2121  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Q]What are ASIC miners? on: March 17, 2013, 10:34:15 AM
I heard something like ASIC  miners and people recommend it more

Actually what is that?

As i am new to the mining scene can some1 please explain a little about this so called thing

Application Specific Integrated Circuit.

They're built to do one thing, and they do it fast and well.  It's essentially the Ferrari of the Bitcoin mining industry.

$301 for one and I live in Chicago.  Cash in person.

I actually believe this is a purchase I might regret, so if you want it jump on it.
2123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is Bitcoin safe against a quantum computer? on: March 16, 2013, 12:30:56 AM
Neither is every public private keypair in the world, by your logic. So don't do online banking. Or shop online. Or do credit card transactions.
Bitcoin is not the only thing not safe from the concept.

Why does CIA need to destroy the banking system?

The point is that if Bitcoin's algorithm can be broken then there will be more profitable targets than Bitcoin.

4)  Close down my browser, reconnect to the Internet, and reopen my browser.

Upon reconnecting to the internet, the malware that earlier had been taking a screenshot every quarter second uploads the photo payloads it had been waiting on since it had lost Internet connectivity for a short while.

Doh.
2126  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] First-Day BFL ASIC Preorder #1769 Little-SC on: March 15, 2013, 06:35:16 PM
correct me if im wrong  but im a I thought the little singles weren't announced till later
origonaly it was 4.5 gh/s jalepeno $149  60gh/s single sc  $1299 and the 1500gh/s mini rig sc $29899

or was this day the first day they had the little sc that you ordered ??

I ordered 3 Jalapenos on June 24, 2012.

You are correct that the little singles weren't announced until later.  However, those who had already placed Jalapeno pre-orders were allowed to upgrade their order to the Little-SC.  I had to pay extra for this upgrade, and BFL promised that anyone who upgraded their purchase would retain their original spot in line.

So, to clarify, the order you will receive (and the place in line) is one from the first few hours on the very first day of all BFL ASIC pre-orders.  I believe the first order number was something in the low-mid 1600's, so my order is among the first 150 or so ever placed.  It's also likely that not all of these "orders" were paid for, so my true place in line may be even closer to the beginning.  Regardless, your place in the shipping line should easily be within the top 1% of all BFL orders placed to date.

1. Have these started shipping yet?  The last time I checked BFL still had not given a shipping date (at least nothing more than an optimistic estimate)
2. You are selling the 60gh/s single sc for 125 BTC?
3. From BFL's faq website (see below) it appears that BFL plans on shipping 1/3 to upgrades, 1/3 to new orders, and 1/3 random selection.  So is there still a chance that if BFL ships at the end of march you may not receive the unit?

I only ask because I understand the value of your price, you could optimistically hope to mine 125 BTC in as little as 3-4 months.  So if there was some sort of a guarantee that your preorder was going to be shipped in the first batch, then I would absolutely consider the purchase.  In the event that BFL delays shipping, yet again, or that your preorder was unlucky enough to be neglected in the first batch are you offering any sort of discounted fee?  or is this a take-it-or-leave-it deal?

Quote
Because of the potential for massive disruption that our ASIC units may cause to the mining ecosystem, we are instituting a 1/3 shipping method for our first shipment of products to individuals. So that no single person or handful of people are able to gain a material advantage over any other, we will ship all our available units at the same time to as many customers as we can. This means we will likely delay shipping on our first units until we have accumulated enough stock to satisfy a significant portion of our initial orders. This ensures that as many people as possible who are early adopters are equally and fairly treated when receiving our product. To that end we will be shipping our first orders as such: 1/3 of each product line (Jalapeno, Single SC and Minirig SC) will be shipping to new orders, 1/3 to upgrade orders and the final 1/3 will be shipped to a random selection of orders from the first two categories (both upgrade and new customers) received in the first month of orders (From 23 June 2012 to 22 July 2012).

1.)  BFL has not shipped the products yet, however they have posted pictures of completed chips and boards and they state the chips are working fine.

2.)  I am selling the pre-order for the Little-SC which is 30 gh/s.

3.)  As you can see here, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=89685.0  the first known order number according to this thread is #1656 while my order number is #1769.  Order numbers occurring around July 22 include up to at least order #3758.  This alone places me in the top 5% of orders placed in just the first month of orders.  If BFL plans to ship 1/3 of the units to "new" orders, then I would think my order should easily make the cut (though this is up to BFL, of course).

4.)  This is a take it or leave it deal.  I live in IL, so not only should I be among the first to receive my order due to my low order number, but I should also be among the first to receive the product in transit.  Shipping from Kansas City to IL usually takes a day or two, and if I wanted, I could even pick up the device in person.  However, this is a "take it or leave it deal" because there are simply too many unknown variables that could change between now and a few weeks from now which could alter my sale decision.  I am actually quite reluctant to let my pre-order go considering I've waited so long, and also because I believe that the premium its resale carries will remain high even after 2-3 months of mining with it.
2127  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Creating ultra-safe paper wallet (Did I do this correctly?) on: March 15, 2013, 03:56:39 AM
These are the steps I just took in creating a paper wallet that is intended to be ultra secure in the event that I wish to stash some BTC there for the long-term.

1)  Open www.bitadress.org in my browser.

2)  Disconnect from the Internet entirely by disabling my Internet adapter.

3)  Click "Generate New Address" on the bitaddress.org tab and print my paper wallet.

4)  Close down my browser, reconnect to the Internet, and reopen my browser.

Here's my question:  After the steps I just took, is there any possible way that anyone could have intercepted the address or private key?  Is the paper wallet I just created 100% safe?

2131  Economy / Goods / [WTS] First-Day BFL ASIC Preorder #1769 Little-SC on: March 15, 2013, 01:03:04 AM
Hello,

I would like to sell my pre-order (#1769) for a BFL Little-SC.  This order was placed within ~2 hours of BFL announcing that ASICs were available for pre-order on June 24, 2012.  For serious inquiries, I have screen-cap proof of both the original order for 3 Jalapenos as well as the upgrade to a Little-SC.

Upon receipt of the machine, it will be shipped via overnight express to you the next business day (or Saturday, if possible).

Price:  125 110 BTC shipped.  I will consider all serious offers.

Some feedback:

+1 the joint

Excellent Seller, even took my kooky request to send him my own UPS label via email... Gladly will work with him in the future.

Radeon 5550 Just as described Smiley

+1 The Joint

He trusted me enough as a newbie on these boards to do a very fast transaction with me.  He responded to all emails very quickly, let me know of the progress (on his end) of the transaction, and was very patient with me regarding how these things work.

I would not hesitate to do business with him again.

+1 to "The joint"

Bought a video card from him. He did a great job of shipping the video card out promptly and it works fine.

Thank You

+1 to "the joint" for trading in this thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=35909.0

Very responsive. Kept me constantly updated and was prompt with shipping.

Am now waiting for shipment #2 and will post again when it arrives.

And another +1. Second shipment arrived no problem and he was very communicative during the wait. Not sure if I'd give the postal people a similar rating lol, but "the joint" did a great job Smiley

1+ the joint

bought a few btc worth of gems from him. extremely fast shipping and awesome overall!
2133  Economy / Goods / [WTS] Casascius Series-3, 1 BTC physical coins on: March 14, 2013, 10:22:19 PM

Note:  Coins in picture are series-2

Hello Smiley

I currently have twelve (12) series-3, 1 BTC physical coins for sale.

I am willing to sell these in groups of ones (1), twos (2), or threes (3).

Prices:

Prices on Casascius's official website indicate the price for a single physical BTC coin is 1.5 BTC + shipping.  Compare to the following offer below:

For simple envelope delivery (no tracking):

1 Coin = 1.35 BTC shipped
2 Coins = 1.3 BTC apiece, shipped
3 Coins = 1.25 BTC apiece, shipped

For delivery with tracking:

1 Coin = 1.5 BTC shipped
2 Coins = 2.93 BTC shipped
3 Coins = 4.3 BTC shipped

Rules:
-  Contact me via PM or in this thread and indicate the number of coins desired (1, 2, or 3), your preferred shipping method, and the country of destination.
-  I will confirm your request and reply with a payment address.
-  Payment is required before shipment.  Upon receipt of payment, each shipment will be sent out the next business day unless extraordinary circumstances arise.
-  If you opt for no tracking, you agree that I am in no way liable for the safe delivery of your order.  This means that you also forfeit your right to formally assert any scam accusations against me in the event your shipment is lost or stolen in transit.  I will essentially package these deliveries and tuck them in the mailbox.
-  If you opt for tracking, you agree that I am liable for the safe transfer of your coins to the postal carrier.  I am also liable for providing you with a tracking number ( I retain the right to post this number publicly).  This is the extent of my liability.
-  If you desire insurance, it will cost extra and I will discuss this with you on a case-by-case basis so that we can reach an agreeable shipping price.  The main line of reasoning behind this is that I have not thoroughly researched the cost of insuring these coins overseas.
-  I am not responsible for damaged coins (e.g. peeled/honeycombed holograms, etc.) as this could easily be performed after receipt of the coins.
-  Upon receipt of the coins, please post that you have received them in this thread.

Why should you trust me?

Aside from having conducted dozens of transactions on this forum in which I have been trusted with up-front payment, I am also a contributor for Bitcoin Magazine and a donating member of the Bitcoin 100.  I have vested too much time into this community and cherish my reputation to this point.  I have rep upon request and can post pictures of the physical BTC within a few days if needed (I don't have immediate access to any digital camera).  I'm sure that those who have purchased from me in the past will attest to my fast delivery, consistent and personalized order updates, and rapid communication.

I look forward to doing business with you!  Smiley

2135  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reversed transactions due to fork on: March 12, 2013, 09:39:41 PM
Within seconds, Armory told me it was no longer synced to my Bitcoin client, and within a few minutes after that, Armory crashed.

[quiote]What you are describing is not a "reversed transaction" but simply a transaction that apparently never got broadcast.

Semantics.  Reversed is a good enough word to describe it because the funds appeared to actually leave the wallet as indicated by a decreased balance and a transaction listing on my sending client showing 0 confirmations.  When the client rebooted, that transaction was no longer listed in my client and the "sent" Bitcoins were still there.  Although it apparently was never broadcast to the network, my client initially acted as though it had been broadcast.

Quote
The Bitcoin-Qt/bitcoind client does not send out a spend transaction until it has reached sync.  So it could have been perfectly bad timing where just before when your transaction was communicated to bitcoind (which is what Armory uses underneath I believe), that client discovered a block at a greater height and did not send the transaction.

Now when the client is restarted it does not automatically re-broadcast a transaction.  The bitcoind needs to remain running, sometimes a half hour or (or longer maybe) for any transactions to get re-broadcast.

So, at this point -- make sure you've left everything running for a long enough period to make sure no spend transaction is just waiting to get re-broadcast.

If that doesn't change anything then I'm pretty much out of suggestions.  If the Bitcoin network doesn't know of your transaction (e.g., blockchain.info doesn't have any knowledge of it) and your client isn't re-broadcasting it then either the transaction was invalid and no peers will relay it or it somehow never got saved.

The bitcoind wallet uses BDB so I suppose if that got taken down with a crash and the database wasn't closed that a rollback in the local BDB wallet.dat database could have occurred to the point it was at prior to you sending the payment.

If this is to an address in your own wallet, there's nothing really to worry about if the transaction were somehow later be re-broadcast.  If it was to some other party, one way of ensuring that the lost transaction becomes moot is to spend those coins with a new transaction.  So if your wallet has 1.123456 BTC, send a payment to an address you control with all 1.123456  (less transaction fee) so that even if that missing transaction were somehow to resurface at some later time it would not be a valid transaction (as you've since re-spent those funds).

It seems that "somehow [the transaction] never got saved" appears to be what happened.  I can't think of any reason why no peers would relay it.
2136  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reversed transactions due to fork on: March 12, 2013, 07:52:41 PM
Since it was pointed out that I "clearly [didn't] understand" the forking situation after I made reference to the idea that lots of people might lose money due to reversed transactions, I'd like to know if something similar happened to you yesterday.

I was running my Bitcoin client and Armory together when I learned about the fork.  After I received word of the "all clear," I sent a small test transaction from one wallet to another.  After I sent the funds, my wallet indicated that the funds had left, but I received no confirmation that my other wallet had received the transaction.  Within seconds, Armory told me it was no longer synced to my Bitcoin client, and within a few minutes after that, Armory crashed.

I quit my client and Armory and rebooted both of them and let them both resync.  After the resync, my BTC balance returned to what it was prior to the test transaction as if I had never sent it to begin with.  I checked blockchain, and there was no record of the test transaction despite my client indicating that the transaction had cleared.

So, wtf?  How did this happen?

Sounds like you were on the dead chain still?

I was running Bitcoin 0.8.

It's not just downtime.  It's a clusterfuck due to all transactions that will inevitably be reversed.  I guarantee you a bunch of people lose a lot of money from this.

Fortunately for me, I was able to sell some LTC at .0115 BTC  Cheesy

No transactions are being reversed at all.  Where are you getting this false information from?

He doesn't understand, clearly.

You don't understand what I meant, clearly.  I had to resend a transaction that was reversed post-fork.

I didn't mean a rollback.
2140  Economy / Speculation / Re: calm the fuck down everyone on: March 12, 2013, 02:37:20 AM
I was panicking a few minutes ago but asked around.  The issue will be over in a few hours, and any crash will be momentary.  Only 11 blocks or so were affected and it'll all be over very quickly.  By tomorrow morning, we are back to business as usual.

Maybe we see a temporary dip, but that'll resolve eventually, because this issue is not really a big deal except for now.  We don't see many hard forks and I'm sure the devs will be much more cautious in the future after this has happened.
This. Seriously, I'm just kicking myself for not having any standby cash in MTGOX.

I'm kicking myself for not having funds in BTC-e!

By the way, I see this as a huge, enormous, unbelievably fucking huge deal.  This is completely different from a scam or a hack, this is an "accident" that just froze the whole fucking economy.

To demonstrate why this is a huge fucking deal, consider yourself in two scenarios:

1)  You are a Bitcoin "Big Dog" holding onto >10,000 BTC and you see, "URGENT:  Chain fork" on your client.  When the network reorganizes itself, how do you respond?

2)  You are a wealthy investor and trader.  You've heard about this Bitcoin thing and are amazed at its performance over the past few years, and you've become excited upon hearing that soon, exchanges such as CoinLab will allow you to purchase BTC in very large chunks and store them securely (i.e. safe from hacks/theft, etc.).  But, after hearing about the recent Bitcoin fork, how confident would you be in the safety of your future investment?

Bitcoin will still have far less downtime than fiat banks.

It's not just downtime.  It's a clusterfuck due to all transactions that will inevitably be reversed.  I guarantee you a bunch of people lose a lot of money from this.

Fortunately for me, I was able to sell some LTC at .0115 BTC  Cheesy
