1881  Other / Off-topic / Re: What is the safest way I can upload an image on the forum? on: March 10, 2022, 12:07:54 PM
I want to upload images in a thread but can not seem to find a way to upload them safely.  My browser is running through Tor with JavaScript disabled at all times for security and privacy purposes.  An image hosting website allowing NoJs is perfect, or maybe someone has a better idea.  Does anyone have a suggestion for me?

It's difficult to find website which works without JS these days. Have you considered using Sandbox (using different Tor Browser executable) or setup Linux VM instead?

I don't know what operating system you are using Windows or Linux, but there is nice little open source software called Image Uploader.
It is working for windows os by default or with wine for Linux, and it has more than 30 hosting providers, URL shortening, Screenshots and many custom settings.
For posting in bitcointalk and other forums you should choose option Forum code (BBCode):
https://github.com/zenden2k/image-uploader

I didn't know such tool exist. While it's very neat tool and also offer CLI verison, last release for compiled version was on 2019[1] and source code of CLI version was last updated on 2016[2]. OP need to do some testing whether it still works.

1882  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Alternative way to set up bitcoin core without downloading the full blockchain? on: March 10, 2022, 11:32:23 AM
because pruned nodes are unnecessary and hold no value to the network or even the user.

That's not true, pruned nodes still have value on network by sharing recent transaction/blocks. And from business side, pruned node is useful to accept Bitcoin payment or help manage LN channel without rely on 3rd party at lower cost. Self-hosted solution such as BTCPayServer support pruned node and it's even default option on their docker guide.

1884  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Complete!] Bitcoin block data (550 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 10, 2022, 09:43:40 AM
Why?

Because i wanted to test whether DHT works.

And how? When I open a torrent in Transmission, it just starts and doesn't ask to remove trackers.

On qbittorrent-nox, you can choose not to start torrent after adding it. It has tracker tab where you can remove each tracker manually.

I'm used to only downloading Torrents with many seeders, and those usually start within seconds. I have no idea why this takes so long. The Seedbox doesn't seem to lack capacity.

I have no idea either, but the weird thing is "transaction" torrent start within few seconds.

CLI? Even though I use CLI for most things, I've never used it for Torrent.

I only use CLI to start the program, qbittorrent-nox offer web UI.
1885  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and MimbleWimble on: March 09, 2022, 09:33:38 AM
"1" is out, unless you can convince the community to go through another "war/debate" again.

Block size increase isn't the only way for 1st option, although it's just matter of time before it's increased. Here's an example, Did you know bitcoin uses 6 different ways to represent integers.

"3" is sidechains/Drivechains? That's out too

If you include sidechain as 3rd option, there are many Bitcoin sidechain out there. The only problem is lack of adaption because no one bother promote it and lack of user friendly software.

"2" is the only option.

I'll just quote chapter 10 of LN paper.

If we presume that a decentralized payment network exists and one user will make 3 blockchain transactions per year on average, Bitcoin will be able 52 to support over 35 million users with 1MB blocks in ideal circumstances (assuming 2000 transactions/MB, or 500 bytes/Tx). This is quite limited, and an increase of the block size may be necessary to support everyone in the world using Bitcoin. A simple increase of the block size would be a hard fork, meaning all nodes will need to update their wallets if they wish to participate in the network with the larger blocks.
While it may appear as though this system will mitigate the block size increases in the short term, if it achieves global scale, it will necessitate a block size increase in the long term. Creating a credible tool to help prevent blockchain spam designed to encourage transactions to timeout becomes imperative.
1886  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen to the Bitcoin network if Russia blocks access to the internet? on: March 08, 2022, 12:23:26 PM
The Russian miners would either stop mining altogether or continue to mine on their own minority chain.

Mining would be impossible since their hashrate percentage is rather small. But it's different case if someone propose hard fork which add Emergency Difficulty Adjustment (EDA).

What is far more likely is that there would still be a handful of nodes which could still communicate to both sides of the divide, and so the whole network would stay in sync.

I agree, i expect there are few brave people who risk using satellite internet (which is harder to be blocked/controlled).

In your own opinion, would offchain layers be the best path forward for Bitcoin?
Well, you have three options:

1) scale on-chain
2) scale off-chain
3) invent another way of scaling things

If #1 is not the way to go for BTC, then your only choice is #2, unless you have some idea for #3.

4) Use option 1 - 3 altogether
1888  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is it possible to let a transaction expire if it is not included in a block. on: March 08, 2022, 11:55:43 AM
Even if it's possible, wouldn't such transaction have some vulnerability (especially when range between current and desired block height is very small)?
1. Pool owner could not include it until it's deemed invalid.
2. If you set very low fee (and didn't enable RBF) when mempool flooded with lots of transaction, it could take long time before it's confirmed.
1889  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Complete!] Bitcoin block data (550 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 08, 2022, 11:07:04 AM
how do you create the torrent?
I have a Seedbox at PulsedMedia.com, which by default uses ruTorrent. I clicked "Create Torrent", selected the data, and added some trackers that I found in other torrents. Then, I set the Piece size as large as possible (16 MB, because it's 50+ GB of data). After a couple of minutes, it was ready and I could save the .torrent file.

1. ruTorrent (which use rTorrent as backend) is reliable (according to discussion on different forum), although it's development has slowed down in past 3 years. However it should able to create torrent without problem.
2. You might want to check this thread about torrent piece size, https://torrentinvites.org/f29/piece-size-guide-167985/.
3. Take note not all tracker accept any kind of torrent.

Quote
In past i used mktorrent (to create torrent) and qbittorrent (on both server and client to upload/download) to transfer data due to unstable connection on my end. I don't use any tracker, but i disable private flag so i could use DHT. However, my data size was smaller.
When creating the torrent, ruTorrent doesn't have the option to use DHT.

Really? It's weird since rTorrent (the backend) support DHT. Can you use different tool (which support DHT) on your Seedbox?
1890  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A Disadvantage of Bitcoin Talk Forum and Crypto with the Cost of Smart Phone on: March 06, 2022, 09:57:47 AM
I still have >5 years old Smartphones I am sometimes navigating on and they work flawlessly even today, even with 1 GB RAM and 4 to 8 GB internal memory.  What do you mean by not being able to navigate the Web?

I was thinking that as well, 1GB is sufficient for web browsing. In fact, Bitcointalk uses far less CPU resource and bandwidth compared with most "modern" website (especially free news website) which contain lots of ads, tracker and javascript.

But if OP smartphone and internet connection isn't decent enough to browse this forum, he can use WAP version at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?;wap.
1891  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Charging rent on the bitcoin network, is that a bad idea? on: March 05, 2022, 11:14:33 AM
I would say it's not good idea/not necessary for following reason,
1. Most people deemed current node amount is still sufficient. At time of writing this post, Bitnodes report there are 15113 reachable nodes[1] while Luke Jr stats (which include node which doesn't enable incoming connection) report there are about 50K nodes[2].
2. Increasing complexity of Bitcoin protocol.
3. Add more burden for Bitcoin contributor (whether it's on protocol or implementation level).

1892  Other / Archival / Re: Complex password is the key to security on: March 05, 2022, 10:06:53 AM
--snip--

In any case, I'm not trying to say "use small passwords" but the point is that you should also try to take a look at what algorithm you are using. I'd say a 10-char long BIP38 encryption password is a pretty strong one since you'd need a tremendous amount of computing power to break it.

While i agree with flaws of the chart, how many people know the name of used algorithm (let alone how secure is it)? Using longer password by default is safer option, especially for website which need to consider available CPU resource.
1893  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Open source stack to build your own lightning node on: March 04, 2022, 11:09:32 AM
Here's a list of projects that you can use to create your own lightning node. Every part of this stack is completely open source so you can customize it however you want.
...

I recommend looking at established Lightning node projects such as RaspiBolt, RaspiBlitz, and Umbrel.

While Umbrel has been around for some time with decent user, don't forget the developer doesn't consider Umbrel secure enough.

Umbrel is currently in beta and is not considered secure.

We are trying to iterate rapidly and build out our vision and only have so many hours in the day. Due to this, we've decided to make the following trade-offs to allow us to ship a working beta with critical features, such as over-the-air (OTA) updates and easy log access, as soon as possible.

Umbrel is still in an early stage and things are expected to break every now and then. We DO NOT recommend running it on mainnet with real money just yet, unless you want to be really #reckless.
1894  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Error opening block database on: March 03, 2022, 11:45:13 AM
Description of Problem:
I downloaded BISQ and in order to use my node I had to switch to unpruned mode. This required me to redownload the blockchain. However on reloading Bitcoin Core I get Error opening block database. Please advise what steps I need to take.

Do you plan to run your own unpruned Bitcoin full node because you have very serious privacy concern? If no, just let Bisq connect to nodes run by trusted Bisq contributors (which is the default behavior)[1]. Bisq use Tor by default anyway[2]. But if you do, follow @jackg suggestion and prepare lots of free storage space. I would recommend at least 600GB free since Bitcoin blockchain size growing rather fast.

1895  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and MimbleWimble on: March 03, 2022, 09:51:15 AM
I remember someone found a flaw in this protocol so it never gained much popularity with Bitcoin developers, and I don't consider Litecoin devs serious according to their very low github activity.

Are you referring to misleading article which claim Grin MimbleWimble is broken[1]? While some of details is true, it's misleading article[2][3].

I don't really see it added to Bitcoin though

Not unless they want to make bitcoin the new monero. Grin

Even with MimbleWimble, Bitcoin can't beat Monero in terms of privacy. Bitcoin would need to implement additional technology such as Ring Confidential Transaction (RingCT) with Bulletproof or zkSNACKs and make it mandatory. But since it require hard fork and massively increase transaction size, i doubt anyone would support it.

1896  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and MimbleWimble on: March 02, 2022, 11:20:42 AM
I recently came across an article about Litecoin implementing MimbleWimble which I believe was planned for BTC for a couple of years now.

So I'm curious, do you guys have any information about when to expect this upgrade and whether there are some other (maybe better) privacy protocols on the work?

Here's short version of what i know, CMIIW.

1. There's no MimbleWimble implementation proposal on Bitcoin network[1].
2. Dandelion has some weakness and it's pull request was rejected[2] due to security concern[3]. Dandelion succeed by Dandelion++, but there aren't many serious discussion about implementing it[4].
3. PLTC (which aimed to replace HLTC by using Taproot) is still on early draft[5] and i don't expect it'll be ready in this year.
4. BIP 151[6] which aim to encrypt connection between nodes has been withdrawn and it's implementation on Bitcoin Core has been stopped[7]. It's successor (BIP 324) still in WIP[8].

1897  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crypto wallets surpassed banks already but you need to know this on: March 02, 2022, 09:44:06 AM
wallets like the following shouldn't be on your list

1. Freewallet

FYI, there are 2 wallet with very similar name. The one who should avoid is "Freewallet", which can be found at freewallet[dot]org. The other one is "FreeWallet" which located at https://freewallet.io/. While it's open source, there aren't many people who use it, so IMO it shouldn't your primary option.
1898  Other / Meta / Re: Stake your Bitcoin address here on: March 01, 2022, 12:16:05 PM

Thanks, I appreciate. Is there a reason why a signed message will verify in a wallet and fail in another?

Not many support the segwit bech32 address verification.

And each wallet have their own standard to sign/verify message with Bech32 address. Last time i checked, Electrum and Trezor have different standard to do it. While there are 2 BIP to standardize it, i don't know whether any of them is widely adopted today.
1899  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Node - DB47 4.7 - available? on: March 01, 2022, 11:52:39 AM
If you create and use the wallet before Bitcoin-Qt 0.4.0, it's very likely the wallet IS NOT encrypted. While it pose security risk, it also means you could simply extract the private key from wallet.dat file and import it to up-to-date Bitcoin wallet software.

If you own device which use linux, you could install db-util package which contain db_dump software which could be used to extract the private key.
1900  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Russian mixers, might this be a problem? on: March 01, 2022, 11:35:29 AM
But, I have found that even rudimentary blockchain analysis techniques can pick up the fact that you have used a mixer.  And likely the chain analysis firms can track the country where the mixer operates.  Also, there are clues that can be sussed-out from the mixers' websites and/or commentaries.

This might become, very soon perhaps, a problem for users of mixers.

What kind of problem user could face if they use mixer which operated from russia rather than another mixer (which operated from different country or unknown location)? Most centralized service already blacklist coin which comes from any kind of mixer/coinjoin.
