
Sam Bankman-Fried broke a lot of laws that he may not get an even longer sentence as a result of the new trial.
The investigation was very long and in fact an appeal in a case like this can take a long time, and when it does, many people will have forgotten about Sam Bankman-Fried.
I don't understand who else got jail time, or were all the witnesses along with Caroline Eliesson?  Smiley
187  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Man Arrested for distributing and selling Hive RAT Malware on: April 17, 2024, 02:18:57 PM
Unfortunately, this is a very common way of selling illegal software that allows you to spy on the victim’s computer and steal all files and entered passwords. But the developers do not sell their software to unverified buyers, so most likely it’s a stupid intermediary who wanted an easy way to make money.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/prosecutors-rest-case-in-mango-markets-fraud-trial/ar-BB1lxgoP
"The government on Friday rested in its case against cryptocurrency trader Avraham Eisenberg, who is facing fraud charges.

Driving the news: Prosecutors presented very strong arguments that the defendant had a good idea he was committing a crime over a year ago, when he managed to extract over $100 million from Mango Markets.

Why it matters: In a fraud case, the government has to not only show that the defendant committed a crime, but that they were aware that what they were doing was against the law.

Catch up fast: Eisenberg is on trial in Federal Court in Manhattan for engaging in a trade where he was able to withdraw all the capital on Solana-based Mango Markets on October 11, 2022, using a derivate of the mango (MNGO) token as collateral.

After inflating the token with strategic purchases on various exchanges, he used the inflated value of a MNGO derivative as collateral to borrow all the available deposits on the platform, over $100 million worth.
Then he withdrew those funds to a wallet he controlled, and let his loan default."

189  Local / Альтернативные криптовалюты / Re: Telegram Open Network (TON): Павел Дуров выходит на ICO on: April 17, 2024, 02:09:26 PM

Smiley

larry_vw_1955, One Russian IT security engineer said a brilliant phrase: “What can leak, will definitely leak.”
To put it simply, all data stored on different platforms will be transferred to the state or hackers will sell it to scammers. Even if the platform does not contain your personal data, the details of your transactions can also convey a lot of information about you.
To invest in cryptocurrencies, a smart user does not need any platforms. I bought cryptocurrency for cash and I sold cryptocurrency for cash.

i'm talking about investing in bitcoin through an IRA so you don't have to pay any taxes. from what i've seen, at least on the bitcoinIRA website, you have to transfer your bitcoin into THEIR custody.

the bitcoinIRA website says this:

Up To $250M² Custody Insurance
Assets are insured for up to $250 million with BitGo and their insurance provider Lloyd’s of London, the world’s specialist insurance and reinsurance market

I would imagine that most people that see that have no idea how to verify if it is actually true and have no real understanding of what it really means.
When people say IRA to me, I first think of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which fought for Irish independence.

194  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: U.S. claims Russia is using Tether to evade sanctions – Uh… on: April 14, 2024, 11:48:36 AM
Of course they're going to do that, I'm sure that there's other ways that stuff that's supposed to be sanctioned are easily smuggled to Russia, I mean there's a story recently about how there's still products that aren't supposed to be in Russia like Coca Cola and other banned items that are still being sold, they do this thing called importing from other countries that don't have sanctions and there they get those items but it will arrive in Russia at a premium price so it's no surprise that they've been evading the sanctions and that's why Russia still have a really big war funds to continue the invasion of Ukraine. I guess with Tether being used, we probably need to stay away from it as soon as possible, that's what I'm getting from all of this.

If you do not understand global economics and global politics then please do not share your thoughts here. For your reference I am quoting this article which I believe is true.
Quote
Coca-Cola announced it was leaving the Russian market back in March 2022 as part of the global response to the invasion of Ukraine. Coca-Cola HBC, the Greek-owned company that bottled and sold Coke in Russia, switched to a new brand, Dobry Cola.

Can zasad@ confirm what I have quoted as I believe this is what is called American hypocrisy? They are now helpless and they know this is not the place to be that is why they have opened a new war in the Middle East.

Source

If you write about the news, there is a lot of lies and hypocrisy, but the situation is different. If you look at who owns most of the big companies in Russia, Europe, Ukraine, you will realize that it belongs to corporations like Blackrock and is managed through their funds. They own the news companies too.

What is the point of a large corporation destroying its assets?
I see only one answer to this question. It's a complete cleanup and building a new management system. When the situation in Ukraine is over, you will see that many companies controlled by Blackrock will come there with investments.
195  Local / Альтернативные криптовалюты / Re: Крипторубль (от фаундера Garantex) on: April 14, 2024, 11:18:34 AM

https://www.gazeta.ru/business/news/2024/02/21/22388245.shtml

I don't know if Uniswap will comply or not but I think some users will have no problem with that.
If identity verification is formal, then a lot of drop services will appear on the market that will help verify the wallet. If the verification is serious, then such actions could kill uniswap, because users will leave for other projects.
Uniswap is not a mixer, but simply an exchanger of some tokens for others within the same wallet.

You surprise me. It seems to me that you do not understand how the economy works. They tell you on TV about sanctions, but large global corporations don’t care about sanctions, countries, people. It is important for them to make a profit. Coca Cola did not leave Russia, they changed the name and are now sold under the brand "Добрый Cola"

It's the same with McDonald's. They also changed their name and are harassing people under a different brand "Вкусно и точка"
