2101  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 51% Attack on: August 06, 2021, 10:45:26 AM
The interesting part is that Craig Wright will probably threat people with legal cease and desist letters for those using mining power for the 51% attack.

Along with service (such as NiceHash) if the attacker use those service and BSV developer for not preventing the attack (Faketoshi already sue BTC, BCH and BSV for different reason).

Quote from: PrimeNumber7
You have to factor in the block rewards you would receive if you were 51%'ing BSV, which is around $135k/day.
If you are doing something like this you probably don't want any money trail looping back to you or your operation.
Just make that chain / coin useless until it goes away. If you have the money to do this and if my $450,000 number was accurate getting $135,000 back which although a non insignificant amount of money might not be worth it based on the risk / reward. Faketoshi loves his lawsuits. If the coins go nowhere, you can't trace who to sue. Although, it would be funny as hell if they just kept moving, splitting and combining them to make them waste time chasing them.

-Dave

Or the coins used to taint all address and strees the network.
2102  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's blockchain size on: August 06, 2021, 09:23:49 AM
Fair point, but there are 2 alternative if you insist to run full node
1. Use pruned node. Bitcoin Core still download and verify whole blockchain, but only keep few thousand last block.
But it wouldn’t be that beneficial to the network. The blockchain must be made as redundant as possible for the new generation of Bitcoiners. If you have the hardware, store the whole blockchain.

See @DannyHamilton reply, except pruned-node only share last few thousand block. Additionally more ways to run full node (even if it's pruned node) is better than nothing.

Quote
2. Trust third party which prepare pruned snapshot such as https://github.com/ez-org/eznode.
There are another alternative such as UTXO commitment, but so far there's no interest to implement it on Bitcoin.
ALL users should rather run a pruned node, and validate everything themselves.

True, i never say it's ideal or good option.
2103  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: A strange idea of labeling bitcoins on: August 04, 2021, 11:19:55 AM
they've got it already, they can sign any data and put it in their block reward transaction.
And this fact immediately offers to solve many applicative, including technical problems.  In what applications is this already used?  After all, you can do interesting things with this feature.
For example, sub-chains without pre-mining, but with PoS, in which coins are also mined by bitcoin miners, in case they freeze their bitcoins in these sub-chains for a certain number of bitcoin blocks (the lifetime set by the protocol of this sub-chain), on some kind of smart contracts.
I wonder if this has not been implemented anywhere yet.

OP_RETURN already have some usage, such as
1. Colored coins. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Colored_Coins
2. Connecting to side chain. https://blog.omni.foundation/2019/07/16/omni-state-of-the-layer/
3. Storing IPFS hash. https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/a/81449

And some other usage which i don't bother to mention.
2104  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Need a large amount of Testnet coins on: August 04, 2021, 08:59:57 AM
The whole point of Bitcoin testnet coins are them to be worth nothing so you can test with them. You shouldn't be able to sell them, I don' think that's the point.

But loaning tBTC is different from selling it. While loaning tBTC itself it very controversial, there are few acceptable excuse such as preventing tBTC usage to claim altcoin/token and there's cost to mine tBTC.

I sent 2.06702067 testnet bitcoins over to @mocacinno - if you head over to the Lending Section, you might be able to make a case for lending a large amount (providing you offer up collateral in exchange).

Given testnet bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash have a near identical logo, I'm wondering what the sudden interest in testnet bitcoins is?

Aside from what @pooya87 said, it's not sudden. It already happens at least 1 year ago, few possible example

2105  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Who determines bitcoin transaction fees? on: August 01, 2021, 09:03:49 AM
1) Bitcoin base layer - Who determines the bitcoin transaction fees? Is it the sender? For example, if the sender wants to increase the likelihood of miners including the senders transaction into the candidate block, then the sender can set a higher fee to compensate the miner?

Yes, it's the sender. But take Bitcoin node usually won't broadcast transaction with fee lower than 1 sat/vbyte, so in practice sender can't set fee lower than 1 sat/vbyte.

If this is the case, then how come most of the common exchanges have a fixed bitcoin withdrawal fee (usually around 0.0004 bitcoin or around $20), which I am unable to change?

Usually it's because exchange take profit from withdraw exchange. Only small portion of the exchange withdraw fee goes to bitcoin transaction fee, but usually high enough to ensure fast transaction confirmation.

2) Lightning network - If A wants to send to D and it appears that the only way to construct a route from A to D is if A goes through the payment channels A -> B -> C -> D, then does that mean in order for B and C to act as "intermediaries", they must be compensated by transaction fees?

No, B and C can choose to route the transaction without any fee.

And if so, does that mean if we have A -> B -> C -> ... -> Z, then transaction fees would be really higher, potentially higher than if A sent directly to Z via Bitcoin base layer?

Theoretically it's possible, but most LN wallet will choose route with lowest you and will warn you if the routing fee is higher than specific threshold.

And how are these transaction fees determined within the lightning network?

It depends on each node.
2106  Local / Mining (Bahasa Indonesia) / Re: Hard disk/SSD miner on: August 01, 2021, 08:33:56 AM

2107  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Tutorial] How To Access Bitcointalk using TOR Browser on: July 31, 2021, 08:29:56 AM
There are other browsers like Opera and Firefox that generally disable tracking cookies and advertisement. Opera also has free VPN which can be used through Private window, you can fool the ISP and the government at the same time.
AFAIK, firefox doesn't disable cookies in the first place, further configuration like adding an add on is necessary to do it.

Wrong, Firefox already do it by default. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enhanced-tracking-protection-firefox-desktop#w_what-enhanced-tracking-protection-blocks.

Also, a free VPN is a no go. Even Opera free VPN claim they have a no-log policy. We can't know for sure what is happening behind it. I also can't find any reference about whether Opera VPN has done an independent audit or not.

According to https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn/reviews/opera-vpn/, Opera VPN does collect and sell your data.

Correct, it's mentioned on website's about page (https://bitcoinelectrum.com/about/).
2109  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [LockBox-LBX] Created a Hardened Linux OS for Crypto Hodlers on: July 30, 2021, 08:54:43 AM
Although Tails already exist, your distro could fill different user base. But here are few suggestion

1. Publish the source code of your distro, otherwise you would violate Elementary's GPLv3 license (according to https://github.com/elementary/os/blob/master/LICENSE)
2. Remove Google Chrome, it's privacy nightmare. Brave or Ungoogled chromium is acceptable if user wish to visit website which doesn't support Firefox.
3. Add Tor Browser.
4. I don't know if Elementary OS already have this feature, but add option to encrypt the partition during system installation.
5. Add password manager such as KeePassXC.
2110  Other / Meta / Re: Check out RainbowKun's article to see if forums really need depth knowledge. on: July 29, 2021, 11:11:04 AM
What kind of knowledge is most popular in our forum?

I have no idea, but i prefer something like this Breaking Mixing Services.

I'd like to take a simple poll, where you can write your real thoughts and discuss the topic further.

1. I have never read RainbowKun's articles, and I am not interested in his articles.
2. I often see RainbowKun's articles, but his articles are just word wall, which is hard to read.
3. The ideas in his articles are very original, but often difficult to understand.
4. The forum was flooded with so many low-quality articles that I had a hard time finding anything worthwhile.
5. I don't want to answer too complex questions, which will consume more energy.
6. I randomly read forum topics and reply to any post I see.

7. I have read some RainbowKun's articles, but usually I am not interested in his articles.
2111  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Btcrecover Speed Question on: July 29, 2021, 09:36:32 AM
btcrecover documentation have some benchmark at
1. https://btcrecover.readthedocs.io/en/latest/GPU_Acceleration/#performance-notes
2. https://btcrecover.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Usage_Examples/2020-10-06_Multi-GPU_with_vastai/Example_Multi-GPU_with_vastai/#performance

4x 2080ti have 16 kP/s, so the 8x RTX 3090 should be faster than 20 kP/s. However, i suggest you to run exactly same command on documentation to obtain better comparison.

Code:
python3 btcrecover.py --wallet ./btcrecover/test/test-wallets/bitcoincore-wallet.dat --performance --enable-gpu --global-ws 4096 --local-ws 256
2112  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Suggested resources for technical understanding of Bitcoin on: July 28, 2021, 11:00:34 AM
Jameson Lopp website has list of technical Bitcoin resource at https://www.lopp.net/bitcoin-information/technical-resources.html. You might able to find resource which suitable for you.

I started reading "Mastering Bitcoin" by Andreas Antonipolous but it's a bit too dense (and too long around 500 pages).

Don't try to read whole book at once, consider reading each it chapter by chapter.
2113  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I can't get my private key on: July 26, 2021, 12:10:07 PM
I tried creating to reproduce the problem (by enable "descriptor wallet" and "encrypt wallet" when creating new wallet) and managed to reproduce the problem. It happens because Bitcoin Core doesn't support such command for descriptor wallet according to https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/doc/descriptors.md.
2114  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Tutorial] How To Access Bitcointalk using TOR Browser on: July 25, 2021, 09:20:31 AM
The tutorial is very simple, i would suggest you to add image or mention using bridge (if TOR is blocked on place where the reader live).

I know your problem is captcha, when successful login in 5 minutes, go to captcha page > https://bitcointalk.org/captcha_code.php

You might need to switch circuit to be able to complete the reCAPTCHA. You can do it by using shortcut "Ctrl+Shift+L" or click menu icon and click "New Tor Circuit for this Site"
2115  Economy / Reputation / Re: Mycelium Wallet Promoting Scam Bookies 1xbit.com on: July 25, 2021, 09:17:17 AM
...snip...
They dedicated a tap ( cryptobetting) on their wallet to 1xbit.com and they also have a promotional code that gives 125% on first deposit to new users who register using the code "Mycelium", they are not only paid to advertise but it seems like they are in partnership with 1xbit.com. money is powerful if you ask me. I don't know what options this belong to but Mycelium are fully aware of the advertisement and reporting to them would lead to nowhere.

Check the upper part of the image.

If there's promo code which refer to mycelium, then only 2nd/3rd option possible. But since Mycelium have decent reputation, it's possible they didn't do proper research. Unfortunately they don't use social media (according to https://wallet.mycelium.com/#support), so there's no way to ask about it and get answer publicly.
2116  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Greenlight by Blockstream on: July 22, 2021, 11:14:17 AM
Just how many cryptocurrency wallet Blocksteam have? There are Blockstream Green and Aqua, now they also have Greenlight wallet.

Simple recovery: Losing your phone at sea won’t mean losing your bitcoin. Since we manage the database and the backups, recovering the funds is as simple as initiating a new front-end with your seed phrase.

Hopefully this part is true since recovering Blockstream Green (or Green Wallet) was known to be difficult (mainly because multi-signature scheme and locktime).
2117  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Generation of priv/pub in given range.. on: July 22, 2021, 10:20:03 AM
Assuming you actually mean range of private key, here's a dumb Python script created by myself which generate compressed public key and using all CPU cores.

Code:
from fastecdsa import keys, curve
import multiprocessing

start = 0x1
end = 0xF

f = open('pubkey.txt', 'w')
def do(private):
    public = keys.get_public_key(int(private), curve.secp256k1)
    public_str = '02' + str(hex(public.x)).lstrip('0x') + '\n'
    f.write(public_str)
    f.flush()

p = multiprocessing.Pool(multiprocessing.cpu_count())
p.map(do, range(start, end))

I tried it with Python 3.8 and fastecdsa 2.1.5, here's the result

Problem (title): "Cloud" mining service detected!
Problem (discussion):
Well I don't know if you have the same itching that I have when I see some cloud mining service popping up. I don't have a problem with the campaign itself since it is managed by yahoo which is a reputable member but with the lack of information I got trying to figure out details and reviews about the service. I didn't find also a topic here about it, if anyone could find it, you can share it with us. Basically you can buy a contract from many options provided, cheaper ones for less than 7 days are sold out and the others start from +$400 for 1-2 years.. Site created 3 years ago? Service is in Kazakhstan? Should it be trusted? Should members here support a cloud mining service and wear its signature? I am raising a red flag until I have a clearer vision of the situation..
Their website is about 3 years old. There are a lot of red flags on their website. They don't appear to have any presence on bitcointalk, but appear to occasionally market themselves here.

I posted in the sig campaign thread, asking yahoo about his due diligence, but he has yet to respond.

Using criteria from ▁ ▂ ▄ ▅ ▆ Cloudmining 101 (ponzi risk assessment) ▆ ▅ ▄ ▂ ▁, there are few red flags. But i would advice strong precaution.

1) No public mining address / no user selectable pool.
No?. Looks like you can choose any mining pool, but i can't verify it without buying/rent something.

2) No endorsement from any asic vendor
Yes.

3) No relevant pictures of their hardware and datacenter
Yes? There's no relevant image found using this keyword on Google/DDG image search.

Code:
site:xive.io

4) Open ended IPO / fractional reverse mining risk
Yes?, although there's limit of available ASIC/contract, but there's no way to verify it since i didn't find any relevant picture of their hardware and datacenter.

5) Referral programs and social networking
No? There's no relevant page found using this keyword on Google/DDG.

Code:
site:xive.io refferal

6) Anonymous operators
Yes. I can't even find "About us" or "Legal" page.

7) No exit strategy
Yes? The FAQ doesn't mention it's possible to sell the contract/ASIC.

8) Bonus point for "guaranteed profit"
No. All i can find is Bitcoin Mining Profitability Calculator.
2119  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Best WordPress plugin to accept BTC payments on Woocommerce? on: July 21, 2021, 09:42:40 AM
You can fully host it yourself.

Alternatively, there's third-party (https://docs.btcpayserver.org/ThirdPartyHosting/) which host and configure BTCpay for you. But obviously you need to trust them not to do anything stupid or malicious.

There are also "nodes in a box" like raspiblitz https://github.com/rootzoll/raspiblitz  and  mynode  https://www.mynodebtc.com/ that have it as an addon.

Take note BTCpay on myNode require premium edition (which cost $99).

I was able to sign and verify, however, when trying to sign and verify on the form provided by bitcoin.com

Are you talking about bitcoin.com wallet or this page (https://tools.bitcoin.com/verify-message/)? If you're talking about second one, take note bitcoin.com doesn't support Bech32 address (it's detected as invalid address).
