201  Local / Português (Portuguese) / Re: Bitmine com o telefone? on: January 05, 2012, 06:30:29 PM

202  Economy / Speculation / Re: Who sells bit cents on Mt Gox? (And why?) on: January 05, 2012, 05:10:23 PM
Someone mentioned in the IRC the other day that you don't pay fees if you trade small amounts at MtGox because the fee is rounded to 0.
203  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: this is a dumb question on: January 05, 2012, 08:18:11 AM
i do see that very clearly in this subforum, but it does not seem to be present in the 'speculation' section. quite odd. i can just use the code though, thanks.

That's because you can't post in the speculation forum. Read the stickies here.
204  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: this is a dumb question on: January 05, 2012, 08:14:46 AM
There's a quote button:

Code:
[quote author=arepo link=topic=56665.msg675022#msg675022 date=1325750479]
...but i already tried the search function.

how does one use the quote function on this forum? (i actually want to put a quote in my signature)

thanks!

205  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Questions? on: January 05, 2012, 08:13:09 AM
what happens if I use a wrong bitcoin adress to send bitcoins to ? Like i forget one number or letter ?
if the adress exists someone else willg et it clear, but if this is not existing will it not transfer ?

Another Question:
Is it possible to install a mining software on a hosting server to mine there ? So I could use the machine Iam paying for more than I do normally... ! ?

There is a checksum so it is highly unlikely that you can type a valid address if you forget a letter. Yes, it is possible to mine on a server, but note that you will earn almost nothing by mining with a CPU or with an NVIDIA card.
206  Economy / Speculation / Re: CampBX 432 BTC offered at $5.31 on: January 05, 2012, 07:38:43 AM
I believe you can do Stop Loss orders at CampBX, unlike Mt Gox?

I may have to go with them, as I  am tired of watching Mt Gox Charts round the clock to trigger my sales, would be so much easier to set up a stop loss order with CampBX.

Is there any disadvantage to selling at CampBX?  I imagine it would be harder to move volume BTC because they are a smaller exchange.

Unfortunately I think that Stop Loss orders are not enabled at the moment, but the trading interface has an option for that... If you open a ticket at their helpdesk I'm sure they can help you straight that out.

CampBX has much less volume than MtGox (around 1%) so the market depth is pretty thin. But from my experience, if you post an order between the bid/ask it gets filled quickly.
207  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to make blockchain download faster? on: January 05, 2012, 04:02:09 AM
You have to import the private key. You can do it with pywallet or in one of the online wallets, such as mtgox or blockchain.info.

Usually you use that as a savings wallet because it not practical to keep importing the keys somewhere (and it is safer if you keep it on the paper).

Pywallet imports the wallet into the "official" bitcoin client wallet.dat format, right?

Without importing the keys somewhere, the bitcoins are quite useless since you can't really post them anywhere.

Yes, pywallet works with the official wallet.dat file. Well, if you want to save some coins to use 6 months from now there's no need to keep them in your computer Smiley

Or a paper-based wallet -- http://www.bitaddress.org

How does the paper-based wallet work? More exactly - I know I can check the balance on, say, block explorer, but how do I send the bitcoins to someone when I have the private key?

Right now there are a few more coins there selling cheap. In the last couple of days CampBX moved much more money than they use to.
210  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Noob questions on: January 05, 2012, 01:22:01 AM
Just to elaborate on number 2 (the MtGox question), Bitcoin itself is not vulnerable because MtGox has nothing to do with the Bitcoin protocol. The vulnerability I see is just psychological... Quoting slush:

Well, *technically* it's not dangerous for p2p network, of course. But crash of MtGox (for any stupid reason like they get busted for keeping marijuana in their office?) would be the real disaster for Bitcoin project and economy. Mostly because they hold milions of bitcoins and some huge amount of dollars. Many bitcoin businesses are holding funds there. Also trust in whole concept will be shaken a LOT ("where we should keep our funds when *even MtGox* is gone?"). I believe that only few believers will remain here after such disaster scenario.

Hard at work is all I can report.

I see... Good news then Wink Good luck!
212  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Please Help on: January 05, 2012, 01:06:10 AM
Good job not pointing newbies to gox. Fuck that place.

I personally never had any problems with MtGox, but I think that it is important to have alternatives.
213  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: FPGA mining for fun and profit on: January 05, 2012, 01:00:46 AM
We've obviously looked at this a great deal at LargeCoin. The cost of fabbing a profitable Bitcoin ASIC is $500,000. This is the cost when you use a structure ASIC solution, and there isn't any way to get it below $500,000 - believe me, we have tried.

Structured ASIC processes definitely remove a lot of the complexity of ASIC fabrication versus standard cell or full custom processes. However, you are still dealing with the fabrication of an immensely complex integrated circuit with millions of tiny little wires in it. Getting the design right so that the first batch works means spending lots of money on sophisticated software and engineering talent - and that's just not cheap.

If you want to run off a few chips in an academic process, by all means go for it. That's a great hobby level activity. However, we found through our extensive analysis that nothing short of a structured ASIC process can give you the scale and volume that you need to generate enough money from your efforts to be well compensated for the investment.

Are there any news regarding the progress of your product?

How do I get btc?

You buy them at an exchange such as TradeHill or CampBX.

P.S. In MY computer, I have two video cards, both ATI...HD2400 and HD3400...are those any better?

No because they don't support OpenCL
218  Economy / Speculation / Re: Arbitrage opportunities on: January 04, 2012, 07:20:05 PM
On CampBX there are 375 BTC offered at $5.31. Currently $5.509 Bid on Mt Gox. That looks like a nice buy at $5.31 on CampBX if you have some USD on CampBX or can move some quickly from Dwolla.

Yeah, there were some nice opportunities today. That used to be a 500 BTC order Wink Unfortunately I don't have more USD at CampBX.

EDIT: the order is gone now
219  Economy / Speculation / Re: 3 years ago, satoshi got greedy! on: January 04, 2012, 04:03:05 AM
3 years ago bitcoin was born,

1.5 years later mtgox was born

what took them so long... did satosih and his friends mine 3 mill coins b4 letting everyone know about bitcoin?

No. It was immediately announced in a mailing list. Bitcoin was really small back then so it didn't make much sense to start building an exchange right away.
220  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: camp bx performance issues on: January 04, 2012, 03:54:40 AM
Yes. It happens to me occasionally.  I set the timeout to a couple of minutes an I keep retrying. It eventually goes through.
