2081  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] 2011 1 BTC Error Casascius Coin on: January 09, 2014, 05:44:03 PM
It would really help if you would post a higher quality photo of the hologram side of the coin.  I don't know how anyone can judge the quality of your coin based on the poor quality photograph you've provided.

I'll give it a shot, I don't have a fancy camera, just a standard 8MP point and shoot digital camera, nor any artistic talent. My point was to exemplify the scratches on the holo which I got, but I'll see about adding another picture.
Often photos can exaggerate defects in a coin.  If you could take a photo outside in natural light on a cloudy day it might help.

Well thats just it, all I have is natural light in my house, I have multiple sky lights and windows, and a grand total of about 100 Watts worth of lightbulbs throughout the house. Without the right weather my photos turn out even worse. The photo of the hologram I took does indeed exaggerate the defect by the scratches in the hologram. They are far less noticeable in person, however I wanted to make sure anyone who was interested knew exactly what they were getting. I'd rather underpromise and over deliver than over promise and under deliver. I did get another few pictures, however they too aren't that good. I'll upload them as soon as I find my camera's USB cable.

2083  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: How to get blatently inaccurate trust rating removed? on: January 09, 2014, 05:14:50 PM
Nope, Theymos is the only one with the power to remove trust ratings, however I don't know of a single case where he has. Negative feedback isn't a big deal if the person leaving the feedback doesn't have any proof or grounds for the negative feedback, most people will just disregard it.

Ah ok, thanks for clarification on that point, wasn't too sure about it. As a side note, would you happen to know why the scammer tag is no longer given out?

The scammer tag is no longer given out, because it was solely up for Theymos to decide, and he required more than outstanding evidence to actually issue the tag. Its easier for everyone to just have a personal feedback system in which you can learn about a potential scammer in fewer than the 6 month process to issue a scammer tag.

Technically I think they are still given out today, but only to much larger scale scammers, and again, with evidence that leaves not a doubt.

I always follow the "ratings", read the References and make a decision. Plenty of people I don't like for whatever reasons that I would still do and have done business with.

This is exactly how it is supposed to work. The numbers don't mean anything, the entire system is supposed to be a reference, not an all mighty judge of trustworthiness. If you see positive feedback left from people you trust, then that should mean something to you. If you see feedback left from someone you have never heard of, or don't respect their judgement, its business as usual.
2084  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk.org = Bitcoin version of Alibaba on: January 09, 2014, 05:02:22 PM
I don't see why people try to put a political affiliation to a forum. Its a message board, it doesn't have a political agenda. You can come here and interact with other people with the same interests as you (Bitcoin). Theymos is the owner of the site. If he decided that everyone with a "q" in their name was to be banned, it would happen, people would be upset, but so what? How things work here is completely based on common sense and Theymos' ideologies. You do your due diligence, and you are fine, if you are responsible for your own well being, you are going to do a much better job than anyone else would. The forum policy is about general freedoms to do whatever you want, as long as you aren't interfering with others freedoms. Its not libertarian, anarchist, fascist, or communist, its just the admin's personal beliefs on how the forums should be run.

Craigslist is not responsible for weeding out scams, and neither are we. Sucessful scammers are either long cons which there is little protection against, or those that exploit the stupid or greedy. If something is too good to be true, try and get it, but be sure you have adequet protection to make sure you aren't going to get burnt by the deal. If you can't get those protections, rather than taking a gamble and hoping it pays off (you will always lose), just walk. Scammers aren't banned, because the forums are about conversation, and scammers can provide valid opinions as well. Its impossible to keep scammers from coming back anyway, as badbear said, account bans will ban their individual accounts and they will make another. IP bans will ban a tor node and the scammer will switch to another, and then people complain that the tor nodes are all banned.
2085  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] 2011 1 BTC Error Casascius Coin on: January 09, 2014, 04:01:43 PM
Based on the images I can't help but say that it looks like the hologram has been tampered with. Some of the honeycomb is visible.

I'm not implying anything but from my experience with my holograms which also have a honey comb pattern is the only way to have the honeycomb pattern be shown is to have the hologram peeled back in some form or fashion, unless Mike himself put a damaged hologram on to this coin (which I doubt).

Sometimes when peeling back the holograms from the paper they come on some of my holograms (the gold foil ones mostly) end up showing "tampering" when nothing has been done. I haven't found out what causes this but it is a very small percentage of my holograms that does this.

In any case are you the original owner of this coin? Sorry if I missed that bit of information if you already shared it.

Edit: Did this coin fall from an elevated place? Or something else perhaps?

I am not, but the coin is still in tact. I bought the coin before it would have made sense to tamper with them. I am under the impression that one of the previous owners put it in their pocket, as the scratches on the holo look very similar to key marks, or something similar that one might put in their pocket. Thats what my inner detective tells me.

You still hoping for BTC2+ coins for it?

I do still feel that 2BTC would be about the lowest I would take for it. I'm not new to the numismatic field, and I am aware of the price difference between a Mint coin and a Circulated coin. Most of the 2011 Casascius coins are in circulated condition, as they were not originally thought to be collectable, most however without the scratches on the hologram. Given the current market and Casascius situation, 2.5 BTC would be ideal however anything over 2 would get my interest.
2086  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How to GPU mine on a Xbox One on: January 09, 2014, 07:03:48 AM
My fish mine for me, pretty much the only reason I bought asics was to warm my fish tank. I was using a 400W and a 350W heater in it anyway, so I replaced those for some asics.
that's a great idea.  i remember the guy that used a rig to heat his washroom's underfloor radiant heating, and thought that was genius too.  my plecos need a few gpus!

Back on topic, dont the Xbox and PS4 use an APU rather than a true GPU? So it would be difficult to compare it directly to a 7850 or 7870. I guess we will have to try mining on them and find out. My bet would be mining on the Steam Machine, it actually has a dedicated GPU, an R9 270 iirc.

steam machineS: there are 13 different models @ launch:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/01/07/the-prices-and-specs-of-every-steam-machine-announced-so-far-from-500-to-6000/

I lost all faith in that article at this point:

"You have someone like me, a console gamer, thinking that these rigs are obviously meant for PC players who are familiar with all these brands, care about advanced specs like this, and are used to paying premiums for PCs"

I didn't know there were different models though, mayhaps steam machine rigs are the way to go.

What I think would be doable in the nearish future should the governments start to value Bitcoins, would be to accept Bitcoins for road tolls in a similar fashion as EZPass or maybe being able to fund your EZPass with Bitcoins.

Hmmm, may have just had a good idea for a service...

Is this real life?
look around your house, and you'll start to get pissed off that everything isn't mining for you. welfare Wii.  lazy smartphone.  good for nothing goldfish.

What happens if multiple people pay the money, and both run through what was a red light right into each other?

Is your idea likely to happen, no, but it is an interesting idea.
2090  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: ghash.io is becoming SHOCKINGLY AGGRESSIVE NOW, closing in 45% on: January 09, 2014, 06:19:54 AM
I was thinking of trying Ghash.io because of its merged mining, but after reading this, I'll probably stick to eligus. We are having horrible luck lately though, and BTCGuild is losing the PPLNS race to Ghash.io, so your best option may be to PPS on BTCGuild, and thats with a 7.5% fee...

In the meantime, I'm going to look at the cost of datacenters, maybe having multiple Cex.io's isn't a bad idea
2091  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: How to get blatently inaccurate trust rating removed? on: January 09, 2014, 05:15:51 AM
I'm not too sure you can actually have anyone remove trust that isn't "fair". The mods and theymos should theoretically have the power to remove them, but I highly doubt they would as it goes against the principles of having an unmoderated trust system. There is no point in having a trust system if the trust can be arbitrarily changed or removed as it just breaks the system and is open for abuse. I wish you luck in trying, but don't get your hopes up.

2092  Other / Meta / Re: Crumbs, Hashfast, and ban. on: January 09, 2014, 12:06:57 AM
Crumbs was banned for his "activities" in the Activemining thread. He wasn't alone, although, but I believe he is the only one to get a permanent ban, as he had been temporarily banned before.

Thanks for the answer, and I mean it.
But how come some preventive, positive - although "misprestended" (raw translation from french, not sure it is understandable.... maybe "ill-served"? "hateful"? - action can get you a perm-ban when some dubious alts only get a temp one?
Any way you could reconsider crumbs, please?

Cause if hateful, that was rightful. Wink

It wasn't his preventive, positive posts that got him banned. I watched crumbs very closely, and agree he brought up good points from time to time, but the majority of his posts were incredibly disruptive. While some dubious alts do indeed only get a temp ban, so did Crumbs. This was the second time that he was banned, that I know of anyway, there could have been other bans.

2093  Other / Meta / Re: Crumbs, Hashfast, and ban. on: January 08, 2014, 11:49:28 PM
Crumbs - which I have absolutely no connection to, not even a single PM - have been trolling hashfast threads quite steadily.
Intention was pure, intuition was right on spot, presentation was alternatively hillarious (come on, the ponys!) and very conspirationnist.
But overall, he was right, tried to warn people in his own way.
If he's been banned, I really am sad.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=127503

He might have kept more people away from this scam, would he have not been shut down.
I dislike censorship just a tad less than sammership.

But I hate both.

2094  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] 2011 1 BTC Error Casascius Coin on: January 08, 2014, 10:38:19 PM
Opening the thread back up, as I'm curious to see if the lack of news from Casascius has influenced the market.
I think if you cleaned the coin up and put it on ebay you'd get at least a $700 premium over the face bitcoin value.

Mayhaps, however I'd really rather not clean the coin. It could either increase the value, or decrease it. Most of them have tarnish on them, as no one thought they were going to be super collectable when Casascius first started making them, so a lot of them weren't put in Air Tites like the later coins. The scratch on the back is probably the most damaging to value, however as ones without scratches are going for a 2 BTC + premium, I'd imagine that mine is still pretty valuable.

I can't say I'm really desperate to sell the coin, so if the right offer comes across I'll take it. I think I could just use the Bitcoins in a better way right now, but if it doesn't sell, I might end up holding it for years until its worth some serious coin.

2096  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Casascius coins, unredeemed fully funded on: January 08, 2014, 04:28:36 PM
Yes, but if I take gold or silver to an ordinary person they will see that it has value (federal reserves) and they'd be interested in buying for a good price

If I take this coin to the same people who are not interested in or do not know about bitcoins, the maximum they would pay is a little bit above the value of the bitcoin on the coin itself (manufacture and profit costs for manufacturers (~20$). This is so they can redeem the bitcoins and keep the physical coin understanding that the fact that it is physical means they must pay a LITTLE extra for its making.

Certainly not 2000$.

I've seen a few silver pieces and many many gold pieces sell for far more than a $2000 premium. It has to do with what people are willing to pay for them.
2097  Other / Meta / Re: VIP Member "goat" abusing trust rating system on: January 08, 2014, 07:41:56 AM
You are right that there is no such thing about a perfect trust system. In my opinion, there is only one way to trust a person, and it has to do with self interest. If someone is operating a service, and making 1 Bitcoin per week, you can be fairly certain they can be trusted with 1 Bitcoin, because why would they steal your 1 Bitcoin and lose their guarenteed long term income for a small short gain? I use a more complex version of that system pretty religiously and have never been scammed before. The slightly harder part to take into account, is that you have to factor in others as well. If I give that person 1 Bitcoin, and 49 others do as well, we are no longer trusting them with 1 Bitcoin, they are trusted with 50 Bitcoins, and different trust calculations have to be done.

A completely decentralized system, like OTC has it faults as well. Its susceptible to "fake" trust. I like to use the example of how I got into Bitcoins in the first place. I was 14 or 15 when I got into Bitcoin, and it was damn near impossible to buy them, especially since I had limited payment options besides cash that I had earned doing odd jobs. So what I'd do was go to the local 7-11, buy money paks, and trade them for Bitcoins to this nice chap named Pirateat40 on OTC who had quite a bit of feedback. Because he had this trust from people I had never heard of, I put blind faith into him, and got lucky. I bought a lot of Bitcoins off of him, so I can say that I trust him for X amount, people see that we had done X BTC in trades sucessfully, so might as well trust him with X BTC as well, building what could have been an undeserved and unaccountable trust rating. We all know how that turned out in the long run. What centralizing the trust system does, is adds accountability. If person on Tier 1 trusts person who is now on Tier 2, it is against Person 1's self interest to allow person 2 to represent them if they are not what is desired in a trust sytem.

My suggestion, would be to get rid of trust score in the first place. Rather than a trust system, I think just a strict feedback system would work better. Remove the numbers, so people will be forced to read why someone received feedback and from who. What the default trust system in this case would do, is makes it so scammers can't make 100 accounts, leave themselves tons of feedback, and go off and scam people with their fake trust, but they wouldn't have any added weight.

Please pm me if I can bribe you. Pgp please.

You can send coins the address in my signature. I don't know what a bribe would do for you besides getting me to say "thank you". Maybe I could convince the rest of the staff to take you off the burn list, I MEAN uh...

Seriously though, I have recieved some rather odd offerings before though, never anything scandalous or exciting though. I would have figured people here would have the imagination to come up with some sort of a bribe terms that would be worthwhile. Most of the time people just ask me for alt coin trading advice.

I just normally tell them for free, to mine CommyCoin: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=82726.0
