A little known specialized bond created in 2017 by the World Bank may hold the answer as to why U.S. and global health authorities have declined to label the global spread of the novel coronavirus a “pandemic.” Those bonds, now often referred to as “pandemic bonds,” were ostensibly intended to transfer the risk of potential pandemics in low-income nations to financial markets. Yet, in light of the growing coronavirus outbreak, the investors who purchased those products could lose millions if global health authorities were to use that label in relation to the surge in global coronavirus cases

You ghoulish kids are cute and all but the sars2 only kills 10% of the over 80's and 10% of diabetics etc so it's not that part that's going to sting as much as 2% of all humanity - if you remember what that is - could be killed. One hundred and fifty million souls. If you know 150 people pretty well, 3 will die in the next 18 months of this thing. Of your 1500 acquaintances, 30. 3 Hat-wearing, god-fearing, wall-observing bros might die.

edit ~15%, ~8%, ~2.3% but there's only been the one big study so far

1550  Other / Meta / Latin and nullian excursions in the Gangs thread on: February 27, 2020, 10:10:24 AM

nullius is genitive

* nullius wavius handius ;-)

NominativeNullius
GenitiveNullii
DativeNullo
AccusativeNullium
AblativeNullio
VocativeNulli

Probably I snipped the bit where you explain how nullius is genitive one minute but nominative the next, but possibly this cunningly concealed error is actually designed to make us humans think nullius is also human lol.

Did Latin have diacritics? That pictured thing is just for stress and a bit of a nonsense, no?

That phrase, nullius illum miseret, (and nullius ille miseretur) is very hard, and I wonder where it comes from, it just seems to have ossified as a phrase in Gouldman and then Robertson. Someone please correct us here. If Classics Twitter wasn't rife with liberals I'd get the question posed there but it is so I won't and will live on in ignorance.

Nice graph by @flibbr showing the traded price of 1 btc aginst the cost to mine one over time

Looks like a partial BS to me.
First off, I remember 2015-miners did not have huge profitability back then (that is erroneously shown).
Second part of why it is BS-because there is no sharp changes in profitability at the halving point (mid 2016, for example).
Recent numbers look OK.

Thanks for this. Yes I blindly followed flibbr, but actually what's graphed is not the 'cost to mine' but

Takes QUANDL Bitcoin blockchain difficulty data, three variables (hashrate in THs/sec, power consumption in kWh, and electricity costs in cents/kWh) and calculates the base line for cash flow in US dollars. The default is an AntMiner S15 at 10 cents/kWh.

When price is above this line, miners with the given conditions have positive cash flow (i.e. they make more money mining than their running costs), and when below the line, they would be better off turning their rigs off (if this simple model can be applied to their particular circumstance).

Assumptions:
1. All costs are consolidated into one "electricity cost" variable, including things like rent and wages for mining farms.
2. 12.5 BTC/block emission schedule (update source code upon next halving).

So, exactly as you say, it is useless for 2015 times and the previous halving event, but fine since then - the 12.5BTC era.

Could anyone please send Biodom's post some merit?

HSI’s intellectual property group leverages its relationship with the pharmaceutical industry to obtain actionable intelligence used to target the trafficking of counterfeit pharmaceuticals that contain opioids. For example, agents assigned to the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance work with brand protection representatives to further develop investigative leads for HSI field offices. The BCSC has developed a Cryptocurrency Intelligence Program (CIP) which identifies unlicensed money services businesses in the form of independent cryptocurrency brokers’ use of peer-to-peer (P2P) sites, online forums and classified advertisements, and darknet markets (DNM) to engage in unlicensed money services businesses (MSB) activity. A large portion of these unlicensed MSBs are engaged in laundering narcotics proceeds, including opioid trafficking.

The only mention of cryptocurrencies in that whole 300 page shitfest, but quite enough to remind us the only thing these bullies want for us is to be sent to their re-education-through-labour camps where we grow kale and study the statist classics.

edit: what does that mean, that the document is watermarked? should I expect the Spanich Inquisition?

No, but you exposed the fact that the user written in that document broke the content licensing with J.P. Morgan and sent the document to people not entitled to receive it. I don’t know and I don’t care if you are that particular user. I just want you to be sure you actually saw that.
