Fyi, someone tried to *compromise* my treasurer address today. Not sure how they planed to pull it off, considering it's in an offline wallet in a secure location, but they claimed they did. They did find my Social Security number (which is semi-public anyway), compromised an old email of mine I forgot I had, which I deleted, and tried to change my Yahoo and Amazon passwords, which they failed to completely take over (change password confirmation emails went to a different address), but the coins are still safe. Next I'll be worried about my extremeties  |

Cartels will take over first. Once the cartels control 100% of mining, then the government will take over the cartels in "retaliation" (with winks and handshakes behind the scenes).
That is the normal course of events in democracy.
I don't think people will care if the 51% is owned by an organization that calls itself "cartel" or "government," either one will be considered a threat, and likely either one coming close to getting 51% will cause concern and threat of price collapse. Remember when BTCGuild got close to having 51% hashing power? Instead of continuing to increase their share, they increased their fees to get miners to leave their pool, because they know they will earn more by keeping Bitcoin secure and distributed, than by getting 51% power. Before that happened, everyone including the developers believed as you did. Now wee have evidence that that may not be the case. All transactions get propagated through the entire network of bitcoin users, with miners eventually also hearing them. So if you suggest that a mining cartel can somehow keep transactions from being broadcast, and keep other competing miners from hearing about them and mining them too, you are mistaken.
You are incorrect. If Amazon offers a downloadable client (or even one that runs from their website), which sends the transactions to their server, they have no obligation to forward the transactions to other miners. So, if you are using an Amazon wallet app, and I am using some other wallet app, and you try to send me coins, how will I know whether you sent them if you only send them to Amazon's servers? It would essentially cut everyone using Amazon clients off from the rest of the bitcoin network. Why would anyone want to use such an app? Bitcoin transactions primarily work because they are propagated P2P through the network from person to person. Miners just sit on the perifere catching these transactions as they pass by and adding them to blocks. I mean, can miners screw with Bitcoin by implementing arbitrary rules, such as increasing the total number of bitcoins, or creating nonstandard transactions, and forcing everyone else to eat them.
Cartel can once it has destroyed all other miners and has 100% of the network hashrate. Once they get beyond 51%, the bitcoins they are working so hard to mine and get control of will start rapidly losing value, as people abandon it and move to a more distributed system. Even getting close will be considered a threat. Just knowing this is likely to keep anyone from trying. Cartels will own 100% of mining. No improvement at all for humanity. Worse we will be on a public ledger with no privacy nor anonymity. This is the 666 system.
How would miners know which address belongs to whom, if no IP's are tied to it, and their miners may only hear about a transaction after it has passed through multiple clients? And don't forget, if a 51%+ cartel implements nonstandard changes, their blocks will not be accepted by any of the clients, and won't even propagate. Their 51% will instantly become 0%, because, again, bitcoin rules are enforced first by the clients, and second by the miners. |

Everyone is mortal You don't need a central government to ensure that nobody gains too much power, you just need to structure your incentives to make gaining power less valuable. For instance, there are ways to make attempts at gaining more power at others' expense actually be way more constly than gaining power through voluntary trade. Yes, but shooting politicians usually has serious consequences and is still arguably immoral.  (Oh, you probably meant some other ways....) Nah, that's pretty much it. Without government there to take your taxes, and then use your tax money to pay for police to protect bad businessmen and politicians, those types will have to pay for their own protection of their own person and property, which is directly proportional to how much they piss other people off. Protection like that is way more expensive and way less profitable than playing by the rules, since even something as simple as a cheap $50 bomb near your factory pipeline, or a $5 bar of baking yeast in your house's septic tank, can make things way more costly and unpleasant. |

LightRider's idea of capitalism makes me think of trying to defend the idea that all sex should be banned, because while some people may be having sex for lovemaking or procreation, sex also involves rape, and rape is apparently just as much a part of lovemaking as everything else is.
In this case, making love, the voluntary exchange, is capitalism, and rape, which may have the same result (procreation, or in other sense profit), is corporatism and plunder. I and other pro-capitalists here are doing the equivalent of trying to point out that sex, and making love, has many uses and is the best way to progress forward, while Lightrider is doing the equivalent of saying that rape and making love are all the same thing, and that sex should be completely abolished.

The benefit, in this case, is capitalism, and the drawback is lack of capitalism. More specifically, the benefit is someone being a capitalist, participating in the capitalist system, and making wealth for themselves. The drawback is someone not being a capitalist, not taking advantage of capitalism, and then getting in trouble when they didn't bother earning or saving. If you are climbing a cliff, it's not the cliff murdering you if you let go.
This is the kind of lethal ignorance and sick egocentric mentality that allow these kinds of atrocities to happen repeatedly. Blaming the victims for the violent actions of their aggressors is one of the distorted values that capitalism teaches. If someone has a choice between putting money into savings, or having kids/buying a new fancy car/buying a house they can barely afford, and then they get into financial trouble that brings them to the brink of starvation, whom am I supposed to blame? |

It still bugs me that people think Illuminati are some secret one-world-government thing, when they were exactly the opposite. That' can't happen,read the replies. Right, but they can peg the dollar to Bitcoin. Just show them of a graph of how the dollar has been extremely volatile against Bitcoin and suggest that pegging the dollar to Bitcoin would eliminate that. You're right. If both the Bitcoin and the Dollar fluctuate wildly at the same time, no one will be able to tell that bitcoins are fluctuating in value, and everything will stabilize  Maybe I should suggest that during Tuesday's Banking meting. |
