Another story that really damages crypto's reputation:

http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/5/7496825/someone-stole-5-million-from-a-major-bitcoin-exchange

There really needs to be a solution to these exchanges. These thefts do no favors to the public image of crypto.
222  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption extended[Updates&Discussion] on: January 05, 2015, 12:46:22 PM

They have their agenda...these "projects" are all bullshit, they even admit they have doubts about half of them. They must be bitcoiners, make noobs burn on 2.0 platform.

coindesk.com could be called bitcoindesk.com. 99% of the crypto media are invested in bitcoin which makes them biased which makes them worthless as general crypto media.
cryptocoinsnews seems to be similar.

I think one of the best articles i saw on NEM was from Motherboard:

http://motherboard.vice.com/read/this-cryptocurrency-doesnt-want-to-beat-bitcoin-it-wants-to-beat-the-economy

It was nice to see Motherboard write up this article as (imo) they've got a large profile/presence online. I'm a fan of their youtube channel as well which does have quite alot of appeal. I've been a subscriber of theirs for a few years.
223  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption extended[Updates&Discussion] on: January 04, 2015, 07:16:58 PM
This is an interesting bit of calculation I saw on reddit, and something that NEM unfortunately will never have to worry about because of PoI and no wasteful mining requirements:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2rajx5/a_minimum_of_1470_bitcoins_has_to_be_dumped_on/

Just yet another advantage we will have over the vast majority of cryptocurrencies out there as time goes on.

I had a very long debate with somebody at the conference about this.  I explained that it takes 1 million USD a day to support mining.  I had long ago figured out the numbers in the article, though mine were just rough guesstimates working backwards instead of forwards (same conclusion though).

In the long run, Bitcoin has a huge problem. The miners are being subsidized $1,000,000 a day from us, but they actually are only paid $4000 a day in transaction fees by people sending Bitcoins.  That means that $1,000,000 worth of new money must come into the system everyday, and the price just stays the same.

But for us, if $1,000,000 comes in, then it is reflected proportionately in the price of NEM and the marketcap goes up $1,000,000.

This was a conclusion i reached many years ago back in 2009. I dabbled with mining but considered it a waste of time as i figured if it took off, we'd soon see dedicated hardware which would outperform that of what we see in desktops today (aka, ASICs)

Plus there's no doubt in my mind that what we consider cutting edge asics (with the pricetag to boot) is merely scraps fed to the competing masses that manufacturers hand us. Ultimately the real winners are asic manufacturer's, who will have a monopoly not just over the mining hardware itself, but over Bitcoin too and the mining process. (No doubt they'll use any experimental tech to mine for themselves, turning over a profit giving them an advantage; when this ceases to be, they sell it to the masses at a premium. Rinse and repeat.)

I personally would like to know how this is any different from centralized/privatized banks who conduct fraudulent business with FIAT.

With this in mind, within a few days i didn't go near crypto again for many years - only coming back here after hearing about NXT and NEM. In retrospect my foresight actually cost me alot of money - if i had carried on with mining, i'd have been better off today. But the way i see it is this is a short term profit that has no long term sustainability. It won't last. In fact, i'd argue the only thing keeping Bitcoin afloat is miners who manipulate the market and, most certainly, black market trade of said currency (Which is an inevitable outcome as governments and banks will deem crypto's a threat - there's a reason "anonymous" coins have such high appeal. This is a fact.)

PoW needs a successor if Crypto is to be taken seriously, then all is left is to deal with any threats from banks or governments who will likely regulate it to destruction.

Found this article:

No NEM listed on it though. Not even NXT which was rather surprising.
225  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption extended[Updates&Discussion] on: January 03, 2015, 09:50:31 PM
Gotta bare in mind Nemstake is seeing less volume simply because there's less Nemstake available. Most buyers have bought, redeemed, and await release.

Seems a tad unreliable to peg NEM's future prospects onto an asset which is slowly dwindling in quantity.
226  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption extended[Updates&Discussion] on: December 28, 2014, 04:00:36 PM
One NEM stake cost about $15 (or even free for the very first people) about a year ago and is now worth over $600.

That is a gain of over 4000%

And people are complaining.. Crypto makes me laugh sometimes.

NEM is a solid project. The original codebase, momentum from the developers and the community alone is going to make this one of the standout cryptos of 2015. It's one to hold long term and keep an eye on.

Yup. NEM has seen huge growth from what was essentially nothing. It's clear to see that there's a number of people here who have intents to sell almost straight away - now of course i don't hold them against that, but i do believe they just see quick profit in their eyes and this is most certainly going to be their undoing - this is the biggest problem crypto's have in the altcoin space, and is precisely why we see so many scams, pumps and dumps, fudsters and other chaos. They're in it for the FIAT.

I'm certain that the less vocal among us who regularly spectate these discussions are likely in this for a much longer haul, and I like to think of myself the same.

While I agree, the problem is is someone makes this point in every thread about every coin.

I am hoping for once this one is different.

Yeah, so far though this project has proven it is different; an active asset that has seen plenty of activity - first of it's kind - and a functional, beta client to play with. Nevermind seeing a fairer distribution coupled with taint analysis...

Although what i've said is cliched, this coin is different.

NEM fall down in weekly volume, still more and more down
nobody trading NEM

I can't imagine there are many nemstakes left to trade - hence the smaller volume. Most people would've redeemed their assets and have a place on the stakeholder list.

Ok, OP / first post says NEM distribution estimated in beginning of December. I realize that's a rough estimate, but has there been any updated expectations on when distribution will actually happen? I can't keep up with this thread and don't know where to go for information.

We're not giving out ETAs anymore since it did more harm than good.
I wouldn't stay away for longer then a few weeks though Wink

Release in a few weeks - Confirmed !!!! Smiley

Half-Life 3 confirmed Wink
Stalker 2 confirmed Wink
Oh man, the Stalker games were awesome. Loved their atmosphere.

Said it before, i'll say it again;

I'm only interested in a solid platform. I don't want another bitcoin where there's so many patches and holes it makes people wary of investment. This is not what NEM needs.
230  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption extended[Updates&Discussion] on: December 14, 2014, 03:18:18 PM
I went to the Bitcoin conference in Seoul to represent NEM.  There were a lot of good people there that I was able to talk to.  Some are operating exchanges, some are organizing events, and some are developers.  It felt good to get out there and help spread the word of NEM.  I'll look forward to doing it again next time!

My personal highlight was sitting down at lunch with VItalik and talking to him.  He is very smart indeed.

I think the most important thing I did for NEM was help keep us on the radar and plant the seed to let people know we are coming.

After we launch, and we go to another conference we should get our own little booth and try to get up and the guest panels to speak.

Lets make this happen!

Your efforts are very much appreciated. It's nice to see NEM get some representation.

Apparently we are already part of the above "coalition"?

http://blog.gryfencryp.to/2014/07/21/nemcoin/#sthash.ULQyN5ed.YLN66tbG.dpbs

Who ever wrote that really doesn't like nem

This is expected. There will be more like this which are sneakily funded by rivals.

Clearly not a reputable site either considering the eyesore it is, nevermind how the writer can't even paragraph. FUD in a nutshell.
232  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption extended[Updates&Discussion] on: December 09, 2014, 03:34:37 PM
I just ask the question, because i would love to see a deadline and all the buzzling just before the xmas. Would you agree with me, that the launch at 24.12.2014 could be a huge marketing stunt? "This xmas santa will bring a huge gift for everyone, NEM will come into existence"
I dont want to see a deadline. As long as it is not possible to know when the code is ready for launch, a deadline is not only senseless, it is even counterproductive, because it creates negative pressure on the devs and leads in either early, buggy launch or delayed launch which is annoying for you all.

NEM is no pump & dump coin for speculators making quick money. It is a long-term movement.

This is a topic gone over a million times, and common sense pretty much says this - those who pressure for a release are likely people looking for quick fiat anyway, and won't contribute to the nem ecosystem.

I want NEM to be solid, without it things will crash pretty quickly.
233  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption ends on 29 November[Updates&Discussion] on: December 04, 2014, 02:19:23 PM
NEM is the new EXOCOIN.

I believe the team here have run out of reasons to delay the launch instead of being honest and saying their product doesn't work. No more votes, no more blaming users for not testing the beta, no more drawn out registering processes, no more setting dates and changing them and then saying we never set any dates, no more bullshit.

Launch or be the new Exocoin who also couldn't get its tech right. 2 years to produce nothing, wah wah.
FK off, and get out ,FUD.
NEM is much better and hotter than exo.

Being a direct investor in EXO and watching it closely myself, i have to say there is no similarities with EXO and NEM in terms of development, devs or how it's being handled.

EXO was once perhaps a real vision and project but it has now descended into a cut and run. Considering the developer never made much efforts to communicate with the community, it was bound to end up in this scenario sooner or later - a complete stark contrast to what NEM has been.
234  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption ends on 29 November[Updates&Discussion] on: December 03, 2014, 11:06:45 PM
or, use:

http://preev.com/

Work out price of NEM (per NEM coin) in fiat, then enter it into the above site. Benefit of this method is the site is regularly updated with the fluctuating price of BTC.

Not sure why you'd be interested in it's FIAT value though - selling will be the furthest thing from my mind as i know in the many months after release, NEM's true value won't be realized.
235  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption ends on 29 November[Updates&Discussion] on: November 30, 2014, 08:53:45 PM
I agree. I'm a supporter from the beginning (and still support), but please release the coin then work on adding more features.

I'll be as clear as possible on this

We WON'T release NEM without multisig support. Period.

Good to hear.

I see the trolls and fudsters are back again. Obviously wanting a quick release so they can dump (Likely individuals who "Redeemed" their stakes so therefore can't dump on AE) - i expected nothing less from BTT. The real discussions happen over at Nemforum.

There never was or has been a deadline in my mind. The last thing i want is a project that ultimately winds up just like what Bitcoin is.
236  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption ends on 29 November[Updates&Discussion] on: November 26, 2014, 10:43:44 PM
Maybe there should be a paragraph on the website explaining what NEM actually is? Preferably in layman's terms so non-tech savvy people will know what it is.

E.g. "NEM is a cryptographic, decentralised payment system and economic ecosystem. Blah  blah no central bank blah blah rewarding users with transaction fees blah blah."

Also might be wise to mention the client is free? Just buzz words

I agree with you Clam. Bringing things down to layman will be key to NEMs continued succes.

Speaking of which, I recall there being talk of having our client compatible with feature phones/non-smart phones - so that our features can reach the masses. Anything new on this?

Yup. It's very easy to fall for the same traps as others - by assuming people understand even basics that everyone else (like us) considers common knowledge.

You get this in any field regardless of specialty - and you get "specialists" who frequently assume people understand even basics the majority are unaware of.

Clear, step-by step guides are an absolute must, not just in the wallet setup, but also on higher levels such as running nodes on various OS's.
237  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [PoS+PoW] eXocoin [EXO]-gen 2.0- dev. from scratch! Give-Away | Open Beta on: November 26, 2014, 10:39:44 PM
Im a direct investor you dont have to feel sorry for me. Of this eventually launches ill have a massive stack of exo that everyone abandoned.
All or nothing for me.

As a direct investor myself, i approached it prudently and only invested what i could afford to lose.

As others have stated, i think this was a project with good intentions but i think the devs bitten off more he can chew, thus it might just turn into a money grab/scam.

I've not followed much of EXO, seeing as the developer hasn't made much an effort to communicate with his investors.

what can u do??  Take your head out off bush! Stand up and shout if youre man!

Read news     http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-echochambers-27074746
US is an oligarchy, not a democracy

Do u understand that.?
Raed first, write then.

Shocking, absolutly shocking!
My last post is moderated away! Why!
Was it the Truth in my post?  Must have been. Truth hurts.
Idont know. I must guess.

I must change my words too. Because I want to write, tell THE TRUTH.

The spirit of NEM community is not so great anymore. There is good reason.

In NEM has been formed some small group. There the most active people and core team members use power. First they discuss and plan. Only they. The plan may be good, it looks good and it is shoveled to throats of the rest community.  [

b]Regrettably the rest community means only 50 people[/b] because many trust to teams and are very passive; if they read about some election , they may ignore it because they trust Nem will get it well.

To shovel plan to 50 throats is not difficult. In truth they need to win only 15 people. The Gruppe has 20 members and gets those 15 more, it is enoug for win TheElection easily. This means that small group can control NEM.
They show up very joyful messages: great!    nice !  good work!   wonderful progress!  let's make world NEM!

At the backstage they  plann how using communitys money they have  total access and power.

Very regretable. Rockethead is using very bad language and outright threats and intimidations to take honest community members silent, making them leave NEM community. Why he is not modderated???
This is the spirit of Nem. Threats, manipulation, flawed elections. What else?,,,,,

Everything you've said thus far the reality has proven otherwise. It's staggering what utter nonesense this is, even despite the obvious language barrier. There's been no other community that has had the ears of the devs as much as NEM has. Repeated votes and even changes to otherwise big rules have all been considered and done so if necessary. I've also no idea where you're pulling this centralized malarky from either - if you want to make accusations like that which stick, take your pick of any other thread on BTT - plenty of other coins have a far worse reputation and distribution method, especiall PoW.

quality of trolling is dismal..  Undecided i expected some creativeness.. but no.. fighting fud should be fun and some what challenging but fighting the fud in this thread is like eating the color grey.. not even worth the effort Undecided

It's so bad it's funny.

Maybe he's also a PhD?

Public Highschool Diploma PhD (that joke was made up by Robert Kiyosaki).

hahaha.

The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?"

The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"

The graduate with a management degree asks, "How much will it cost?"

The graduate with an arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"

Knowledge is not synonymous with wisdom -- people often forget that.

(This isn't a personal dig at anyone, just my observations/life experience)

A individual with wisdom asks "Is what I'm learning true or false?"
