221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Backups people on: July 13, 2011, 01:42:30 AM
I just felt I should post this so others can heed my warning, BACKUP your wallet.dat, frequently.

I just lost over 300$ worth of bitcoins because my computer froze and the wallet.dat is now 90% missing.  My backups wouldnt load either.  I've tried the private key recovery tools and they dont find anything.  Basically just please look after your wallet.dat.

Please, heed the warning, This really screwed me big time, this week my wife lost her job, I was planning to cash these out to pay some bills.

TL;DR; backup your fucking wallet.dat

How can a file be 90% missing?
222  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What percent of Bitcoins are used for unethical things on: July 13, 2011, 01:40:59 AM
99% of Bitcoins are used for trading into dollars and vice versa, back and forth.
223  Other / Off-topic / Re: Namecoin Dying on: July 13, 2011, 01:29:19 AM

I admit I've only used Bitparking but it has been extremely reliable.

Chill dawgs. Namecoiners gotta stick together yo!

I made a thread here: https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=28388.0

"Are you a Namecoiner?"
225  Other / Off-topic / Are you a Namecoiner? on: July 13, 2011, 01:26:22 AM

I am. Namecoins are like Bitcoins if you give them machine guns.
226  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: namecoin usage on: July 13, 2011, 12:43:39 AM
can someone clarify this :

1)
when I "buy" domain and hosting with namecoins, what happens with those namecoins ?
are they lost, destroyed, locked, deleted, stored to be released when domain ownership expires...
who gets them ?

2)
where is the actual hosting taking place ?
on miners discs and through their bandwidth or what ?
I mean, if I want to install poker game on servers, how would that be done?

... yes pls, be first poker site to host using namecoin (possible but still for technically minded, get your IT guy to do it)

There already is a poker site that accepts Namecoin. It's a great site, I played there and it was fun.

http://www.moonco.in/

... heh, i actually meant host using the namecoin DNS s/ware but they will probably accept Namecoin currency also ... pretty amazing that you can do either ... (shakes head)

I wouldn't be surprised if the owner also has a .bit registered to it.
227  Economy / Economics / Re: Namecoin and Bitcoin value are now equal (based on difficulty) on: July 13, 2011, 12:36:33 AM
All discussion as to the usability of namecoin aside, difficulty at parity actually means taking a loss mining namecoin.

Mining in a pool has a pool fee off the top, then there is a fee to transfer the namecoins from the pool to you, then a fee to transfer the namecoins to the exchange, the exchange charges a fee to exchange namecoins to bitcoins, then there is a fee to withdraw the bitcoins. This is all before the regular fees of bitcoin, 5 fees. They may be small individually but as you use it they add up. So if you generate the same number of bitcoin-valued namecoins you are taking a loss over directly generating bitcoins.

Who made that exchange site, adding fees to withdraw, destroyed namecoins trading. Congratulation!

Because taking 0.01 on withdrawing is going to kill all trading!
Yup 0.01 NMC is currently 0.37 cents. So yeah at the current rate if you withdraw your namecoins, you bet your ass they are taking a big chunk of your account!

It's a static fee. Withdrawing 5000 NMC costs 0.01 NMC.

Are you trolling, or just a little... not all there?

Obviously you aren't able to decipher what is sarcasm and what is meant to be real. Once again, your attitude has gotten the best of you. LOL. I'm surprised you are listed as a hero member when you make remarks like the one above and also in the other discussion string.

Oh and one more thing. It's not a static fee because when a .bit domain costs go to 0.01 namecoins you bet your ass the fees will be more like 0.00001 NMC. If it can change it is semi-static/semi-dynamic.

Are you bored, or just a little... just little (in every form)?

I just post too much because I have no life, I don't deserve hero status.

Namecoins will most likely drop in difficulty significantly in ~1 week. (http://dot-bit.org/tools/nextDifficulty.php)

Might it be useful to buy namecoins right now and speculate on a second NMC bubble or not?

/discuss

They are at a very low price right now considering the history. I would advise it.

This law is to protect children under 13, I believe.

Well she's clearly 8 or 9 in the pic, can't you tell?
233  Other / Meta / Re: Forum Violating the U.S. Law on: July 12, 2011, 09:33:17 PM
The forum post: Worlds First Bitcoin Tattoo, is in violation of the law. I have reported at least one image to the admins with no action taken. Apparently your not allowed to cuss on this forum but you can show naked bodies or body parts. Its a strange form of ethics. If you like porn good for you. But keep it off this forum. Porn is a major vector for viruses.

Take action to corrects this problem by requiring people to verifiy their age or remove the offending images or I will be forced to report this site for violations of the law. You have 72 hours to take action. If you want to expose yourself to $50,000 fine and/or 6 months in jail its your choice. It should be noted that the posters might be just as liable as the forum operators.

I see you're fishing to get banned...
Banned or not, they're completely right about US law and COPPA.

Not really. There is no "lascivious display of genitalia", as is in the law, so it doesn't matter anyways.

235  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Increasing difficulty - Bitcoin or Namecoin mining on: July 12, 2011, 09:27:26 PM
Bitcoins and Namecoins can be used as currency in exactly the same way. They both share mostly the same source code, for Christ's sake. There's a lot of misinformation out there.
236  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [Scam Alert] Global Standard Bank - the first Bitcoin bank? on: July 12, 2011, 12:59:32 PM
The owner made a statement.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Global_Standard_Bank

Quote
Lets be fair

We admire the passion shared within the Bitcoin community both on Wikipedia and on the Bitcoin Forum. However, it is unfair and premature to start calling Global Standard Bank a scam or fraud, when we just started (last Week) and there has not been any negative experiences reported among our customers. We are very sorry that some of you do not like our website or the program used to build the site, but we are not web designers, we are a small group of professionals with varied backgrounds from banking and sales to law and administration. That being said, we appreciate your comments and where possible we will use your input to improve our site. Again, as we are brand new, there will no doubt be growing pains in our company and with our site.
Many of the photos on our site are stock images, which we will be slowly replacing as we develop our business. Pictures that may have offended users, or found to be misleading have been removed, and are only a projection of where we plan to take our company. At no point did we ever state that they were pictures of our offices, but given the possible conclusion that they are anything more that marketing material - they have been removed as well.
Our Montreal office is located as described on our website, which we share with several other notable companies and national brands. You are each welcome to visit us at our offices at anytime during business hours, but due to the high security nature of our business, we accept visitors by appointment only. Please call our office, and we will be pleased to meet with you.
We are a dually registered Canadian Federal Corporation, which until our launch, we operated as a numbered company to maintain the secrecy of our project until ready for public disclosure. You are welcome to visit the Industry Canada and Quebec websites to verify this but, if you have lived in Canada or especially Quebec, you will know that such postings do not appear immediately - sometimes a week or two. If you don't see our listing, please check back again.
We meant no disrespect to members of the Bitcoin Forum, for not posting or replying to posts regarding Global Standard Bank. We are not members of the forum, which means that we cannot post, except in the newbie section which is of little help today when all the posts were made about us. Also, members of the Bitcoin Forum are by large not our market. Our goal is to bring Bitcoin to a larger audience, out of the forums and bring it into everyday life as a common currency. Most users within the forums use exchanges like Mt. Gox or Tradehill, and would never use our type services which are geared towards retail customers; and they have significant technical savvy to properly secure their Bitcoins against hackers. Just as some investors with technical knowledge of the Forex market, buy and sell currencies directly from brokerages and others with average knowledge or less, deal with their local bank for conversion. We are not in competition with any of the exchanges, we are in, or developing a retail market for Bitcoin.
Social networking sites are an important component to our online marketing, and we would never "unfriend" anyone without cause, and if this did happen, it was either by mistake or due to a technical problem, and we are sorry if we offended anyone in this regard.
So, in the sprit of fair play, why don't you see what happens with Global Standard over the next few months and years before starting to give us serious names like Fraud or Scam. We accept the challenge to run our business in a manner that brings credit to Bitcoin and the community as a whole. Once again, thank you for your input and critical eye which has only caused us to improve our website and business. Should you have any questions or concerns please give us a call or email me directly.
Highest regards,
James Moore Global Standard Bank jim@globalstandardbank.com
p.s. The user bitcoineer is unknown to us, and is not connected with Global Standard Bank. We thank you for the thought of including us into Wikipedia, even if it is a little early to be here. jm — Preceding unsigned comment added by Global Standard (talk • contribs) 07:47, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Google "Poisson distribution". Get educated.
238  Other / Off-topic / Re: Namecoin Dying on: July 12, 2011, 05:51:22 AM
Namecoin is certainly not 'dying'. In fact the development team has been very active, and activity has been picking up on the exchange. It seems to me that some people are getting nervous that all their money is in Bitcoins.

If you left all your money in Bitcoins, and walked away from a year and came back, there's a chance it could be worth 0. Not because governments made it illegal, or because more people were goxed... but because Namecoin has more features and simply made it obsolete in comparison, so it fell into disuse.

Namecoin can do everything that Bitcoin can do, and also the DNS stuff.
239  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [Scam Alert] Global Standard Bank - the first Bitcoin bank? on: July 12, 2011, 05:47:03 AM
I think they gave up on the Wikipedia front. It could be disastrous if one of the major Bitcoin portals links to them... boy that would generate some negative publicity.

People like them are messing up the image of Bitcoin, and possibly scamming people. It makes me kind of upset actually.
240  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Active Bitcoin nodes per day since December - cool charts on: July 12, 2011, 05:20:13 AM
what exactly is a node.  Is me running a client a node? Is my miner a node? not sure what a node is.

I think it is clients only, but could be wrong. It's probably the Bitcoin process running on your computer (bitcoind or bitcoin.exe).
