221  Other / Meta / Re: Is there any section of the forum visible only to selected members like VIP? on: April 06, 2021, 11:04:27 PM
The information in the stats page doesn’t get “tracked”. Any time someone visits a stats page, the stats need to be calculated, and the calculations are very resource intensive. I don’t believe the cost of allowing people to visit the stats page a single time increases as the number of users increases, but rather that the cost is simply high and Theymos was probably trying to reduce server costs when he turned off access to the stats page.

To be honest I don't know how it works in detail, but if it's resource intensive it really wouldn't make sense to have the forum's stats functions to run the same queries every time any user visits the stats page instead of once in a while and otherwise showing cached info.

222  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Words of caution about buying miners on Ebay on: April 05, 2021, 03:23:28 PM
Evidently whatever money you brought them over the 20 years wasn't high enough compared to what they reimbursed you with. If I were you I'd be happy the losses amounted to a suspended eBay account.

I doubt it, unless the customer or the company (such as eBay and amazon) willing to sue those frauds which costs lots of money and time.

Fraud is a crime so police report is all that should suffice if the fraudster hasn't done enough to cover their tracks.
223  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk forum holding 125 BTC on: April 05, 2021, 02:23:28 PM
This is one of the problems with the transparent blockchain:  Anybody in the world can peek at your finances, then offer you unsolicited advice about how to run your business.  (Or worse.)

Transparency is for fools...

...so, why have those coins not been run through JoinMarket or something similar?

The forum never was nor aimed to be a traditional business in the first place, and for the first couple years transparency wasn't a bad thing when the funds raised from selling Donator, VIP titles and donations were being used to pay for the development of the new forum. Forum mods themselves are always free to mix their coins as they please.
224  Other / Meta / Re: Is there any section of the forum visible only to selected members like VIP? on: April 05, 2021, 04:33:33 AM
The admins can view the stats page, or they can at least do a DB query to get the information that is on the stats page.

Of course, but that's irrelevant to everyone else. I doubt if even Cyrus can see it, it's the accurate tracking part that is resource intensive and clearly didn't scale with forum growth, not page requests. If it did not get fixed to this day I imagine the effort to make it work must be disproportionate to perceived utility (and a lot things get tracked by other users anyway).
225  Other / Meta / Re: Is there any section of the forum visible only to selected members like VIP? on: April 05, 2021, 02:01:36 AM
There are sections visible only to Staff members, and one made for Donators/VIP.

The personal stats page (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1161447;sa=statPanel ) is disabled for all the users.
Perhaps that part of the forum is visible only to admin or selected VIP Staff members  Huh

No, it was disabled for performance reasons, similarly to the global forum stats page.

but I am not sure whether the mods or staff have any idea who theymos is) but knowing satoshi? I doubt it.

At least as far as his name goes, theymos has publicly disclosed it himself a very long time ago.
226  Other / Meta / Re: Is there a way to scroll a signature area? on: April 05, 2021, 01:52:49 AM
For years now, most signatures look terrible on my desktop browser. Switching browsers can make a large difference

And the 'same' browser can display BB code signatures significantly differently between different operating systems, even if the fonts used by the browser are supposed to be the same. The Chipmixer signatures look nicer to me on Windows than on Linux.
227  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk forum holding 125 BTC on: April 04, 2021, 07:49:55 PM
Do you really think so? From what I can recall mods get paid around 1000-2000$ a month on a normal basis if they handle a certain portion of reports. I am not sure if this is still the case though. Mods get paid in terms of how many reports they relatively handle. Ref: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5294865.msg55717644#msg55717644

OTOH, I came across this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=234009.msg2480445#msg2480445 which basically proves the forum had more than 6000 BTC in funds.

More links regards to mod payments: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5265166.msg54889130#msg54889130

The vast majority get paid less than that, depends on their activity and whether they're Global mods or not (the latter are paid more per action, IIRC). Current forum funds also amount to >1250 BTC: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155000.0 (I'm writing this number here in case someone still failed to follow the link.)

Which means the forum will never have any problems to self-sustain financially.

229  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Which wallets offer the lowest transaction fees to send BTC ? on: April 02, 2021, 10:59:47 PM
4.5 sat/vB right now. Sure, gotta look at mempool traffic first, just threw it to give an idea how cheap transactions get to be when traffic is smaller. I bet even at 10 sat/vB whatever his transaction was the final fee would have been a hell of a lot more palatable.
230  Local / Polski / Re: [Konkurs] Wytypuj cenę BTC <EDYCJA III> na koniec I kwartału 2021 ! on: April 02, 2021, 07:42:34 PM

edit: otrzymane, thx.
231  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Data I'm exposing when using other server on Electrum on: April 01, 2021, 10:26:36 PM
I had a look at HodlHodl and bisq. While they're great in theory, in practice the costs of BTC on offer are around 4% more than centralized exchange prices. Quantities on offer are low, 0.1 BTC or less.

You can create your own offers and wait for others to buy into them getting better rates than at an exchange but it's definitely for patient people.
232  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Which wallets offer the lowest transaction fees to send BTC ? on: April 01, 2021, 10:21:10 PM
Or forget the whatever the suggestions they offer and set the fees yourself, as low as 1 sat/vB if you're spending many UTXOs (or otherwise trying to send a heavy transaction) and aren't in a hurry.

Dzięki za kolejną edycję konkursu, PW poszły.

234  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-03-15] [Reuters] India to propose cryptocurrency ban, penalising miners on: April 01, 2021, 03:24:49 PM
Here is the original thread in Bitcointalk that deals with his arrest:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1359865.0

And here is a news article which deals with the same topic:
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/Card-frauds-used-bitcoins-to-trade-money/articleshow/50922983.cms

I know all about that, he was also very active here on bitcointalk, but with the updates and when he came back it didn't sound like his guilt was certain. Could have been the wrong person at the wrong time.
235  Local / Polski / Re: Lightning Network - ogólna dyskusja on: April 01, 2021, 08:39:13 AM

236  Local / Polski / Re: Bitmarket zamknięty bez ostrzeżenia. on: April 01, 2021, 05:59:16 AM
237  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2021-03-26 Yahoo! - Chainalysis Raises $100M, Demand for Blockchain Surveillance on: March 31, 2021, 02:57:56 AM
Blockchain analysis right now is something more focused by government entities rather than private companies.

You're wrong. Almost from the start custodian businesses (e.g. exchanges) were one of the major buyers of these services. Chainalysis gets talked about a lot because that's part of their marketing strategy and they were one of the first to market (not sure if they were the first or not).
238  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-03-15] [Reuters] India to propose cryptocurrency ban, penalising miners on: March 31, 2021, 02:53:31 AM

Has he actually been convicted and was he actually guilty? When the story first broke of his arrest it seemed he may have been a scammer but there was no certainty about it.
239  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk forum holding 125 BTC on: March 30, 2021, 03:47:36 PM
@Pharmacist

It's actually >10x as much.
Is this the answer to the question of Pharmacist regarding how much would it take to develop a new forum?

Are you serious? No, I was correcting his and the OP's faulty estimation of the amount of forum funds which are over 10x higher.

240  Economy / Gambling / Re: bustabit – The original crash game on: March 29, 2021, 08:18:50 PM
People don't appear to be divesting from the bankroll.  Shocked

The lack of divestments could also be because we're not at a profit all time high, and commission isn't charged until then. Current investor profit is 6150BTC and ATH is 6167.8BTC, so there won't be any commission charged until players lose another 18BTC. Would be an additional 0.5% profit based off of current bankroll size.

I have noticed that both number have increased since your post and no one seems to have started divesting yet. Do you remember what the numbers were at the beginning of March? (latest change to commissions?)
