Guard crocodile. Throw it in your water filled moat, raise the drawbridge and when would be trespassers attempt to swim across, it will keep the moat pretty much free of invaders.
1202  Other / Off-topic / Re: Three solutions to the Fermi Paradox on: September 19, 2020, 09:32:18 PM
Its a Paradox not a problem, therefore there is no "solution". This doesn't mean the chance is zero to encountering any other sentient race (or vice versa), only that the chance diminishes every day (just like finding Bitcoin blocks Cheesy)

"This" universe is known to be expanding, so yeah. Something "might" be there, but by the time we would reach it, they would be long extinct (or viceversa). We know most of the inner planets of this system will disappear in a few billion years. How long do you think it takes to go from place a to place b in space? A LOT.

Even if FTL travel gets invented, you still have a lot of problems. Simply moving from point A to point B, sets you in a different time flow, how many minutes you spend in point b does not correlate with the time flowing in point a, time dilation will effect greatly the father way you are, because... Everything in the universe is moving, not just generally expanding, but whole bunch of systems and galaxies rotating.

We are living in a outer edge of this known galaxy, which is rather out from the possible center. You do know that the edges rotate faster than the center, do you now? This means, our time is flowing already different. We are traveling "fast" compared to the center, so our minutes may be hours or months elsewhere. See where this is going yet? It gets worse.

This does not mean there could not be 1, 2 or 3; or multiverses or more. What exactly happens when we die, and where exactly do we come from when born? Is this life even life?

The truth is out there, or maybe not.

In the beginning (of the big bang) there was not even time flowing. So what was before it? and when is the expansion ever ending? Evidence suggests its just increasing.
1203  Other / Off-topic / Re: Pirated Software: When and Why? on: September 19, 2020, 09:15:01 PM
Buying pirated discs was the only way to obtain software during the 80ies in my country that had banned imports. Thankfully in the 90ies Linux came and by the 00ies it was an option to replace all. By the 10ies no software needing to be "pirated" was on my computer anymore, gone are the days of warez, serialz and crackz, all behind the dark ages of not knowing Free and Open Source software.

The only software i might be interested in purchasing is the occasional game, as long as there is a way to do so with bitcoin. Before Valve went idiotic removing bitcoin purchases in 2018, i managed to purchase a few games. Now you'd need to get some overpriced european giftcard which is too annoying to bother with. Of course most people from "nice" countries can just use paypal, its not like they don't have credit card companies anymore...

But doing it today? What for? Everything is but a pacman (or yay) command away, replace with whatever your distro uses for packages.

Last time a windows was present on my main computer, it was Windows XP 64 bits, that was nearly two decades ago. Why would i want to return to that nonsense ever again? If there is the occasional game that doesn't work, i play something else that does. How could people still deal with Windows after decades of malware goes beyond my comprehension. It is bad even with zero cost.

Once the chains are broken, you never look back.
1204  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Binance sued for money laundering over stolen bitcoin. on: September 17, 2020, 05:13:06 PM
They're quite right though. It's quite easy to launder smaller amounts of money as the no-KYC limit is 2 BTC per day if I remember correctly. Not sure how they laundered 1,451 BTC without exposing their identity though. Probably stolen documents?

So, make 726 accounts, or wait 726 days, or perhaps a bit of both, have say, 10 accounts and spend 73 days doing it? What about 20 accounts and 37 days? What if they don't just use Binance but multiple exchanges with similar limits? Are they going to sue all of them?

Then you could go on and on. The Exchanges are the problem. Bitcoin is the problem, internet is the problem, computers are the problem, electricity is the problem...
1205  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why mixers? on: September 17, 2020, 04:58:37 PM
That's why you use mixers. Good mixers will completely break the chain between inputs and outputs.

Why are mixers legal? The only purpose I find on them is to money launder. They are literally useless if you don't have anything to hide.

Except there are many places where criminals are looking to extort, kidnap or worse, rich people. And a key to identify rich people, is finding out what their finances are. So yeah it "sounds nice" that you need to explain your gov where your fortune comes from to deter crime, but it isn't great when this info falls in the wrong hands, and in some places, such criminal organizations have ties with the very same gov or entities regulating this.

You see, its a catch22. Suppose the Mixer requires you to KYC to comply with regulations. Then this mixer (or the KYC processor) is "hacked" and the info sold in the "dark web". Then some local crimelord with a cyber arm finds out about you...

But yes, it could make easier to launder too. Those who live in "nice countries" (ie. low crime rate) would seem to willingly surrender their privacy. What could possibly go wrong? But many living "less nice" places, where crime and police are often one and the same, their privacy means their life, quite literally.

What is the crime in becoming rich by honest means? Its not a crime, but criminals would love to find you... And then they will launder what they take from you. Or maybe lets forget KYC and educate people to not do foolish things like holding a large sum in an online wallet, reusing addresses, and leaving traces that could make third parties correlate address with person.

Well i guess you could also diversify and invest in other things. Laundering is nothing new, and has been always done with fiat. Bitcoin is not at fault, and things like KYC are an external artifact from an outdated system/society.
1206  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Deadliest Bitcoin hack in history on: September 17, 2020, 04:36:15 PM
Not sure "deadliest" is the right way to call this, lol. It's more like one of the very few unsuccessfully exploited flaws at the time.

If the exploit hadn't been discovered or something like that, it's highly possible that a fork would have taken place with the fixed bug. In my opinion, that flaw actually helped Bitcoin in a way: it showed us all that Bitcoin's strength only improves over time.

Nobody died from this event, that word is unnecessary.

The important thing is it was found and fixed early, and we have been doing fine. Bitcoin has matured.
1207  Economy / Speculation / Re: COVID-19 Vaccine Will Cause Bitcoin Crash on: September 16, 2020, 07:19:53 PM
The word "crash" makes it sound too apocalyptic.

Definitely, but boy, tell that to some of the Newbies(and Jr members) that posts threads with topics such as "why bitcoin crash? wen moon?" after a small typical 5% drop lmao.

Yes, i even stopped correcting them. Its endless. Wikipedia clearly defines what "crash" means (high two digits, ie. losing 75% value) and these fools keep calling "crash" any little dip.

Nothing can make Bitcoin crash suddenly overnight, because it is in the hands of too many people that appreciate it, period.

If some fool thinks its worthless and starts selling it (or "dump it") it will be bought back even faster than his ability to keep selling. Bitcoin is THAT valuable.

Bitcoin price stood despite the pandemic. Why would the end of the pandemic means it loses its price? This is as nonsensical as it may get. But i guess someone just wants to attract attention. Internet social media as usual...
1208  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Operation moonshot in the UK on: September 13, 2020, 05:31:55 PM
It is another massive waste of our money. I will resist being tested, and will demand details of the testing methods, and the replication factors applied. I believe that they are setting up roadside testing stations, and making the testing mandatory, with forced self-isolation following a positive result. It will be interesting to see what happens if I get an independent test which is negative if they hit me.

Yes this is an important issue. Include in the operation manual: tranquilizer dart or tazer. If subject resists, use that first, then when suspect falls unconscious to the ground; forcibly perform the test in the name of national security. Make sure the subject is added to the list of suspects that need 24/7 monitoring, cannot tolerate people opposing the State...

And this is what you get when you give almighty power to the State. Resistance is futile.

Also you are a subject to the monarchy, you belong to the Queen. Now bend.
1209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it possible that the 51 Percent Attack on Bitcoin could Happen? on: September 13, 2020, 04:40:03 PM
It doesn't happen because it would cost more to pull the attack than any possible benefits. Yes, too expensive to be of use. Remember when the Binance CEO wanted to do it? Took Jihan Wu, of all people, to deter him from doing this.

And, if you are concerned, why are you mining in Chinese pools? Thankfully Bitmain is now breaking apart, but it shouldn't own two pools in the first place.

An Exchange with a pool? What could possibly go wrong? Hey, next time they "lose" money, they have "free" liquidity... Fractional reserve anyone?

1211  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: September 12, 2020, 11:40:29 PM
Why can´t we go below 1480 watt on the autotune setting? Is there a reason for that?

I have yet to try an S17, in the S9 you can set it to 100. Realistically, it will give about 100w to each card, so while you can type 100 (or 200), its more like 300w is the actual minimal for the S9.

I'm surprised that the S17 has such high minimal, i will ask and report.
1212  Other / Off-topic / Re: Any girls had similar experiences online on bitcoin forums on: September 12, 2020, 11:29:00 PM
This is not a rule of reddit but a rule of internet. For several reasons, you don't want to give personal details of you, or at the very least, mislead them. The language doesn't help much because it isn't gender neutral as some other languages can be. The "them" "they" proposal is gaining traction, probably to the chagrin of english teachers worldwide, but there is a need for it. If you can act androgin, even better. This of course sorta ruins a lot of the social interaction, so hopefully you have that in real life rather than online.

Sure you can play the opposite gender, but the problem is changing attitude when they learn you are of certain gender/race/etc. So the less they know, the better.

And for that reason, you cannot tell if there are "many girls" here or not, and its best that it remains that way. For all you know, its men impersonating girls anyway (or women impersonating men)

And that is even before getting into the preferences, feelings, or identify as; gender discussion.

As they say: There are no girls online, only men and fbi agents pretending to be 14yo f.
1213  Other / Off-topic / Re: Covid 19 Where it Come from? on: September 12, 2020, 11:11:38 PM
I don't think its a problem of intelligence agencies, but of sanitary handling. The world is not ready to resist a biological attack, and this wasn't.

This virus thrived within humans habits, like the flu it spreads from saliva flying around into others or sticking to surfaces humans would often touch and bring to their face.

A proper quarantine of no more than a month is all that was needed to stop this on its track, but the world was too "busy" to bother with quarantines, and it got out of control quickly.

Again, humanity cannot withstand a true biological attack. If you want to give an evaluation of which countries did better/worse, take a look at the statistics with number of cases, and deaths, and you can tell from it.

It is the social issue, people are told to stay home but they go out. A bio-hazard is not something you should take lightly, as it can quickly escalate in pandemic disaster, but people couldn't do better, they "had to do" whatever it is, that meant getting close to infected and spread it more.

So to not lose one month, we lost several. Most govs acted too little, too late. Once reported in Jan, all transport should have been halted one month to let the virus die itself, but it didn't. People kept going out, goods kept moving, passenger flights kept running, spreading it more to all. In addition, nearly a million died, so far.

The virus isn't man made. It "might" have escaped from Wuhan's research center (which means they collected it earlier), but it certainly comes from nature, if your diet involves bats or pangolins anyway, "someone" has to process them, someone exposing their human bodies to animal potentially mutating viruses.

The "Avian" and "Swine" flu jumped species pretty much the same way. You might as well call this the "bat" flu or "pangolin" flu. It is type corona because its spiky, but its not the only corona virus, and probably won't be the last.
1214  Other / Off-topic / Re: Electric car - do you like it? on: September 12, 2020, 05:36:46 PM
Electric cars will be the future this is clear, but at the moment they are expensive and in case you need to replace some parts for example the windshield is 5-10 times more expensive than for a classic car, at least in the case of Tesla model 3 changing the windshield costs over 1000 Euro.
But you are not going to pay for it right unless you don't have Insurance for your car. Cheesy

Look at the maintenance cost not the spare parts.

While you are at it, COUNT how many parts are used in a typical ICE vs en EV. It is baffling people are so blind to even notice this.

Take a look at the inside of the typical ICE, then look inside the EV, note the simplicity. This matters in the long run. The Tesla barely uses some oil for the driving wheel and the (much fewer) moving parts, while the others have gazillion pieces that degrade and need to be replaced periodically: separate types of oil, filters, hoses, sparks, water, fuses, etc, etc, etc.

An people dare to insinuate an EV is more pollutant, as if the EVs were leaking oil and fuel (and fumes) all over the place and not the other way around...

The windshield for the Tesla 3 might be more expensive, but that is because that particular car has long windshield like the modern Volkswagen. If you want cheaper parts, get a simpler car from another brand or just another model (eg. used S vs 3).
1215  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [4+ EH] Slush Pool (slushpool.com); Overt AsicBoost; World First Mining Pool on: September 11, 2020, 03:13:34 PM
Hmm, i hope they teach SI prefixes at school in your country Cheesy

It means Exa, its what comes after Peta, which comes after Tera, which comes after Giga, which comes after Mega, which comes after Kilo... Ever seen memory or disk drive sizes? Its the same.

1 Exa = 1000 Peta.

Technical answer: EHs = Exahashes per second.

Bitcoin's entire network hashrate is currently about 124 EHs, most of it from Chinese pools...
1216  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: September 11, 2020, 04:06:27 AM
Yes it will sense the change. If you don't want to install it to the miner's NAND, you would need individual microSD cards for each.
1217  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: September 09, 2020, 06:08:02 PM
There are no jumpers in the S17. It boots from it if you insert an sd card.
1218  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Antminer R4+ elite? on: September 08, 2020, 05:22:07 PM
The R4 was essentially 2 S9 boards rearranged for better (vertical) airflow. The scrolling fan its most distinct feature, i think makes a very good silent heat spreader for winter.

Unfortunately nobody else has shown interest in this concept, the living room miner.

Sure, you can always run a regular S9 at low power using Braiins OS (even using a single fan), but i think the wider aperture of the R4 makes for a better spreader. A shame, really.
1219  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: September 08, 2020, 04:32:35 PM
The 20.09 release is live now. It adds support for the S17 and S17pro; There are also some minor bugfixes for the S9 family (supported models are still the S9, S9j and S9i only). In addition, those mining in Slushpool with Braiins OS+ will not pay any pool fees this month. That's right, its 0. The dev fee remains at 2%.

Here is a little something for those of you who wanted to make monitoring tools for bosminer:

Code:
############
BOSminer API
############

*****
Usage
*****

Basic subset of the upstream cgminer API as well as several
new commands are implemented.

To test API, you can use `nc` in the following way *(replace the *IP_ADDRESS* placeholder with your miner's IP address)*:
**Single command**

  echo '{"command":"pools"}' | nc IP_ADDRESS 4028

In case you want to format JSON string, you can use `jq`:

  echo '{"command":"pools"}' | nc IP_ADDRESS 4028 | jq .

**Multiple commands**

  echo '{"command":"version+config"}' | nc IP_ADDRESS 4028 | jq .

**Command with parameter**

  echo '{"command":"asc","parameter":0}' | nc IP_ADDRESS 4028 | jq .

******************************
List of all supported commands
******************************

=============================
Commands from the CGminer API
=============================

We provide only brief description of the commands below. If interested in additional
details, please read the official documentation. https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer/blob/master/API-README

 * **asccount** - The details of a single ASC number N in the same format and details as for DEVS
 * **asc** *|N* - The number of ASCs
 * **config** - Some miner configuration information
 * **devdetails** - Report per chain configuration
 * **devs** - Each available ASC with their details
 * **edevs** *[|old]* - The same as devs, except it ignores blacklisted devices and zombie devices (unless the "old" parameter is used)
 * **pools** - Report pool configuration and statistics
 * **summary** - The status summary of the miner
 * **stats** - Each device or pool that has 1 or more getworks with a list of stats regarding getwork times
 * **version** - Print API and BOSminer version
 * **estats** - the same as stats, except it ignores blacklisted devices and zombie devices
 * **check** - checks, whether the API command exists and is accessible
 * **coin** - coin mining information
 * **lcd** - short status summary of the miner
 * **switchpool** *|N* - switches the selected pool to the highest priority
 * **enablepool** *|N* - enables the selected pool
 * **disablepool** *|N* - disables the selected pool
 * **addpool** *|URL,USR,PASS* - adds pool
 * **removepool** *|N* - removes pool

**Note**: the commands *switchpool*, *enablepool*, *disablepool*, *addpool* and *removepool* are not fully implemented in Braiins OS. The outcome of these commands is reset after restart and they do not activate the pools. This is a known issue and is being fixed.

Sounds over complicated. Its simple: Buyer pays shipping, the shipping company picks it up and delivers it. Its usually by ground/sea yes, since its usually pallets of the stuff. From the US it would take about a week.

Electricity price here is so low often people joke about it being "free". It isn't, but is a fraction of the USD ¢ (much much lower than 1¢ the Kw/H). Because of hyperinflation, tomorrow is already half the price as the State owned electric company takes too long to increase the rates to compensate. The electric grid is not in good shape from years of negligence, so not all is rosy.

My acquaintance is doing oil immersion to S9s, he often goes to kaboomracks or ebay. Has some old Avalons and assorted stuff too.
