201  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 11, 2018, 08:54:20 AM
^  Dash was never a 'no.1 coin' in anything, being somewhat of trying to be a privacy coin or otherwise.  They're good at 'marketing' tho...  Wink  But I'm not really sure how they're good at it today.  They seem to have faltered.

Not true, they originated the masternode, which is the pinnacle in gimmicky greed. Apparently Duffield understood the largest target market for cryptocurrencies long before anyone else. He may be slimy as fuck, but he understands the psychology of greed.

Maybe the psychology in the market at the particular time he did it, but no masternode coins are doing very well anymore at this point. Seems to be just one of many crypto fads whose time came and went. Duff looks like a one hit wonder to me, which likely makes it more luck than genius.

Contrast with Larimer.
202  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: December 10, 2018, 05:11:46 AM
hi guys, wonder if u could help me, basically trying to sync chain from scratch,, using steemd --replay-blockchain (I have downloaded block_log) it all was going fairly fast but now it jut makes 1% progress a day, so 67.3203%   18900000 of 28074743   (37052M free) and tomorrow if I will be lucky it will be 69% and so forth , does anyone know of better (I have also followed best practice to sync, inc just witness plugin) and some unix i/o tweaks as recommended

a! and yes love what has been done with steem, very innovative platform on all levels, was actually one of the first that mined it, and have 0 intention to part with it cheers

How much memory do you have and HDD or SSD?

You need 64 GB to run a node with only witness plugin at full speed (should finish replay in several hours depending on CPU speed). 32 GB + SSD is somewhat slower but not bad, but less memory and/or HDD means performance goes down from there, potentially a lot.

Work is planned to reduce the memory requirements of nodes but not done yet.
203  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Monero XMR large trade OTC on: December 08, 2018, 04:09:11 PM
I don't think it is worth reviving this dead thread. There are many better ways to trade now.
204  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AEON [2018-11-30: update to 0.12.7.0+ ASAP; 0.12.8.0 on Windows] on: December 05, 2018, 08:13:12 AM
GUI Release candidate (please test!)

We have a new release candidate GUI available for testing. Everything is merged to master. There are no binaries so you will have to compile it yourself (instructions are in the README).

Github repo: https://github.com/aeonix/aeon-gui

There is some sort of build issue for Windows (also applies to Monero) which is being discussed here: https://github.com/monero-project/monero-gui/issues/1559
205  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: December 01, 2018, 06:33:35 AM
That's actually a pretty bad and scary news. I have never heard any legit blockchain project laying off 70% of their project, especially when there is so much to develop. Ned says the company doesn't have enough money to even handle nodes. That sounds like they are in deep water now. SMT which was supposed to be their main booster for "to the moon" and adoption has also been delayed for who knows how long. But the thing that surprises me is that how they didn't make the most of during the bull run in Q1-Q2 this year.

Let's see how this one goes.

1. The blockchain developers didn't get laid off.
2. They have $30 million worth of STEEM left in public company accounts. https://steemit.com/@steemit/transfers https://steemit.com/@steem/transfers https://steemit.com/@misterdelegation/transfers
3. Costs apparently got out of way out of control due to being overly optimistic about high crypto prices earlier this year and having lofty goals. Not so good, but good that they caught it before all the funds were gone and decided to downsize
4. Nodes were very expensive, costing them $2 million/year. They are working on optimizing the costs. Plus really they should encourage other people to run their own nodes. I've never heard of another project that pays for everyone else's node.

I bet a lot of cryptos are in a similar position but they're less open about it.

Pretty sure you are right.

Quote
One good thing is that they wont have to keep selling Steem to pay all those staff.  I'm sure that's been one of the reasons why Steem has fallen further than some coins.

Agree, but remember there is still the other 30% and still a lot of non-employee costs (office, travel, legal, operations for the web site, etc.)

Maintenance update (Windows only)

Sophia (point release 8)

This maintenance release fixes a problem that existed in 0.12.7.0 only when using the wallet on Windows, and in addition contains a cosmetic improvement to logging and some documentation cleanup. If you are not running Windows there is no need to update from 0.12.7.0.

207  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [AEON] Aeon Speculation on: November 30, 2018, 06:29:11 AM
However, some people in the Aeon subreddit are already speculating if she is dumping her Aeons in favor of making another investment

So what? If AEON is money. Then everyone is allowed to do with it weather it pleases them. If AEON is not money and there are some people that decide when I should spend it and for what I should spend it, then I personally dont care about AEON anymore and dont want it anymore. No one got any AEON for free. Everyone had to buy them or mine them. When they bought them or pay electricity to mine them, they risked value will decrease.  And no central bank would replace their lost value if that would happen.

I remember when she bought them and paid well above market to do so. She most certainly earned the right to sell as she chooses (as did any AEON owner of course; I agree with your take 100%).

People buy and sell, that's what makes a market. If the person in question is dumping (or has dumped) her coins then after the dumping the supply will tighten up again. So it goes.

Please make a final push on beta testing the upcoming CLI release

Instructions for compiling it can be found in the latest State of AEON post: https://medium.com/@AEON_Community/the-state-of-aeon-11-18-2018-548ed8a8abd2

We are looking to tag a new point release in the next several days so any test reports positive and negative are most welcome.

210  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blowing the lid off the CryptoNote/Bytecoin scam (with the exception of Monero) on: November 08, 2018, 11:27:05 PM
Getting slightly off-topic maybe as the scam we are busting is now AssetRush (which was co-founded by the Bytecoin community director).

Not off topic at all. I'm quite confident it is all exactly the same scam with different names, just like the coins in the OP here. I always stated that the OP while finding a lot, was still only the tip of the iceberg, and I still believe that.

Please keep this thread informed of your findings,

Also, I hope the developers are not going to copy what Siacoin is doing.

LOL no. That was and is one of the shadiest things I've ever seen in crypto and that's saying a lot.

They started manufacturing their own ASICs.

Not only that. They manufacture their own ASICs and then use their position as devs of a supposedly decentralized coin to brick everyone else's ASICs to give their own for-profit company's ASICs a monopoly, while at the same time invoking Orwell to call them "community ASICs".

WTF.
212  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: November 03, 2018, 06:19:41 AM
Not sure if this is the correct place to ask but I wonder if Monero will get listed on any of US based exchanges?

kraken

edit: is listed and has been for ages

Also bittrex and poloniex. Bittrex has fiat but doesn't have a direct xmr fiat pair

Smooth has been MIA 2 weeks.

What? I check this forum almost every day which one can see by looking at "Last Active" in profile (and posted 6 days ago), check IRC daily, respond to DMs on IRC, check reddit, respond to reddit DMs, check GitHub issues/PRs (some responded/merged recently), etc. So, no, not MIA two weeks or at all. Fake News!

I'm looking into some of the other issues you mentioned.

Deleted OT along with reply

Significant falls in the past mean that this can happen in the future on a larger scale. And then those 30 corporations that are included in the DJ index can, for example, simply withdraw their shares from the exchange.

CLI and GUI binaries for release 6 have been uploaded with the exception of Linux GUI binaries which are unavailable for technical reasons. Linux GUI built from source should still work.
216  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AEON [2018-09-27: update to 0.12.6.0+ ASAP] on: October 03, 2018, 04:54:00 AM
@estenity: I'm not overly concerned about GitHub at this time. The nature of git means that anyone who has cloned the repo (many people, even for a smaller coin like AEON) has a full duplicate and verifiable copy of the source code history. The main thing that is at risk are things like issues and pull requests, which aren't very large or important databases for AEON. (By contrast, XMR currently has over 200 open issues and 30 open pull requests. Many of those contain contributions from many different people, and some are active every single day. So losing access to this database would be a major disruption.)

@bbc.reporter: There is a community-run (crowd) funding platform for AEON now, which is linked on the web site. I have already stated that if proposals are well thought out and add value to AEON then I am happy to allocate donation funds to those proposals. That could include exchanges (or many other things).

Important security update release

Sophia (point release 6)

Dozens of upstream performance, reliability and security patches
Improved packaging for (unfinished/non-usable) Ledger wallet support
Several documentation improvements from the AEON community
Disable incorrect/obsolete DNS lookups

All users running nodes on the p2p network should update ASAP to prevent DoS attacks against the nodes.

All users receiving payments should update ASAP to protect against the cryptonote duplicate output coin burning attack described in https://getmonero.org/2018/09/25/a-post-mortum-of-the-burning-bug.html (if unable to update immediately, suspend receiving payments until updated).

Source-code only release for now; binaries will be added later.

218  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 15, 2018, 10:21:09 PM
We got close to ZEC price again in last days, but did not get ahead. I dont believe Monero was ever more expensive then ZEC so far.  This was sort of destined to happen because of the emission. Doubt many here speculated it will not happen this long. Any ideas when Monero will get more expensive then ZEC?

We're getting there.

the fluffening

ZCL is going to introduce ring signatures?  Kiss  lol

Yes, and masternode blinding.
219  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AEON [2018-07-12: update to 0.12.5.0+] on: September 15, 2018, 04:04:16 AM
@bbc.reporter I don't have stats on things like average or typical tx size for AEON because we don't have a chain explorer with stats like moneroblocks.info afaik. However, a typical (1->2 or 2->2) AEON transaction seems to be about 2 KB and for Monero it is 13 KB, so a factor of 6.5x. For bitcoin it seems to be something like 300-500 bytes, although it is hard to measure these days because so many transactions are exchange to exchange (or similar) and end up getting aggregated into huge payout transactions. Thus you end up with things like full blocks consisting of 1000 tx or even fewer (avg >1 KB each). This isn't representative of what it would look like if people were actually using the coin for something other than trading.

Anyway, going with 500 bytes, that would make AEON 4x bigger than BTC and Monero 6.5x bigger than AEON. Monero and AEON will likely be similar once both have activated bulletproofs (around 80% reduction from the current Monero size I'm told, but I've also seen some different numbers so I'm not sure that is actually exactly right). That would make both Monero and AEON txs about 20% smaller than AEON is now, still around 3x bigger than BTC

Is there a GUI wallet for this coin yet? Or a way to hold Aeon that doesn't require a terminal window?

https://github.com/aeonix/aeon-gui/releases

 Shocked Shocked Shocked

Is that official?? I must be so very isolated. After the unfortunate events during the code rebase with the stoffu versus the Aevengers situation, I stopped going to the Aeon subbreddit.

It is the official GUI wallet for AEON.

There is also a funding system for anyone to open a proposal on at https://aeonfunding.com/

There are also a few other projects being discussed on the subreddit as well. It seems to be the hub for communication lately as the IRC channel is locked to registered users only (thanks to freenode spammers) and AEON having little to no other outlets for discussion (aside from a Discord I recently setup).

IRC should be unlocked now (freenode spamming is reduced, or at least has switched to DMs)

@bbc.reporter, the GUI releases have been announced here as well. For example:

Recommended update (Sophia point release 5)

Contains additional upstream fix to ensure outputs are processed only once

https://github.com/aeonix/aeon-gui/releases/tag/v0.12.5.0-aeon

CLI and GUI binaries are available
