1981  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US health care mandate (Obamacare) on: October 22, 2013, 03:54:30 PM

Interestingly, from an economic point of view, this is an internal transfer so its harmless.  Wealth is being transferred within the US population and a huge chunk of the US deficit is a simple subsidy going to the drug and device patent holders.

If the patent system is the problem, why not reform that?

Agree but that is not on the agenda.  The mandate vs. a single payer system are the only 2 options that are politically possible.

What about mandate, with a ban on employee provided insurance? Make everyone pay for the entire coverage directly I.e. instead of employer paying for $500 of your insurance without you even knowing, have them give you a $500 raise, and let you go out and pick something. If we go in this direction, we may even end up moving into a more free-market health coverage system, and really drive down costs, which are mostly hidden from view now.
1982  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US health care mandate (Obamacare) on: October 22, 2013, 03:50:32 PM
Bump your head overseas and you are checked by a doctor manually (but thoroughly) for severity and if it looks minor you are done.  If it is major then you are scanned if available.  Bump your head in the USA and more often then not you will be scanned costing nearly $1000 because if anything happens are you were not scanned it is the basis for a lawsuit.

I'd say the problem here is more with the costs being hidden in insurance, and moreso by employer-covered insurance portion, than with lawsuits. If, instead of doctors being worried about being sued and doing whatever they can to an unwitting patient whose insurance is willing to pay for whatever, the doctor actually gave the patient a direct option to either bill them $50 for a check, or $1,000 for a scan, the patient would take their own risks into consideration, and may forgo the more expensive option on their own, in which case the doctor's liability will also be limited, since it was the patient who made that decision.
1983  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Online quiz to see if you are more "left, right, Authoritarian or Libertarian" on: October 22, 2013, 03:36:02 PM
Out of curiosity, how many people are just now finding out they're libertarian?  Really, I think most people, especially those who don't want to involve themselves in popular politics, will find they're libertarian; anyone who simply believes in being and letting be counts as a good person to me.  The only difference is whether the person self-identifies as libertarian or not; considering the amount of dissenters toward the increasingly authoritarian America, it is quite easy to see, we at least generally agree that we don't want what's become.

The problem is that there's the libertarian "let people smoke pot if they want I don't care" and there's the libertarian "let people die in the streets if they don't have money to eat I don't care".  The latter keeps most people from identifying with libertarianism.

"I don't care" is not what it is.

It is: "It's not my responsibility and of I choose to do anything about it, this should be out of my own free will instead of mandated by some retarded centralized state people like to call my country."

I think it is more along the lines of, "I think the way to solve problems is not by using force and violence of the inefficient state welfare, but voluntary charity programs that help people who are in need and do not have other options.

Didn't want to feel left out, so I'll chime in  Grin

I think it's mostly: if you keep removing consequences, people will not learn to avoid bad decisions, and will become dependent on you having to remove more and more consequences. Right up to the point where you have no more means to remove consequences, and it all breaks down in protests, riots, and an economy in shambles.
1984  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: announcement: the international "when-bitcoin-reaches 1000,- $ party" on: October 22, 2013, 03:29:31 PM
I'm a little concerned about the amount of BTC that will be converted to fiat to make this party happen. We should be working on getting vendors/caterers/venues/entertainers/hotels/taxis/limos/restaurants/bars in the area to start accepting bitcoins as payment.

That's a good point, but likely not that much of a concern. For one, there is already enough volume on the markets to absorb about $100k  a day without much pain, and that will only improve once BTC is worth $1,000. And two, we won't be spendiing the entire $1mil all in one day. If this is a correctly planned out party, there will be expenses and payments well before and a while after the party as well. Though it would be kinda funny if BTC hits $1,000, all the party bills are agreed on to be paid after the party is over, and as soon as the party is done, all the bill payments drive the price back down to under $1,000
1985  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: announcement: the international "when-bitcoin-reaches 1000,- $ party" on: October 22, 2013, 03:20:54 PM
Sounds cool. After all we probably will be the new wealthy elite.

Speak for yourself. I have no money and no bitcoins... <.<   >.>
1986  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet on: October 21, 2013, 10:51:05 PM
I have a development suggestion. How about adding a CoinJoin mixing option to Mycelium wallet? That would be an excellent feature. Similar to what Blockchain.info is doing with their sharedcoin trustless mixing right now. What do you guys think about this idea? These sort of features are a must if we want to continue to protect the privacy of Bitcoin users.

i think it is an excellent idea. and the idea works even better if it is the default mode of operation. the question where to get the resources for implementing this.

Aren't you guys already running Mycelium servers?

Btw, I didn't look into CoinJoin too closely (hadn't had time to run it myself yet), but doesn't it need Tor to be really anonymous?

I shall be shopping at IKEA in your honor good sir!  Grin

Congrats!
1988  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: will the bitcoin reach $1000 one day...? on: October 21, 2013, 06:26:44 PM
I don't know.... we went parabolic pretty quick there, so I think it is unlikely we stabilize anywhere for too long. I think we'll keep climbing until the bottom falls out of the Chinese speculation market -- that is what is driving us at this point. Little support otherwise, IMO.

I kinda feel the same way. If the price rise is due to speculation in China, there is no way that they, and everyone else, will stop buying right as Bitcoin reaches it's equilibrium stable price. We always overshoot. Hopefully, though, we'll get lucky, and Bitcoin will rise to $600 before crashing ALL THE WAY back down to $400, kinda like it usually does Cheesy

Maybe we can have one in Asia, one in Europe and one in America?

You;re discriminating against all the upside-down people below the equator :p
1991  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: will the bitcoin reach $1000 one day...? on: October 21, 2013, 05:27:17 PM
You can't really believe any answers on this forum as their are to many sock puppets. A guy who wants price to drop will tell you that Bitcoin is over and will probably be made illegal very soon. A guy with 1000 bitcoins will tell you that it will soon lead to interplanetary space travel, alien disclosure, talking animals, free chocolate and a 1 million USD price tag!

It does what it wants

1992  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: will the bitcoin reach $1000 one day...? on: October 21, 2013, 05:23:31 PM
Still waiting for that one day. Hopefully I didn't became greedy and sell of everything before it reach that level.

Sell for what and why? Do you sell your USD/EUR for some other currency when your money goes up in value?
1993  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Silk Road Hollywood Movie on: October 21, 2013, 04:29:37 PM
Everyone seems to be pretty negative about this, I honestly think it'll make a very interesting movie; can't wait! Hopefully it goes through.
A guy behind a computer scripting and messaging, yeah that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Oh shit! Here comes an IF statement! *POW!*

Oh damn! Someone submitted a bug report! *WHAM!*

Moving from Texas to California! *UHAUL!*

Oh no! Forum drama! *TROLL!*

Oh crap! The fuzz! *OPEN DOOR*

The tension! They're about to arrest him! *LIBRARYYYYYYY!*   --  Shhhhhhh!!!!   --   *sorry*

Phewh! What a ride!

Personally, I fully expect them to totally screw up the whole "how computers and bitcoin works" thing. I doubt it will be as bad as Hackers, or how NCIS does it, but still.
1994  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Online quiz to see if you are more "left, right, Authoritarian or Libertarian" on: October 21, 2013, 04:19:54 PM
Really, I think most people, especially those who don't want to involve themselves in popular politics, will find they're libertarian

Since most people in the USA are for taxing those who make more than $250k a year, and most people are for "fair income" and against the idea that the wealthy are not sharing their wealth equally, I'd have to say that most people, even those who don't want to get involved politically, are not quite libertarian. They may be close, but not quite. Plus we still have tons of people who are for the free market (somewhat), who are paranoid about things like monopolies and corporations running amock :p

Just need to interject to point out that unconditional love is not actually love, and is meaningless. When you love someone regardless, that's not really love, that's just you not caring about what they do.
This is not true.  Fly.  Do something impossible.  Why can't you?  Negative energy, doubt, it resides on earth, it resides in you.  In a world of unconditional love, you could fly, you could do anything at whim.  I've done it, I've seen it, I know it's true.

So, what you're saying is, the act of loving, caring, and taking care of someone, even at expense to yourself, is maifested in breaking physics and levitating? To love is to be able to fly? I'm going to take a really crazy guess here: you're single, right?

Universal truth - everything just is.  You can describe it from the left perspective or the right, but what your describing still just is.

That is the most worthless, useless, and lazy conclusion in the world, ever, and is no better than the answer "God did it." Lazy stupid idiots say "It is what it is" or "God did it" and end it at that. People who actually like to use their heads don't stop at what it is, they ask WHY it is.
1996  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The problem with atheism. on: October 21, 2013, 02:14:32 AM
Many people hate the Bible with great passion.

Those would be people with conflicting religions, not atheists.

Quote
Why is the book banned in some countries?  It is because it is powerful.

No, it's for the same reason so many Christians and preachers hate atheists: they are afraid someone else's ideas will interfere with their own brand of crazy. Islamists don't want to lose people to Christianity, Christians don't want to lose people to Islam, and no one wants people to think for themselves and start to question their authority and power.

Quote
The words are God inspired and they cut to the heart like a sword piercing the soul.

Obviously not. Your belief and obsession with them cuts you to the heart, not the words, they have no effect on me whatsoever, and annoy and confuse some others who believe different words.

Quote
You have the choice to disregard it.

A fallacy you and many other Christians keep repeating. There is no choice in belief. You either believe, or you don't. One can't simply decide to start to believe in something. At least not if they are sane. People can't just choose to believe in your gods any more than you can just choose to believe in teapots orbiting the sun, or in fairies, or in the Sun God Ra. You can choose to delude yourself, or choose to pretend to believe, but belief requires conviction (brainwashing) and/or evidence, not just will.

Quote
As for underlining stuff we like and crossing out what we do not like, I agree that many Christians do that and it is a VERY dangerous thing to do.  They will probably be the ones that get to heaven, like the Bible says, and they say, "Lord I did these things in your name" to which He will reply, "Depart from me.  I never knew you."

That is why I try my best to read the entire Bible and instead of reading into it what I want to say, I use exegesis and read it for what it really does say.  It does not make me popular in some Christian circles though because the Bible is really clear on many things some of which is not politically correct nowadays.

I'm fairly sure you don't follow everything the bible tells you to do either, otherwise you'd be posting this from the inside of a jail cell. But, luckily for you, preachers and religious scholars have reinterpreted many parts of the bible to conform more closely to the culture of the times  Smiley
1997  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: will the bitcoin reach $1000 one day...? on: October 21, 2013, 01:55:29 AM
If you count inflation then yes? In 1000 years it will hit 1000$. But if you compare current value i think true value of bit coin is 300$ and it will stuck there.

Stuck there for how long?
1998  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: announcement: the international "when-bitcoin-reaches 1000,- $ party" on: October 21, 2013, 01:50:42 AM
I guess for the $10,000 party, we just buy an island outright?
1999  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US health care mandate (Obamacare) on: October 21, 2013, 01:40:03 AM
MoonShadow, Spendulus, why are you defending the US system as better, if it is so broken? Maybe the UK one is better after all, just because all their costs are managed, haggled on, and taken care of internally, even if the final customer doesn't see it, while in US the system is so screwed up and convoluted that neither the final customers, nor the participants, know what the hell is going on and what is actually being charged? It wouldn't surprise me at all if we were overpaying for medical treatment and supplies, and in turn overpaying for insurance, simply because the majority of those expenses are hidden from us due to employers covering the rest of it.
2000  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US health care mandate (Obamacare) on: October 21, 2013, 01:31:57 AM
Does it really say that it will provide for free abortions? Cause that would be awesome!

Not really free.  We're all paying for them.  And I'm pretty sure that both you and the fetus must be registered Democrat before payment.

Yeah, but if we have to pay anyway, that's way cheaper than having to support some snotty brats.
