1841  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Getting started running a Bitcoin Core node on: April 03, 2022, 11:14:15 AM
Also, I would love more technical information, like what to think about if you want a high performance node.

Usually it comes to 3 things,
1. Edit bitcoin.conf file. Usually you'd allocate Bitcoin Core to use more RAM.
2. Move chainstate directory to SSD using symbolic link. Alternatively use SSD to store whole blockchain if you have big SSD capacity.
3. Upgrade your hardware.

I want to build everything from scratch so I will compile the Bitcoin Core myself and run it in a Debian installation without GUI.

Check this documentation, https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/doc/build-unix.md. Take note Bitcoin Core use few older version of library (such as Berkeley DB 4.8) so it could be tricky.
1842  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Using BTC on Amazon Store on: April 02, 2022, 11:20:14 AM
I don't think that people are using Purse.io as much as they used to, so you might find a hard time finding someone to fulfill your order.

Especially after the news purse.io was going to be closed[1] which makes people move to different platform. Although they cancel it few months after initial announcement[2].

I would suggest not trying to find a way to purchase from amazon using your bitcoin directly.
But rather you look into getting and using gift cards on their site instead.
Doing it this way you actually save when you do trade your cryptocurrency for these gift cards.
Sometimes up to 20-25%.
There are many sites which do this service when you do pay via a vast number of different cryptos.
The benefit to use purse.io is that you can get a discount. I bought everything with 20-30%. Now show me a single place where I can buy a gift card with a 20-25% discount, as you say, without considering marketplaces in which you can get a stolen voucher, or bought with a stolen card, etc.

Even worse, the gift card might have invalid code or already redeemed. But even the gift card works, it's likely amazon will detect it's stolen and invalidate your transaction/balance or even suspend your account.

Another thing i dont know if anyone brought up but the doc format is kind of proprietary to microsoft and i wouldnt bet on that being readable by any software oneday...

Not completely proprietary though, microsoft partially open .doc specification under Microsoft Open Specification Promise. Although OpenDocument Format (such as .oodt) is better option if you want completely open format.

openoffice can't even read some doc files properly... Huh

FYI, openoffice is very outdated. Check libreoffice instead.

I checked their support page[1] and found out the withdraw fee is 0.00001 BTC (1000 satoshi). While it's 50% cheaper than on-chain withdraw, surely it could be lower. Either way, i agree it's better late than never.

1846  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How to turn a USB Pendrive into a crypto wallet on: April 01, 2022, 09:46:50 AM
Coinomi uses the local appdata folder to store the wallet files and other data
so your wallet isn't even a portable one, but only an executable that runs on a pen drive, the wallet files are actually in the PC where the wallet is created.
Gifting the USB Drive wont give the receiver the funded wallet, at their end, Coinomi will start like it's the first time it's launched.

It's also possible Coinomi won't even start or run properly if it add something to Windows Registry or the installer install different library depending on Windows version.

In that specific use-case, you can use Electrum instead.
I has a "Portable" executable which saves the data directory (including the wallet files) in the same drive where the exe is located.
So if you save Electrum-portable in the USB Drive, the wallets that you'll create with it will be saved there as well.

It's better option, but whoever use it should read this thread Warning about portable versions.
1847  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to accept deposits/payments in 100+ coins ? on: March 31, 2022, 12:40:25 PM
Anything i'm missing over the space ?

How about custodial payment prcoessor/gateway such as https://www.coinpayments.net/? While you don't have control over the token, it's far cheaper than setting nodes/wallet for each altcoin.

I would honestly recommend using BTCPayServer, but it's Bitcoin-only.

There's community modification to support some altcoin though, https://docs.btcpayserver.org/FAQ/Altcoin/#which-coins-does-btcpay-server-support.
1848  Other / Meta / Re: [Merit Source Application] bill gator on: March 31, 2022, 11:57:11 AM
Looking at theymos post[1], there are few posts you chosen older than 2 months and you didn't quote any of selected posts. While i know there are some users who ignore that and become merit source, you might want to make some change.

The posts you chosen are good, although there's small concern you chose post which aimed to promote certain company[2]. I don't know how accurate the analysis of smart contract, but it contains some technical inaccuracy such as "decrypt YOUR blockchain activities". In fact, most cryptocurrency doesn't use encryption, but cryptography signature and hash.

I'm saying is that if I had to pick 10 posts that deserve merit and have none, I wouldn't have picked more than one of Husires'.
You're right about that. Hopefully that doesn't work against me too badly.

Before someone falsely accuse you, you might want to read this thread, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5390179.0. Take note i only mention existence of that thread.

1849  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why 10 min block mining? on: March 31, 2022, 09:48:37 AM
Do you mean P2Pool the decentralized mininig pool? If so, i'm sure it refer to how often the "share" is updated.
I'm a bit confused about that as well. If it chooses a 30s 'block time', that's just the speed of the share chain. It obviously needs to have a difficulty that is much lower than the actual blockchain diff so that miners can regularly submit valid shares.
This doesn't mean that a valid extension of the actual blockchain is found much more quickly, it just means that n'*20=n. Stale blocks aren't a big problem in such a share chain.

Yes, that's what i wanted to mention since the change doesn't happen on Bitcoin on-chain layer and IMO it's different from what OP asked.

Arbitrary choice, it's unlikely satoshi performed research about effect block propagation on different block time.
Partly that, but in the whitepaper, Satoshi did mention it as a measurement for calculation of RAM/disk space requirements. It can be that as arbitrary as "10 minute block time "is believed to be, it might really be based on the current hardware available of that time when he wrote the whitepaper.

It's plausible explanation, but difference between best case (block header with no TX) and average storage/RAM in 2008 is too wide.
1850  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Migrating OS; Bitcoin Core from Win to Linux on: March 29, 2022, 11:52:14 AM
  • Could you share your personal take on running Bitcoin node on Linux?

As regular Linux user, i have easy time running Bitcoin node on Linux and i never encounter problem due to Linux.

  • Can I use the Windows version of blockchain data in Linux? Or do I have to download it all over after switching OS?

You can use the same blocks data as the data should be the same. I'm not sure if it still needs to reindex though wehn you move the data directory (some files might be incompatible - particularly since Linux relies heavily on assigning files permissions and windows relies on assigning them to the user).

Based on my past experience, there's no problem with file/directory permission when i move from Windows to Linux.

  • Could you share your personal take on running Bitcoin node on Linux?

If you've not used Linux much, you might find it difficult to use. I think a lot of people struggle with the initial dependencies and some parts of the install (like database versions) can be confusing to understand for some distros (which one did you plan to use)?

Might be true with other application. But Bitcoin Core on linux is easy to use. You just need to download archive file, extract it and double click bitcoin-qt.
1851  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Looking for a way to add extra security on: March 29, 2022, 11:33:07 AM
Store your seeds in .doc .zip or .rar file do look extra secure with strong password, but the truth isn't. Those software offer bad and low encryption, you don't even have any idea how those software compress your file isn't?

To be fair, most people doesn't know how encryption or compress actually works even if it's open source. But i agree those software usually have weak encryption.

If you want to encrypt your seeds to add extra security, better to learn and use BIP38 rather than "trusting" those closed source software.

BIP 38 is intended for private key. I doubt there are any user-friendly software which let you use seed/mnemonic phrase as input (rather than private key).
1852  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Methods of decoding a bitcoin block stored in windows on: March 28, 2022, 12:23:28 PM
Secondly the blocks are not 1MB they are like 127MB.
How do block explorer or a normal person decode this information from these blocks?
Thanks in advance.

I'd like to mention Bitcoin protocol doesn't specify how you store blockchain on your device. If you use different full node software (Bitcoin Core isn't the only one), it's possible they store blockchain differently.

If you mean decoding the block and such, honestly the best tool is just using Bitcoin Core which you seem to have installed.
But if you want to decode individual blk files, I found this small program that might do the trick!

python-bitcoin-blockchain-parser]This repository actually looks a bit better to me, since it has more features and it's Python 3-based so you won't need to compile it!

Those script haven't updated in a while, so i have concern it can't parse taproot transaction/block correctly. Bitcoin Core is safer option unless OP willing to test those script and also offer to return raw hex of the block.

Code:
getblock [HASH_OF_THE_BLOCK] 0
1853  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Looking for a way to add extra security on: March 28, 2022, 10:11:05 AM
Guys is it safe to write down recovery phrases in a .doc file and use WinZip or Winrar to compress and add strong password to the file? I don't know if this is stupid or smart.
It's not safe for a number of reasons. The data for the unprotected seed phrase will still exist on your hard drive, even if you immediately delete it, and could be fairly easily recovered later. You are trusting that the computer you use it on is clean and free of malware. You are trusting the encryption implementation of WinZip. You are trusting the storage medium you are using.

And there are few additional risk such as,
1. The .doc editor and compression tool store the unencrypted data as temporary file which sometimes not deleted automatically.
2. The OS infected by keylogger or clipboard malware.
1854  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How secured is fingerprint lock on wallet? on: March 28, 2022, 10:03:54 AM
As replacement of password/PIN? It would weaken security of your wallet/seed.
As additional lock option (such as from PIN to fingerprint and PIN)? It would increase the security, although the benefit is rather small when the attacker have physical access to your phone and your finger (e.g. when you sleep or drunk).

Personally i wouldn't bother use fingerprint to secure my device.
1855  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.2.0 not supporting Windows 7 on: March 27, 2022, 12:52:36 PM
I checked recent discussion at GitHub[1] and found out it's possible Windows 7 will be supported again if there's contributor willing to do it. What do you think?

Because the ~10-15 year old HDD on my Xubuntu box has a bad sector which occasionally corrupts the file system. I had to make a dual-boot on it just to run fsck quickly to repair the errors.

First of all, why do you use HDD with bad sector to store the OS (and important files)?

Strangely, CentOS is having none of these errors (or at least not any that I can see).

Some distro configure fsck to perform file check on boot and perform repair when needed. I don't know if CentOS have such behavior, but it wouldn't be surprising since it's useful for server. You also can configure it easily by modifying systemd-fsck[2].

is safe to keep bitcoin core ?

Assuming you download it from legit source (such as bitcoin.org[1] or bitcoincore.org[2]) and verify the hash/signature, it is safe to use Bitcoin Core. It is known that some antivirus make false positive report on cryptocurrency[3].

1857  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.2.0 not supporting Windows 7 on: March 25, 2022, 10:12:47 AM
I posted this on this thread for more people to see this before deciding to updrage to Electrum version 4.2.0. If you are not using Windows 8.1, 10 or 10 Pro. Consider to upgrade your Windows OS, or use any other lastest desktop OS Electrum is supporting

Windows 8.1 only supported until Jan 10, 2023[1] though (about 9 months left). IMO upgrade directly to Windows 10 is better option unless you bother reinstall OS more frequently where you also need to reinstall all software, relogin to all online account and move your personal files. Of course moving to linux is better from security and privacy point view.

1858  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Can Bitcoin Mixer services be trusted? on: March 24, 2022, 11:30:07 AM
4) How can minimize the collection of personal information by mixers?

Use Tor Browser. But if you're willing to use terminal with Tor/VPN with some trial and error, you can make POST request so the mixer have no information about your browser/OS.

5) What other weaknesses and vulnerabilities are there in the scheme "your address 1 - mixer - your address 2"?

Under the hood, usually it's more complex than "Your Address 1 - Mixer Address - Your Address 2". But the weakness heavily depends on how mixer mix user coin and user behavior. You might want to check Breaking Mixing Services.

i have seen a big increase in visitors recently (6k unique visitors and 55k request every month)

i am thinking about somehow to monetize this website, i willl try to rent a space to some companies. i will try to announce in the service board.

sugggestions regarding this are welcome.

May I suggest you don't turn the page into an endless series of meaningless advertisements raping our eyes.

Actually i don't mind advertising if,
1. The ads doesn't take too much space without any popup.
2. The ads limited to static image only with generic/basic tracking URL (similar with Bitcointalk ads). The image should be stored on your own domain/server.

1860  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Can Quantum Computer's destroy Blockchain and Bitcoins[SHA-256 specifically] on: March 23, 2022, 12:02:59 PM
Another problem is these Post Quantum algorithms aren't really vetted in the sense like AES encryption is or say Elliptic Curve is. They dont have decades of trying to crack them so they might even be vulnerable to a normal computer to say nothing of a Quantum Computer. Bitcoin might be better off sticking to what it has than going with a shiny new object that ends up being cracked by a pentium 4 laptop running for a weekend or two.

Such risk could be significantly reduced with proper cryptography and implementation audit. Besides, Bitcoin is quite conservative where new feature took very long time of testing.

There's nothing magic about post quantum crypto it's still a game of cat and mouse. No one can prove anything... Angry As long as they keep trying to rely on complexity, they're in trouble. Complexity should be in quotation marks that is.

Cryptography has always been "game of cat and mouse". There's good reason why cryptography software (such as pgp) generate key with expiration date.
