1821  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tim Draper will give you money to learn about Bitcoin on: March 06, 2020, 04:14:32 PM
So if that was really the case, it's pretty much no payment admission, but instead you pay with your KYC/AML information. Somewhat like Coinbase Earn[1]. The $299 ticket is just there to pretty much make the "free ticket" through eToro look like a great deal.

Not that I'm in love with giving away my identity for something but at least with Coinbase Earn you actually get some currency out of it. Sure, it's measly today, but it's something to sit in your wallet to remind you what paod for it.

But what do you get if you sign up eToro? Another account you don't need, your money back minus fees, and a lifetime of spam to remind you of the time tim Draper took your identity in return for spam.

I seem to remember eToro always "gave" some amount of money to "play" when you brought your own. You could never withdraw that as it was meant for "playing" only. Yeah i know it sounds like a Casino for some reason, but the "game" is like "trading" with forex, stocks, other assets like metals, oil, and even some crypto. It has a term "cfd" or whatever.

Its a promotion to get you hooked to their site. Are you sure those "$100" aren't really for "playing" inside eToro? You can probably NOT withdraw that...
1822  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Another good news this week, Bitcoin Trading is now Legalised in South Korea. on: March 05, 2020, 09:42:37 PM
Thanks to this, and India, the price went back to Over 9000!

I don't know if corona virus is affecting, but it could be a side effect of the global economy slowing down. Bitcoin does not lose value when the global economy goes bad.

Did you see NASA's pictures of current China pollution? Its so ironic, how the virus made the skies clear again. All those factories closed; but that means someone is going to run out of (cheap) Chinese goods...

9k is a good value in my opinion, it might get back into 10k if the enthusiasm continues. And, halving is coming...
1823  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BREAKING NEWS: Bitcoin Legal in South Korea! on: March 05, 2020, 09:34:12 PM
About time Korea got in. It was strange they had such ambiguity with so many investors there interested, and the various exchanges etc.

China will take longer, because politicians there are even stronger, but its only a matter of time. Let them be surrounded and notice how wealth goes to others instead, for them to finally get it.

Blocking bitcoin means blocking wealth, pure and simple. The politicians that don't get it by words, will get it by numbers.

Lets just say Korea now has acquired an additional competitive advantage over China.

Of course it depends on their levels of "regulation". The more the State meddles in, the less effective. Such as that 20% tax... not good.
I think you're underestimating the very nature of the Chinese government. They aren't known for allowing their citizens to control anything that they would rightfully own in other countries, and I don't think they would be prepared to give a decentralised cryptocurrency the green light any time soon. Maybe, in the future if there are big changes internally for China, but currently their country looks to impose control of its population in every sector possible.

They will, for the same reason they opened their economy rather than continue the dogmatic socialist centralized nonsense. Sure it won't be quick, last time it wasn't until Mao Zedong died, that Deng Xiaoping started the economic reforms. Perhaps some remaining old dinosaurs need to go, or perhaps a revolution would occur like you suggest.

Thing is the economic disadvantage of refusing bitcoin is going to matter, and just like some other countries took and are still taking their time, they will end admitting defeat because the reality (numbers) talk better than the politicians.

And, its not like they don't have internal pressure. Things under an oppressive regime simply take much longer, but eventually they will find it useless to resist, like they found useless to oppose capitalism and ended embracing it, so will they embrace Bitcoin, even if they oppose it at first.

Note that bitcoin is controlled by no one, no govs, no institutions, no banks, no millionaires. The code governs it, and you know how hard it is to change its rules without everyone approving. So its not like the citizens would "control it" either. Very likely they will adopt a ton of useless regulation that seem to appease the average politician. If anything, its about the government losing control over the money, and that is good because that way things remain transparent and clear. If you over-budget, fix it without ruining everyone's money, that practice has to end.
1824  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: India: Timeline on Crypto's fight against RBI crypto ban on: March 05, 2020, 04:36:36 PM
In the words of a famous Indian:

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. -- Mahatma Gandhi.

Yes, it might not have been a wholesale "ban", but it wasn't good. Now things are looking better. Any "obstacles" to bitcoin just prevents wealth creation, it is an opportunity deprivation to put obstacles to it. Those countries that adopt it have a competitive advantage their rivals don't.

The implications for this are too important to let the ignorant politicians to handle. Thankfully your justice system is not just for decoration, like it is in my country... Well at least in this case, some justice was served.

Now lets hope they don't over "regulate" things, which would slowdown the wealth creation process (The size of the State is somehow always in counter-position to wealth creation, maybe its only a giant parasite?).
1825  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BREAKING NEWS: Bitcoin Legal in South Korea! on: March 05, 2020, 04:26:46 PM
First Japan. Then India. Now South Korea.

Slowly and silently Asian countries are discovering the fact that the only way they can compete with USD/EUR is by legalizing Crypto aka BTC. They wont ever be able to take their individual national currencies to the level of acceptance USD/EUR has. Hence, they are banking on decentralized medium of exchange.

Question is When China?

About time Korea got in. It was strange they had such ambiguity with so many investors there interested, and the various exchanges etc.

China will take longer, because politicians there are even stronger, but its only a matter of time. Let them be surrounded and notice how wealth goes to others instead, for them to finally get it.

Of course it depends on their levels of "regulation". The more the State meddles in, the less effective. Such as that 20% tax... not good.

1829  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: New Life for Antminer S9 20TH 1500 watts (6 boards) on: March 05, 2020, 01:26:18 AM
The watts guessing thing isn't done by bOS yet, maybe if you request this feature they may consider it for a future release. I guess some people would have to volunteer measuring at different speeds and voltages for them to be able to produce such a thing.

An alternative is to code it yourself (it is open source after all), or pay someone to do it.
1830  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: March 05, 2020, 01:06:02 AM
The SE (and K) are not supported (don't work) with BraiinsOS yet. I think i left various links in that thread pointing for possible methods to regain SSH, but those models came with SSH access disabled from factory because they are 2019 models. I believe you can still control the fans using some html trickery with the factory firmware.

The bOS team plans to add support to more hardware such as the S17 after the next release.

One of the reasons they rewrote cgminer from scratch in rust (called bosminer) was precisely to ease adding more hardware.
1831  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think, India lifting the ban on cryptocurrencies will impact BTC Price? on: March 04, 2020, 08:22:55 PM
This allows the people from India to save their money from the ill management of their government to their fiat. It gives them an alternative for keeping their savings, regardless of politicians.

Of course an increase in demand is going to put some pressure up, little or much, it will depend in how much demand it gets. The startups can even restart a source of wealth what was being stupidly blocked by (ignorant) politicians.

Its good news. And yes the second most populated country in the world should weight something.
1832  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HTC to release a blockchain router to let users run a full bitcoin node at home on: March 04, 2020, 08:12:06 PM
Android based router? No thanks, might as well put windows in there... The thing even has a screen, its a tablet of sorts.

The HTC Exodus phones claim the same thing: "Full Bitcoin Node", whatever that even means (for HTC). Sure a 500gb SSD should be able to do it, or maybe its just using the cheapest flash memory you can get (the phone is supposed to cost 700$).

I think they are just trying to make something "cool" for the people learning about crypto, something more like a fashion.

Yes a raspi like thing could do the same but safer and cheaper. Just use a 500g sd (or usb hd).
1833  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Total privacy Bitcoin]: off grid Transactions LoRaWan/goTenna on: March 04, 2020, 07:55:42 PM
goTenna is a true mesh network (while LoRaWan isn't, as there isn't relay between receivers), so you need to be in range to another node, not necessarily connected to the network, but what you need is a series of noded where only the "last" one is connected to the internet.
Lorawan has wider range, and this might overcome other mimitations.

Are you even aware that goTenna is just some American company and not (really) a technology?

The idea of a mesh data network started with an MIT project called roofnet. From that came something else and then a company called Meraki which was later bought by an even bigger company. But, a Free Open Source protocol also came out from it: open-mesh.

This is the software to build a mesh ad-hoc network. The idea is that all the wifi routers connect to each other, and people with internet can share it with everybody else much further away (as many hops as needed) by giving internet access to their device. Once you have that, you can do anything else like running Bitcoin nodes (which won't have stellar latency, mind you, this is a high latency network), you could even do that over tor for added security.

LoRa (LongRange) IS a technology developed by some company in France. They use lower bands, which tend to reach longer distances. Unfortunately the availability of these bands change from country to country "433 MHz, 868 MHz (Europe), 915 MHz (Australia and North America) and 923 MHz (Asia)."

This sounds great when you need to cover long distances (such as from a city to a town) as long as there aren't many obstacles (such as a mountain) in the way. Of course, there have been experiments using 2.4 (wifi) doing really long distances using unidirectional high gain (large dish) antennas. But i guess using this technology aiming the thing would be much easier.
1834  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Sad News]: Nigerian shot dead after resisting robbers access to crypto phone on: March 04, 2020, 02:48:01 PM
Nigerian Man Shot Dead by robbers to access his mobile phone with crypto

Quote
“Investigations so far have also revealed that the bosom friend of the victim arrested had hinted one of the suspects of the discovery of $10, 000 in the victim’s Bitcoin wallet and then contacted the other suspects for the robbery operation. “From the confessional statements of the suspects, their intentions for carrying out the operation was to dispossess Iroro of the $10, 000 in his Bitcoin wallet but were disappointed to find out that what was left when they struck was $400.

I don't want to bring this news, but I guess everyone in crypto should understand the dangers whether online and offline. And another sad thing is that the man doesn't have $10k, but rather $400.

Also, we need not to tell anyone of our bitcoin stash, otherwise others might be tempted to robbed us as what happen here.

This is one of the reasons people seek anonymity. Crooks may find out if you are stashing a large sum by investigating you socially or online. The sad thing is KYC is all over the place, and that information is prone to be stolen by third parties.

This is one of the problems with owning a hardware wallet, they attract attention. Its like in my country, where owning an iPhone is nearly a death sentence...

However a piece of paper with handwritten words, or a book where the seed words are carefully hidden in plain sight, and of course a lifestyle that doesn't attract attention, could let you survive in certain places.
1835  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [JAN 2020] Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: March 03, 2020, 02:30:36 PM
And what happens if the prediction fails due to a mempool clog?
Then it can take weeks, you can drop the transaction, use CPFP, or use RBF.

This will probably happen at some point again during the next bull run, and that's all the more reason to consolidate your small inputs before that happens. Which reminds me: I haven't done that in a while.

I always use 1 sat/B and this is never a problem. Sure, have RBF around just in case.

Why do you even let wallets decide? Always use 1 sat/B. Does it make a difference if it takes 6 hours, 11 hours or 20 hours?

As far as i know, the only tx that are "dropped" are those using 0 fee. 1 is safe, no matter how long it takes. Yes i know some nodes may drop them, but others will retain it and they won't ever leave the network until processed.

I love how Electrum shows the "size" of (mempool?) transactions to go before an unconfirmed gets confirmed, the number is quite useful to give you a rough idea how the traffic currently is.

Actually, the fact that the prediction can fail (a sudden traffic spike right after you broadcast) is even more reason to NOT let wallets decide the fee.

BTW: The only time i had a transaction take "weeks", was on Jan 2018, i have never seen that again. In the last two years, my 1 sat/B tx would took a day or less, sometimes even 1 hour.

"Fees are low" is misleading, the fee is not arbitrarily decided by Bitcoin. You the user decides the fee. Wallets are prone to guess wrong (too late) or be victim of a sort of attack where a large traffic spike in turn makes wallet use higher fees which in turn makes the other wallets rise the fees which in turn...

Anyway, don't let the wallets decide. 1 sat/B is good for everything, unless you have an emergency. Then "2" would probably make it in half an hour...

I'm still waiting for when they let us use 0.1 sat/B...
1836  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: March 03, 2020, 01:10:38 PM
So how these third party firmware give u a pretty close reading ?

I tested the reading vs physically taking the reading and they get pretty close .  +-20watts in total consumption.

It is true that the hardware has no direct means of measuring this. My guess is that they took some measures manually at different speeds and voltages and make an educated guess.
1837  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Collection Thread] Series and films in which Bitcoin (or Altcoins) appear on: March 03, 2020, 12:40:57 PM
Bitcoin is mentioned in the 3rd season of the series Person of Interest, at least twice in the "plane episode" (13). Its also mentioned in a previous episode, some guy made "a million and a half in bitcoin".

1839  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: “Suiche Nacional” Medida que estudia gobierno Venezolano. on: March 02, 2020, 05:56:47 PM
