So are there good posts/stories of users (hopefully right here in this forum) who could smell out scams early or exposed them?
You can't go wrong with
MPOE-PR. There are lots of links here on scams from days of yore:
Coinlab/Coinbase/Coincrap - Multiple cases of stealing from users through the "canceling BTC sale when price goes up" scam, amplified by "pay anyone complaining on the forum" double-down. In any event their burn rate takes them out of the picture this year, so damage should be limited, but try and sit at a safe distance.
If only these scammers - Coinbase - had actually fucked off, but hey at least we know who they are and where they are.
Bruno of course was and remains a brilliant scam fighter, but his style is hard to follow. He was marvelous against Butterfly Labs, one of the most dramatic scams on the forum, replete with mafia involvement and reportedly a key developer telling a porkie pie.
so are we even becoming better at detecting scams..?
Yes obviously we are more seasoned. We can detect them better now but there's little we can do after that with the big and/or non-Western ones. For example bitconnect and plustoken got away from us (the limits of the forum). Although it must be said
tmfp goes after and exposes some big fishies.
The scam rate in legacy finance is far higher, even without adjudging taxation as a scam!
