1842  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-04-26]A South Korean gaming company is said to be in talks to buy Bitstamp on: April 26, 2018, 05:01:25 AM
Businessinsider.com

Nexon, one of the largest and most prominent Korean gaming corporates, could be finalizing a deal to acquire the Bitstamp exchange, according to sources from Business Insider. It is not clear what Nexon plans to do with the exchange, but there is a suggestion that they may be looking to incorporate cryptocurrency into their gaming environment— possibly for the use of micro-transactions. The price for such an acquisition is reportedly around $350 million.

Nexon is known for several high-profile video games including Counter-Strike, FIFA Online 3, Eve Online, and MapleStory. These games all have (or had) huge online followings with some also seeing gameplay in the field of eSports. A decision to buy Bitstamp could mean that Nexon is looking to broaden their horizons and integrate cryptocurrencies into their games by allowing payment gateways for several coins and tokens. Bitstamp’s exchange would certainly offer them the ability to provide crypto-based services to their users.

Created in 2011 in Slovenia, Bitstamp was once the most important exchange in the crypto community, since it was one of the oldest, and it was one of the first trading gateways in the industry. At the moment it is ranked 10th for 24-hour volume ($506,460,21).

If news of this deal is official, then it marks a significant moment for cryptocurrency. Gaming and crypto are two industries that have been working together for the majority of 2017. Blockchain games such as CryptoKitties and EtherCraft were instrumental in bringing crypto to the masses, and tokens like Enjin have focused on evolving the world of games for a while now. Beyond that, people have long suggested that many coins and tokens are perfect for handling micro-transactions in games as they are fast, lightweight, and cheap.

If Nexon were to embrace cryptocurrency fully, it could change the East Asian gaming scene for years to come as it provides professional gamers and e-sports players the opportunity to handle cryptocurrency while they play. It also opens the world of cryptocurrency to other gamers around the world who may be unfamiliar with the concept.

Cryptocurrency Has Potential to Threaten Fiat: South Korea’s Finance Minister

themerkle.com

Kim Yong-jin, South Korea’s Deputy Minister of Strategy and Finance, stated at a financial conference held at InterContinental Seoul that the cryptocurrency market is growing exponentially and gaining stability.

Minister Kim surprised local investors and cryptocurrency researchers by stating that alternative means of payment such as cryptocurrencies could threaten the foundation of the traditional fiat system.

“Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, which led an investment and speculative bubble earlier this year, have stabilized and are leading both the authorities and investors to question the foundation of the fiat system,” said minister Kim. He added that “the central bank should consider the emergence of alternative payment methods such as cryptocurrencies as a threat to the existence of the traditional fiat system.”

THE CRYPTOCURRENCY ECOSYSTEM IN SOUTH KOREA
The administration of President Moon Jae-in has garnered the majority support of the people of South Korea thanks to the government’s notable efforts to draft a peace treaty between the North and the South, and the government’s efforts to crack down on corrupt politicians. Former presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak have been arrested and incarcerated for corruption, with former president Park facing up to 25 years in prison.

This January, the Moon administration was struggling with a 20 percent decline in support from the citizens of South Korea. At the time, analysts attributed the drop to the abrupt announcement of a cryptocurrency trading ban by Justice minister Park Sang-gi, who claimed that the government would impose a ban on cryptocurrency trading in the short term during a press conference.

After significant pushback, on the same day, the Blue House, the executive office of President Moon, announced that there would be no ban on cryptocurrency trading in both the short and long term, and that the government would embrace technologies like blockchain to ensure that South Korea stays at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution.

Since the end of the South Korea cryptocurrency trading ban scandal in January, the South Korean government has focused on imposing practical regulations and policies to protect investors in the cryptocurrency market and facilitate the growth of businesses.

IMPROVING THE ICO ECOSYSTEM
Recently, several reports from mainstream media outlets in South Korea revealed that the government is considering lifting its ban on initial coin offerings (ICOs) in the near future, as the country’s largest multi-billion dollar cryptocurrency and technology conglomerates, including Kakao and Bithumb, have threatened to leave the country to establish blockchain ventures elsewhere.

The permanent relocation of Kakao’s and Bithumb’s blockchain businesses to Switzerland, which is the short-term plan for the two companies, could result in losses of billions of dollars for the South Korean cryptocurrency market.

To prevent South Korean companies from leaving the country, the government has started to draft a taxation policy for domestic ICOs to legalize and approve token sales.

“The financial authorities have been talking to the country’s tax agency, justice ministry and other relevant government offices about a plan to allow ICOs in Korea when certain conditions are met. Various scenarios such as the imposition of value-added tax, a capital gains tax, or both on trade; and the collection of corporate tax from local cryptocurrency exchanges, as well as the initiation of authorized exchanges with licenses, are being discussed,” a source within the government told The Korea Times.

The recent statement by the country’s finance minister, coupled with the government’s initiative to remain at the forefront of the global cryptocurrency industry, demonstrate the optimistic outlook the local authorities have towards the market.

1848  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / ‘Bitcoin’ was the 9th most read article on Wikipedia in 2017 on: April 25, 2018, 06:08:22 PM
Bitcoin is more popular than Wonder Woman and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson on Wikipedia

tnw

Gone are the days when you had to personally break down the concept of Bitcoin to your less informed friends and family. Wikipedia has got them all up to speed now.

The 2017 edition of the annual ‘Top 50 Report’ of Wikipedia shows that Bitcoin was the ninth most-read article on the digital encyclopedia for last year.

Bitcoin’s article got a total of over 15 million views, less than a million short of the views for the entry on the US.

The list shows that Bitcoin got 1 million more views than Wonder Woman, 2.6 million more than Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and 2 million more than Elon Musk.

In a witty and poetic entry written by Wikipedia Senior Editor JFG, Bitcoin is described as something that is the highly speculative and intangible — but still would have been a better investment than Tesla stocks in 2017:

For our dear readers who can’t make heads or tails of this novelty: Bitcoin is as good as gold, shinier than lead, bubblier than tulips, held deep in the mines, and driving people nuts.

Gold has enriched adventurers and itcoin has held fools to ransom. You may dive in a pool of gold, but lose it all at war. Strangely, while you can still buy gold today and forget about it until your great-grandchildren cash it out, the much-hyped “future of money” has turned into the most speculative intangible asset of all time, while proving totally unsuitable as a means of payment. Still, over 2017 at least, itcoin would have been a better investment than Tesla stock.

Other cryptocurrencies still seem to be trailing far behind when it comes to popularity among the general population. There’s no other cryptocurrency related article that could make it to the list of top 50.

But, even the 5000 most popular article in the last week feature only four articles from the cryptocurrency realm — Bitcoin (354), Blockchain (312), Cryptocurrency (1273), and Ethereum (3710).

The term blockchain is getting more search queries now than Bitcoin, which also shows that people are diving deeper into the world of cryptocurrencies and trying to understand the technology behind it.
1849  Other / Meta / Re: Banned account i don't know why :( on: April 25, 2018, 05:33:28 AM
Have you been banned or received a punishment? Sometimes you can receive a punishment and stay for a few days without being able to post something. You can log in, but you can not type anything. And you get a message stating the reason. But banning is a measure that only administrators can take and is usually associated with some security issue. At least I understood it this way.

What is lightning network?

Think of the phone in the old days. To call and talk to someone you had to open a call with a carrier and she would connect you to the other end. This had a high cost because it was something unexpected that involved various actions and people.

Today, its cost is close to zero when using some messager to connect with another person. This is because you are already connected to the network, just like the other person. You are already connected even if you are not exchanging any information directly. When you need to change some information, this cost is much lower than when calling someone.

In the LN the same occurs. You open a channel and connect to someone using this second layer. Unlike using blockchain directly, your costs will be lower, since you are using this second layer.
1852  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [19-04-2018]Verge Partners With PornHub, Distributes Free Verge To Celebrate on: April 24, 2018, 10:25:11 PM
Historically, pornography has been a pioneer in adopting some technologies. So it was with video cassette, with webcams and even the idea of using tokens to reward other people.

But I do not believe in Verge. It seems to me a project that is extremely centralized and manipulated. It needs partnerships like these since the project itself is as innovative and safe as it claims to be.

Besides, who pays for pornography? The person who is easy to use the internet or the one who has difficulty finding and understand how everything works and decides to pay to have little work?

"was first introduced by Peercoin in 2012"

Após isso ele passa a discutir sobre o PoS. Não diretamente sobre como funciona peerCoin.

1854  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning Network ideal for in-game currency in MMO games? on: April 24, 2018, 06:26:44 AM
As others have said, I believe that many developers will prefer the option of having their own tokens or using other protocols more specific and worked for these situations.

To understand why to use other tokens, just remember the tokens of a casino. They could use cash in casinos. But for a number of reasons, including some related to the psychological, it is better to have own tokens.

Now, the transaction medium between fiat and tokens will definitely be using LN. It is unlikely that the most practical way to acquire game tokens will be with current methods. Bitcoin could be much more easily responsible for this type of integration. And we will still have the huge market of people that neither fiat will have more.

1856  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Will Millions in ETH be Released? on: April 24, 2018, 01:22:34 AM
If I lose all my savings that are in cash under my bed - because I made a silly mistake, or because someone stole it from me - should the state, or the people in my road, or anyone, provide a way for me to recover those funds? If so, it might mean that I could be as careless as I liked because I would always get my money back. So would everyone else. Careful people would in effect be subsidizing the careless. The value of the currency would fall.
